B ack in the day, Basalt was a farming, logging and mining hub, sitting at the junction of two main western railways. Trains chugged aside the winding Fryingpan River to the mid-valley depot before continuing east to Aspen or west to Glenwood Springs. Today, Basalt is an idyllic mix of story-book charm and ever-increasing commercial vitality, the only town in the country to rise up from the confluence of two Gold Medal fly fishing rivers. Within the pages of this magazine, you’ll discover the magic that is our town. From the heart of historic downtown to the towering peaks of the Frying Pan Road’s Seven Castles. From the miles of mountain trails to the lively eateries and chic stores of the Willits Town Center. World-class dining, eclectic arts, recreation and adventure…. it’s all here and more. This is an unprecedented time of creativity and innovation in Basalt. We invite you to read about the soon-to-open Element Basalt hotel at Willits and the world-renowned Rocky Mountain Institute’s new Innovation Center in downtown along the Roaring Fork River. You’ll even find information about the unique “Our Town Planning” that has so impassioned our residents. Then when you can wait no longer, take a stroll down Midland Avenue, travel out to Ruedi Reservoir, hike or cross country ski on nearby trails, or listen to music unde the stars…. Discover first-hand why Basalt is the heart of the Roaring Fork Valley at the confluence of rivers, recreation and culture. At each edge of the old town core, stretching out from the confluence of the Fryingpan and Roaring Fork rivers are the newer Riverside Plaza and Riverwalk centers. Near the roundabout at Highway 82 lies one of three convenient gas stations and the two-level River Park Center with more restaurants and commercial space. On the hillside overlooking downtown Basalt with stunning views of the surrounding mountains is the “old” neighborhood with its charming mix of historic and beautifully renovated homes. Across the Fryingpan River, at the edge of town and along Basalt’s History Tour, are newer River Cove homes where the block is separated by landscaped alleys that give way to the more traditional neighborhood of Elk Run and the Columbines. There you’ll also find our friendly Town police and education campuses. Our downtown kids have the elementary and middle schools at their fingertips, literally! pines and firs. About four miles out look up to the left for a sight of the spectacular Seven Castles red-rock outcroppings. After another 10 miles you’ll arrive at the 997-acre Ruedi Reservoir. In autumn, watch for the pumpkins that mysteriously appear on roadside nooks and crannies, high ledges and rocks jutting up from the river. 3 2 Fryingpan River Valley Basalt Business Center + Southside East of Basalt, along the Gold Medal Fryingpan River, is the Fryingpan River Valley. With legends of mining, railway history and the early Colorado frontier, this area features sparsely populated ranches and valley homes set against the backdrop of the White River National Forest and Hunter Fryingpan Wilderness area, red sandstone cliffs, evergreen Situated on the south side of Highway 82 and Basalt Avenue is a neighborhood of the same name. Southside and the Basalt Business Center represent a healthy mix of residential, automotive, consignment stores and other retail and service businesses, including the largest home furnishings store in the valley. The neatly laid out Southside On Highway 82 between historic downtown Basalt and Willits sits Emma in unincorporated Pitkin County. There you can experience true Victorian vernacular with an old Victorian farmhouse, Emma Store, and the sweet Emma Schoolhouse. The Denver & Rio Grande Western Emma Train Station, which no longer exists, sat just behind the area of the schoolhouse and provided daily passenger service until mid-1922. The rail lines have since been replaced with a paved bike and pedestrian trail that extends from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and passes through an area offering spectacular views of Basalt Mountain, Mount Sopris, working ranches and farmlands. Emma is also home to beautiful mountain-ranch residential living. Located on East Valley Road, off Highway 82 and Original Road, the Mid-Valley Medical Center complex houses an ambulatory surgery center, physicians, clinics, and wellness businesses specializing in a variety of medical areas such as women’s care, pediatrics, orthopedics, dentistry and a fitness facility. The area is also home to a condominium complex, a retirement community and the Aspen-Basalt Campground. 6 Mid-Valley Design + Industrial Center If you need to get something done, visit the Mid-Valley Design + Industrial Center! This score of essential businesses is located off Highway 82 and Willits Lane. It is home to custom contractors, home improvement shops, decor design studios, coffee roasters and so much more. Also inside its perimeter you’ll find fitness gyms, FedEx, Soo Bahk Do, a world-renown photographer and is home to the unique Woody Creek Distillers. In 2014 the Basalt Recycle Center was relocated to the Design Center. 7 Willits Town Center Willits is a traditional community – a rich mix of houses and townhouses, parks and playgrounds, shops and businesses. Neighborhoods are orga- TO OUR TOW N Emma Mid-Valley Medical Center nized around parks and safe streets, and stores are planned along a conventional main street and a town square. The rolling terrain of the Village Green stretches the length of Willits and includes a lake, soccer field, playgrounds, biking and walking trails, along fields and meadows. Willits Town Center — now entering into another phase of development — is home to Whole Foods Market and is an inviting mix of restaurants, clothing retailers, beauty salons, sporting stores and Valley View Medical Center and affiliated physicians to name a few. Its traditional street level shopping with second-story lofts and condominiums is comfortable and functional. Almost completed is a 113-room Element by Westin hotel and a performing arts center is envisioned for another block in the Twon Center. | 4 5 W E LCOM E neighborhood consists of single family homes, duplexes, two parks, and a mixed-use space. For mid-valley emergency care, the Business Center has Aspen Valley Hospital’s After Hours Urgent Care Clinic and for our beloved family pets, Valley Emergency Pet Care. A huge plus— being only a stones throw from Basalt High School. Go Longhorns!! 8 Orchard Plaza Annexed into Basalt in 1994 and offering residents a variety of shopping and services, Orchard Plaza is located off Highway 82 and Willits Lane. Including a large City Market grocery, liquor and pet stores, dining establishments, UPS center, nail salon, movie theater and banks, the Plaza is bustling with activity. Orchard Plaza has come into its own in the last eight years and is still a local favorite for shopping and dining. Adjacent to the Plaza is the Sopris Village residential area. 9 El Jebel El Jebel is an unincorporated area just across Highway 82 from Orchard Plaza and the official Basalt town limits. There lies the local bowling alley, a garden center, fire station, preschool, restaurants and other retail and service businesses and is the gateway to the Missouri Heights residential area. 11 W E LCOM E east and west, one great town | TO OUR TOW N all of basalt T he beauty of Basalt is that it embraces its full and colorful heritage – both relative newcomers and those with farming, ranching and western roots. There are those who were born and raised in old Basalt and have spent multiple generations here. Then there are those who moved to town over the last 30 years searching for a better life, raising children, playing in the outdoors and maintaining a balance of all that makes life wonderful. Basalt is home to us all. Accenting this rich equilibrium are two distinct, but compatible, commercial and residential areas – downtown Basalt, a beautiful and historic center, where the lifeblood and soul of our community first emerged, and “West Basalt,” also known as Willits, where new ideas of modern community design embrace the energy trends found in many of the 12 country’s best young communities. Without one another, Basalt would not offer such depth and diversity. One complements the other and the same can be said for the businesses on both sides of town. With an eye on health, Burn Fitness Studio opened in downtown Basalt last year, bringing the boutique fitness studio model into town. In Willits, Valley View Hospital will open Willits Care Center. Occupying an entire floor, the center will host myriad specialty care physicians, increasing medical services to Basalt and the entire valley. The new building will provide a professional “Class A” medical and general office space complete with underground parking. Downtown, the lodge formerly known as the Green Drake remodeled and reopened as the Basalt Mountain Inn. Fresh and chic, the “new” Inn is within walking distance of historic Midland Avenue and all the nearby shops and restaurants. Across town, the Element by Westin hotel in Willits will open its doors in the winter of 2015. The new LEED-certified and eco-conscious hotel will offer 113 extended-stay rooms, a locally-owned coffee shop and convenient ski and bike rental shop. The hotel is expected to welcome more than 40,000 guests annually to Basalt. As