This past year, our office has continued to serve our incredibly diverse graduate
students, as well as faculty and staff dedicated to the highest levels of excellence in
graduate education at MIT. We have been honored to work in collaboration with
partners across the Institute on new strategic initiatives such as the graduate
student back-up childcare program, a student quality of life survey and the graduate
student housing working group. The International Students Office has enhanced
international freshman orientation and run a successful pilot involving twice-weekly
walk-in hours. The ODGE has spearheaded a task force exploring graduate
education and digital technologies, graduate program learning assessments, and
the expansion of external graduate fellowship nominations. We continue to provide
extensive personal support to individual graduate students across the Institute, as
well as to strengthen and enhance our flagship diversity, professional development,
and community-building programs such as the MIT Summer Research Program.
We are extremely proud of the Graduate Student Council who have led a number of
new initiatives including a fund in collaboration with the Public Service Center for
graduate students to engage in local community outreach, “Taste of” cultural events
that include authentic cuisine, trivia, games, dancing, and art celebrating selected
regions of the world, and a Somerville Saferide shuttle line pilot. In 2013, the
dedicated and caring staff of the ODGE were awarded two MIT “Infinite Mile”
awards, including the entire International Students Office. We look forward to an
exciting year ahead in pursuit of our mission: “to support and serve individual
graduate students, programs and schools in order to make graduate education at MIT
empowering, holistic and transformative.”
