MATCH PREVIEW
Round 8 of the 1991 Mayne Nickless Cup starts with
the A B C televised Match of the Round between top of
the ladder Port Melbourne and number two spot holder,
Werribee. What a start to another great weekend of VFA
football, the rest of the round is equally competitive and
should provide VFA supporters with a feast of fantastic
football.
WERRIBEE v PORT MELBOURNE
The Tigers and the Borough meet in a clash that is of
equal importance to both clubs. Port will be determined
to preserve their unblemished record and stay on top
while Werribee are equally determined for a victory
which would see them join Port on 7 wins and keep
them just out of Box Hill's reach for the moment at least.
(Box Hill have played one less game).
The Tigers responded to their loss to Coburg in
Round 6 with a convincing win over an improving
Prahran. Steven Sells was in top form with the boot,
kicking 7 and Neal Daniher with 5. The Tigers appear to
have the flexibility up the ground with players like Sells,
Daniher, Drum, O'Keeffe, Knight and E a m e s which
allows for a multi-pronged attack. Leon Harris will be
working hard motivating his charges for one of their
most important games to date.
Port Melbourne, fresh from its comprehensive win
over Coburg last Saturday, will be fired up for this vital
clash. The Boroughs have displayed great teamwork all
around the ground in their games this season. Port have
a strong defence with Chrimes, Gasparoni, who showed
plenty of dash last week and Cameron. Paul Tilley
provides Port's on-ball players with a plentiful supply of
the ball. Top performers in recent weeks 1 have been
Harkins, Bailey, Donald, Hetherton, Yorgey, James and
Paul.
This should be a tight, close fought encounter, with
both sides committed to attacking football through their
talented centre line and forwards, the key to victory may
WILLIAMSTOWN v BOX HILL
be the skill and determination of the defences.
Recorder
Werribee
Reigning Pick:
premiers,
Williamstown, in 8th position with
2 wins from 7 outings are struggling to find their form of
last season. The Seagulls had their chances to win at
Sandringham last week but went down to the Zebras in
the closing minutes in a tight game.
T h e Towners are missing s o m e key players in
Marcus O'Connor, Joskun Aziz, Ian Rickman and the
injury list has increased with Chris Burton's hamstring
injury and Tony Pastqre w h o did not appear in last
week's g a m e after half-time. The Seagulls will have to
undergo a marked transition if they are to take the points
from the Mustangs.
Box Hill have been the quiet achievers of the VFA
season so far. Shane Molloy's boys have gone about the
business of winning games with great stealth.
The Mustangs may appear an unassuming side but
they have displayed great tenacity and strength of
character in their outings. They have had some great
performances from Mark Lisle, David Buttifant, Brendan
Hogan, Laurie Zarafa, Scott Hicks and Mark Deboer.
The Mustangs appear to have the edge in this g a m e
with their abundance of running players.
Recorder Pick: Box Hill.
COBURG v DANDENONG
This g a m e is another cut throat encounter for both
sides. D a n d e n o n g are in fourth spot ahead of
Sandringham on percentage with Coburg knocking on
the door in 6th position.
While Coburg were soundly beaten by Port last
week, their major weakness appeared to be an immobile
forward line who lacked imagination and resolve. The
Lions with a full list will pose problems for all the major
contenders.
Outstanding in defeat for Coburg last week was Brad
N i m m o , who, to use that worn phrase, played a
captain's game. He was resolute in defence and when
he went onto the forward line in the last quarter, kicked
two goals and was instrumental in a number of others.
Dandenong have looked a formidable combination in
all but two of their 6 games. The two losses are difficult
to explain, perhaps the loss of the on-field leadership
coach Tony Elshaug provides, may go s o m e way to
explain the defeats. However, they have chalked up
s o m e high scoring results including three 30 goal
scorelines on the way.
Versatility appears to be the key for the Redlegs who
have a young side who run and back up all day.
This g a m e is also a battle of two astute coaches and
it should prove
to be a very interesting
clash.
SPRINGVALE
v OAKLEIGH
Recorder Pick: Dandenong.
Like their Grand Final opponents of last year,
Springvale are also struggling to recapture .their 1990
form.
The Vales have looked a little flat in some of their
g a m e s and Phil Maylin will need all his skill and
experience to rekindle the flame in what is a side full of
talent and experience.
Best players for the Vales in last week's game were
Rod Morgan, Peter Maloni, Stuart Nicol, Keith Robinson
and Martin Mende.
Oakleigh appears to be lacking a few key players to
enable them to break the drought. They are able to stay
in touch with most V.F.A.
sides forJUNE
three 1quarters
but are
4 2,1991-3
MATCH PREVIEW (Cont.)
unable to stay with the pace for the final term. Last week
they were within 2 goals of Preston going into the last
quarter.
Consistent players for the Oaks have been Peter
Hickey, Mark Lemon, Andrew Sutherland, Micky Owen,
Brien Todd, Gary Hawker and the ever reliable Rino
Pretto with a season tally of 29 goals.
Springvale should have too much experience and
around the ground strength for the Devils.
Recorder Pick: Springvale.
PRESTON v PRAHRAN
These are two sides that cannot be under-estimated
and they will trouble many sides during the course of the
season.
Preston may not be experiencing the smoothest ride
but they are quite a handful for any side visiting the
Cramer Street Oval.
The Bullants are no doubt missing Neil Jordan on
field as he adds plenty of drive and fire to this side, w h o
have some fine on-ball players such as Adrian Marcon,
Joe Lumicisi and David Owen.
Preston pulled ahead of Oakleigh in the final term
last week. They will, however, need to be more vigilant
against the T w o Blues in this encounter.
Prahran appear to be slowly coming together as a
unit. They had their opportunities against Werribee last
week, but were not able to finish the job.
The playing personnel is certainly there, perhaps the
right combination will be struck shortly and live up to the
expectations of all T w o Blue supporters.
Recorder Pick: Preston.
FRANKSTON v SANDRINGHAM
Another bayside battle this week with the Dolphins
and the Zebras doing battle at the Kars Street Oval.
In their two encounters last year the honours were
shared. In R o u n d 2 Sandringham were victorious
21.22.148 to 17.11.113, the return encounter in Round
15 reversed the result with Frankston 19.15.129
defeating Sandringham 11.13.79.
In 24 encounters both clubs have 12 wins each,
which adds that little bit of spice to this match.
Of the two teams, Sandringham have been the most
consistent with 4 wins, 2 losses whilst Frankston with 2
wins from 7 outings will be keen to return to the winning
list after a substantial loss to Dandenong last week.
The Dolphins are a talented side with s o m e class
players and they will take the g a m e right up to the
Zebras. In form players for Frankston are Vandermeer,
Bingley, Keane, Collins, David Martin and Steve Hamill.
Sandringham, victorious in a close g a m e against
Williamstown last week, will be determined to stay in the
five with a win in this game.
Jamie Duursma leads a mean defence assisted by
Brett Bailey, Peter Czerkaski and Stephen Bonney.
Other top performers for the Zebras have been Peter
Ryan, Joe Rugolo and Adrian McKenzie. Coach Darryl
Nisbet enjoys his football and will be exhorting his
players in this important game.
Recorder Pick: Sandringham.