if that were not enough, new parks, businesses, a performing arts center, activities and events are on Basalt’s western horizon. Alongside Willits are the older, established commercial centers of Orchard Plaza and El Jebel, with the City Market grocery store, a pet shop, restaurants and miscellaneous anchor stores. Between West Basalt and historic downtown are a plethora of shops, services and fitness centers in the Mid-Valley Design and Industrial Center and Basalt Business Center, along with the Mid-Valley Medical Center where the valley’s only out-patient surgery center is located. Connecting the full breadth of our beautiful community is the Rio Grande Trail. Did you know that for an intermediate rider, it takes less than 20 minutes to ride between the two ends of our town and less than five minutes by car? Under consideration is a crosstown shuttle or complimentary transit service that will provide our residents and guests a car-free connection to enjoy all that Basalt has to offer. Visit www.BasaltChamber.com and look under the “Chamber” tab for a listing of Basalt’s businesses and their locations. Before the hustle of children running to the school bus or parents bicycling to work begins, there is a dedicated group of early risers, out in the first light of morning, gathering in the parks and greenbelts of this community. They come from the single-family homes, townhomes and lofts, walking their dogs, drinking coffee or out for a morning run. They greet one another by first names. They know each other’s spouses, children and even their dogs. It is the essence of community living at Willits, and one that people here cherish. Willits, located in Basalt along Highway 82 just three minutes west of downtown, began as a vision more than 20 years ago. The idea was to create a community based on New Urbanism, a movement that promotes pedestrian-oriented, walkable neighborhoods, a mixture of compatible uses and a range of housing options and densities planned in a traditional neighborhood design. The community moniker “Willits” is for the original landowners, whose family ranch is still located off of Willits Lane. At the end of the 19th century Basalt was known for agriculture and access to the Roaring Fork River– now a Gold Medal-designated river– located just a short walk from the Willits neighborhood. One of the highlights of the Willits neighborhood is the extended greenway with paved walkways, children’s playground, sports field and large irrigation lake which attracts a great variety of birds and protected riparian vegetation. At the west end of the greenway are retail shops, services, business and medical offices at Willits Town Center. Whole Foods Market is the original anchor tenant of Willits Town Center, with nearby Kitchen Collage, Basalt Bike and Ski, Bristlecone Mountain Sports, Four Dogs Wine and Spirits, and other home décor and clothing shops. Additionally, many of the best restaurants in the midvalley call Willits home, including Smoke Modern BBQ, El Korita, Sure Thing Burger, Mauka Frozen Yogurt and Starbucks. New anchors are on their way, reinforcing Willits as a destination and strengthening the larger Basalt community. This year Dr. Tim Bauer opened Bauer Eye Care in Willits, and art galleries and new services are slated. This summer Valley View Hospital will open the expansive Willits Care Center, and at the end of the year, Element by Westin will debut as Basalt’s new 113-room hotel, with a pool, courtyard, spacious lobby, meeting room, locally owned coffee shop and bike and ski rental shop. On the residential side two new contemporary townhome buildings are open and beautiful single family homes are being built regularly. “There is a special vibe in Willits. It’s very welcoming,” says Tim Belinski, managing director of development for Independence Ventures. “The growth is exciting and people in Basalt are curious and supportive of that. We are all excited to see it built out as quickly as possible, bringing in more local retail and becoming a place where visitors and people from throughout the valley can enjoy the great surroundings.” It has been decades in the making, but today, the energy of Willits and a stronger Basalt community is being realized, one family, one visitor, one morning at a time. Parks, hotels, trails, brew pubs, coffee houses, riverfront attractions and much more sparked public interest as the community focused on redevelopment opportunities for the former Pan & Fork mobile home park, Lions Park and the former Clark’s Market site. These three parcels are keystones in the downtown rejuvenation effort, which is at the heart of the “Our Town” process, a two-year, unprecedented journey into public-based planning through participatory democracy. The resulting groundswell of citizen engagement has already succeeded in revitalizing interest in Basalt’s historic downtown core. 26 Members of the Downtown Area Advisory Committee explore park and development options on a map of the historic downtown core. Photo courtesy of Town of Basalt. Democratic Vitality The “Our Town” planning approach was initiated in October 2013 in an effort to weave new colors into the Basalt community fabric and breathe new life into Midland Avenue businesses. Rather than waiting for developers to initiate plans for the town’s future, “Our Town” is driven by public vision that lays the groundwork for the way Basalt will evolve as a healthy, sustainable community. The first step was the passage of a $5 million bond issue in November 2013 to fund the removal of the Pan & Fork trailer park and the restoration of the Roaring Fork River banks to alleviate flood plain threats. This launched a dynamic expression of public engagement that brought citizens out of the woodwork to play a direct role in forming a conceptual future for their community. An ongoing debate over the W E LCOM E | TO OUR TOW N Site preparation for Basalt’s future Riverfront Park was completed in the fall of 2014. Paul Andersen photo. appropriate balance between a riverfront park and commercial development along the Roaring Fork River emerged as a focal point in a process that has engaged the people of Basalt in looking at their community through the lens of participation. That’s where the passion and vision described by Mike Scanlon come in. The execution phase began in late 2014 when another degree of input came through the Downtown Area Advisory Committee (DAAC), a group of ten volunteer citizens appointed by the Town Council. DAAC spent ten weeks translating “Our Town” maps and surveys into an overarching planning document and conceptual planning map. DAAC recommendations – the foremost of which is connectivity to the rivers – are being factored into the Basalt Master Plan to provide a template for the Town’s Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) and Town Council. The DAAC report also informs and guides potential developers on how to incorporate the community’s vision in preparing their proposals. Community Engagement Meanwhile, Rocky Mountain Institute is under construction on its riverfront Innovation Center, building what will become one of the highestperforming buildings in the world with its net-zero-energy design and deep green construction. The Roaring Fork Conservancy has plans for a River Center next door that is envisioned to provide educational opportunities for children and adults, with an ecological focus on rivers and healthy aquatic ecosystems. The challenge for Basalt in the immediate future will be applying public input to redevelopment of the former mobile home park site, a charge that falls to the P&Z and then to Town Council. Pertinent issues in- clude affordable housing mitigation, building height, density, integration with the adjacent park, economic viability and open space. Any action will be linked to the “Our Town” approach, which shapes community vision through public input and builds community through shared ideas expressed through an orchestrated, civil dialogue. This is where the community’s passion, vision and execution meld into a unique social dynamic on which the Town of Basalt is breaking new ground. More information about this process is available on the “Our Town Planning” website: www.ourtownplanning.org. Paul Andersen is facilitator and moderator for the “Our Town” process. He is a book author and journalist living up the Frying Pan at Seven Castles. 