POWER OF THE MIND AND BODY Based on Eternal Grand Master Lee's years of experience with 500,000 members, he knows that the martial arts spirit is a major ingredient in the positive shaping of lives. This unique spirit provides focus, concentration, awareness, elevated self-esteem, and confidence to accompany Taekwondo's life saving skills. At ATA (American Taekwondo Association®), our goal is to inspire our students with dynamic martial arts spirit as we share with them the techniques of self-defense in Taekwondo. The catalyst for success in Taekwondo - and indeed in life - is to try hard. It is the act of doing one's absolute best at all times, in all situations. The martial arts spirit becomes a truly indomitable weapon in confronting the unwanted advances of an attacker, and in addition, the rigors of everyday life. For the adult, it includes the confidence and determination to succeed in your chosen profession. For the child it provides the focus and concentration to excel in school and the courage to say "NO" to those who corrupt the principles learned at home. In summary, ATA Taekwondo is more -- much more -- than selfdefense. It can , and will, become an integral part of your life. Plug into the unlimited power of ATA's Taekwondo and use it now. You'll be glad you did! HISTORY OF AMERICAN TAEKWONDO ASSOCIATION® Eternal Grand Master H. U. Lee began his "way" in Taekwondo after learning in the streets, then in a professional school in his home town of Seoul under the direction of Grand Masters Duk Sung Son, Jong Myong Hyun, and UnKyu Eom. Then, as today, there was a shortage of qualified people who wanted to teach the art, so a young red belt, H.U. Lee begins to teach after receiving his instructor's permission. Later Haeng Ung Lee as a 3rd Degree joined the Korean Army to teach the military intelligence people. He found himself on a cold island of the coast of North Korea. He made several covert combat missions. After serving his country he opened a professional school in Osan, near a U.S. Air Force base and found success. He later opened branch schools. An American Airman at the base offered help for him to come to American to teach. Grand Master Lee knew even then that teaching Traditional Taekwondo all over the U. S. and the world was his life's goal. Once in the U.S., Grand Master Lee first worked to build his first school in Omaha, Nebraska. Then he turned to fellow senior Korean and American instructors to build an organization. In 1969 the American Taekwondo Association® was founded. Rapid growth brings ATA innovation in martial arts: 1973 World's first copyrighted instructors' manual with standard operating procedures. 1980 Toll-free telephone lines Quarterly tabloid newspaper, the ATA NEWS. World's first computer system for reach and record keeping World's largest tournament - 2,700 competitors 1983 ATA Magazine - Taekwondo World Songahm forms were created 1985 Songahm Taekwondo Federation® (STF) was formed in South America. 1990 First Master to test in front of 10,000,000 people to inaugurate to Grand Master. Formed World Traditional Taekwondo Union ™ (WTTU) for World-wide Songahm Taekwondo. 1992 Retirement program for school owners started. 1995 WTTU goes on the New York Stock Exchange 1996 ATA / WTTU starts franchising schools 2000 First American Born Successfully Tested for 8th Degree (Chief Master Allemier) 2001 Second Master to test in front of 10,000,000 people to inaugurate to Grand Master. Formed World Traditional Taekwondo Union ™ (WTTU) for World-wide Songahm Taekwondo. SONGAHM SPIRIT OF TAEKWONDO As ATA/STF events begins: "Sir! I will practice in the Spirit of Taekwondo, with COURTESY for fellow students, LOYALTY for my instructor, And RESPECT for my juniors and seniors, Sir!" As ATA/STF events ends: "Sir! I shall live with PERSEVERANCE in the Spirit of Taekwondo, having HONOR with others, INTEGRITY within myself, and SELF CONTROL in my actions, Sir!" PURPOSE AND PRACTICALITY At ATA Taekwondo, our objective is to repeat our primary goals on a daily basis, to firmly instill our Songahm Spirit of Taekwondo in each of our students. Like a computer, our brains emit good information when programmed properly. The alternative is "garbage in, garbage out". Especially with our younger students, we feel it is necessary to develop for them a positive structure and pledge around which to build their character. Learn your Songahm Spirit of Taekwondo and recite it with feeling, thinking about the depth of the meaning. As you progress in your martial arts, you will increasingly understand the implications and purpose of the Songahm Spirit of Taekwondo Pledge. ATA MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS 1. A student with a current ATA membership that is actively participating in an ATA school/club may use a "60-day visitation privilege" if vacationing or on a business trip near another ATA school/club. The student, as a matter of courtesy, should have a letter of introduction from his/her instructor and must have permission from both their current school/club and the one that they will be attending prior to showing up for class. 