Curbing Rough Play
COUNTRY LEAGUE WORRIED
By MIDFIELD
ROUGH PLAY IN FOOTBALL has received prominence in the newspapers and other media in recent days.
While it is acknowledged that the subject becomes topical ever
so often, very little has been done to eliminate unduly rough play
in. much of the football played in this state.
When suggestions have been put forward the cry goes up that the spectators enjoy the fierce clashes, but surely
there is a difference between a good
solid bump and the sly dropping of a
player behind the game.
"It is a body contact sport," is' a
popular saying. Yes, but that does not
open the door to the "king hit" artist.
The Western Border League of Victoria, which has 12 clubs — six in Victoria and the same number from South
Australia, has shown great concern
about rough play in their League and for
start have appointed two field umpires
to control under 18 games.
It is anticipated that the second umpire would not award free kicks but
act in the role of a steward with the
power to report players.
There was also talk that this League
would consider the introduction of a
rule empowering the umpire to "order
off" offending players.
This rule

This is a dangerous situation as parents are looking to other sports for
their sons and one of those attracting
a lot of attention is Soccer.
ROUND BALL THREAT
W e Australian Rules enthusiasts must
face up to the fact that the round ball
game does present a threat and now
is the time for us to look at our rules
and see if they measure up to 1974
standards.
Without being labelled as egotistical,
it ismade
only afair
to say
thatorthe
V.F.A.
has

move
two.
It has given the emergency umpire
the power to report, and he does.
Quite often it is this official who has
a player before the Tribunal.
Again, the Tribunal, while always fairminded, is not afraid to award severe
penalties. It is not a weak body by any
means.
The thought of being caught can be
the best deterrent in civil life and also
on the sporting field.
Watch the way motorists strictly observe the law when a mobile policeman
is in the vicinity. He will become the
most law-abiding citizen and not go a
kilometer over the speed limit of the
area.
So it can be in football if the players know that the umpires will report
undue rough play and the Tribunal will
exact a heavy penalty.
It is thought-provoking that the Western Border League has put a curb on
rough play firstly in under age games.
LOUD-MOUTHS
Too often boys learn bad habits and
it is with much regret that many are
urged on by loud-mouthed coaches totally unsuitable to be caring for lads.
Many parents are equally at fault.
At a junior game a few weeks ago,
the conduct of some parents w a s a
disgrace. They screamed for their sons
to "get stuck into him" and followed
with other similar epithets.
W e have a great game. It has a
terrific spectator interest, but it should
be free from unduly rough play. If
allowed
to develop
this scourge could
be
a severe
handicap.

Final Four decided Today
CAULFIELD — SUNSHINE RELEGATION CLASH
COBURG FOR GRAND FINAL
Five into four will not go!
One team has to drop out after today's games.
Dandenong, Port Melbourne and
Geelong West, all on 48 points and
with good percentages are set to play
in the finals.
So it leaves Oakleigh and Prahran
to fight for the 4th position.
Both play away — Prahran at Port
Melbourne and Oakleigh at Williamstown, and neither team will relish having to tackle such tough opposition to
figure in the final series.
But the struggle at the top of the
ladder is not the only interest in this
week's V.F.A. football.
Caulfield and Sunshine meet at Caulfield to decide the team to be relegated.
Then in 2nd Division the 2nd semifinal between Coburg and Waverley is
sure to be a thriller with the winning
team going into the Grand Final.
Williamstown has hit top form at the
end of the season and will be eager
to take on Oakleigh today. N o teams
find it easy at the seaside oval and it
will be a big test for the Oaks.
Barry Gill has a nice blending of
youth and experience in his Seagulls.
The Stillivans provide drive and the
steadiness of Fenton, Boxall and
Thompson in defence should limit the
Oakleigh forwards' opportunities.
Williamstown will be eager to finish
the season on a good note and I a m
selecting them to win.
BLUES' BIG JOB A H E A D
Prahran also faces a difficult task as
they go to Port Melbourne today.
Port flppepd at Dandenong last Sunday, but can usually be relied on to
come back strongly after a beating.
Prahran is enjoying a winning run,
having beaten Preston, Sandringham
and Caulfield in recent weeks, so the

