Dear Santa, Please send your credit card

I have just been kidnapped by a fat dude in
a red suit, shoved in a bag and taken to the
north pole and wrapped up. Who put me on
their Christmas list?
When somebody falls down, I wait to
see if they are okay before I laugh.
I just turned 35, may have osteoarthritis in
a few fingers, and have recently used the
phrase, “Because I said so!” I don’t think the

What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next

other people if you insist on being stubborn. You may find that your
quick wit and charm will help you in obtaining allies. Set a limit, or you’ll
wind up on a tight budget.
Capricorn (Dec 22.- Jan. 20): Exercise your talents and present your
ideas to groups you think you can contribute to. Travel, although enticing,
will cost more than you expect. Family outings will make you feel secure
and happy. Joint ventures might prove to be unfavorable.
Aquarius (Jan. 21.- Feb. 19) Renovations or purchases made for your
home will payoff. Talk to your emotional partner about your intentions.
Keep important information to yourself. Your luckiest events this month

must be taken advantage of. Make plans to
do something special with the one you

Aries (Mar. 21- April 20): Don’t let
others restrict you from saying how you

Taurus (Apr. 21- May 21): Your ideas are good and career moves can be

way of your progress this month. Real estate investments will payoff. Your

Bam Margera
Born Brandon Cole Margera, Bam Margera is a
multi-faceted public figure.
A skateboarder, radio and
TV personality, writer and
director, there isn’t much
Bam hasn’t done.
Born on Sept. 28, 1979 in
West Chester, Pa., he was
nicknamed “Bam” by his
grandfather because at
the age of three he had a
tendency to run into walls
(a tendency that has stuck
with him throughout his
life).
He dropped out of hgh
school when his best friend
was expelled for smearing
feces on a locker. He did go
on to receive his GED.
After an unsuccessful marriage to Jenn Rivell, he mar18 Active
ried his childhood friend
Melissa “Missy” Rothstein
on Feb. 3, 2007. They currently live in “Castle Bam”
in West Chester (a huge
gothic house, with a skate
park in the driveway, on 14
acres of land).
Bam began filming himself
and his friends skateboarding and doing stunts
and released a compilation of his work as “CKY:
Landspeed” in 1999 (CKY
stands for “Camp Kill
Yourself”). These early
videos feature many of
Margera’s friends: Ryan
Dunn, Brandon DiCamillo,
Rake Yohn, Chris Raab,
and Brandon Novak.
These videos are what led
to Bam Margera being a
staple of MTV’s “Jackass”.
“Haggard”, which features
a cameo by professional
skateboarder Tony Hawk.
He also co-starred in both
“Jackass” movies alongside
Johnny Knoxville. MTV
also gave him the show
“Bam’s Unholy Union”,
which followed he and
Rothstein before they got
married.
After he claimed fame
as a “Jackass”, MTV gave
Margera his own show
“Viva La Bam.” The show
followed Margera and
friends as they performed
crazy stunts in West
Chester, New Orleans, LA,
Brazil, Finland, Mexico,
Amsterdam, and Transylvania. Margera co-wrote,
directed, and starred in
the independent film
He is the main character
in “Tony Hawk’s Underground”, (one of the best
selling video sports game
of all time). He is sponsored by leaders in the
skating industry; the most
influential being Element
Skateboards.
You can listen to Bam every week on Sirius Satelite
Radio for his show Radio
Bam, which features Margera along with the Jackass
and CKY crews.
Catch him in Jacksonville
on Dec. 7 for a meet and

night at Club Aqua.

Holiday
Food Choices
Every year it has become common practice
to overindulge around the holidays. It is
expected to gather with friends and family
over lavish meals that include home cooked
dishes stuffed with fats and sugars. Many
people gain five to ten pounds between
Thanksgiving and New Years, and simply
make a resolution to shed the extra pounds.
The problem with this plan is that it’s much
easier to put on the pounds than it is to
lose them. A more effective strategy is to
enjoy your holiday while making better
holiday food choices.

