ProRodeo Awards
PRCA AWARDS A longtime PRCA couple, stock contractor Art Alsbaugh and rodeo secretary Linda Alsbaugh, won the second annual Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award for contract personnel. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Greg Westfall 2012 Pendleton Whisky Let ’er Buck Stock of the Year Awards Each year, the top ProRodeo cowboys in each roughstock event vote for the top bucking horses and bulls – the animal athletes with whom they contend in the arena and whose performance is worth half their own scores. Ballots go out every Sept. 1, and the winning animals are acclaimed at the PRCA’s annual awards banquet each December just before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Stock contractors are proud of these top buckers. They invest heavily in purchases and/or breeding programs, feed and medical care for their bucking stock for years, fostering the animals’ growth and development until they are ready to be tested in the arena for the bucking instinct and physical abilities that may make them champions in their own right. In 2010, Pendleton Whisky expanded its ProRodeo involvement by sponsoring the stock awards, which are now known as the Pendleton Whisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards. Pendleton Whisky provides cash prizes for the top three animals in each event and funds the stipends for stock contractors who provide bucking stock for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He later sold the horse to Pete Carr, who first took the animal to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 2010. She returned to ProRodeo’s finale in 2011 and 2012. “Part of the reason I sold her to Pete is that I knew she’d have a good shot to go to the Finals,” Stevenson said. “I bought her from Jim Zinser as a brood mare, but she bucked so good, I didn’t want to waste her sitting at my house. I wanted her to have a chance.” In the six times she performed in Las Vegas, she guided cowboys to three goround titles: Kelly Timberman (88 points in the 10th round, 2010), Ryan Gray (90 points in the fifth round, 2011, above) and Kaycee Field (87 points in the 10th round, 2011). MGM Deuces Night’s promise – top bucking horses often have 20-year careers in the arena and more years as brood mares – was cut short in February 2013 when she developed colic after a successful medical procedure; she passed away at a veterinary hospital in Elgin, Texas. Stock of the Year Best saddle bronc 2012 PRCA ProRodeo photo by Mike Copeman Chuckulator Sutton Rodeos Chuckulator might want you to know: he’s not just a pretty face. He’s not just a big bucker, either – and he’s not just a stud horse on the Sutton Rodeos ranch. He’s all of that and more, and two-time World Champion Taos Muncy will be the first to tell you so. “That’s a real intimidating horse,” says Muncy. “I’ve watched him, and a lot of guys don’t make it very far – he bucks them off by the end of the chute gate. He had a little weaker trip that one time (Muncy’s 88-point ride at the 2011 Wrangler NFR), and I’m thankful for that. A lot of studs are hit or miss, but Chuckulator always, always bucks. And he’s real honest; he doesn’t have many moves, but he really jumps and kicks hard – exactly what you want in a bronc. You don’t ever have to pretend he’s a rank horse – he’s got the whole package.” Best bucking bull 2012 PRCA ProRodeo photo by Greg Westfall Cat Ballou 4L & Diamond S Rodeo 2013 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE PRCA AWARDS If you can ride him, you can win on him – but you’d better hope you draw him in April. In 34 outs over 2011-12, Cat Ballou allowed only two riders to make the eight-second buzzer: Bobby Welsh at Laughlin, Nev., in April 2011 and Corey Rickard at Cave Creek, Ariz., in April 2012. Welsh says he was a little hesitant when he saw what he’d drawn because of the bull’s reputation for sheer power, and he got what he expected. “He went out two jumps and sucked back to the right, like he usually does, and then he got stronger and stronger,” recalls Welsh. “But I stayed on the front end and a little inside of his spin, and got in time with him while his front end was going up and down. I found the sweet spot on him about five seconds in, and after that, it was one of the most fun bull rides I’ve ever had.” Cat Ballou is the second consecutive 4L & Diamond S Rodeo bull to win the Bull of the Year title. 