27 W E LCOM E THROUGH DOWNTOWN BASALT B | asalt was formed in the late 1800s. Settlement of the West was influenced by many factors: miners looking for precious metals; ranchers providing meat, grains and vegetables; and the railroads, which served both. Railroads became lifelines that carried ore, supplies and people. The first settlement, built in 1882, was a tent city called Fryingpan on the south side of the Frying Pan River. It was created to house the men working the charcoal kilns which remain today. TO OUR TOW N A Historic Walk Colorado Midland Railway In 1883, the Colorado Midland Railroad (CMR) was created from Colorado Springs to Buena Vista. In 1885 the CMR began tunneling between towns, linking east and west Colorado. The railroad was constructed to serve the growing mining industry and to efficiently ship agricultural products. The triangle of land in the center of town where the Chamber Caboose sits was the original Wye, three tracks where trains could be turned around. By 1886 Aspen Junction (present-day Basalt) began to form with a “boarding house, general store and seven saloons.” The town was a railroad camp, housing crews needed for the construction of the CMR. Colorado Midland Depot Constructed in 1886, the Railroad Depot was the first passenger loading area and mail station in the central valley. Many a newly arrived resident spent their first night on the benches of the depot. As the transportation hub of the valley, the Depot was a source of pride and the center of the town. In 1892, fire devastated the western 28 end of town completely destroying the depot which was quickly rebuilt. Swinging Bridge In 1880, prior to Basalt’s formation, a one-lane post-and-beam wooden structure was built over the Fryingpan as a wagon bridge for horse and stage traffic passing from Aspen to Glenwood. Regular wash-outs of the bridge resulted in frequent reconstruction. The Town replaced it in 2001 with the existing state-of-the-art swinging bridge. Still used by residents to access the school and downtown, the swinging bridge has become a cherished part of Basalt. Working Bridges In the 1800s bridges were a crucial lifeline for commerce and travel, and the untamed rivers often washed them away in the spring. In 1937 the Colorado Highway Department acquired the original railroad bridge where it crosses the Frying Pan just above its junction with the Roaring Fork and converted it to a highway automobile bridge. Highway 82 became the main route for traffic up and down the valley. The Charcoal Kilns In 1880, 900 Aspenites were employed in the silver mines. The mining produced raw ore which required initial smelting before being shipped for refinement. Demand from the Aspen smelters for refining charcoal, which burns hotter than wood, resulted in the construction of seven kilns in Basalt by the Aspen Silver Company in 1884. The availability of fuel from the vast stands of pine and pinion trees was the main reason for the selection of this site. The kilns were constructed of unfired The Aostans While mining and railroads provided stimulus to the Basalt economy, early ranchers and farmers were the backbone of our culture and carried the Valley’s economy from the early 1900s until the ski days. Notably, the small Italian valley of Aosta provided a number of families that framed our future. Seeing similarities to their homeland, they recognized its potential for an agricultural lifestyle rather than the unfamiliar miners’ lives they lived in Aspen. They began to find opportunities to purchase and settle farm and ranch lands. The Luchsinger Halfway House In the early 1880s, the Luchsingers built a halfway house to house passengers on the stage line which traveled from Glenwood to Aspen. The house was the first home constructed in the central valley and what is now Basalt. The Luchsingers probably housed some of the men who worked on the charcoal kilns. TO OUR TOW N The Colorado Midland Hotel was constructed in 1896 to service the growing needs of Basalt. Originally owned by Dr. Thompson and Mr. Bear, the hotel had 10 sleeping rooms, a dining hall and a saloon. Rumor has it that ladies of the night could often be seen up and down the stairs as the saloon below provided ample customers. Throughout the quiet years the hotel had many owners and uses, but in 1965, as the upper valley ski areas began to generate more economic growth, the Hotel was returned to a restaurant with upstairs apartments. Constructed as a residence circa 1890, Frank Snell’s home was destroyed in the fire of 1897 that devastated the western end of Basalt. Frank, an engineer for the Colorado Midland, rebuilt his new home of brick. Little has changed today except for its use. | The Railroad Hotel The Snell Building W E LCOM E brick and native stone. They appear to have been constructed with an outside coating of standard mortar for protection from the elements. The Splendid Spud By 1922 more potatoes were grown in the valley than any other crop. While cattle were a more profitable source of income, almost all locals allocated a part of their lands for potatoes. Well drained and with adequate water for irrigation, the potato thrived and carried many a family through the Great Depression. At the peak, the Roaring Fork Valley shipped over 3.5 million pounds of potatoes to other markets each year. Although a simple crop, the potato required extensive labor, requiring long hours during the growing and harvesting season. The Ranchers While mining and railroads provided stimulus to the Basalt economy, the ranchers and farmers of the valley have provided the consistent backbone of our culture and economy. Arriving in the valley in 1880, settlers found rich soil and good grass. By 1881, 20 families had acquired land, intending to settle and create their lives as farmers and ranchers. More arrived through the 1880s, and soon they were running cattle and producing crops – vegetables and hay – for their own use and for the miners who began to flood the valley in their quest for minerals. Cattle production and grazing in the high country is still an important and honored part of Basalt’s culture. Our Reinventing Fire analysis (first published in 2011 under a book of the same name) maps pathways for running a 158%-bigger U.S. economy in 2050 but needing no oil, coal, or nuclear energy. To achieve this ambitious energy transformation, RMI and Carbon War Room merged in a strategic alliance in late 2014. In tandem we’re working in the U.S., China and the Caribbean to drastically tackle climate change, unlock enormous economic opportunity, and make our energy systems clean, prosperous and secure. High-impact projects focus on increasing the share of renewable energy in the electricity sector, superefficient buildings, oil-free mobility, and establishing a rapid “Reinventing Fire” strategy for China. Global Influence, Local Presence RMI’s decision to establish a home in downtown Basalt has both strategic and historic significance. 31 W E LCOM E | TO OUR TOW N The Basalt location is just down the road from where RMI was founded over 32 years ago and where our co–founder and chief scientist, Amory Lovins, lives in his legendary energy-efficient home. RMI’s presence in the Roaring Fork Valley is an important ingredient in our ability to reach out to and collaborate with the global leaders crucial to our market-driven approach to shifting from fossil fuels to efficiency and renewables. The new building with its convening center—the White Steyer Impact Studio—will provide an amazing venue to do just that amidst a beautiful natural setting that will foster innovation and serve as a constant reminder of why we do the work we do. The Pinnacle of Efficient, Cost-Effective and Integrative Design Thanks to a dedicated and innovative design team, the 15,600-square-foot Innovation Center (planned for 50 employees and convening events with up to 80 people) will be a showcase of energy-efficient design and technologies, achieving net-zero energy. There are several things that set our building apart, including an integrated project delivery process (an approach that helps reduce the time and cost of a project by aligning the project team with common goals and objectives), ultra-low energy use, substantial on-site renewable energy generation, redefining occupant thermal comfort, and a pioneering graywater system. 32 Ultra-Low Energy Use Our building has exceptionally low energy demands—four times less than the average energy use intensity for office buildings in the U.S., even before renewables are factored in. With our rooftop solar panels, we will generate not only enough energy to meet the building’s needs but also some of our commuting needs. Solar energy will also power our on-site electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Eventually, two-way charging will enable the EV batteries to store energy and power the building during peak times. Redefining Thermal Comfort In addition to our super-insulating building envelope and passive solar design (think of it like a down coat with sun glasses), one of the major reasons our energy use is so low is that we are shifting the way the building’s occupants will stay comfortable. Most buildings condition the entire volume of air including the top four feet of air above people’s heads. Instead, we are heating and cooling the people themselves, not the space, by looking at all six factors that affect a person’s thermal comfort—air temperature, wind speed, humidity, clothing level, activity level, and the temperature of the surrounding surfaces. This is a relatively new approach of applying thermal comfort science and we are embracing it as has never been done before. This cuts our energy use 75 percent and enables us to entirely eliminate a central air conditioning system and minimize heating to a small, distributed system. Perhaps more exciting and significant is the building’s potential influence and impact. Some 90 percent of commercial buildings are less than 25,000 square feet. Offices are the largest use of commercial buildings of this size. By sharing our approach and lessons learned, our goal is to influence other building owners to follow suit, minimizing their environmental impact and creating incredible workspaces, all without breaking the bank. Just a few doors down, Cassie’s Corner Store puts a healthy, local, organic twist on the classic convenience store, offering house-made deli sandwiches, pizzas, milkshakes and smoothies alongside a wide variety of snacks and fresh brewed, Basalt-roasted Rock Canyon Coffee. If you’ve got time for a more leisurely lunch, there’s no place on a sunny day like the patio of the Riverside Grill, whose view of the Fryingpan River makes it the best place to dine in the valley on warm summer afternoons. Chef Martin Oswald puts out a mid-day menu featuring everything from Baja-style fish tacos (highly recommended) to juicy burgers and healthy quinoa and beet salads, and the restaurant serves dinner as well. Those eager to sample the culinary tradition imported by the Roaring Fork Valley’s vibrant Latino community should try the newly-opened Cocina del Valle, a cooperatively owned restaurant run by 12 local Latino families and features traditional Mexican cooking. The restaurant is supported by the Valley Settlement Project of the Manaus Fund, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping immigrants integrate successfully into local life. If you’re heading to the hills and need picnic provisions for an outdoor adventure, try sampling the signature goat cheeses for sale at the award winning Avalanche Cheese Company and ask about their house-made charcuterie, or cured meats. