Welcome
It’s
paddlers, families and friends from around the world
–
as Kai ‘Opua Canoe Club hosts the 2016 Queen Lili‘uokalani Outrigger Long
Distance Canoe Races here in Kona, Hawai‘i.
my pleasure to welcome all paddlers, coaches and spectators as race week 2016 begins here in Kailua-Kona! Each of you
have prepared for this event with the heart of a true ocean paddler.
We have a great time planned for race participants. Fun, competitive canoe
races during race week and of course our signature 18-mile long distance
race. Be sure to participate in our cultural events like the walking tour
through Historic Kailua Village, multi-day Hawaiian Cultural Fair, International
Paddlers Night, Paddling Talk Story and the much-loved Torch Light Parade.
This race is a reflection of the paddlers who come here to compete
side by side with some of the best. We ask that everyone participate
in the spirit of aloha and practice sportsmanship, have fun and share
the camaraderie that unites us. Review all race information and
please adhere to rules, canoe regulations and procedures that are in
place to help make this the best race weekend ever.
I want to thank our volunteers, Board of Directors and all of those involved
in the planning and execution of the world’s largest long distance canoe
race. So much planning goes into this race and it’s certainly a job that takes
many, many hands.
Thank you for making the journey to be a part of the world’s largest
outrigger canoe races.
Be safe on the water.
Let Hawai‘i’s aloha spirit embrace and guide each paddler this race weekend.
Mike Atwood, Race Director
See you on the start line. Paddles up!

“The Queen Lili’uokalani Long Distance Race really began in our kitchen. Louis
[Kahanamoku] and I were talking about outrigger canoe racing, and he said
‘We really need a race to get us prepared for the Moloka’i Channel Race.’ We
talked about the course, the divisions and the general aspects of organization
–
and prepared a proposal. Louis then spoke about this new race to the Kai ‘Opua
Board of Directors. The Board, composed of Uncle Robert Greenwell, Dr. Mar,
John DeGuair, Walter Perreria, Dick Dennison, Uncle Donna Kualii and Uncle
Red Kanuha, agreed to the proposal that Louis presented, and they were all a
big help in getting the race started.” — Mary Jane Kahanamoku

transformed over the decades? Come to Talk Story and find out!

UP FOR THE
CHALLENGE?
For many years race organizers wanted to expand the
schedule and add a third day of racing for paddlers
traveling to Kona from near and far for the long
holiday weekend. While adding a 45+ mile race to
Kawaihae would accommodate canoe transports, the
idea was scrubbed since it proved too far after a full
weekend of long distance racing.
Ali‘i Challenge was conceived as a team event to wrap
competitive ocean abilities around adventurous land
challenges and inform
crews on Hawaiian culture and local history.
Historic Kailua Village holds significant treasures that
often go unnoticed as people walk on by. Ali‘i Challenge,
now in its seventh year, weaves in history with clever
clues that challenge participants in fun games, rarely
repeating tasks from year to year. The annual theme
is always top secret; previous themes have included
navigation, sustainability and Hawaiian monarchs.
IMPORTANT TIPS:
s Consider current events in Polynesian culture
s Take Thursday’s Historic Kailua Village Cultural Walk lead by noted
PHOTOS: CHARLAPHOTOGRAPHY.COM
historian Hannah Kihalani Springer
s Study the Herb Kane paintings found in the headquarters hotel lobby
s Create a crew flag
Most importantly, have fun! Keys to success in this competitive race are paddling,
reasoning and working together.
Mixed crews can sign up for Monday’s Ali‘i Challenge at Registration through Friday.

KONA’S RACING HERITAGE
Not much is written about Hawaiian canoe racing prior to the early 1900s. We do
know the first recorded regatta is thought to be in 1859 when races were held in
honor of the first birthday of Hawai‘i’s crown prince. Nearly 50 years later, racing
– –
patron Prince Kuhio sent a Kona team and a storied canoe, claimed to be the most
perfectly built and fastest in all Hawai‘i, to race in Honolulu. That Kona canoe and
crew beat all comers in 1907, ‘08, and ‘10. The Kona crew did not make it to the
’09 race.
–
Kai ‘Opua Canoe Club first organized in 1929 with 20 men and 12 women,
practicing then, as now, in Kailua Bay. Club leadership included Lind Childs, Judge
Stillman, Uncle Keoni Mano and Red Kanuha to name a few.
– –
It 1933, a regatta in South Kona’s Napo‘opo‘o solely devoted to canoe racing was
organized by legendary watermen Duke Kahanamoku, Charles Amalu, Dad Center,
John D. Kaupiko Sr., David Kahanamoku, Commander Bailey USCG, Paul Fagan,
George I‘i Brown, Dr. Albert Wall and Lorrin Thurston. Clubs competing in this first
all-canoe regatta were Outrigger Canoe Club, Miloli‘i, Hui Nalu, Queen’s Surfers,
–
–
–
Honaunau, Ho‘okena, Hilo and Kai ‘Opua. The following year, Kai ‘Opua won its first
– –
major statewide regatta in Napo‘opo‘o beating the Big Island clubs as well as the
O‘ahu clubs that had come over for the race.
–
Kai ‘Opua ceased operations during the 1940s with the commencement of WWII,
but regrouped in time for the 1952 Territorial Championships (Julian R. Yates Canoe
Championships), here in Kailua Bay, Kona. Clubs racing that day were Healani,
–
–
Honaunau Canoe Club, Hui Kailia, Hui Nalu, Kai ‘Opua Canoe Club, Ko‘olaupoko
Canoe Club, Ma‘alaea Boat & Fishing Club, Outrigger Canoe Club and Waiki–ki– Surf
Club.
In the early 1970s the idea of designing a race to train paddlers for the demands
of the Na Wahine O Ke Kai (Women) and the Moloka‘i Hoe (Men) long distance
races from Moloka‘i to O‘ahu took shape. Since those early beginnings, the Queen
Liliu‘okalani Outrigger Canoe Races have grown tremendously, now hosting over
2,500 paddlers from all over the world for five days of canoe racing every Labor Day
Weekend.