Fattening Dishes in Moderation
22 Active
The key to making healthy food choices
this holiday season is to recognize the foods
that have higher fat and sugar content. This
does not mean that you have to abstain
completely from your favorite traditional
foods, but simply reduce your portion
sizes. You can reduce your caloric intake
dramatically by removing the skin from your
turkey, using less gravy, or cutting back on
high-sugar desserts.
Healthy Holiday Food
Substitutions
Avoiding unhealthy foods becomes easier
when you realize how many tasty healthy
holiday food options there are to choose
from. When settling on a nutritious holiday
menu this year, you can make a large
difference by making choices such as:
•Turkey instead of ham – Reduce fat
and calories even further by removing skin
from the turkey.
menu, dark chocolate is the healthiest
choice. Dark chocolates are packed with
antioxidants and other nutrients that can
actually provide protection for your body.
To add a bit more sweetness to your dark
chocolate, you can melt it over strawberries.
•More Fruits and Vegetables –
Instead of fattening finger foods, enjoy
cranberries, blueberries, vegetable plates,
and other fresh fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables can add variety and
nutrition to your holiday parties and are
easy and simple to prepare. By making
healthier appetizer choices, you can still
splurge and enjoy a slightly more indulgent
main course or dessert without having your
calorie intake for the day skyrocket.

During the main course, you can also
make better side dish choices by replacing
mashed potatoes with a baked sweet
potato or replacing macaroni and cheese
with a green bean casserole, or replacing
pecan pie or cheesecake with apple or
pumpkin pie.
Stay Active
The bottom line is that during the
holidays, you are likely going to be taking
in more calories than normal. Therefore,
it is increasingly important to boost your
activity level and burn more calories as
well. This will not only be great for your
health and reduce your weight gain, but it
will also keep you feeling more energetic
and upbeat as you enjoy your holiday
season.

ACTIVE Q&A
Art Alexakis of
EVeRCLeAR
ACTIVE: What’s EVERCLEAR been up to? EVERCLEAR: We put a new
album out in June 2012 and have been touring since. We spent much of
the summer of 2012 co-headlining the innovative and highly-successful
Summerland tour, along with four other notable American bands that
emerged during the 90’s, Sugar Ray, the Gin Blossoms, Lit and Marcy’s
Playground.
Everclear is: Art Alexakis,
vocal, guitars; Dave French,
guitars; Josh Crawley,
keyboards; Freddy Herrera,
bass; Sean Winchester, drums
ACTIVE: Is this your first time to Jacksonville? EVERCLEAR: A little while back I did
a solo show, but it gets a little blurry with
the amount of shows we do a year. I would
say it’s been maybe 3-4 years. We love
Jacksonville.
ACTIVE: On tour what city has been the most fun? EVERCLEAR: I’m
sober; I don’t drink or do drugs. We all have families and wives, so for fun
it’s getting out to all the different regions and seeing the different things
there are. We LOVE TO EAT! It’s cool to see all the different types of
BBQ’S there are. My mom is from the South and I love it! I will tear some
Cracker Barrel up! I would have to say this tour that Juliet in Chicago has
been the best. The show was awesome.
ACTIVE: Out of all your songs which are you most proud of? EVERCLEAR: It’s really hard to pick one. I would definitely say Wonderful. I’m
really happy with our new album; it was from the heart and soul! Jackie
Robinson and Santa Ana Wind were songs I was really happy with also.
ACTIVE: Art with songs like Wonderful and Father of Mine do fans still
come up and tell you how these songs have changed their lives and
26 Active
related to their own story? EVERCLEAR: Every day. Every single day. I am
very fortunate to be a part of lives!
ACTIVE: Of all the years of touring and playing shows what is the
craziest memory? EVERCLEAR: It’s like going to a record store and not
remembering what record you wanted. One that was crazy though, a guy
came to a meet and greet and after standing in line to meet me he was
like, “I’m your cousin.” I sat with him after and had coffee and he went on
to tell me people we were related to. It was crazy.
ACTIVE: Christmas is around the corner. How will Everclear get into
the holiday cheer? EVERCLEAR: Every year we go to Hawaii, fly all of our
families out and play a show at a Children’s Cancer Hospital. We are family guys, so we love to spend family time, while doing something good.
ACTIVE: Where can everyone go to stay Active with Everclear? EVERCLEAR: We are all about social media! Follow us at: Twitter: @EverclearBand; facebook.com/everclear or our website: everclearonline.com.

