Monterey Coast Preparatory to Host
Scotts Valley Chamber Mixer on April 23 (5:30 – 7 p.m.)
M
onterey Coast Preparatory (MCP)
specializes in developing the
gifts and talents of students with
learning disabilities ranging from autism
to dyslexia to anxiety. But MCPc’s courses
are far from remedial; MCP graduates earn
a fully accredited, University of California
approved high-school diploma. The MCP
Community is thrilled to have finally
found a home – in Scotts Valley, Calif.
“We are so pleased to be part of this
community,” said Jay Dunlap, Executive
Director. “The local schools and businesses
have been warm and welcoming. Scotts
Valley clearly understands the value of
education.”
Monterey Coast Preparatory moved to
Scotts Valley from Santa Cruz in August of
2014. Over the last three years, the school
has realigned and strengthened its mission
to provide college preparatory education
to students who learn differently. The MCP
program includes hands on projects, state
approved curriculum, weekly teacher
training on how to accommodate different
learners, and on-going collaboration with
Stanford University labs and research
projects.
“Before I came to MCP I was failing
most of my classes. School was a dark and
depressing place. At MCP I learn about how
I learn and what I need to do to improve.
Now my grades are mostly A’s and I plan
to go to medical school after I graduate,”
said Aziz Bhullar, a junior at MCP.
This year at the new Scotts Valley site,
students have enjoyed physical education
at Siltanen Park, performed scenes from
classical Greek and Roman plays at the
Vine Hill Amphitheater, and developed
video documentaries for US History. Students are currently engaged in an all-school
effort to produce the play, “Shakespeare’s
Star Wars,” under the expert guidance of
veteran thespian, and MCP English teacher,
Karin Babbitt.
Dr. Rebecca Hoover, Director of Sciences and Math, has developed a humble,
but comprehensive laboratory here in

Scotts Valley. Currently, the biology class is
using electrophoresis to strip and identify
DNA. The science program is designed to
develop meaningful connections between
“textbook” concepts and their application
in the real world. The Bay Area is a hotbed
of genetics research. MCP is producing scientists by arming students with the skills
required for work in the field.
The Marine Science class conducted
field research in Elkhorn Slough, collected
and classified plankton from the Monterey
Bay, and is currently using the Environ-
mental Fluid Mechanics Lab at Stanford
University to simulate Tsunamis and
conduct other wave tank experiments.
Classes at MCP are engaging, relevant
and hands-on. The school community is
kind and compassionate.
“Our mission is to create a model for
learner-centered education. Our program is
effective for all types of learners, especially
those that have struggled with learning in
traditional school environments, because
we maintain a laser-like focus on learning
and continuous improvement,” said Kris
Neustadter, Director of Student Services.
MCP’s new location, near the boundary
between two counties, means the school
can better serve students from Santa Cruz
County and from the Silicon Valley. Students
who learn differently make the trip from
Monterey, Menlo Park, and everywhere
in between, so they can get the academic
support they need to prepare for college and
the social and emotional support they need
to grow into successful adults.
“What I like about MCP is the small
classes and how much the teachers care
about us,” said Kai Peters, MCP sixth grader.

Official Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting
O
n Wednesday March 15, Kelinda’s
Customs held their Official Grand
Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Guests were treated to a delicious
lunch and celebrated with champagne.
Kelinda’s Customs is owned by locals, Ken
Johnson and his wife Linda, thus the name
“Kelinda.” Ken and Linda, their daughter
Brittany, Linda’s sister Tina, as well as
Ken’s parents, Joyce and Jay, all poured
their sweat into cleaning up this building
and making their dreams become a reality.

Ken’s passion for motorcycles began
when he was just a boy. He started out
fixing friend’s motorcycles just for the
fun of it. He would later start a successful
mobile repair business working from
home. When he soon found his driveway
overflowing with motorcycles he finally
decided it was time to open up his own
shop. Ken has a genuine passion for what
he does and it really shows. “I love turning
wrenches”, says Ken. He says sometimes
he’s having so much fun working that he
almost forgets to stop and keep track of the
hours he started and stopped. In addition
to motorcycle repair, they also sell t-shirts,
leather goods, helmets, jackets, gloves and
motorcycle accessories.
Ken and his family are long-time residents of Scotts Valley and their love for the
community shows. In fact they recently held
a BBQ fundraiser and were able to present
Valley Churches United Missions with a
check during the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

Boys & Girls Club of the Valleys Hosts Chamber Mixer
O
n March 26 the Boys & Girls Club of the
Valleys hosted a Chamber Mixer to kick off
their 2015 fundraising drive. It was a heartfelt
evening as Boys & Girls Club Board Members
and community leaders spoke about their
passion and vision for the Club. Multiple gracious donors stepped up that very evening and
wrote checks on the spot to aid in the cause.
Before they can open the doors, they need to
raise approximately $500k, or about three year’s
operating budget.
The Boys & Girls Club of the Valleys needs
our help. If you or someone you know would
Boys & Girls Club President Corky Roberson (right)

Malone’s Celebrates 35 Years Serving Scotts Valley
O
n Tuesday March 10 Malone’s Grille celebrated their 35th Anniversary. On this
special day they “rolled back” their prices
and patrons were treated to $.25 beers as well
as Cheeseburgers and Fries for only $3.95.
For the last 35 years, Patti Malone has been
a pillar in our community. She has done so much
for our community over the years, it is difficult
to measure. Whether it was serving as President
of her Rotary Club, supporting our schools, or
putting on a fundraiser for someone in need, you
can always count on Patti to lead with her heart
where her community is concerned.
