THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday,
the Fifth in Ordinary Time, the Scriptural readings begin with
a passage from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah where the
prophet shares part of his vocation story. In the second
reading, from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians,
where we hear of the core message of the Gospel. In the
Gospel, we see the disciples of Jesus leave everything to
follow Him.
INFORMATION ON LENT, HOLY WEEK AND EASTER: A
schedule providing information on the many opportunities to
observe Lent was recently mailed to every household in the
parish. Please read the material carefully and choose what
will help you deepen your spiritual life this Lent.
LENTEN REGULATIONS: Lent begins on Wednesday,
February 10th (Ash Wednesday). Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of
Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the
age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal
and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59.
All should consider this obligation seriously.
SYMPATHY: The sympathy of the parish is extended to
parishioners Frances Weber Weaver at the death of her
grandson, Daniel Weaver and Joseph Stahovic at the death
of his wife and parishioner, Gina Stahovic. May their souls
and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of
God rest in peace.

COMMUNION HOSTS AND ALLERGIES: Our hosts
for communion are baked by the
Cavanagh Company who uses only
whole wheat flour and water to produce
altar bread. The facility does not bake or
package any other product so there is no chance of
cross contamination possible. They also do not use any
baking sprays so their breads are 100% wheat flour
and water. More information can be found on their website at www.cavanaghco.com.
Also, the parish can provide low gluten hosts for those
parishioners who are not able to ingest gluten. These
hosts are baked by the Benedictine Sisters. The low
gluten bread is made with wheat starch and water. The
gluten content is less than 0.01%. It is made, stored,
and shipped in a designated area free from all other
wheat products. More information can be found on their
website at www.altarbreadsbspa.com.
SOUPER BOWL OF CARING: More than 20 years ago,
the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from
a single youth group. Since that day, more than 98 million
has been raised for local charities across the country
around Super Bowl weekend. Through this mission, young
people learn what it’s like to make a positive difference in
the world - as they collect food, raise money and volunteer
to work in charities to those in need. Be part of this movement that is sharing God’s love with those in need. Volunteers from SKY Youth Ministry will be collecting donations
after Mass. Every dollar donated goes to the Kilian Cupboard.
AN INVITATION FROM SAINT KILIAN

FOOD DONATIONS
Due to your generosity, for the month of January the
Food Pantry helped feed 147 families/319 individuals in
need. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul extends a
heartfelt THANK-YOU for your continued support of this
ministry!
The Food Pantry is always appreciative of your donations
(please do check to make sure donated items have not expired). This week, we are most in need of the following
items: cereal, canned chicken, canned Ravioli (meat
and cheese), SpaghettiOs, Tuna Helper (all flavors),
canned fruit, applesauce and pasta sauce.
The Food Pantry, located in the basement of the old rectory
in Mars at 205 Clark Street, is open every Wednesday from
3:00 until 6:00 pm.
FELLOWSHIP DINNERS
Over 140 dinners were served at our Fellowship Dinners in
January. Special thanks to the many volunteers from these
Parish groups who sponsored dinners last month:
SKPS Moms, Knights of Columbus, The Empty Nesters
CFM, Marilyn & Friends, and the Ladies Bible Study.
While our 2016 calendar is booked each week with dinner
sponsors, volunteers are always welcome to help out! Signup to volunteer on the “Volunteer Spot” on our Parish website.
These Wednesday evening meals are of great help to our
neighbors and provide food and fellowship for those in any
need. Dinner is served from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. every
Wednesday in the Parish Hall (next to the church in Mars on
the corner of Clark and Cherry Streets).
Religious Education News
EIGHTH GRADE CONFIRMATION: The Diocese of Pittsburgh has scheduled the Sacrament of Confirmation for the
8th grade students of our parish for Saturday, May 21, 2016
in the Auditorium of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High
School with Bishop David A. Zubik as the confirming bishop. Since our class size is over 180 students, we will have
two celebrations, one at 10 am and a second at 1 pm. Parents of 8th graders were emailed on December 14th information for choosing the time of Confirmation. If you did not
receive that email please contact Susan Bachner in the Religious Education Office.

