Page 2 Feast Day of St. Didacus “For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves?” What kind of dispute were the disciples having during the Passover feast? They were likely arguing about who should sit in the place of honor at the table. Aren't we like that?! We want the place of honor and recognition, especially when others will have to give notice and defer to us. (See Jesus' parable of the dinner guests in Luke 14:7-14.) Jesus did the unthinkable! He turned the world's value of greatness upside-down and he wedded authority with loving-sacrifice and with selfless -service. Authority without sacrificial love is brutish and self-serving. The way of greatness in God's kingdom is the way of servanthood and humility, putting others first in our care and concern. Jesus willingly laid down his life for our sake because he loved us first (John 3:16). He calls us to love as he did, by laying down our lives in sacrificial service for the good of others. An early church father summed up Jesus' teaching with the expression: to serve is to reign with Christ. We share in God's reign by laying down our lives in humble service of one another as Jesus did for our sake. Are you willing to put others first in your care and concern and to love them with the same merciful love that Jesus has for you? —http://www.rc.net St. Didacus, Our Patron Saint On our cover, St. Didacus is depicted with flowers spilling out from his robe. He had a fond devotion for the poor and was considered to have imprudent generosity in sharing with them the food that was meant for the friars. Legend has it, that while on his way to visit the poor with food wrapped in his habit he was stopped by his superior who suspected that he was taking food meant for the friars and asked to see what he was concealing. Knowing that he would be reprimanded, he answered that he was carrying flowers. When asked to reveal what he had, he opened the folds of his habit and a variety of flowers cascaded to the ground. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to carry on the mission of St. Didacus to offer food assistance to those in need in our parish and community. Page 5 Feast Day of St. Didacus November 9, 2014 San Diego is St. Didacus Patron Saint of the Diocese of San Diego and of our parish… When we think of St. Didacus, we may be tempted to think of him as a dusty old saint who may or may not have lived hundreds of years ago. But St. Didacus was a real person who lived a life of service as a Franciscan brother. He traveled extensively, by foot, he gardened, he had exemplary nursing skills, he had a tender heart and loved the poor and was dedicated to seeing them fed. Here are some pictures of people and places that were important in the life of St. Didacus... 3 2 1 House in San Nicolás del Puerto in Spain where San Diego reportedly was born in the year 1400 and was raised. 4 Holy Door of St. John Lateran, Rome, opened by Pope Nicholas V for the Jubilee and canonization of Bernardine of Siena. Other pilgrims to this jubilee who were later elevated to sainthood are: St. Catherine of Bologne, St. Rita of Cascia, St. John of Capistrano, St. John of March and St. Peter Regalado. Pictured: St. John of Capistrano In 1450, Diego was recalled to Spain from the Canary Islands, from which he went to Rome to share in the Jubilee Year proclaimed by Pope Nicholas V, and to be present at the canonization of Bernardine of Siena in 1450. While Diego was there, bubonic plague broke out and he nursed hundreds of Franciscans who were visiting Rome. In 1445, Diego was appointed as Guardian of the Franciscan community on the island of Fuerteventura, where the Observant Franciscans soon founded the Friary of St. Bonaventure. Friar Diego spent ten years from about 14311441 in the Convento de San Francisco, in Seville, Spain. The convent no longer exists, but every day Diego would visit the chapel of the Virgen de la Antigua. The chapel remains today and you can visit the same painting of the virgin that San Diego prayed before each day. 6 This is a view of the ruins of the Franciscan Convent of San Buenaventura on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura, where San Diego lived from 1441-1449. 7 5 Tower of the Iglesia Magistral in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, where the remains of San Diego rest in a side chapel. Pope Sixtus V (1585-1590). While beset by struggles in England, France, and Spain, he presided over the canonization of San Diego in 1588.