2. A student with a current ATA membership that is moving to a new location, may transfer his/her membership to the new school. The transfer is handled by the instructors according to ATA policy. You must inform both the original instructor and the new instructor of the intention to relocate prior to making the transfer. 3. A student with a current ATA membership may attend any sanctioned ATA tournament by registering and paying the necessary fee. These tournaments are not open to non-ATA members. Therefore, quality and good sportsmanship, as well as safety, can be maintained. 4. All ATA members will receive a quarterly issue of THE WAY magazine. This magazine is written for ATA members and covers profiles, special defensive moves, "how to" for kicking techniques, and many unique articles about special people in the ATA. 5. You will receive with your orange belt an official American Taekwondo Association® member patch. This red, white, and blue patch (with ATA in the center) is to be sewn on the right breast of the uniform. Place this patch on the uniform as soon as you receive it. 6. Your membership also registers you and your current rank on our computer system at the ATA \ WTTU World Headquarters in little Rock, Arkansas. Your rank is recognized throughout the world by any Songahm Taekwondo affiliate. Upon each successful testing, you will receive a certificate verifying your new rank. You may hang this certificate on your wall and create a collection as you move through the ranks. 7. Included with the results of your first testing is your new ATA membership card. Use this card to register for testings and tournaments. 8. ATA also provides a toll free number for use by instructors and members. This number is available for every ATA member, however, most questions or concerns can be answered on a local level by contacting your instructor or a regional officer that your instructor might recommend. If your desire to contact the World Headquarters in Little Rock, please acquire the number from your instructor. YOUR LOCAL INSTRUCTOR Unlike many martial arts organizations, you have to be more than just a senior student to be certified by the ATA as an instructor. Many organizations will give the instructor status to students that have not even obtained the rank of black belt. Grand Master Lee's vision of quality instruction has required a systematic teaching program that will develop the necessary skills within a person to qualify them as a Songahm instructor. Furthermore, all instructors must complete an extensive training program which includes special clinics and camps designed to develop them, as well as apply this knowledge in a minimum of 300 teaching hours. All of this must take place after reaching the skill level of 1st degree black belt. Just as you have an instructor, your instructor also has a senior instructor. It's almost like a family tree. Your instructor or "sah-bum-nim" must give the same courtesy and respect to the person who trained him/her as is expected of you. Respecting seniors follows a chain of command that extends all the way up to the Grand Master himself. CLASS ROOM COURTESY • Students and instructors will bow to the flags each time they enter and/or leave the classroom area, even if the area is not being used for workout. (The bow is an Oriental "handshake" used in showing respect toward the flags, fellow students, and instructors.) • Students are to wait quietly on the red mats in the back of the class room as a sign of respect towards fellow classmates. • Students unavoidably tardy for class should bow at the edge of the workout floor and wait to be recognized by the instructor, then ask permission to join the class. Example: "Permission to join your class, Sir!" • Students should use the restroom before coming to class. A Student should ask permission if need to leave during class - water or bathroom • Students will respond "Yes/No, Sir", or "Yes/No, Ma'am", as appropriate, in all conversations with instructors. • Students will stand respectfully and bow whenever greeting an instructor, in or out of the classroom. • Students will address instructors by the last name and the proper title of Mr., Mrs., Miss, regardless of any personal or family relationship. • Students are encouraged to participate in class enthusiastically; however, they should avoid unnecessary conversations and speak only at the proper times. • Students not understanding a directive have a responsibility to raise their hands and ask that it be repeated. • The senior student among students of the same rank is the one who achieved the rank first. If the rank was earned at the same time, seniority may be determined by length of time in Taekwondo or by chronological age. An instructor may also prefer to rotate the senior position. • A student's personal appearance in class is a reflection of his or her pride. Cleanliness of person and uniform is imperative. • If students are allowed to use the classroom for informal workouts, they should wear the standard uniform or appropriately modest and respectful workout clothing, and follow all directions of the instructor on premises. • All students and parents in the room when the "Songahm Spirit of Taekwondo" pledge is recited, must stand at attention and recite the pledge with the group. • Hair should be short or pulled