why perfect posture matters
Good posture is important for a
number of reasons. As a whole,
people are living more sedentary
lives than ever before, & this is
having a significant impact on our
posture & overall health. Good
posture is also key during exercise,
in order to prevent injury. Having
poor posture is not just uncomfortable, it can be the source of
major health problems & injury.
Proper posture is required to
promote overall health & reduce
the risk of injury.
What is Poor Posture?
Poor posture occurs when the
body is unbalanced, resulting in
strain on certain areas of the body
due to a lack of support. Certain
parts of the body are either
misaligned or imbalanced, which
can cause stress on other body
22 Active
parts. Consider leaning your head
forward. When your head is leaning forward, it causes your neck
to move out of proper alignment.
Instead of having your entire spine
properly supporting the weight
of your head, the weight is supported by just a few vertebrae of
the neck. This imbalance results
in extra stress due to the excess
unsupported weight, which can
lead to neck pain & tension. This
problem is common among
people who spend many hours
with their head bent forward staring at the computer screen. This
example of poor posture is something that you should definitely
try to correct in order to improve
your health & reduce pain.
What is Good Posture?
Good posture is essentially the
opposite of poor posture. It is a
state of alignment & balance of
the spine & muscles. When your
posture is good, all parts of the
body are in proper alignment &
no one part of the body has undue stress or force being exerted
on it. When you exercise good
posture, your body is essentially
performing at its most efficient
level & exerting as little effort as
possible. Having good posture
at rest & during activities is absolutely essential to maintaining
your health & preventing injury.
Analyzing Your Posture
Evaluating your posture is
something that is best left to the
experts, such as a chiropractor or
a physical trainer. It is possible to
review your posture on your own,
but an expert will be able to give
you more thorough recommendations based on the anatomy &
physiology of your body. Good
posture is difficult to measure,
mostly because our bodies do
not stay still all the time. It is
essential to consider our posture
during the wide range of activities
we are engaged in, such as sitting,
standing, & especially physical
activities. For example, consider
the injury that could be caused
by picking up a heavy object with
a poor posture.
Several Characteristics of
Good Standing Posture
Standing posture is the easiest to
measure & correct. When you
are standing, your head should
be balanced, not leaning forward
or backward to cause excess
strain. The upper spine should
have a small forward curve, & the
middle spine a small backward
curve. The lower portion of
the spine should have a small
forward curve. The hips, knees, &
ankles should all be in a neutral
position without being hyper
extended or flexed. The feet
should be placed a few inches
apart from the other foot, & the
weight of the body should be
evenly distributed on both sides.
These are just a few of the characteristics of good posture.
Learning how to exhibit good
posture is not something that
you can easily correct yourself. It
will take time & effort to learn to
correct poor posture behaviors
such as slouching & tilting your
head forward while sitting at
the computer. However, good
posture is absolutely essential to
maintaining your health & wellbeing. People with good posture
experience far less regular pain,
& are even less prone to many
common injuries. The benefits
of good posture are definitely
worth the time & effort it takes
to correct years of poor posture
habits.