ACTIVE Q&A
Dennis Casey of
Flogging Mollyl
By Alyse Easdale
ACTIVE: First of all, thank you for taking the time to talk with me.
Where are you calling from? Dennis Casey: I’m in Long Island, New York
right now. I live here. We’re on a break and we’re going to head down to
Florida next weekend.
ACTIVE: Jacksonville’s New Rock Alternative station X1029 announced
on October 4th that Flogging Molly was the final addition to their annual winter music festival, The Big Ticket. How did that come to fruition?
DC: Our manager and our booking agent got us the show there. Who
else is playing?
ACTIVE: Rise Against is the headliner. There’s also Bush, Anberlin, fun.,
Silversun Pickups, The Joy Formidable, Of Monsters and Men, twenty |
one | pilots, Grouplove, Imagine Dragons, and Paper Tongues. There’s
enough to where they have two stages going and they also have a stage
for local bands. Local bands here in Jacksonville have been competing
for the past few months to play on that stage. DC: Oh cool. Well that’s
pretty good company. Rise Against are good friends of ours. We’ve
toured with them in Canada and the U.S. so that’s another good reason
to do it. We get to see our friends again.
ACTIVE: I’ve never seen you guys in concert before, but I’ve heard that
your live shows are legendary. What aspect of your performance do you
think has contributed most to you earning that reputation? What do you
feel makes Flogging Molly stand out versus any other band? DC: Wow.
Well, we’re always playing live and I think the band came together and
sort of grew into its own groove playing live. We love what we do; that’s a
cliché. We really get into it and it’s really high-energy music that I think is
30 Active
ly
what gives us what
people see that our
live shows are what
they are. We play
folk music and just
rev it up and turn
the volume up and
just let it rip. I think
that contributes to the effectiveness of the way the music relates and
goes over to people, and then they start reacting and then you start reacting to what they’re doing so I think it’s one of those cycles. Our music
is very roots-oriented, very natural, and I think traditional Irish music was
written around people dancing and having a good time singing along
and I think when you turn up the volume and speed it up – I mean, we
play pretty fast live as well – I think people can’t help but get swept away
with it.
ACTIVE: When it comes to concerts, do you prefer performing in small,
intimate venues or large arenas and festivals? Why? DC: I get asked that
often and it’s hard to pick between the two experiences because they’re
so different but they’re also equally rewarding, but in different ways.
I would say when you play a smaller show you have the intimacy of
practically seeing everybody’s face and they’re right there. There are no
barricades, people jump onstage sometimes, and it’s just that old-school
way of playing shows. But then again when you jump onstage and there’s
twenty thousand people, there’s not much that can compare to that sort
of rush or that sort of high or energy that you feel and to hear that many
people and to see it is very, very… How can I put it? It just pumps you up
like crazy and it always humbles me and makes very grateful for what I’m
Active 31
ACTIVE: How long has the band been touring in support of its latest
record Speed of Darkness? DC: About a year and a half.
ACTIVE: Since that was released in May of last year, I don’t believe
there’s anything I can ask that hasn’t already been asked before. Therefore, I pose the question to you: is there anything you can say about
the Speed of Darkness that your fans may not know? DC: I think I’m
going to agree with you – it’s hard to really add more to the record.
But I do think it is a very good picture of the band, of where we’re at
in our lives, and of where we’re at in our musical journey or career. I’m
right in the middle of it so it’s hard for me to step back and have any
kind of real perspective that maybe a fan would. I think it captures us
at where we’re at right now and I think the band has played better than
ever. It also is, for me personally, a very proud achievement because of
what it speaks about and what it says. The songs are really deep and
I think they will forever be a soundtrack to what has been happening
to America and to the world in the last few years since the collapse
of the economy and the recession. I think it’s definitely a picture or
soundtrack of that time in history and we’re not out of it yet so I think
it’s still very relevant. I would hope that some years from now, people
will look back at that and really have a sense of time and what it was
about, and I hope it lasts in people’s minds and hearts just like a classic
record would.
ACTIVE: What was the reasoning behind founding your own label?
Also, why the departure with SideOneDummy? DC: Well, you kind of
answered some of it. (laughs) The music industry is changing. We’ve
been doing this for over ten years with SideOne and I think we’ve put
five records out with them. We worked hard with them, we all built our
careers together… As time went on, I think we just thought, “Why not
try to do this ourselves and see what will happen?” [It’d] give us complete freedom, complete control over everything – not that SideOne
ever took any control away from us. And we wanted to maybe sign
other bands that we believed in, that we thought needed a shot and
could use a hand with their careers, so we decided, “Let’s try to start
32 Active
our own label.”
ACTIVE: Going back to the subject of touring, Flogging Molly just
announced dates for its ninth annual “Green 17” tour, which almost
serves as a countdown to St. Patrick’s Day. Has this become sort of a
tradition for the band? DC: That was us being asked and pleaded with
every year, “Play my city, play this city on St. Patrick’s Day.” We can only
do so much and play in so many places in one day and we thought,
“Why not build a tour around it and make it one big, long St. Patrick’s
Day?” Nothing really changes for the band in the sense of what we do.
We just do the same thing every tour, every show. It was basically us
wanting to celebrate that whole holiday as much as we could and that’s
why we initially started out with seventeen cities and that’s how it got
its name. So we did it and it was a big success so that’s why every year
we keep doing it again. It’s just one of the best things we do touringwise. It’s a great way to give our fans sort of what they want that time
of year.
ACTIVE: I understand that Celtic instruments are part of the band’s
sound and perhaps that’s where the idea of this annual “Green 17” tour
came from, because of Irish heritage. Are all of the band members of
Flogging Molly from Ireland? ACTIVE: No, just Dave, our singer, is. The
rest of us are from the U.S.
ACTIVE: I sincerely thank you for your time. Is there anything you’d
like to add? DC: It’s all about us and our fans and tearing down that
wall of separation and having this connection with them that’s real
and strong and something that’s authentic. We do whatever we can to
show that and express that, and I think that that is what our band is all
about and will continue to be about. We’re blessed and lucky to have
such a great fan base. There’s a certain amount of gratitude that goes
to certain places that embraces you right off the bat, and Florida is one
of them.

