SUPERINTENDENT WEEKLY APRIL 11, 2014 HEREFORD ISD TEACHING WITH A SENSE OF PURPOSE Why did you enter the teaching profession? Why do choose to work with children in Hereford ISD? Perhaps you were inspired by an incredible teacher and wanted to make that same kind of positive impact on others. It may be that the reverse is true for you. There are many teachers who had pretty rough experiences in school themselves and are committed to creating a more positive learning experience for children. You may be a career changer; you found yourself in a job or profession that did not seem meaningful, and you were looking for a way to make a broader impact on society. Maybe you simply discovered an aptitude for working with children and felt called to the profession, developing a sense of purpose and meaning along the way. Maslow found that one of our most fundamental human needs is to have a sense of significance . We need to know that our work is important and that we are having a positive influence on others, and this impact is one of the great strengths of our profession. 30-6: School employees from our district, region, state and from all over the country and from a variety of school settings, remind us of this theme: it is important to us that our work is meaningful. Having purpose in life is one of the things that help keep us going. When we feel the work we do has purpose beyond ourselves and that we are contributing to the greater good, we stay motivated and passionate about our work. We in the educational community are pretty lucky..but is there more? This time of year the stresses can mount and we either do not or cannot hear our praises. Here are some ideas to remind ourselves and each other that our work matters. • Collect artifacts...notes from students and colleagues, articles and pictures • Update your resume (you’ve been busy) • Accept and give complements • Mentor or coach a new employee • Teach an aftershool activity • Offer a workshop for parents • Write a personal mission statement (Jerry Maguire) Find and celebrate the joy in all you do for children and our community!