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner and is renowned for BBQ pork spare ribs, smoked beef brisket and pulled pork. Season your meat with four signature sauces including a vinegary North Carolina variety, a sweet Kansas City sauce, a spicy Texas blend and a Georgia gold mustard. Next door to Smoke is El Korita, a restaurant lauded for its wide range of Mexican seafood dishes. Diners rave about the fresh ceviche—citrus-cured fish or shrimp seasoned with onions, peppers, salt and other spices. The fish and shrimp tacos—available grilled or fried—are delicious, and the restaurant also serves more esoteric maritime delicacies like stuffed oysters. Thirsty locals flock on Friday nights for notoriously strong margaritas and waits are common during peak times, so arrive early. Rounding out this eclectic array of dining options in this corner of Willits is K’Gen Asian Cuisine, which serves classic Japanese sushi alongside a wide variety of other dishes with Thai, Chinese and Indonesian influences. Come on Friday and Saturday nights for live jazz, country or pop music from local musicians like Haden Gregg, Dana Underwood and the Uptown Strutters. If you arrive hungry, El Jebel’s long running, unapologetically unpretentious greasy spoon diner Breakfast in America is certain to satisfy. BIA serves 38 breakfast all day, offers unlimited, serve-yourself coffee and gives patrons an unobstructed view of the kitchen from counter style seats. El Jebel is also known for its surplus of Italian-inspired dining options. At the Downvalley Tavern, which owner Drew Scott describes as “one part mountain tavern, one part Italy and one part pig obsessed,” diners enjoy fresh takes on classic dishes like chicken Milanese alongside locally-rooted items like the Coloradoan, a burger with Avalanche cheese, bacon, red onion jam and Fat Tire mustard. Scott prides himself on making all he can from scratch: he cures meats, pickles cucumbers and makes his own pasta and sauces. The tavern serves lunch, dinner, and brunch on Sunday, but is known among locals for its generous weekday happy hour: half off on drinks and appetizers from 4-6 p.m. Around the corner at Bella Mia, an Italian mainstay now celebrating its 23rd year in business, owner Joy Maniloff serves up thin crust pizzas cooked in a fruitwood-fired oven (she roasts a whole chicken in the oven as well), alongside Italian pasta dishes like linguine alla vongole, (linguine with clams and white wine sauce) and the Valley’s finest spaghetti alla puttanesca—roasted red peppers, garlic, olives, fresh tomatoes and capers. If it’s not Italian you’re in the mood for, El Jebel is home to plenty of other foreign fare, including two of the Valley’s best-regarded Asian eateries. Sushi Ya Go Go offers tasty, inventive sushi rolls and other Japanese cuisine at affordable prices, set against a backdrop of peppy pop music and occasional samurai-esque cries from behind the counter as chef/ owner Hide Tsuzuki revels in his work. Meanwhile, just across Highway 82, chef Paula Runsawang and her team of Thai chefs at Bangkok Happy Bowl cook up traditional, seasonal Thai fare, offering affordable lunch specials and a full dinner menu of classics like pad thai, curries and papaya salad. For more dining options, visit the Basalt Dining Guide at EatBasalt. com. arly last Christmas morning, Scott Picard and his head chef at Sure Thing Burger hopped in Picard’s truck with a sack full of gustatory gifts. The men carried 200 breakfast burritos, and on a day when most small business owners were enjoying some rare time off with their families, Picard and his chef spent the morning crisscrossing the Roaring Fork Valley, searching for laborers who’d been asked to work on Christmas Day. When they found these unfortunate souls, they simply introduced themselves, handed over free burritos and continued on their way. “They were so happy to see us,” Picard recalls. “They thanked us and asked who we were. They had a deep appreciation for a local business that was willing to do something like that.” For Picard, this Christmas Day burrito operation was just the latest example of a community-based marketing strategy that has served him well since he founded the “better burger” joint Sure Thing Burger in Willits in the fall of 2013. In a small town like Basalt, Picard believes that simple word-of-mouth beats newspaper, radio or social media advertising any day. He never runs promotions, specials or giveaways, he doesn’t tweet and he hasn’t checked his company’s Facebook page in months. Rather than building buzz, Picard focuses on building a tight-knit community of the sort he encountered when he first arrived in Aspen as a ski bum in the early 1980s. “It’s about offering what’s affordable and what a family can realistically afford,” he says. “I grew up with that traditional happy hour, where for $2 you could get a beer and a plate of food. I found that in Aspen in the 80’s, and now that’s what we’re trying to bring to Basalt.” To be sure, Picard’s menu is a league apart from ‘80s happy hour fare: his beef patties are made with premium 7X Beef raised in Hotchkiss, his buns come fresh daily from Louis Swiss Pastry in Aspen and he sources beer from Carbondale and ice cream from Boulder among other Colorado ingredients. Yet despite its pedigree, Sure Thing remains affordable and unpretentious: Burgers are priced at less than $7, and Picard recently hosted a $2 Taco Tuesday special, serving food truck-style slow roasted pork shoulder tacos wrapped in locally-made tortillas. His only advertising for the event was a letter-sized page hung in the restaurant’s front window. Nevertheless, people came in droves. “Why was that such a success?” he asks. “Because it was about good food, but it was also about community. You don’t the menu carnit have to fly a really big banner, either literally as corn tortillas or figuratively. If it’s a good product, in this by la roca onions + cila ntro town, everyone talks. THE MYRIAD WAYS FLY FISHING WILL MAKE YOU “RICH” big dollars or big love for what you “do” and where you get to do it. This applies to Colorado as a whole, as hobbies and outside interests define who we are more than our occupations. This is a good thing. Being a full-time fishing guide or ski instructor won’t make you monetarily rich, but again, wealth is measured a little differently here. Sitting on the side of the river with a cold beer and hot sunburn after a long day of fishing makes most of us exponentially happier than constantly fretting about portfolios, returning emails and meeting deadlines. What makes me feel rich as a sultan is walking out the front door of my tiny cabin on the Fryingpan and casting flies to plump and willing trout. Having amazing high country lakes like Cathedral and American just a hop and skip away will make just about anyone thankful. Floating the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers with twolegged and fourlegged friends on days off make me feel like I have the world by the tail, and hiking up Rocky Fork Creek and tempting wild cutthroat with little hopper patterns makes all of my cares drift away, literally. And the real kicker is that I get to fly fish anytime I care to, winter, spring, summer and fall. Compared to the wind and icefilled moonscape of most of Wyoming or Montana during winter, we enjoy OUTD OORS O ne of the main reasons I call the Roaring Fork Valley home is the sheer variety of places, beautiful places, to fly fish. I was a little lost at one point of my life and this valley saved me. It saved me from the dense hustle and bustle of city life, saved me from self-doubt and saved me from myself. I am not saying that city-dwellers are doomed, it just wasn’t the place for me. When you’re surrounded by raw beauty and a sense of adventure, everything else seems to click into place. Getting out of the city and on a gold medal trout stream leads to the realization that it’s not all about you. There is something larger and more mysterious at work here in the Roaring Fork Valley, and once you accept it, your outlook on life inevitably changes. You gradually become