Reunited and re-energized, the band
has returned with album Speak In Code
eight years after parting ways in 2004.
Members of Eve 6 weren’t even legal drinking age when they were presented with their first platinum record. Thus, life came hard and fast at the
members of SoCal pop-punk trio, whose meteoric success in the late ‘90s
and early millennium ingrained their anthemic radio hits into the fabric of
the lives of a whole generation. Then, it all sort of ended…until now.
As the fourth full-length release for Eve 6 and their debut on new label
Fearless Records, the album heralds not just a return to form for the
threesome, but a new chapter in a book that had ended all too abruptly.
“Overall I’m really proud of it, and I think we’re doing right by our fans,
who’ve waited a long time for us to make another record. I think we’re
giving them something they’ll enjoy,” says singer/bassist Max Collins.
“Once we got in the studio there was a lot of energy. There aren’t any
filler moments; each song has its purpose. This is the strongest collection
of songs we’ve ever had on one record.”
Eve 6—which also includes drummer Tony Fagenson and guitarist Jon
Siebels—formed in Southern California in 1995 while the trio were just
teenagers, then inked a deal with RCA Records before they’d finished
high school. The band issued the self-titled Eve 6 in 1998, attaining
platinum success with hit singles “Inside Out” and “Leech,” the former
capturing the #1 spot on the Modern Rock charts and crossing over
successfully to Top 40 radio. More widespread recognition came with
gold-selling sophomore effort Horrorscope (2000), which spawned radio
gems “Promise,” “On The Roof Again” and the ubiquitous prom and MTV
anthem “Here’s To The Night”.
It seemed like Eve 6 were everywhere—the band made appearances on
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman,
Active 51
Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, and TRL with Carson Daly, with their videos in constant rotation on MTV. The band then
released the more experimental It’s All In Your Head in 2003, featuring
singles “Think Twice” and “At Least We’re Dreaming,” but parted ways
with RCA thereafter. Their rapid rise to prominence at an early age had
led to an inevitable mental and physical exhaustion, and in 2004 Eve 6
announced an indefinite hiatus. It was time to turn a new page.
“There were parts
which were fucking
incredible, and amazing and awesome,
and there were
aspects that were
terrifying and freaky
that you don’t know
how to handle. I feel
like we did some
growing up in public,” says Collins. “I needed to stop drinking. In order to
do that, the wheels had to come off. I don’t think I could have done it if the
band was still going.”
After a year apart, Collins and Fagenson began writing and producing
for other artists, including 2007’s hit ballad “We Don’t Have To Look
Back Now” for rock band Puddle of Mudd, and collaborating on a new
experimental side project, the Sugi Tap. “It was an inspiring time, going
down different musical avenues together and trying things we wouldn’t
have in Eve 6,” reflects Fagenson. “Ironically, when we did reform Eve 6 a
couple years later, those experiments allowed us to progress the sound of
the band more freely than if we had been in the band the whole time.”
52 Active
Collins and Fagenson eventually reignited Eve 6 in 2008, with guitarist Matt Bair temporarily replacing Siebels who was occupied with his
project Monsters Are Waiting. The band spent the next two-plus years
touring, writing and reconnecting with fans, then in 2011, armed with
new material and management, signed with Fearless Records. A month
within inking the deal Collins and
Fagenson finally convinced Siebels to
return to the fold.
“After going down some different
paths it hit me that there was this
thing out there that people wanted
and wanted to hear,” explains Siebels.
“It just clicked and made sense to me.
After such a long break I was so happy
to be playing with these guys again.” Continues Fagenson, “The way
[Siebels] hits the strings and puts that muscle into the chords is very
distinctive to our band, and that was a welcome piece of the sound
that we had missed. Songs that had been kicking around for a couple
years got new life with his playing put into them.”
Eve 6 then re-enlisted Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Dashboard Confessional, Good Charlotte, Pearl Jam)—who produced the first two Eve
6 full-lengths—to helm the sessions for Speak In Code. With all the
lead time, the album contains a mix of compositions that began as far
back as the side project, as well as recent works written in the months
leading up to the recording process. “We were really taking a ‘best of
everything’ sort of approach, almost like a band’s first album, in which
there’s a lot of material to choose from,” Fagenson notes. “About half
Active 53
came with the inspiration of Jon’s return and all that was happening to
us at the time. We have a unique process, where each song is sort of its
own animal. Don was crucial in helping us tighten everything up, and
inspiring Max to dig really deep lyrically and get to some root emotion
down there.” Explains Collins, “Neil Finn [of Crowded House] once
said, ‘A great producer is someone whom you admire musically and
otherwise, who you feel compelled to show up and show off for.’ I feel
like Don is that figure for me and the band.”
In many ways, Speak In Code is a work with deep personal significance for Collins, who has weathered his share of personal adversity.
The album is a testament to coming out okay on the other side, with
friendships still intact, but it’s within the journey that the story truly
lies. Whether it’s romantic relationships or dealings with his bandmates,
communication—and its barriers—is a central theme underpinning
the release.
“In some of the songs frustration is a theme. I was sort of looking at
difficult personal relationships with a humorous spin in some places,
and with more earnestness in others,” explains Collins. “The title [Speak
In Code] is a lyric from ‘Curtain,’ and there was something kind of
evocative about it. In that song, I’m referring to being newly sober and
just feeling like an open nerve, feeling freaked out, having people and
life being sort of overwhelming. It’s almost like people are speaking a
language you don’t understand.”
First single “Victoria” lyrically weaves a tale that draws the listener into
a hook-laden, 80‘s-influenced anthem, putting a contemporary spin
on the classic Eve 6 sound. “[‘Victoria’] indulges this paranoid what-if
fantasy that kind of has a foot in the truth: My wife went on this girls’
vacation to Mexico, and when I was looking through the photos, I saw
my imagination start to go, and wrote that song,” Collins recalls. “I’m
convinced in my mind that something’s going on that really isn’t.”