525 Stock of the Year, 1956-2012 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 From 1956-73, only one top bucking horse was named each year. In 2012, the Remuda Award for stock contracting went to Frontier Rodeo, founded by partners Jerry Nelson and Jim Crowther in 2004. In the eight years following (2005-12), they sent 105 animals to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – 25 bareback horses, 38 saddle broncs and 42 bulls. In 2012 alone, they sent 18 – second only to Classic Pro Rodeo. The 2012 Remuda Award for the committee that assembled the best pens of bucking horses went to the Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede. 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Stace Smith (stock contractor) Stace Smith (stock contractor) Keith Martin and the San Antonio Stock Sale and Rodeo Bud Kerby (stock contractor) Keith Martin and the San Antonio Stock Sale and Rodeo Beutler & Son Rodeo (stock contractor) RodeoHouston (event) John Growney (stock contractor) Kitsap County Fair and Stampede, Bremerton, Wash. Nelson’s company, Frontier Rodeo, owns Full Baggage, the 2011 Bareback Horse of the Year and the 2012 Top Bareback Horse of the Wrangler NFR. 528 The Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede was presented the 2012 Remuda Award for bringing the deepest field of top bucking horses to that rodeo. The 2012 Ponoka Stampede pen included standouts from Calgary Stampede, Wayne Vold Rodeo, Kesler Rodeo, Kesler Championship Rodeo, Franklin Rodeo, Harvey Northcott Rodeo and Outlawbuckers Rodeo. PRORODEO AWARDS 2012 AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year Timed-event contestants will tell you that they are only as good as their horses enable them to be. Horses that collected the American Quarter Horse of the Year Award in 2012 performed consistently all year and put their riders in position to win – literally. Two were repeat winners: team roping (heeling) horse Cave Man won in 2010, and tie-down roping horse Sweetness won his third consecutive award. No other tie-down roping horse has ever won the award two consecutive years, much less three – and only nine other horses in other events have won three consecutive years: steer wrestling horse Zan, team roping (heading) horses Walt and Scooter (the latter did it twice), team roping (heeling) horses Diesel and Roany, steer roping horses Jeremiah and Dutch, and barrel racing horse Scamper. Barrel racing horse Bozo won five consecutive years. The 2012 AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year Awards went to: Steer wrestling 1. Dillons Dash “Dillon,” owned by Shepperson Ranch, ridden by Les Shepperson and Luke Branquinho 2. Speedy Faila “Two Guns,” owned by Wade Sumpter and Chris Morrow, ridden by Wade Sumpter, Billy Bugenig and Seth Brockman 3. White Hot Ike “Bullseye,” owned and ridden by Chance Kelton 2. Olee Roberto “Major,” owned by Thomas Snedecor, ridden by Scott Snedecor 3. Tonk Champ “Champ,” owned and ridden by Chris Glover PRCA ProRodeo photo by Kerri Allardyce Dillon was a first-time winner at age 20, but owner Les Shepperson describes his maturity as one of his best assets. “He’s one of the easiest horses ever to ride. If you break the barrier or miss the start, it’s your own fault, because Dillon’s so dependable in the box. He feels like he’s going to fall asleep in there sometimes, but he fires every time when you pull the trigger,” Shepperson says. “He feels as good as the day I bought him from (15-time NFR qualifier) Rod Lyman. He knows how to take care of himself when we’re traveling. He’s got a real gentle personality, and nothing bothers him unless he gets split up from my hazing horse, Bugs. That’s Dillon’s buddy, and he doesn’t like it if he can’t see Bugs all the time.” 2013 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE 529 PRCA AWARDS Steer Wrestling AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year (continued) Tie-down Roping PRCA ProRodeo photo by Mike Copeman In 2011, Sweetness became the first tie-down roping horse to win consecutive AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year titles, and in 2012, he became the only horse to earn the honor more than twice. His primary rider, Clint Cooper, says he’s a pleasure to be around. “At home, I just open his stall door in the morning and let him have the run of the place. It doesn’t matter if there are studs or mares around; he wanders around the ranch and grazes all day. Then at 6 o’clock every night, he walks back in his stall and waits for his hay and grain,” says Cooper. “He’s real laid back all the time, until it’s time for him to do his job. Then he’s got his game face on every time, no matter who’s riding him.” Team Roping (heading) Team Roping (heeling) 530 PRCA ProRodeo photo by Mike Copeman PRCA ProRodeo photo by Molly Morrow Sic ’Em is the last among timed-event superstar Trevor Brazile’s current mounts on whom Brazile has done all the roping-horse training, and that’s led to a special bond between the