more thankful and less self-absorbed, to put it in a nutshell. Anyone who makes a living doing what they love has a leg up on the rest. Wealth is measured here in two ways, | by Scott Spooner 45 RIV E R S + F I S H IN G | OUTD OORS rock solid winter “off season” fishing. We don’t have a monopoly on our fishing scene here. We proudly and happily share it with everyone. Fly fishing invariably leads you to beautiful landscapes, as trout seem to naturally gravitate to such places. Cold and clean water is a rapidly disappearing commodity; it’s a valuable asset distinct to this valley and there are plenty of good people around here fighting to keep it so. Everyone can do their part to keep our backyard special, whether it is picking up litter while astream, donating your time (or wealth) to organizations like the Roaring Fork Conservancy or even something as simple as watering your lawn less and taking shorter showers. When you fly fish outside of our valley, you learn right away what a unique and special ecosystem we enjoy here. There is something truly special about the Roaring Fork Valley, and once the scales are peeled from your eyes, you just get it. Whether you’ve had opportunities to fish all over the world or if you’ve never held a fly rod in your hand, this valley has fish throughout that will make you feel like a local pro. For those who have never fly fished but are called to try it, do your homework but don’t get over- 46 whelmed. When I travel outside of the valley, stopping in the local fly shop is a no-brainer. Most shop people elsewhere in the world covet their special spots like a squirrel hiding nuts for winter. I can safely say you won’t run into much of that around here, thankfully. Most valley fly shops have long since come to grips with “outsiders” fishing our waters (because the majority of us aren’t from here either) and realize if it weren’t for tourism, we’d all be doing something else, somewhere else, to make ends meet. Be sure to read river reports, look at hatch charts and spend a little time with a local fly shop to get situated on locations, bugs and especially techniques. This applies to anglers who really know their stuff, too. We fish a little differently around here than back east or up in Montana and asking about local tech will save you from a frustrating day. If you fly fish back home and have a technique or killer fly you specialize in, bring that knowledge to the table. If you fish confidently on home waters with certain tricks or bugs, chances are our fish will cooperate with you. The reality is that most shops are pushing similar patterns throughout different hatches, and if you offer up something a little different, it will oftentimes seal the deal. Roaring Fork Valley fish aren’t stupid, though. Shapes, sizes, colors and especially actions of flies are important. When you’re in a swarm of size 18 darkbodied caddis, a size 12 creamcolored artificial just won’t get it done. We’re not the only ones here enjoying the finer things in life; the fish just don’t realize they are spoiled rotten compared to their cousins in other waters. If you are drawn to this valley to fish, as I was, timing can be medal waters. Whether we’re talking about skiing, ranching or fishing, the fecundity of this valley is derived from its water. Our wealth literally falls from the sky and pays daily dividends in the form of champagne powder snow, clean and cold rivers and a breathtaking landscape hewn over the centuries by that very same water. I feel quite rich living here. I hope all of you get a chance to take a moment to bask in the luxury that we all realize here in Basalt and the Roaring Fork Valley. | OUTD OORS April and May bring about the first real awakenings of insect life other than midges, and our Tax Day and Mother’s Day caddis hatches will blow your mind. Everyone thinks the Arkansas River is caddis central, but locals know better and keep it pretty hush-hush. Aspen is a mecca and playground for the affluent, but the true wealth of the Roaring Fork Valley lies in its deep lakes, roaring rivers, bubbling brooks and abundant gold RIV E R S + F I S H IN G crucial if you want to catch some of the prolific insect hatches we enjoy. The flip side of this is that there are always fish willing to eat, regardless of season or conditions. You can fish dry flies literally every day of the year here, if you’re stubborn enough to find rising fish. If you want to cast dry flies as big as corn chips, be here in July, August and September. If throwing large streamers is your one joy in life, September and October are calling your name. keep colorado Beautiful! Have your car’s cosmetic damage repaired by the Experts! Reserve 1/2 cup. To the remaining pancetta, add in butter, oil, shallots, asparagus and mushrooms and continue sautéing about 5 minutes or until liquid from mushrooms has cooked off. Mixture should be rich and fragrant. In a separate pan, lightly sautee the spinach with a small amount of olive oil. Reserve 1/2 cup. Cover the bottom of your baking pan with a 1/4” of broth. Spread the spinach along with the pancetta and vegetable mixture in an elongated mound in the center of the pan. Prep your fish by seasoning with salt and pepper, then stuff the cavity with the reserved pancetta and spinach. Place the fish in the baking pan on top of the pancetta and vegetable mixture. Before placing in the oven, finish off by squeezing half (or more) of a lemon on to the fish. While fish is baking, prepare rice to serve under fish and vegetables. If you want to wow your guests, try preparing a wild mushroom risotto. It is more time consuming, but well worth every savory bite! Bake covered at 375° until fish is no longer transparent; approximately 30 minutes depending on the size of the fish. OUTD OORS WINTER Serve on a bed of arugula with grilled asparagus 2 medium whole trout, cleaned 4lemons 16 stalks of asparagus 1 large leek, wash thoroughly 6 oz arugula, washed and dried 1/4 c dijon mustard 1/2 tsp dill 1/4 c olive oil — salt and pepper to taste 1. Cut the green ends from the leek and cut into thin strips lengthwise, set aside. You may prefer to cut the leek then wash the strips. If so, use a salad spinner to dry them very well. Using a zester, zest as much of the four lemon rinds as possible, set aside. 2. Prep your fish by seasoning with dill, salt and pepper, then stuff the cavity with lemon slices, lemon zest and some uncooked leek straws. You may want to let the fish rest in the refrigerator for an hour to absorb flavors. 3. Heat your grill to medium. Oil the grill racks thoroughly with an oiled paper towel and tongs. I find it easiest to grill the leeks and asparagus before the fish because they cook so quickly and need to be watched constantly. Opening and closing the grill will lower the temperature and the fish may take longer to cook. 4. Place the dry leeks and asparagus (coated lightly in olive oil) across the upper grill rack and watch them closely. These will burn quickly. Leeks should have some char on them, while not being completely burnt. Asparagus should be blistered. You may also grill some of the lemon slices! 5. While the fish is cooking prepare the dressing. In a small bowl, mix the dijon mustard, oil, juice of two lemons and salt and pepper. Beat well. 6. Place fish on the grill and cook until the fish is no longer transparent; approximately 20-30 minutes depending on the size of the fish. 7. Place the asparagus over the cool arugula and arrange the charred leeks around the platter. Place fish on top and serve with mustard and lemon dressing on the side. 49 RIV E R S + F I S H IN G by Heather Lewin, Watershed Action Director and Christina Medved, Watershed Education Director, at Roaring Fork Conservancy D owntown Basalt, CO is nestled at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan rivers. Anglers from all over the world are drawn to Basalt where one cannot enter or exit the downtown core without crossing or following the river. Whether you’ve cast a line in the Gold Medal waters or just appreciated their calming presence, our two rivers help define the character of our community. At Roaring Fork Conservancy (RFC), we are continuously working to protect the essential character of our valley’s rivers. | OUTD OORS water, water everywhere Since 1996, RFC’s vision has been to inspire individuals to explore, value and protect the Roaring Fork Watershed. As one of the largest watershed organizations in Colorado, RFC’s school- and community-based programs work to protect our rivers by keeping water in the streams, monitoring water quality and preserving riparian habitat. The Watershed Action program addresses current issues and future threats to watershed health and vitality. Proactive science and watershed planning help inform decision-makers and drive on-theground improvement and restoration projects. Observation Leads to Action The Fryingpan Valley was home to Native American hunting 50 parties, miners, railroaders, ranchers and outdoor enthusiasts since it was first explored in 1880. Though transportation mechanisms and food acquisition have changed, the area continues to draw recreationists from all over the world. At the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan rivers, fishing abounds for amateurs and professionals alike – all looking to hook the “big one.” When one frequents an area with a naturalist’s eye, studying