“In a lot of ways, the years leading up to this album release was a bit of
a ‘paying our dues’ situation. We certainly had to earn the right to have
this opportunity again,” says Fagenson. “This time around I think we
realized just how hard it is to really get a rock band going and just when
you think you’re near the finish line you realize there’s another hundred
miles to go. But all that work and time simply strengthened our belief
in what we were doing, and it was a crucial aspect of our development.
It really taught us about stick-with-it-ness and perseverance.”
“The time we spent apart really made us appreciate what we have in
each other. It’s a chemistry you can’t manufacture,” adds Collins. “We
literally grew up playing music together. The bond that we have as a
result of so much shared experience infuses the sound of the band.”
In support of Speak In Code, Eve 6 recently took to the road with The
All-American Rejects and will now be embarking on a fall tour with
Everclear. Diehards who caught the band live in prior years will undoubtedly be thrilled to see the trio once again on stage, but it will be a
somewhat older, definitely wiser group that greets them. According to
Collins, it’s all good.
“We’re looking forward to playing new songs, and reconnecting to the
fans with new material,” says Collins. “I feel this profound gratitude to
the other two guys in my band. We’ve been through a lot—we’ve had
the mountaintop moments and the Death Valley moments—and we’re
still here today, we all get along, and we made this thing together. It’s
almost miraculous, to me. There’s this convergence that goes on for
something that’s bigger than the sum of its parts, and that’s such a joyful, cool fucking thing.”

