So far, the paddlers have come from far and wide to race in the first races of the MCRA season. In just two races, we have attracted competition from Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana, as well as from all over Michigan. Upcoming, we have the Roscommon Canoe Challenge, one of the favorites of local racers. Then we travel to Pt. Huron for the Black River Race featuring an open water course that is perfect to practice what challenges Michigan Paddlers most– wake riding. For later June, we head to Newaygo for the PowerPaddle– this year’s mixed bonus race; and the Huron River Challenge– home to the first mentor and youth races of the year. With two free weekends at the end of June, supporting these races will add to your marathon success, so much so that races from all over find them worth the travel. The reality is a growing generation of new marathon paddlers is emerging in Canada. The nearby Province of Ontario is evidence of this as it’s quickly becoming home to both new and classic marathon paddling events. With more than 12 races sanctioned by the provincial sport body last year, 4 races in particular should stand out to you. All four races stand out in Ontario because they make up a paddling points series (oupps.ca). The Big East River X(BEX) is held in June and is a combination of lake and river, upstream and down. At 40 km (~25 miles) in length the race course has adequate water, no portages but tests your technical skills with endless switchbacks in the upper section of the course. The race has grown over the last 3 years and is treated by some as a warm up to its big brother the Muskoka River X. The NBMCA Mattawa River Canoe Race is 64 km (~40 miles) in length along the historic Mattawa River which was a major exploration and trade route in early North America. Last year marked the 400th anniversary that Samuel De Champlain passed through the course, and this year will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the race. The course includes up to 12 portages, some of which are rugged. The dinner and awards ceremony afterwards in the Mattawa should not be missed. The Kingston to Ottawa Canoe Race (K20) is up to 200 km (~124 miles) in distance with a number of shorter distances availa- ble. The start for the longer race course begins in Kingston and follows the historic Rideau canal right to the Canadian capital city of Ottawa. As an important recreational waterway route is marked by navigation buoys and winds it way through farmers fields, bedrock, lakes and a canal system over numerous portages which are mainly around historic locks. With an “unlimited” category, this would be a great race to challenge in a C4. The Muskoka River X (MRX) is held in September and considered an expedition paddling race. With a variety of distances ranging from 80 km to 220 km (137 miles) including up to 34 portages, competitors must paddle unsupported and carrying mandatory supplies while navigating by map and compass. The course follows the historic and scenic Muskoka River watershed, is rugged in nature, and combines lake water with upstream and downstream paddling. The word often used to describe the MRX is epic. If you’re looking for a new challenge and enjoy pushing your limits on the water, its a great time to take advantage of the exchange rate and compete in marathon paddling in Ontario. If you have any questions regarding marathon paddling races in please consult with Ontario Marathon Canoe and Kayak Racing Association(OMCKRA), the race websites or contact the race organizers directly. 9th Annual Huron River Canoe Challenge June 18th, 2016 at Gallup Park, Ann Arbor tion] (Expert 2 $20.00/boat [$15 pre- registration]) The highlight event of the Huron River Canoe Challenge will feature over 30 professional canoe racing teams competing in a “marathon style” event.