WILLIAMSTOWN
Well today w e welcome the Box Hill "Mustangs" for the 44th playing of
the two sides. W e have won 33 of those encounters and two matches have
been tied.
Despite booting a remarkable 11 straight goals in that sensational third
term at Hampton Oval, w e virtually had the game in the dying moments to
go down by three points. Still it was a great improvement on the last three
weeks of football by the "Gulls". Best were Bill Swan, Dale Height, Tom
McGowan, Brett McTaggart and Grant Smith.
Joe Patterson w o n the Newport Pizza Hut voucher for his fine
performance under difficult circumstances following a family bereavement. We express our sympathy to Brian Patterson and Family of the sad
passing of his brother at the weekend.
Advertiser Award Scott Perry 4, Tom McGowan 2, Vince Turcinovich 1.
The surprise on the field appearance of Ian Rickman (13 goals) in the
curtain raiser opened eyes at Hampton and it was great to see a return to
the field of Marcus O'Connor (7 goals). Others to do well were Ricky
Slevison, Matthew Bury, Jason Williams and "Roo" Muschialli. It was an
amazing performance having 56 shots for goals in just 100 minutes of
football.
Not to be outdone, the Thirds also recorded 54 shots in the same period
to record their third successive win and despite a hand injury to coach, Brian
Carrick he is a very happy mentor at the moment.
Best for the Thirds were Albert Balchan (10 goals), Nathan Stewart,
Luke OToole, Greg Kizan, Steve Borszeki and Chris Phelan.
Congratulations to the Under 12 "Quit" lads for making the finals last
week at Toorak Park.
Players wore Black Armlets for the Sandringham game as a mark of
respect to the passing of life member, Arch Fowler. Arch was 84 years of
age and was also one of only two people, to be a life member of both the