two. “The difference between good horses and great horses is an element of trust. When we back in the box, we trust that horse to win big money at big rodeos. You know you can count on him in pressure situations,” says Brazile, noting that Sic ’Em has also proven trustworthy in another role – being ridden by son Treston, 5. “When we’re on the road, that’s Treston’s horse,” Brazile says. “We throw a saddle and bridle on him, and they go everywhere.” Cave Man Returns could be a movie title – or it could be the life story of this year’s heeling horse winner. Cave Man, who won his first award in 2010, is a tough character who wants respect, not warmth, from his owner and rider, Jade Corkill. “He’s all business,” says Corkill. “I try to be friends with my horses – pet them on the head and stuff – but Cave Man isn’t interested. He won’t let me touch his head unless I’m bridling him. He just wants to be saddled, roped on, and then put back in his pen. But he loves his job. I can rope 50 in a row on him as fast as possible, and if I need to follow the next one five jumps, he never hesitates. He doesn’t look to make me throw; he looks for when I want to throw.” PRORODEO AWARDS Steer Roping Photo by Greg Westfall Chance Kelton bought Bullseye for team roping, but eventually got tired of borrowing steer roping horses and decided to audition Bullseye for an additional job. “I wasn’t sure he would be good for that event, because he was kind of spooky and touchy about things – he still is – but he took to it pretty easily,” recalls Kelton. “He’s a smart horse. Even though he’s never been very gentle, my mom, Phyllis, and my son, Catch, can both head steers on him. He relaxes more and takes care of them pretty well when they ride him. Catch is 6 years old, but he started turning steers on him when he was 4. We’ve had Bullseye since he was a yearling, so I’m especially proud of him winning an award like this. Barrel Racing PRCA AWARDS Photo by Kerri Allardyce, courtesy of the WPRA After Mary Walker began training Latte for another rider, she developed a real interest in him, and her husband, 16-time NFR qualifier Byron Walker, bought him as a surprise. Latte has a definite sense of who he is and what he wants, says Walker. “If Latte wants to look at something and you’re in the way, he’ll butt you with his head so he can get a look. When he wants his rear end scratched, he’ll bump you with his rear end and pester you until you scratch it for him. But he loves his job, he’s really honest, and he’s really proud of himself when he finishes and does well. Most of the good ones are like that, I think. I feel lucky to have him.” 2013 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE 531 AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year, 1991-2012 YearEvent Nickname Name 1989TD SW TR (hd) TR (hl) SR WPRA/GB Doc’s Desperado Doc Mr. Ruby Clerk Flint’s Friend Dutch Scamper Paul Zanardi/Joe Parsons Doc Bee Quick Matt Tyler J.D. PRCA rodeos vote on the recipient of Justin’s national award for a committeeperson whose dedication represents the deeds of those thousands of volunteers. In 2012, that award went to Tom Weinman, groundskeeper for Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg. With his wife, Bonnie, Weinman also helps with ad sales for the rodeo’s program and works the timed-event end of the arena. His work is yearround – he oversees construction and maintenance during the winter and he swaths and bales hay on the Phillipsburg Rodeo Association’s 60 acres to make sure there’s enough for the rodeo’s stock contractors and contestants each year. The nomination process was open; an external selection committee chose five finalists, and PRCA contract personnel members voted among those five. The posthumous recipient of the inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award was long-time PRCA secretary Donita Barnes, wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and PRCA stock contractor Bob Barnes and mentor to uncountable thousands of contestants and other people involved with the dozens of Barnes rodeos. The PRCA renamed the award in her honor in 2012. The 2012 recipients of the Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award were Art and Linda Alsbaugh. Art Alsbaugh got his RCA card in 1965, then in 1972 went into partnership with his father, ProRodeo Hall of Fame stock contractor Walt Alsbaugh, an arrangement that lasted until 1994. He also owned his own rodeo company, Cross Triangle Rodeo, 1973-1994. He remains active in ProRodeo. His wife, Linda, is a top-notch rodeo secretary and has had her PRCA card for more than 40 years. As a couple, they are known for their tireless work, generous natures and constant willingness to help anyone they come across – and the way they welcome everyone into the rodeo world. 