Awesome show! It was very packed with a bunch of loyal fans.
ACTIVE: Have you ever been to Jacksonville ,Florida?
MC: Yeah we have. Can’t remember it was so long ago, on our 3rd

seven years.
ACTIVE: Everyone is excited for this awesome concert with you

MC: We have been fans for a long time. To hear them live now, and
perform with them is even more awesome!
ACTIVE: So we know you got the new album Speak in Code. How
was making this album different from any other album you have ever

MC: This time we are older and have more experience with song
writing, and life in general. It was a combination of older songs and
writing in a studio.

ACTIVE: We have to say the video for Curtain was pretty awesome! It
must have taken time to film that and was a lot of fun.
MC: It was a lot of fun. The concept though was impossible. It had a
lot of words, rapidly, and the take aspect had no room for error. We
thought it was impossible until we actually did it. There was so much
preparation.
ACTIVE: How was the song Curtain put together?
MC: That chorus was with a different verse. We sent it to our producer,
and it ended up changing the song. He helped us a lot with the changing.
ACTIVE: What is your all time memory for Eve 6?
MC: Going over seas to play for all the troops. It was amazing! It felt so
good! We appreciate everything they do! I will also never forget hearing
our song for the first time on the radio.

Standing in the back of the
“media lounge” (a euphemism for the eating room)
behind the Norm Carlson
Press Box at Florida Field
two years ago, Will Muschamp was introduced to
the Gator Nation as their
next head football coach.
The anticipation was thick
and exciting. Muschamp
had been the “coach in
waiting” at Texas and was
long considered the next

he took his first assistants

was intense and demanding. He wanted to win,

and as an assistant under

Mack Brown. Gator fans
seemed to be anxious to
move on from the Urban
Meyer era as well. Meyer
won, but did it ungraciously and he never embraced
being a “Gator.” The fact
that he quit the year before
only to be talked out of
it seemed to wring any
enthusiasm out of his final
season. The media was
upbeat about the Muschamp hiring as well. After
years of Steve Spurrier’s
entertaining relationship
with those covering Gator
football, Ron Zook was fine
but no fun and Meyer was
so condescending and imperial that the scribes and
radio/tv types were ready
for him to leave town.
Florida athletics has
always had a difficult relationship with the media
in general. For years the
football program underperformed and was always
considered a “sleeping
giant” in Bear Bryant’s
words. It gave those close
to the program a little bit
of a complex. Saying the
program was under more
scrutiny than any other
because of the number
of newspapers, radio and
TV stations, access was
fairly limited. While a bit
of hyperbole, there’s no
question that interest in
Florida football was (and
is) high in all four corners
of the state.
Muschamp was introduced and took the podium as the young, energet-
ic up and coming coach
that he was. Fans wanted
to embrace him. Heck,
the media wanted to like
him. (On a side note, covering a big-time college
football team is different
than covering just about
anything else. Most of
the “reporters” are either
school graduates or fans.
Mostly young and eager,
sometimes coaches take
advantage of that and run
roughshod over the ones
just trying to do their job.)
So as Muschamp began
his nearly 19 minute
opening statement (the
joke was he didn’t take
a breath) we heard a
lot of the high-minded,
motivational things that
made him the premier
candidate for a big college
football job. Then he

here, we’re going to do it
our way.” What? It was
such an upbeat occasion
that it didn’t quite register that Muschamp was
outlining his idea of what
the media’s role would be
surrounding his program.
He was throwing down
the hackneyed gauntlet
that they were the team
and you’re not. OK, no
problem. It’s not going to

There’s no question
there’s a learning curve
for assistants who are
elevated to the top job in
that environment. And
give Muschamp credit for
adapting a bit, creating a
laugh or two during the
season and starting to sort
out how this coach/media
relationship works. That’s
why it was almost amusing when after a big win
over FSU and the conclusion of a fantastic one-loss
season nobody outside of
Ben Hill Griffin Stadium
expected, Muschamp
said, “We didn’t prepare
any differently. I know it
disappoints you all but we
didn’t put this one on the
mantle and stare at it for
364 days.” What? Disappoints us? I don’t know of
any vendetta somebody
has for the Gators head
coach. Maybe he uses
some imaginary slight or
perception of what people
think he’s doing as motivation. A lot of people do
that to fuel their intensity.
Muschamp’s intensity is
already legendary. His
ability to transform
Florida into a contender
in one year will be studied
by other coaches looking
for his secret. He’s a fabulous coach, no question.
A bit of work on his public
persona and “legendary”
is probably in his future.