back; no unapproved headbands or sweatbands are to be worn in regular Taekwondo classes. Also nails should be short enough as not to injured other student during practice • There is to be no smoking or use of tobacco products in the school at any time; there will be no smoking, use of tobacco products, or consumption of alcohol at any time while in uniform or on school premises. • There will be NO use of profanity on the school premises or at any ATA function, class, or activity. • Permission of the student's instructor is required before a student may attend another ATA school or another martial arts school. • High-ranking visitors to the class should be greeted with appropriate respect; if class is in session, it should immediately be interrupted for this salutation. • Students will turn away from the instructor or partner when adjusting their uniform or belt. • Students will not wear street shoes on the workout floor. • Female students MUST wear a white T-shirt or sports bra under the uniform. • No jewelry, other than a wedding ring or religious symbols, will be worn with the uniform. • Students, parents, and guests will not converse with any person involved in a class session without the permission of the instructor. • Complaints, infractions, or violations of the moral or ethical standards of the ATA should be reported in the proper order: student, to instructor, to chief instructor, to regional officer, to national officer, to president. • Parents are more than welcome to stay and watch during class. The only thing we ask is to show respect to the students by reframing from talking and interrupting classes. Please turn off all cell phone must be off or place them on vibrate during class as not to disturb the class. • Monthly memberships must be current. If an account becomes delinquent the student will not be allowed to participate in class. If there is a problem with your account please call me at 225-6650909 to discuss the matter. Otherwise, you can either mail your payment to SCS or bring it to the school. Mailed payments must be cleared before the student will be allowed to return to class. • Students are to bow when entering and exiting the school and saying the word of the month Example: Bow as they enter the door reciting Loyalty Sir. • Remember to walk backward when walking away from the flag; as well as always facing away from the flag when doing sit up. Korean Commands • • • • • • Chariot Kyong Nae Jun Bee Shee Jahk Ko Muh Bah Roh – – – – – – Attention Bow Ready (as in ready position) Begin At Ease Return to Ready Position Tournament Courtesy • Regulation uniforms and belts are required. White athletic shoes may be worn when the student is not competing. • Students and instructors will bow to the flags and judges each time they enter or leave the tournament room. • Fellow competitors are first fellow ATA students. The competitive spirit must not preclude courtesy and respect. Students are encouraged to support their friends in an enthusiastic, friendly, positive manner. No negative comments are tolerated. • Students will answer enthusiastically; they will bow before entering the ring and bow and thank the judges upon being dismissed from the ring. • Students will address their opponents in a courteous manner, wishing them well before the match begins and thanking them when the match is completed. • Every ATA student, whether or not in uniform and whether or not a competitor, will stand at attention and recite the "Songahm Spirit of Taekwondo" with the participants. • Each student will conduct himself in a manner that brings honor to himself, his school, and his organization. Many spectators are new to the martial arts and may form opinions based on the actions and attitudes of students. • Make sure you show up in the proper attire. o At tournaments, all instructors and black belts are to wear either a clean white uniform with white tennis shoes or no shoes or dress clothing (No blue jeans), or Certified Instructor blues. (i.e. Sports Coats, Slacks or Suits for Men, Pant Suits or Dresses for Women) o All Instructors and black belts are expected to remain in this attire until they leave the tournament. • All Instructors and black belts are expected to stay until final bow-out unless you get permission from all of the following: ¾ Your Instructor ¾ Host of event ¾ Regional Chief of Tournament/Instruction (depends on event) ¾ Regional Vice President \ Director ¾ Special Guest (if applicable) For additional information about ATA please visit our national website at www.ataonline.com. PARENT / INSTRUCTOR RELATIONSHIP These tips, written by an instructor, will help you as a parent complete the Parent / Student / Instructor relationship that is important to have for your child's successful training. 