the clues that lead to a prized pisces catch, he or she becomes a keen observer of plants, animals and insects who also inhabit the area. Such acute observations were integral when, in 2013, local anglers approached RFC concerned with low winter flows, formation of anchor ice, the apparent decrease in American Dipper and aquatic macroinvertebrate (i.e. caddisflies, mayflies, stoneflies, etc.) populations and, in turn, the potential impacts on the health of the Fryingpan River. Flows during the winter of 2012-13 were maintained at a meager 40cfs for over three and a half months. In response, RFC’s comprehensive Lower Fryingpan Assessment looked at the aquatic macroinvertebrate population, Didymo or “rock snot” dispersal, the American Dipper population, historic temperatures and the economic importance of this Gold Medal fishery to the surrounding area. Documenting the relationship between the ecological health of the Fryingpan River and economic vitality of Basalt underscores the inextricable link between river and community. These rivers are the lifeblood of Basalt. They are home to local fish and other aquatic life, provide employment, and feed the thriving tourist economy. Wandering through downtown Basalt in the early morning of any summer month, one is as likely to see waders and boots as shorts and flip flops. Experience Influences Education Inspiring people to take action requires knowledge. Each year RFC’s Watershed Education Citizen Engagement RFC actively works to engage interested members of the public at all levels of river work though volunteer programs such as Colorado River Watch, Hot Spots for Trout and the annual Fryingpan Cleanup. RFC main- OUTD OORS Where better to teach and learn fly fishing then at the confluence of two world-renowned Gold-Medal fishing rivers? Seizing the opportunity to create lifelong anglers and river stewards, RFC educators partner with the National Fishing in the Schools Program to use their fly fishing curriculum to train local teachers. Fishing in the rivers helps students understand and utilize their learning through RFC education programs. While casting and landing the “big catch,” lessons in the classroom come to life on the river. Data on how cool water temperatures and high-dissolved oxygen levels support a diverse aquatic insect population and, in turn, a healthy fishery is now in the palm of their hands…. or at the end of their line. | Fishing in Schools tains 23 River Watch sites in the Roaring Fork Valley and mentors nine volunteer Stream Teams who assist with year-round sample collections and lab work. The data generated through this program is used to monitor stream health, generate reports, document baseline conditions and inform local decision makers. Hot Spots for Trout began in 2012 in response to low snowpack drought conditions. This program brought more than 50 volunteers to 21 locations throughout the valley to monitor water temperatures and create an awareness of the detrimental effects of rising water temperatures on resident trout populations. This data was shared with local anglers as well as Colorado Parks and Wildlife to inform users where fish may be stressed. Every April around Earth Day, RFC brings the community together for the Fryingpan River Cleanup. After a hefty breakfast provided by RFC, more than 150 volunteers collect trash and treasures along the Fryingpan River from Ruedi to the confluence of the Roaring Fork River. Public involvement and engagement is integral to the success of our rivers, our community, RFC’s mission, the Town of Basalt and all the animals and plants that call these rivers home. So the next time you drive up the Frying Pan Road or cross a bridge around town, consider taking a moment to connect with the river. Watch it flow over the rocks, listen to it move down the valley, or try to spot a fish. Imagine where this water has been and where it is going. A healthy river supports a healthy community. In Basalt, we consider it a gift and a privilege to have two. RIV E R S + F I S H IN G programs reach thousands of students and adults with hands-on, exploratory experiences. Each spring, the hydroplant below Ruedi Reservoir is opened to the public for viewing of the turbines and learning about the electricity generated for the City of Aspen. The Reservoir, built as compensatory storage for the Fryingpan-Arkansas Transmountain Diversion Project, not only generates hydropower in this valley but also is a recreational mecca for boating, camping and fishing. Transmountain diversions move water from one watershed into another for municipal, recreational and agricultural uses and for fish and wildlife enhancement. The Roaring Fork Valley has two of the five largest transbasin diversions in Colorado: Twin Lakes Tunnel which diverts from headwaters of the Roaring Fork River and Boustead Tunnel which diverts from the headwaters of the Fryingpan River above Ruedi. Both tunnels divert 38-41% of water from their respective headwater streams that would naturally flow west, down the Roaring Fork to the Colorado River, but instead flow east to the headwaters of the Arkansas River. Every summer, RFC provides the opportunity for the public to view the inside of Twin Lakes Tunnel, a 4.5 mile long tunnel near Independence Pass. RFC educators also teach multiunit programs for students at Basalt Elementary School, Basalt Middle School and the surrounding valley. Why spend time with local students? The children we teach are our future water leaders, business owners, and elected officials. It is our responsibility to ensure they understand the value of water and the integral role it plays in everyday life. Around the town of Basalt you’ll find Pitkin and Eagle counties, the Basalt State Wildlife Area, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) areas, and the White River National Forest. The town of Basalt offers something for every type of outdoor adventurer from the most serious hikers, to avid road and mountain bikers, to visitors looking for a nice stroll around town. Surrounding this area just waiting to be explored are beautiful rivers, paths, bridges, and trails that highlight Basalt’s wonderful history. Basalt is easily found between the towns of Aspen and Carbondale on the Rio Grande Trail, a 42-mile paved path and former rail corridor of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. This amazing trail links together the entire Roaring Fork Valley, from Aspen to Glenwood Springs. Another connection to Basalt, spurring off the Rio Grande Trail, is the Basalt-Old Snowmass Trail which from the town of Basalt takes you to Snowmass Creek Road where you can explore all of Old Snowmass. One of Basalt’s most popular hikes, the Arbaney Kittle Trail, can be found just outside of town toward Old Snowmass. This trail offers amazing views of the Elk Mountains and both the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan river valleys. Be warned though, the views | OUTD OORS hot on the trails 74 are the trail’s reward for a steep uphill climb and substantial elevation gain to the popular overlook less than two miles up. Downtown Basalt is a wonderful place to begin your adventure and learn more about its colorful past with the Historical Walking Tour. This short—less than a mile—path around informational markers follows bear paw prints on the sidewalk linking diverse points of interest. You’ll discover Aspen Junction’s railroad past, restored buildings and original charcoal kilns. There is a charm around this river town and Basalt has many different bridges to take in the amazing views of both the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan rivers. A couple of spots not to miss are the Emma Bridge (a once popular traffic bridge turned into a pedestrian crossing with a pocket–park feel), Swinging Bridge (where the original wagon road crossed into the town), and Pueblo Bridge (once a wooden bridge serving the tent town of Fryingpan Junction). Downtown Basalt has many wonderful parks to enjoy as well. As you enter downtown from “up valley,” Confluence Park can be found just on the other side of the Emma Bridge. This is a wonderful spot to sit, relax and watch the two rivers merge as the Fryingpan River flows into the Roaring Fork River. Families will particularly enjoy Arbaney Park with plenty of open room to run, swing and play surrounded by the mountains and rich with the town’s history. A smaller unique spot for kids can be found just above downtown at Cliff’s Hillside Park. This wooden playground sits on top of a hill, with views of the mountains in one of Basalt’s unique neighborhoods. If you are looking for a little more seclusion, an easy place to escape to is Lake Christine. This small body of water isn’t for boating, but you’ll find fishing, easy hiking, and a peaceful picnic area. Lake Christine is a wonderful spot to sit and watch for wildlife around this beautiful wetland area. Lake Christine is also the popular entrance to the Basalt State Wildlife Area. With over 4,800 acres protected for wildlife, this is one of Walk in any direction in Basalt, and you’ll find a tree decorated in holiday lights, framing the front of a building, or shading a window-scape. But did you know that Basalt is formally designated an arboretum? In fact, it is one of only four towns in the world to be accredited by ArbNet, a collaborative, international community of arboreta. “Not