Hyatt Carla Rae J. Jackson Edward I. Levicoff Andrew J. Lucci (Andy) Holly N. McIntosh What if every child was set on the right path? What if every child stayed in school? What if every child reached their potential? What would it start? It would be the start of something BIG! At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, we help ordinary people make a big impact in the lives of children everyday. This is why our new branding campaign — Start Something™ — is so appropriate. It’s more than just a catchy marketing slogan. It reflects the heart of our mission. The message appeals to recent college graduates or empty-nesters seeking flexible, meaningful volunteer opportunities. It speaks to a group of friends who want to throw a party and donate the proceeds to a worthy cause. It urges successful businesses to reinvest talent and treasure in their community. It even reminds those without money or time to give that they, too, can Start Something™ by becoming an advocate for youth mentoring. This is what makes our organization so unique. We bring people together from all walks of life who share a vision to provide children facing adversity with professionally supported, one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better in enduring ways. During our Volunteer Recognition Dinner, 18 year-old Little Brother Montel said: “I never had positive male influences in my life – my brother roamed the streets and I didn’t have a father. My Big Brother Ed has been there for me over the last six years.” Because Ed chose to Start Something™, Montel graduated from high school and plans to attend college with a Pittsburgh Promise scholarship. In this Annual Report, you will find the names of thousands of individuals, organizations, businesses, and foundations that made it possible for us to help nearly 1,200 local children most in need. We’ve also shared some of the highlights of the year with you in the pages that follow. We hope they will inspire you to Start Something™ for a child in our community. Volunteer to mentor a child who needs a positive adult influence to guide them through the hardship they face. Donate money to help fund our mentoring relationships, give event tickets to provide free opportunities for mentors and mentees to spend time together, or contribute other resources required to sustain our operations. Or Advocate on our behalf to others who might be able to Start Something™ in their own way. On behalf of the children we serve, thank you for your generous contributions. Jan S. Glick CEO James L. Match Activity Highlights The majority of Bigs and Littles spend time on their own playing ball in the park, going to the movies, baking cookies or simply sharing a meal together. It is from these simple shared experiences that relationships grow, helping children to gain greater confidence, develop a sense of caring for others and acquire other intangibles required to achieve success. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh facilitates the relationship-development process by providing unique opportunities for each match to learn, share, and interact together. Throughout the year, the agency on its own – and in partnership with community partners – offers a wide range of experiences and opportunities to mentoring matches. Below are some highlights from the community-based program over the past year: Big/Little Parties – The summer and winter parties are seasonal traditions that Bigs, Littles and staff always enjoy. Whether a day of summer fun at Camp Guyasuta or an afternoon of ice skating at Schenley Park, these annual events draw hundreds of Bigs and Littles from across the service area. Each event is an opportunity for mentoring matches to have fun and know that they are part of something larger than themselves. The agency continued its ongoing partnership with Venture Outdoors, offering matches unique opportunities to get outside and experience the world around them. Bigs and Littles went kayaking and biking along the Allegheny River, participated in a fishing derby and geocached in Allegheny Cemetery. Seven of the ten graduating Littles joined their Bigs at the Annual Volunteer Recognition dinner in April 2011. These long-term matches shared the enormous impacts of their time together, inspiring the other 100 Bigs in attendance. This event was a vivid reminder of the positive outcomes that can be achieved through one-to-one mentoring. Tickets for Kids Foundation – along with many generous individual donors – enabled hundreds of Bigs and Littles to experience theatrical productions, attend local college and professional sporting events and enjoy many other local events throughout the year. These opportunities promote positive interactions, helping to build strong, healthy matches. In June 2011, the “100 Robots for 100 Kids” project gave its 100th robot to a match. In Winter 2006, Mark Palatucci was working on his Ph.D. in robotics at Carnegie Mellon University when several of his colleagues devised the idea to give 100 at-risk children a robot kit – Lego Mindstorm NXT – to fuel their passions for robotics and technology. Over a span of four years and six months, Mark and a group of volunteers from Carnegie Mellon, Google, and Intel Pittsburgh gathered many times with small groups of matches to help them build basic robots. As matches worked with these volunteers, they learned how to program the robots on their own, enabling them to create their own innovations. In January 2011, the agency arranged for several Bigs, Littles, and staff members to board a bus bound for Harrisburg, PA to participate in festivities precipitating the inauguration of Governor Tom Corbett. Governor Corbett invited representatives from all 26 Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies statewide to join him and his family for a “Showcase of Pennsylvania Performing Arts” – a spectacular presentation of local talent. In addition to this event, the agency planned tours of a local television station and the State Capital complex. The Big Brothers Big Sisters State Association of Pennsylvania was selected to receive proceeds from inauguration ticket sales. Several Pittsburgh athletic organizations provided Bigs and Littles unique experiences at sporting events. Sidney Crosby again accommodated matches in his luxury suite at CONSOL Energy Center for several Pittsburgh Penguins games. The Pittsburgh Power invited matches to participate in pregame, on-field festivities, then provided them with front-row seats in the end zone for their final regular season arena football game at CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh Pirates joined with the UMPS Care organization to enable several matches to participate in a pregame meet ‘n greet with umpires prior to several baseball games. In Fall 2010, the agency was approved for a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime & Delinquency (PCCD) to expand the communitybased mentoring program. The focus of this grant was to strengthen supportive services to matches serving Littles ages 12-18 in order to meet their evolving needs and interests. Drawing on feedback from these matches, the agency designed a curriculum of structured activities – or “Big Alternatives” – to address the areas of education, recreation, vocation and culture. To date, matches have been offered opportunities to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Global Links and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. In addition, older Littles and their Bigs have toured the Manchester Craftsman’s Guild where they learned how to make ceramic pottery, toured the August Wilson Center where they participated in a traditional African drum circle and visited the offices of Microsoft Pittsburgh where they learned how to design their own video games.