1. We suggest that you set a schedule of at least two lessons per week, if possible. The student should attend often enough to retain information and progress smoothly. Remind your child when it is time to get ready for class; and help him get his things together. (His instructor will not let him use you as an excuse if he does not have all his equipment and his complete uniform.) As the novelty of the program begins to fade, other activities may divert your child's attention from his Taekwondo lessons. If he balks at coming, simply say that he doesn't have to participate. Put his uniform in the car, and bring him to class to "watch." Once he arrives, his attitude will likely change. It is important that you use this opportunity to teach your child to honor commitments – not to "quit." 2. If a student is in ill health, he should not attend class. If he has an injury, he may benefit from attending the class as an observer or in limited participation. (Speak with the instructor before the class begins.) 3. Each student is expected to maintain a clean, pressed uniform. It does not have to be freshly laundered for each class, but should look fresh and clean at all times. 4. If a student is in need of a quick snack before coming to class, please avoid snacks containing refined sugar and avoid milk products. Fruit juices and nuts are quick and nutritious choices. 5. Practice courteous and respectful responses at home. For example, a student should begin by using "sir" and "ma'am" at appropriate times. 6. Give strong emotional support to your child. Ask what he learned at class, praise effort (not ability), and watch his progress from time to time. It is not necessary that the parent attend every class. The child must learn to concentrate, which is sometimes difficult when the parent is in the room. You and the instructor can make this judgment together. 7. If you have questions concerning the methods or material in the lessons, please make an appointment to speak with the instructor. The instructors have specific goals for all classes and for each child. Because you know your child, you are encouraged to be an active part of the goal-setting process. If you feel that your child has negative or frustrated feelings, please try to identify the reasons) and speak to the instructor about them, even if they are not Taekwondo related. 8. Discipline is not punishment, it is training. The dictionary states that discipline is "training that produces moral or mental improvement"... one of Taekwondo's major goals. Training means forming new habits and correcting old habits. The child may see no reason to make an effort to change. At that time, he may make negative comments about his instructor and the school, just as he probably does, at times, regarding his school teacher. Avoid joining your child in criticizing the program or the instructor until you have had an opportunity to have a conference with the instructor. The instructor is interested in your child's progress, and that progress is best accomplished when the parents are an active part of the team relationship. 9. Please inform the instructor of any special characteristics or temporary circumstances that may interfere with your child's learning process. 10. Each student should bring his report card to the instructor each time grades are received. The instructors are interested in the "whole child," and will support you in encouraging your child's academic effort. Most parents find that Taekwondo training brings significant academic improvement by developing better skills in memory, concentration, and following directions as well as improved conduct, responsibility and respect. Form Meaning The name of your form is SongAhm which means: “Pine tree temple.” Pine tree is known as evergreen…Evergreen has strength the year round and a long life. Evergreen is a symbol of unchanging human loyalty. Color Belt Philosophy The following is the basic meaning behind the color of your belt. If you would like a more detailed description of the philosophy behind your rank, please refer to volume one of Grand Master Lee’s collection on traditional Taekwondo entitled, “The Way of Traditional Taekwondo.” The philosophical interpretation of the White Belt is… Pure and without the knowledge of SongAhm Taekwondo. As with the Pine Tree, the seed must now be planted and nourished to develop strong roots.” The student has no knowledge of SongAhm Taekwondo and begins with a clean (pure) slate. Form – Individual action Forms are a tool that an instructor uses to teach a student all the basics and kicks systematically…beginning stage to advanced. It is essential for you as a student of Taekwondo to learn how to develop focus, correct techniques, balance, speed, power, and feeling of movements. The forms are broken down into segments. The segments are combinations of techniques that create a natural flow to the form. Segments break down: 2-2-2-3-2-2-2-3 SongAhm IL-Jahng (1) was developed by Grand Master Lee and dedicated Senior Instructors. It has 18 movements and its Ki-haps are on the 7th movements (right side kick), and the 16th movement (left side kick). One-Step Sparring – Transition utility One-steps are a tool that an instructor uses to prepare a student for sparring. It is essential for you as a student of Taekwondo to learn how to judge distance, focus technique to specific body targets, execute techniques while the body is in motion (timing), and concentrate while under pressure of an attack. Take your time in each one of the one-steps to see that you are focusing on the important attributes listed above. Promotion Requirements 1. Know and perform your form 2. Do required