many towns or cities become accredited as an arboretum,” says Sue Paist, ArbNet Coordinator. Most arboreta are parks, tree-focused gardens, nature reserves, zoos, or college campuses. Only four out of more than 100 accredited arboreta are towns or villages. The other three are located in Iowa, Illinois and Rhode Island, though the register shows more traditional designations in such far-off places as Ethiopia, Australia and China. Contained within the Town’s parks, open space and rights of way, the Basalt Midland Arboretum has catalogued 168 species of trees and shrubs. The Town’s horticulture and forestry staff is dedicated to the practice of sustainable land stewardship and promoting ecological conservation principals in managing the town’s 90 gardens and more than 3,000 deciduous trees and conifers. With an elevation of 6,624 feet and semi-arid climate, mountain towns must work hard to create and maintain desirable, thriving and water-wise landscapes that provide an extended season of bloom. Each year, the Town celebrates Arbor Day, usually on the third Friday of April. Join us then and share our pride in the Basalt Midland Arboretum. A once-busy vehicular route crossing the river near downtown, the bridge was closed to traffic in 1997 due to numerous structural issues. It remained an essential pedestrian and bicycle link in the recreation corridor, but over time the concrete decking developed sizable holes, the railings deteriorated and the area became unsightly. The Emma Bridge Revitalization project began when citizens and local business people joined together to improve the visual aesthetics and utility of the old bridge. A new bridge was not financially feasible, so the “Friends of Emma Bridge” began to explore potential upgrades to the structure. The Town of Basalt, Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers (RFOV), Creative Nature Landscaping, and Connect One Design Project joined in the planning process, solidified a design for the structure and planters, secured funding and held a volunteer workday to engage the community. To bring the bridge up to current standards, Rifle Corrections Center | OUTD OORS the emma bridge park 76 (RCC) workers manually removed sections of steel railing and inlaid a new three-inch steel mesh on the exterior rail frame. All steel and metal parts were either repurposed on the bridge itself or recycled. The collaborative planning team and community volunteers then set their collective talents toward the aesthetic improvements, including four landscape planters with corrugated metal siding and wood alternative decking. Meanwhile, an RFOV youth coordinator engaged young volunteers in various activities, including an impromptu relay race with wheelbarrows full of a soil compost mix that was passed to the adults and from there into the planters. The kids then planted hundreds of trees alongside equal numbers of low-water, highyield perennials. More than 60 adults and 20 youngsters participated, making The Emma Bridge Revitalization project one of RFOV’s best-attended projects. Boy scouts from Troop 242 also pitched in, painting railings and building benches for the bridge deck. The total volunteer contribution and RCC’s seven workers was valued at $16,522. But the small town staff and citizens didn’t stop there. Later in the year, the Town of Basalt and volunteers reunited to create a music park adjacent to the bridge and Ponderosa Park, the local food garden near the Basalt Avenue roundabout. Named Harmony Park, the site includes six sculpturally-designed and oversized outdoor percussion instruments with 9’ tall chimes, tuned drums, a bell tree and other mallet instruments. Happily, the instruments are tuned so that it’s impossible to play a wrong note. Again, volunteers stepped up to support the installation, and thanks go to the Lions Club, Boy Scouts, Parks and Open Space Committee, private donors and the Town for their vision and collaboration. This community effort highlights our town’s appreciation of the value of the arts in promoting economic and cultural vitality. “The Emma Bridge project is a prime example of how creative citizens can actively come together in a grassroots effort to make lasting improvements to their community,” said Town Manager Mike Scanlon. The ICMA “Community Sustainability Award” recognizes innovative local government programs or processes that creatively balance a community’s social, economic, environmental and cultural needs. Access the bridge today from the Basalt Avenue roundabout or the intersection of Two Rivers Road and Basalt Avenue closer to town. ADA accessible, the music park features benches, wood chips and a row of Meidiland Roses to keep children at a safe distance from the river. If you’re looking for the best of all worlds, our two-river town is a place to be! As a parent and child-care provider in Basalt for the past 23 years, I’m always on the look-out for activities for the younger members of our community. Sometimes it’s a new class at the local arts center, a lemonade stand in the center of town or bike-riding on the Rio Grande trail. Opportunities abound in Basalt for kids of all ages and interests to find their passions. For knowledge-seekers, there’s Rock Bottom Ranch where children learn sustainable living alternatives, the Basalt Regional Library packed with classes and story-telling and the historical walking tour following bear tracks through downtown. The Basalt Recreation Department offers numerous activities for all seasons including arts and crafts, tennis, archery, swimming lessons, crosscountry skiing, plus team sports such as basketball, football and soccer. Crown Mountain Park offers a large open space for youth and adult extracurricular activities like tennis, soccer, softball, BMX track, cross-country trails and running. For family-oriented yoga, karate and exercise, there are also plenty of local gyms and fitness centers. For seekers of the arts, in Downtown Basalt you’ll find the Wyly Art Center, with its myriad arts classes in a wide range of media for kids and adults, and the Yellow Canary which hosts art-based classes for the younger crowd. The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (located in the Old Brick Building on the Basalt Elementary School campus) offers dance lessons too!. There are plenty of pre-school and after-school resources for parents, including Growing Years, Blue Lake Pre-School, Solara and The Learning Curve, all of which are accredited pre-K programs; Camp Chip-a-Tooth for out-of-school time for kids 5-12 years of age; and Basalt Middle School’s Access Roaring Fork after-school program for middle school-aged kids. The Buddy Program pares up adult and high school mentors with middle and elementary school-aged kids. Farming and ranching roots run deep in our community, and for kids that means 4-H and Pony Club. In every corner of our town, families and kids will discover a rich array of arts, recreation and small town community building. Yet, in all my explorations, the most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that one of the best things about being a kid in Basalt is a walk along the trails or a trip to the river to dip their toes in the water, skip some stones and watch the clouds go by. Life for kids in Basalt is a playground just waiting to be explored! They all echoed the same sentiment that they have “businesses of relationships” and that’s what is important to them. What a great common thread. Although the businesses stock very different merchandise and cater to dramatically different clientele, what makes them excited to go to work is consistent— their clients…their family. Our mid-valley retailers go above and beyond by offering excellent selection, unique and locally-made products, varying price points and— thank goodness—great service. If you can’t find an item at Midland Clothing, Sandy may recommend that you talk to Angie at Traffic. Or if Tigger can’t help with a consignment need at Designer Consignor, she might refer you to Brenda at Heirlooms. There’s a beautiful camaraderie among these retailers to support one another in their efforts to keep clients happy and shopping in our area. All for one— what a concept! I hope you find this glimpse into our stores, and who runs them, as fun and interesting as I did! This is what will truly shape your shopping experience. Q:Tell me a favorite story about when your business opened its doors. A: Brenda at Heirlooms answered nostalgically about her early days in business. She was fortunate to wet her feet SHO PPING + LOD G ING Business owners say it all time: “my customers are like family.” But do they really mean it? Here in Basalt, the answer is a resounding YES! In fact, this may answer the centuries-old question, “What makes the Basalt area so desirable for shopping?” Okay, maybe not centuries-old, but decades at least. While percolating on this article and how it would represent our eclectic mid-valley shopping experience, it occurred to me that the pearls should come directly from the business owners themselves. What resulted was a series of interviews that proved to be more rewarding than I thought possible. To me, there’s nothing better than getting to know a person who is passionate about their business and that’s what happened with each of my interviews. Everyone started out by answering their question very thoroughly, but what