MOTHER’S DAY
I cannot remember my mother
By
Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore
I cannot remember my mother
only sometimes in the midst of my play
a tune seems to hover over my playthings
the tune of some song that she used to
hum while rocking my cradle.
I cannot remember my mother
but when in the early autumn mornings
the smell of shiuli flowers floats in the air
the scent of the morning service in the temple
comes to me as the scent of my mother.
I cannot remember my mother
only when from my bedroom window I send
my eyes into the blue of the distant sky
I feel the stillness of my mother’s gaze on my face
has spread all over the sky.

Records show that Julia Howe in 1872 is
the first name associated with Mother’s
day; however Ana Jarvis of Philadelphia
in 1907 aggressively canvassed that a
day be set aside for honoring all mothers. Ana’s mother’s death anniversary fell
on the 2nd Sunday of May which seemed
the best day of choice for her and her
followers to pursue as Mother’s day. The
official seal came in 1914 when President
Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this day as
a national holiday.
Mother’s day is observed all around the
year in several countries interestingly
though; Belgium, Demark, Finland, Italy,
Turkey and Australia also celebrate it on
the 2nd Sunday of May. Warm, bright and
nurturing seems like a logical parallel (is
it still sunny down under?)
So ladies remember this is your day!
Hold on to your comforters! Resist the
urge to jump into a day of chores, let
someone else bring you the coffee / tea.
God forbid you lift a finger to do anything but pretty yourself! 24 hours is a
very short time, sit back and relax, come
to Kiwani’s Park and bond with other
great mothers like yourself.
See you all there