One-Steps 3. As with the morning’s dawn, only the beauty of the sunrise is seen rather than the immense power.” The beginner student sees the beauty of the art of Taekwondo but has not yet experienced the power of the technique. Form – Individual action In order to develop good techniques, you should pay attention to detail for all basics (hand techniques). Such as the beginning point—where your hand starts, ending point—target, direction—shortest line form beginning point to ending point, rotation—twisting toward the end of your technique, and correct hand set up. A house which is built on sand will not last very long. Pay close attention to the 5 elements you see above. Segments break down: 3-2-4-3-2-2-4-3 SongAhm EE-Jahng (2) has 23 movements and its Ki-haps are on the 10th movements (left knifehand strike), and the 21st movement (right knifehand strike). One-Step Sparring – Transition utility Timing is very important in one step sparring practice. Learn how to respond to your partner’s attack, so pay attention in class to your instructor. Remember that in this type of exercise, you want to practice as realistically as possible. When you defend, it is imperative to evade as double defense in each one-step sparring. #1 is designed to evade backward, #2 is designed to evade left, and #3 is designed to evade right. Color Belt Philosophy The philosophical interpretation of the Yellow Belt is: “The seed is beginning to see the sunlight.” The student begins to understand the basics of Taekwondo. Form – Individual action In order to develop good techniques, you should pay attention to detail for all kicks (foot techniques). Such as the Chamber—loading position, Execution—direction, Re-chamber—reload position after kick is thrown, and Pivot— turning your standing leg. Pay close attention to the 4 elements you see above. Segments break down: 2-4-4-4-4-4-2-4 SongAhm Sahm-Jahng (3) has 28 movements and its Ki-haps are on the 7th movement (right punch), the 8th movement (left punch), and the 17th movement (left jump front kick). One-Step Sparring – Transition utility Focusing, hitting the proper target is another important part of the one-step sparring training. One of the biggest concepts of defense is against the weak areas of your opponent. All humans have weak areas that we call pressure points or vital spots, regardless of size or how strong that individual might be. Remember, when you defend, it is imperative to evade as double defense in each one-step sparring. #1 is designed to evade left, and #3 is designed to evade backward. Promotion Requirements 1. Color Belt Philosophy The philosophical interpretation of the Camouflage Belt is: “The sapling is hidden amongst the taller pines and must now fight its way upwards.” The student begins to realize his/her place in the world’s largest martial art. The student must now begin to spar in order to promote in rank. Form – Individual action Attitude is one of the most important aspects you should display when you practice form. All achievers have one thing in common, they have a “yes, I can” attitude. If you say “I can’t”, you have defeated yourself, and you didn’t even try. Everybody is afraid of failing. Look at failing as one step closer to success rather than as an ending. Segments break down: 3-4-5-4-3-5-4-3 SongAhm Sah-Jahng (4) has 31 movements and its Ki-haps are on the 7th movement (left back fist),and the 24th movement (right knifehand strike). One-Step Sparring – Transition utility Distance is one of the most important attributes to one-step sparring practice. Learn how to strike a target without fully extending your hands and legs. It is recommended to practice with a target such as a bag or a pad for learning distance and power. Remember, when you defend, it is imperative to evade as double defense in each one-step sparring. Keep your hands up during all motions as protection. #1 is designed to evade right, #2 is designed to evade backward, and #3 is designed to evade left. Free Sparring Free sparring for testing should be done to exhibit proper technique for the camouflage belt level in combination form. Each student should demonstrate their knowledge and skill of various techniques while using the control of no contact to light contact. Full sparring gear is required at testing. This consists of: Hand and Foot pads, Head gear, Chest Protector, Face Shield, Cup and Support (males), and Mouthpiece. Promotion Requirements 1. Know and perform your form 2. The components of the basic techniques are beginning to work in unison. Form – Individual action Balance is an important part of your training, sol please pay attention to detail elements. Solid Sole—keep your heel down on the floor. Body position—keep your body as upright as possible while kicking. Remember, reaching high is secondary. The most important quality of kicking is proper technique and balance. Hand position—keep your hands in guard position while kick is being performed. Eye contact—keep your eyes on target before, during, and after execution of each technique. Segments break down: 5-4-3-5-5-4-3-5 SongAhm Oh-Jahng (5) has 34 movements and its Ki-haps are on the 10th movement (right side kick),and the 25th movement (right reverse spearhand