A good effort by the Firsts against Preston and with a little luck could
have won the game. Best players were Andy Sutherland, Michael Owen,
Rino Pretto (8 goals) and Gary Hawker. After an even first half the Seconds
were no match for the Bullants. Best players were Paul Payne (6 goals)
Michael Roach, Grant Rowlands and Anthonny Panozzo. In a game that
was close throughout the Thirds faded late in the last quarter to lose by 25
points. Best players were Jason Lindsay, Dean Hannan and Peter Graham.
This week w e travel to Springvale whom we have played on 8 occasions
for 4 wins and 4 losses. Highest score 23.19.157, biggest win 34 points in
1982 and 1983 respectively.
Congratulations to Michael Owen who last week played his 150th game
with Oaks. Only four players have played more games for Oakleigh — Greg
MacDonald, Charlie Temme, Don Kitto and Alan Mudge. Michael also has a
career tally of 356 goals with the Oaks.
The Club is again running a sweet drive. If anyone can sell some sweets

for the Lions last week. Unrecognizable from the side that outplayed
Werribee a fortnight ago, the Lions were no match for the rampaging Port
Melbourne. Coburg will need to produce an amazing form reversal to be
able to challenge the strong Dandenong team today. The reserves are
hurting badly from the huge number of injuries at the Club and find it difficult
to match it with sides for four quarters. The Under Nineteens struggled
again to beat off a spirited Port Melbourne, whose performance belied their
ladder position. The thirds have to generate some enthusiasm and develop
a better work ethic if they are to climb back up the ladder.
Important Announcement!!!
Supporters should note that the date of the Annual Ball is Saturday, June
15th not Friday, June 14th as previously advertised! The venue remains the
Southern Cross, and the cost remains $55 all inclusive, which still
represents outstanding value. Bookings for the upcoming Saturday night

Welcome to Werribee's first TV Match of the Day to be played at the
Werribee ground. Werribee has played Port Melbourne on nine occassions
with the honours being with Port, eight wins to one. The Werribee win was at
Chirnside Park in 1982, Werribee's first year in First Division football, the
winning margin being 1 point.
Last Sunday the Tigers stepped back into the winners circle with a good
performance against Prahran.
The Rick Wolany Best Players were David Allday, Richard Geary,
Damien Drum, Michael McMaster, Ritchie Raeburn, Stephen Sells and
Neale Daniher.
The Reserves found Prahran to be far more experienced, they played
well but the pressure told in the final term. Werribee Plaza Mobil best
players were Matty Jones, Brad Dickson, Rod McPherson, Glenn Kirkwood,
Phillip O'Keeffe and Vaughan McCarthy. Goal kickers were O'Keeffe 5,