MUSIC MINISTRY
Our Liturgy of the Word this weekend reminds us that we are called forth to spread the Good News. Liturgical Ministry is one
way in which many parishioners can answer that call. I’d like to share part of a paragraph that was written regarding parish ministry. “The average Catholic parish in north America has fewer than 10 percent of its registered members involved in various
parish activities. Generally, the activity involving the largest number of parishioners is some form of liturgical ministry. In order
to keep the ministries from mere “doing” and clearly understanding the liturgical ministries as our response to God’s presence
and call, we must include a spiritual component in our preparations for the ministry. That is, we must ensure that our liturgical
ministers understand that ours is a ministry, not a “job” and that we are called to live the deep meaning of the ministry. By
growing in this spiritual dimension of the liturgical ministry, we grow in our awareness of God’s abiding presence as well as in
our awareness that our call to serve reaches way beyond the hour or so that we spend weekly in church.” If you have an interest in any liturgical ministry, please see either of our priests, deacons or me, and we will gladly guide you to the best way to
serve the parish. (portions reprinted from Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press Collegeville, MN)

SCHOOL CORNER
The year has been going by so fast! In
Physical Education the students have been working very
hard to further their skills and knowledge of sports and
games. In all grade levels we have been participating in
light competitive games to stress rule following and sportsmanship. These activities have also provided the arena to
show how to incorporate God into the sports and activities
we love. The students are receiving lessons on how to
play by honoring the rules. We are learning that one must
play with dignity and respect to be considered a winner no
matter what the score is. The students are even making
their own connections to sporting events where they can
identify poor sports and their actions. I am very proud to
see the students support each other and encourage each
other to improve through these activities.
The elementary levels have been participating in games
with multiple rules and steps. They are taking the loco motor skills they have learned and applying them to now having to manipulate objects and use their coordination to accomplish a goal for the team.

game will begin at 6pm, followed by our 8th Grade Recognition Ceremony, and the Boys Game afterwards. Also
featuring our 1st and 2nd grade basketball players from
both schools in a skills exhibition.
Middle school students are participating in team building
activities that foster cooperation and fulfilling a specific role
in the team. They are also participating in scored activities
to emphasize winning and losing in respectful ways.
The lesson that follows any competition is the emotional
health necessary to be excited to win but not brag or belittle
others, and the ability to lose and not resort to unsportsmanlike behavior. As we begin each activity with the Diocesan Athletic Prayer, the kids see Christ in what we do and
they examine their actions to keep it that way.
THE CARING QUILT MINISTRY: Change in schedule for
February and March. Our work day will be February 13, instead
of our usual 4th Saturday due to our Lenten Day of Reflection. In March, we will meet on March 5th. The 4th Saturday of
March is Easter weekend. Quilts are always available at the
Parish Center. If you have any questions/comments, please
contact Betsy Pfendler at betsy000@zoominternet.net or 724766-7435. Thanks for all the continuing support!

In the Gospel today, the disciples decide to
leave everything to follow Jesus. We are also
called to follow Jesus, who tells us that
“whatever you do to the least of mine, you do
for me.” Your gift to the poor can bring the
love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and
doubt, loneliness and dread.
If you know of a family in need, please contact the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul by calling the parish
office.
The Wednesday Women’s
Bible Study meets every
Wednesday from 9:30 to
11:00 a.m. at the Parish Hall
in Mars. Beginning February 17th (through Lent) the group will begin the study
of the 7 Deadly Sins, 7 Lively Virtues.
Join the Bible Study for this engaging presentation concerning the seven deadly sins, those great spiritual blocks
that inhibit our flourishing in relationship with God and one
another. Based on Dante’s writings, the seven deadly sins
correspond to the seven stories of Dante’s Mt. Purgatory. Pride, envy, anger, sloth, gluttony, avarice and lust
are all presented as patterns of dysfunction within us that
lead to unhappiness.
Study guides can be purchased at the parish center or at
Bible Study for $15. Call Chris Hespenheide at 724-3161309 for more information.
