BROWN LIBRARY • Dedicated people, bound together like pages in a book, have the strength to achieve great things. It’s the most exciting time of the year in the library – summer reading time! This year the Library is partnering with the Williamsport Crosscutters Baseball team to encourage readers to get in the game and read this summer. The summer reading program begins June 8 and continues through August. Sign up on June 17 during the Crosscutters Opening Night game starting at 5:30 p.m. Celebrate the joy of reading On June 22, come and meet the Crosscutters on May 21 during National players at the library and sign up for summer Readathon Day. Use the social reading from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. media hashtag #Readathon2016 On August 11, summer readers who participate and #JVBLreads to share what you in the program will be celebrated during a Night are reading on Facebook, Twitter, at the Ballpark at the BB&T Ballpark at Historic Instagram or Tumblr! Brown Library’s Author Gala Chris Bohjalian, October 6, 2016 New York Times best-selling author Chris Bohjalian will headline the 14th annual Author Gala on Oct. 6 at Pennsylvania College of Technology. He is the author of 18 novels, including The Guest Room, Midwives and The Sandcastle Girls. The gala is the library’s main fundraising event each year. Table sponsorships are available by calling Robin Glossner at 570-326-6689. Reserve your table or seats now as this is expected to be a sell-out event. Table sponsors are invited to attend a private meet-and-greet with Bohjalian prior to the event. May 6 Book Review Luncheon Carile Brown award presented to Rick Mason by Library Director, Barbara McGary. Dr. Susan Ross will review Citizen Canine: Our Evolving Relationship with Cats and Dogs, by David Grimm, at the May 6 Book Review Luncheon sponsored by the Friends of the James V. Brown Library. Cats and dogs have evolved from wild animals to pets that have more rights and protections than any other animal in the country. Citizen Canine is well-written and researched, exploring both sides of a current trend as these pets approach “personhood.” Chapters focus on animal cruelty, military dogs, animal law attorneys, and abandoned pets during Hurricane Katrina Grimm is deputy editor at Science, the world’s leading journal of science news and scientific research. Ross is a professor in the department of sociolog y-anthropolog y at Lycoming College and winner of several teaching awards. She has coauthored the book, Deployed: How Reservists Bear the Burden of Iraq, as well as numerous articles. Her first year seminar called People and Pups: An Introduction to Animals and Society uses Citizen Canine as one of the readings for the class. Volunteer of the Year Award presented to David E. Wright by the Friends of the Library Board President, Greg Thomas. Library Volunteers Honored On April 11, volunteers who work in library programs and those who support the work of the Friends of the James V. Brown Library were celebrated at a festive event held in the Lowry Room. Gloria Greevy, vice-president of the library board of trustees, and Allison Savage,Volunteer Coordinator, remarked on the value of the many hard-working volunteers both inside the library and out in the county. The Friends organization is the fundraising arm of the volunteer movement that supports library programs and acquisitions with financial grants. Greg Thomas, President of the Board of the Friends, presented the Volunteer of the Year Award to David E. Wright, the Treasurer of the Friends board of directors, who carefully guards the treasuries of both the Friends and the bookstore. He also keeps the store staffed with volunteers. Barbara McGary, executive director of the library, presented the Carile Brown Award, named for the wife of the library’s founder, to Rick Mason. Rick has worked tirelessly in raising funds for the library and made a special effort in acquiring funding for the new Storymobile. He has been the voice of the library as Master of Ceremonies at the annual Author Gala for several years. The award recipients received framed plaques and the choice of a book to be dedicated to them and placed in the library collection. The event wrapped up with a reading from Nina White, Children and Youth Services coordinator. The luncheon will start at noon in the Lowry Room. Those who wish may purchase lunch at noon for $6. Reservations for lunch must be made by 3 p.m. the Wednesday before the review (May 4). Please note that you only need to register if you wish to reserve lunch.