2011 2012 Donita Barnes Art and Linda Alsbaugh 2013 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE 539 PRCA AWARDS PRCA ProRodeo photo by Greg Westfall Art and Linda Alsbaugh, in accepting the 2012 Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award for their combined eight decades of contributions to ProRodeo at the PRCA’s Awards Banquet, called the nomadic rodeo lifestyle “a great life.” They both noted that they could not have done it without the stock contractors and rodeo producers who hired them over the years – or each other. Eirikson, dubbed “Mr. Everything,” was wrapping up his Canadian ProRodeo Hall of Fame career while Thomson was just starting to cut his teeth riding steers … and the two have been linked ever since. A decade later, Eirikson – now a stunt coordinator – passed on a movie gig but recommended Thomson and his twin brother, Cody, for the job. Thomson has played many roles since, including one in the 2003 made-for-TV movie Monte Walsh. Twenty-five years after Eirikson won his third and final Linderman Award, Kyle Thomson Thomson joined him in a class of just four Canadians to win the award that goes to the PRCA cowboy who makes the most money in three events – including at least one roughstock event and one timed event. To qualify, a cowboy must earn at least $1,000 in each event. In 2012, Thomson competed in saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and team roping, earning $34,773 total. Thomson’s best event is the bronc riding; he qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo in that event for the ninth time last year – at age 34. The three-time Canadian all-around champion has also qualified for the CFR once in steer wrestling. The only other Canadians to win the Linderman Award were Kenny McLean (1967 and 1969) and Bernie Smyth Jr. (1990 and 1992), an Australian who lived in Crossfield, Alberta. “A lot of good cowboys have won that award,” Thomson said. “And to be a Canadian who’s won it, when it took us 20 years to do [it again] – I think it’s pretty neat that my name’s attached to it.” Winning the award became a goal of Thomson’s when he saw Eirikson, a four-time Canadian allaround champ, win it in 1982, 1985 and 1987. And Thomson began his own quest with a little help from his mentor. Eirikson remembers lending Thomson his bronc saddle when the young cowboy was getting started, as well as selling him a bulldogging horse that helped Thomson – who first started rodeoing as a team roper with his brother – begin working that event. When Eirikson heard Thomson was in the running for the Linderman, he got in touch with him directly. “I told him, ‘When I won it back in 1982, you didn’t think much of it because you were just rodeoing. But when you finish rodeoing and your career is over, you look back at it,’” Eirikson said. “That’s the most prestigious award I won. You look back and say, ‘I beat all the guys that were, in my eyes, true all-around cowboys.’ It’s nice to be in that caliber of cowboys, the old-style cowboys.” The Linderman Award is named for Bill Linderman, a world champion in timed and roughstock events who died in a 1965 plane crash near Salt Lake City. The first Linderman Award was presented in 1966. – Eric Schmoldt Linderman Award, 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 542 Benny Reynolds, Melrose, Mont. (Cowboys first join under the PRCA’s permit system, which allows them to compete for some time without becoming fullfledged members. Once a cowboy has “filled his permit” by winning $1,000 at PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, he can apply to become a full member; he is considered a rookie for the remainder of that season.) The PRCA’s Resistol Rookies of the Year are the first-season cowboys who earn the most money in their events during that season. The Resistol All-Around Rookie of the Year is the rookie who earned the most money among all rookies who won at least $3,000 in each of two or more events. From 1956 through 2010, the PRCA also gave an Overall Rookie of the Year Award to the rookie who earned the most money in any one or more events, but 2010’s overall award was the last. Also of note: Starting with the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dakota Eldridge, 2012 All-around money earned at the Wrangler NFR counted in the rookie standings. The Rookie of the Year and Steer Wrestling Rookie of the Year only rookie who competed at the 2012 Wrangler NFR was bull rider Trey Benton III, who finished his rookie season ranked 12th in the world. PRCA rookie standings and the 2012 Rookie of the Year Awards are sponsored by Resistol Hats.