thrust). One-Step Sparring – Transition utility Remember, when you defend, it is imperative to evade as double defense in each one-step sparring. Keep your hands up during all motions as protection. #1 is designed to evade backward—no block, #2 is designed to evade left—45 degree angle toward your opponent, and #3 is designed to evade right. Free Sparring Free sparring for testing should be done to exhibit proper technique for the green belt level in combination form. Sparring stance—set up your feet which should be a little wider than shoulder width between front to back. The back foot’s heel should be in line with the front foot’s toe. The tree is in mid-growth and now the path becomes steep.” The student has crossed over into a higher level of SongAhm Taekwondo. The techniques, forms, and level of sparring become more difficult, creating a “mountain” that must be overcome. Form – Individual action Speed will be developed only after you strengthen your muscles. A Ply-O-Metrics workout will be excellent for explosive and dynamic movements. Consult with your instructor on this matter. Relaxation is also a key to speed during motion. Don’t have tension all of the time. The only time you should tighten your muscles is right before reaching your target. Symbol of Power and Peace Symbol of Power DAILY DOZEN The following stretching exercises are supplements to the Taekwondo workout. Stretching should not be done with cold muscles, so do something before beginning to warm up. A warm bath, sauna, or light exercises are fine. Also, when doing stretches, reach and extend--do not bounce. Because muscles need oxygen to stretch, remember to breathe normally while in the extended position. 1. 2. We'll start by stretching the groin and legs without stressing the knees. Slowly reach for your foot, with your face down toward the knee. Maintain the extended stretch position for thirty seconds; relax for ten seconds; extend again. Repeat three times on each side. (Remember to breathe normally and don't bounce!) Sit on the floor, feet together; reach for your feet, face toward knees. Maintain extended stretch position for thirty seconds. Repeat three times. Remember to breathe normally. (As you exhale, try to extend a bit more.) 3. 4. Sit on the floor with your knees up; place your hands on the floor, fingers pointing back. Lift to "table-top." Keep your torso level...no sagging! Relax your head, letting it drop. Hold position for thirty seconds; lower to floor and relax for ten seconds. Lift again. Repeat three times. 5. 6. With your feet extended to a stretch but comfortable position, reach out in front, trying to put chest on the floor. Don't bounce, and breathe normally as you hold for thirty seconds; relax for ten seconds. Repeat three times. Don't be concerned if your "splits" aren't wide. You will gradually improve. Place your foot flat on the floor, next to your knee. Place your bracing hand close to your body, and keep your back very straight. As you twist, keep both buttocks flat on the floor. Maintain twist for thirty seconds; relax for ten seconds. Repeat three times on each side. Place your hands under your shoulders and lift, arching your back while keeping your hip bones flat on the floor. Maintain stretch for thirty seconds; relax for ten seconds. Repeat three times. 7. 8. Reaching behind you, grasp your ankles, and arch your back. Lift your ankles higher to improve stretch. Maintain position for thirty seconds; relax for ten seconds. Repeat three times. Lie flat on your back, extend arms straight out, palms down. Raise both legs together until they are straight up. Lower legs to left side while turning face to the right. (Do not let legs rest on the floor.) Raise legs to straight up position again. Lower legs to right side while turning face to the left. Raise legs to straight up position again. Lower legs to right side while turning face to the left. Raise legs to straight up position again. Lower legs to right side while turning face to the left. Raise legs to straight up position again. Lower legs slowly to the floor. Repeat three times. Lie flat on the floor with legs together. Raise legs together until toes touch floor behind head. (Don't be concerned if you cannot touch the floor with your toes. Maintain control at first by bracing your back with your hands, and you will improve.) Maintain position thirty seconds. Lower legs slowly. Relax for ten seconds; repeat three times. Remember to breathe normally. 9. 10. Lie on floor with knees up. Hands are placed next to your head, palms down, fingers pointing toward your shoulders. Arch back and lift. Hold lift for thirty seconds; slowly lower to floor. Relax ten seconds and lift again. Repeat three times. 11. 12. Support heel on a table top or bar (or have a partner hold your heel). Bend the standing (back) leg with toes turned outward. Reach for foot, stretching face slowly toward the knee. Maintain stretched position for thirty seconds; relax for ten seconds. Repeat three times on each side. Support side of foot. Pivot standing foot with toes pointed out. Keeping back straight, stretch toward extended foot. Maintain stretched position for thirty seconds; relax for ten seconds. Repeat three times on each side.