flowed after was the payoff. Every one of the retailers said with little variation that their customers were like 91 AR T S + CU LTU RE | SHO PPING + LOD G ING in the consignment industry in Aspen under the tutelage of Claudette Carter in 1984. Brenda bought Heirlooms in July of 2004 and anchored herself in downtown Basalt. She made her career in consignment, has enjoyed every aspect of the business and loves this community. She recalled vividly the story of moving her business from its original location to where it resides today because it introduced her to the “heart” of Basalt and its selfless residents. Four months after purchasing Heirlooms in 2004, Brenda realized that the building where it was located would not be suitable as a long-term option, so she made the decision to move to Midland Avenue. No one loves moving, but with a team of family members she began the two-block trek. Trucks loaded with furniture and racks filled with clothing began rolling down Midland Avenue. Remarkably, friendly locals noticed her from their perches in restaurant and bar windows as she marched merchandise down Midland Avenue. They wandered out, without hesitation, to lend a hand. With that act of kindness Brenda realized that she was standing in the true “heart” of Basalt. Eleven years later that kindness continues. Q: What brings customers from surrounding towns to Basalt? Who is your shopper? A: Angie Allen of Traffic explains it’s the diversity in clothing lines she carries 92 that brings folks back time and time again. Traffic dresses an 80-yearold just as easily as a 30-year-old. Her customers are her family and she knows them like the back of her hand. Clients feel comfortable when they walk in because Angie and her staff welcome them in (usually by name), remember their tastes and make great suggestions quickly. Shoppers come from Aspen, Glenwood Springs, and even Vail, because they are assured to find something different. After more than 12 years in business, Angie has cultivated fantastic manufacturer relationships which are an essential part of her business success. They enable her to keep her floor stocked with a wide array of gorgeous clothing, shoes and acces- sories you won’t find anywhere else. Traffic carries upscale brands known for their quality, trend-forward design and sophistication. Q: What is one of your top recommendations to bring more customers into your store? A: Tracy Bennett of Midland Shoe says that it’s a huge plus that she understands the role that social media plays in building her business. After 21 years, Tracy has learned more about effective marketing by studying the new trends and honing in on what offers her clients respond to best. However, nothing will ever replace her repeat locals, word-of-mouth referrals and the consistent vacationers. Additionally, she says that the Sunday Farmers Market is a great draw. People milling around town is the “best case scenario” for her. Echoing other retailers in Basalt, Tracy sees customers as relationships walking through her door, not as dollars in her register. Although not every town event results in higher sales, she realizes that the benefit lies in folks “discovering” Midland Shoe. She merchandises in a very thorough way, touching on tastes that will satisfy everyone. One of her new marketing additions is texting about new arrivals and sales events that are happening inside the store. Anyway, she markets her business, visiting Tracy’s shop is lovely. I watched firsthand as customers came in for specific shoe brands, knowing they’d find them at Midland Shoe. She explained that a lot of artists she carries now refer her to new artists creating a sort of “co-op of referrals.” Her criteria is simple: everything must be handmade or remade, natural or organic and the artist needs to have some connection to our valley. The Basalt Emporium epitomizes “the eclectic store.” Shae carries everything from delicious confections to cars. For instance, you can find a Cindy Buck original handmade/recycled cashmere jacket or farm fresh products like honey and eggs. And there’s always a take-away! The space where Basalt Emporium now sits has had many past lives, but after being open for three years it has found its true identity. Shae’s love for her store, our community and all her customers is what Basalt is made of! Q: When you opened your doors in 1995, did you dream that the store would grow in this way? A: Don and Susan Edmonds say that after 20 years their success with Bristlecone Mountain Sports can be credited to projecting well and reinvesting everything back into their original business. They were and still are open seven days a week, always at-the-ready for their clients. Early on they decided to only expand their store in thoughtful ways which saved them from not overextending themselves as many other business do. They didn’t plan on the business growing as it did, they just expanded when the time was right and their clients’ needs demanded it. Bristlecone is absolutely the go-to store for all things outdoor. A: After 25 years as a fixture in downtown Basalt, Sandy and Veronika of Midland Clothing spoke positively about their transition to Willits Town Center. They were overjoyed that their loyal local clients willingly made the four-mile transition with them. Their excellent location with easy access and, of course, proximity to Whole Foods has blessed them with an infusion of new clientele. The traffic of neighboring businesses has created an additional boost as well. Although people are still sentimental about shopping in downtown Basalt, they love the new retail space. It enables Midland Clothing to better serve their clients because the store is laid out more effectively for everyone—women, men and children alike. The store’s high ceilings, gorgeous lighting and open floor plan mean that shoppers can easily see the merchandise they are trying to find. They love recreating in the Valley so they are passionate about all the items they stock. They appreciate their clients and their loyalty. They know they are doing well when locals bring their family members in, too. Bristlecone’s move from downtown Basalt to Willits didn’t phase their customers. They welcomed the new space and all that the Willits area has to offer. Don mentioned their upcoming 20th Anniversary in May and that they will have a celebration at that time. Look for it—I am! Q: What have the biggest changes been in midvalley shoppers over the last 15 to 20 years? A: What a warm and welcoming store. Visiting Designer Consignor is like walking into Tigger Ash’s home. It’s probably why she is so beloved in the valley. Tigger and Rhonda were the first to tell me that their business is comprised of “sweet and unique relationships” and you need to work at these relationships to be successful. Designer Consignor has been operating in the Basalt Business Center in the Southside neighborhood for 15 years. Tigger explained that the mid-valley shopper is from all over the valley. Aspenites look for diversity and unique merchandise, while Basalt folks love checking out what’s new. Everyone enjoys hunting for something unique. It’s very trendy now for people—even the ultra-wealthy—to shop at Designer Consignor. If consignment shopping is in your blood, walking into a consignment store can’t be resisted. 96 Customers that consign items feel happy about the circle of energy that consigning brings, confident that their cherished piece is going to a great home. Good furniture is like a great pair of shoes— it can last forever, and that’s the type of quality merchandise Tigger’s shop carries. It’s what her clientele expect. About her clients she shared, “People’s tastes have shifted a bit in the last decade or so. Colorado mountain decor is still tops, but contemporary furnishings are very hot!” A lot of retail furnishing stores have gone out of business in the mid-valley so shoppers are discovering Designer Consignor. Tigger also attributes some of her recent success to people’s concern for our planet. She says that consignment stores are gaining traction because humans don’t want to leave such a large carbon footprint. Whatever it is, you can feel that she’s thrilled to have you walk through her door. Q: Being the “new kid on the block,” how has the Town of Basalt welcomed you? A: Faboo’s owner, Monika Oginski, gushes that Basalt was extremely welcoming to her as she opened her chic European-style clothing store last year. People approached her to share how happy they were that she joined the business community in historic dowtown. The Basalt Chamber was incredibly supportive with a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony that “blew her away.” She felt that the town treated her like a celebrity. It gave her a “huge business energy boost!” Monika went on to say that the ribbon-cutting was a standing-room only event with Mayor Jacque Whitsitt cutting the ribbon. She feels great local support from fellow business owners and customers. She sees a team-like camaraderie between downtown businesses. Monika loves the referring of customers between local shops, saying that everyone helps feed each other’s businesses. She feels that the prices and wearablilty of her clothing lines really fit her mid-valley clientele. Her styles are made in Italy and most items are under $100. She gets such joy when her customers return. Relationships are essential.