So it apears the fourth place will

BATTLE FOR B O T T O M
Caulfield holds a slight percentage
over Sunshine and as the game is at
Caulfield I expect the eBars to win
and so get a second year in 1st Division. This will be a tense game with
all the drama of a grand final
Geelong West and Dandenong meet
in a game which will see the winner
playing in the 2nd semi-final
Geelong West play strongly at home
and their small men, 'Darky' Harris and
David Irvin, together with their highly
skilled big men, led by David ManSon,
should prove too strong for Dandenong.
There is nothing hanging to the
Preston - Sandringham
game.
Both
have disappointed and wil be looking
to next season now. I'll go for Preston.
LIONS TO G R A N D FINAL
It is the big game in 2nd Division
and Coburg will go into the game
favourites.
The result could swing on the form
of the forwards. Peter Smith notched
13 against Mordialloc a fortnight ago
while Brent Ziesler, Waverley's fullforward got seven against Werribee.
Coburg has proved a most consistent team throughout the season with
one loss. That was to Waverley on M a y
5. The result was reversed later when
Coburg won by 17 points.
Coburg is tipped to win again today.

BIG PRIZE FOR L U C K Y PLAYER
The best player in the Grand Final
of the Lightning Premiership is to be
the lucky recipient of a grand prize.
Cathay Pacific Airways have offered,
through ATV-0, to present the best
player in the Lightning Premiership big
finale, two return tickets to Hong
Kong on the new Sydney-Hong Kong
flight.
A litle bird has whispered that more
big prizes for the Lightning Grand
Final could be on the way.
Cathay Pacific, a British-owned company operating Boeing 707's, is to be
congratulated on their generosity.
Y O O - H O O O N THE V.F.A. BALL
Our major sponsor, Yoo-Hoo drinks,

They have donated plenty of their
products for players in all finals and
the V.F.A. thanks Yoo-Hoo for this
thought.
The $5.00 award in each division for
the Club Championship has resolved
itself and the lucky clubs to share the
S1000 award are COBURG (2nd Div.)
and PORT M E L B O U R N E (1st Div.).
W e are sure these clubs wil be
thrilled with the Yoo-Hoo award.
GOALKICKING A W A R D S
IN THIRDS
Winners of the goalkicking awards in
the Thirds were announced last week.
With 107 goals, Bill Brewer, of Northcote, w o n the Set Alexander Trophy in
Second Division.
Second with 74 goals Phillip Constantinou, of Caulfield, took off the Roy
Kent Trophy.
GILLON M E D A L T O
CONSTANTINOU
Phillip Constantinou, of Caulfield, has
won the 1974 Gillon Medal for the Best
and Fairest player in the V.F.A. Thirds
(First Division).
Phillip w o n with 26 votes, one ahead
of Mark Lloyd, of Oakleigh.
Phillip's win is more creditable than
it appears, as he played the last few
games with a bad groin injury.
Despite this injury he carried on,
mostly from the forward pocket, to also
win the Roy Kent Trophy.
Well done to Phillip, and the Caulfield
club.
PETER SMITH'S 100
Coburg forward, Peter Smith, became
the first senior V.F.A. player to score
more than 100 goals this season, kicking .13 in the last round to tally 101 for
1974.
Peter is the fourth Coburg player to
top the ton. Others were Lance Collins (twice with 108 and 116), Bob Pratt
(183) and Jack Titus (119).
Peter has joined a formidable line-up
and deserves our praises. Well done
Pete

WILLIAMSTOWN
THE T O W N E R S ' turned on class football to topple Sandy last week.
W e had many winners, with Tony
Hannebery giving a scintillating display and Ron Fenton and Glen Townsend (6 goals), were another great
pair.
The highlight of the game was the
fact that Bob Percy was competing in
his 100th encounter. Since he joined
the Seagulls in 1969, he has been one
of the most consistent footballers in
the story of the club.
Percy was given the honour of leading the side out, and he was treated
to a big night out after the aame.
There will be a pleasant FrirJay Night