Jones, Morris, Pavlidis 2, Shaw, Scicchitano, Spears and McCarthy 1 each.
The Under 19's continued on their winning way with a percentage
boosting victory.
Wendouree Building Society best players were Adam Pagen, James
Freestone, Stephen Nielson, Paul Currie and Peter Camerilleri. Goal kickers
were Nielson 11, McGregor-Dawson 3, Marks 2, Camilleri, Lewczuk, Porter,
Welsh, Fitzpatrick, Currie.
PORT MELBOURNE
SENIORS: Not as an impressive win as it should have been. Still w e
made it seven straight and have now defeated all last year's finalists except
Werribee, todays opponent, so the game represents an additional challenge
other than keeping our unbeaten record intact.
RESERVES: Very pleasing to report that Neil Ross's charges turned in
their best performance for the season bowling over second placed Coburg.
The return from injury of a number of senior players has obviously benefited
the team and with a few more becoming available over the coming weeks
things are at last starting to look good.
U N D E R 19's: Showed they are capable of winning games despite a big
loss. What they must learn is to be competitive against good sides - you
cannot afford a lapse in concentration and to convert goalkicking
opportunities. Best: Matt Bonnett, David McDonald, Billy McGee, Kevin
Terry.
C E N T U R Y UP: Congratulations to Steven "Oscar" Harkins who today
plays his 100th game with the club. Steven is a local product commencing
his career with Port Colts under 11's. He played his first senior game in
1984, also that year he played in the reserves & under 19's Grand Finals
and won the reserves best & fairest. Other awards have been — runner-up
seniors best & fairest 1988, most determined 1989, best & fairest 1990 as
well as tieing for the Liston Medal. "Congratulations and well done from
everyone Oscar and that includes your number one fan — "Darkie".
Trivia Question: Four Brownlow Medal winners — Colin Watson, Fred
Goldsmith, Peter Bedford and Bob Skilton have all played for Port. N a m e
the two that played for Port prior to playing V.F.L. Football.
Answer to last week's question: Ted Freyer 1938, 39, 40, 41, 45 — Rob

as Denis Walter and such wonderful programmes as The Castlereagh Line!
No doubt Denis will be very Keeno to see the Dolphins do well!! Our last
outing here saw Frankston victorious by some 50 points on a cold wet and
miserable day. The weather has improved this time round so let's hope that
w e can turn that result around and win here today. Well the Beach Road
Oval was not the place for the faint hearted last week. The last quarter was
a thriller due to an amazing comback by Williamstown. The Zebras however
steadied with some excellent play by Joe Rugolo, Steve Bonney, and some
right footed goals by Frank Rugolo to win by just 3 points. It was great to win
the Bayside Cup for the first time but more importantly to get the four points
and as one member said after the game w e are a chance.
The boys celebrated well last week and it was good to see Melbourne
players Steve O'Dwyer and Earl Spalding down at Sandy enjoying the win
as well. I'm sure they appreciated the entertainment provided by Jamie
Duursma and a cast of thousands singing 'You've lost that loving feeling",
Dino Dipierdomenico doing the Bret Bailey Rap, and Chris and Pat Garret
with their rousing rendition of "Stand By Your Man". Tammy would have
been proud of them!
Don't forget our next businessmen's luncheon is on Friday 14th June

FRANKSTON
Last weekend a big loss by both Seniors and Seconds at Dandenong,
cannot be brushed off — the Redlegs were far too good.
Our fine Dolphin Thirds carried the colours well with a big win over their
Dandenong opposition.
Best for Seniors were S. Bingley, G. Keane, C. Denereaz, D. Martin and
P. Vandermeer. For our Seconds G. Brown, D. Hynes, G. Savage and F.
Stapleton did well. Our champion Thirds were best served by A. Dibben (10
Goals) D. Winkel, S. Heenan, D. Uccello, P. Gardner, J. Sayers (7 goals).
Winning numbers for week-end 19th May for "200" Club members were
37 and 67. Because of the sad demise of The Peninsula News the weekly
winning "200" Club numbers will appear in The Standard from now on.
Today w e welcome the Sandringham Zebras to Frankston Park and both
our Seniors and Seconds will be out to redeem themselves.
With our Thirds leading the Premiership ladder and our Seconds in the
top five it is now up to our Senior line-up to make a move up the ladder.
The Dolphin Restaurant is proving very popular. C o m e and have a look

Mission Beach Resort
Mission Beach in far north Queensland, midway between Townsvill
and Cairns, is Australia's tropical paradise: clear water, golden
sands, lush rainforest.
Mission Beach Resort is set in 45 acres of tropical rainforest, directly
opposite Dunk Island and is readily accessible by road, rail and air.
From Mission Beach Resort, you can explore the Great Barrier Reef,
snorkel or scuba among tropical fish and coral, experience white
water rafting, go bush walking or beachcombing, search the
rainforest for the elusive cassowary, hire a catamaran or a sailboard .
.. or just relax by the pool in the tropical sunshine.
