14th June 2016
This time of term provides us with an opportunity to reflect on many achievements we can
celebrate as a school from throughout Term 2.
Reading through students’ reports, there were many references to wonderful learning that has
taken place at all levels, in all subjects. Along with student portfolios in the junior years, they
provide a wonderful overview of rich and diverse experiences and learnings this year. Last
Friday’s Pupil-free Day also provided staff with a chance to learn from and work with our
school mentor, enabling new opportunities to be considered and planned for in Term 3.
Perhaps the most significant and visible development this term has been the completion of our
bike shed and landscaping works, transforming the aesthetic of our school and providing
greater parking for students who ride to school. PA events including the Fun Run, Mother’s
Day Stall, Bunnings BBQ and Movie Night were wonderful successes and will contribute significantly to resourcing of the school and the opportunity for families to get together.
Students have also actively engaged in a four week soccer clinic, Bike Education and competed in District and Regional Cross Country and State Tryouts for Basketball and Soccer, with
much success.
There are many more positives we can reflect on with fondness and a sense of pride, however
these few I have mentioned give us great reason to be enormously excited about what Term 3
may hold!

Nude Food Tip #3
Try home baking a tray of muesli slice to cut into bar-size
pieces and put in your lunch box each day… fun to make, you
can put in your favourite cereals, dried fruit and seeds
(avoid nuts) and there’s no packaging required!
School Banking News!
Apologies, but the Flying Snake Tail reward is now out of stock & will
no longer be available to order as a reward item.
Thanks Anna
Learning at Malvern Valley
CHESS INCURSION followed by a lunchtime Chess Club :
As part of our Enrichment Program here at Malvern Valley, we are planning to
have a lunchtime chess club and grade 1-6 are eligible to join. It will be $130
per student for the term.
On Friday this week the grade 1-6 students will be involved in a chess incursion
where they will receive an enrolment form. At this stage we are looking at a maximum of 15 students but if there is more interest, we will revisit how those places are distributed and if there is a
need for a 2nd club.
Please get your registrations in by Wednesday 22nd June.

Election Day BBQ & Cake Stall - Saturday 2 July
Thank you to those parents who have already signed up to help on the BBQ & Cake Stall on
Election Day. We still need lots more helpers so please visit this link to see our Sign-Up on VolunteerSpot and how you can help: http://vols.pt/6XprbT. Money raised will go towards purchasing a
bank of Tablets to be shared amongst the classrooms.
Why not bake a cake with your child/ren as a school holiday activity?
Whether you assist on the day or not, please consider baking something for the cake stall. All
contributions will be greatly appreciated, but we do know from experience that whole cakes sell
much better than individual goodies. Cakes can be dropped off at the school on Saturday 2 July
from 7.30am. Please consider making arrangements with other parents to drop off your cake, if
you can’t do it on the day, or email the PA at mvps_pa@outlook.com who will be able to assist.
This week’s recipe is:
Sultana Cake
Melted butter, to grease
250g butter, softened
215g (1 cup) caster sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
3 eggs
450g (3 cups) plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
125ml (1/2 cup) milk
385g (2 1/4 cups) sultanas
Butter, to serve
Preheat oven to 170°C. Brush a 9 x 19cm (base measurement) loaf pan with melted butter to
lightly grease. Line the base and 2 opposite sides with non-stick baking paper.
Use an electric beater to beat the butter, sugar and vanilla essence in a medium bowl until pale
and creamy. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition until the mixture is combined.
Sift together the flour and baking powder. Fold half the flour mixture into the butter mixture and
stir in half the milk. Repeat with remaining flour mixture and milk until well combined. Use a metal
spoon to fold in sultanas.
Spoon cake mixture into prepared pan and smooth the surface. Bake in preheated oven for 1 &
1/2 hours or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from oven. Set
aside in the pan for 5 minutes before turning onto a wire rack to cool. Cut into slices and serve
warm or at room temperature with butter, if desired.
Next PA meeting: Monday 11 July 7.30pm in the Staff Room. PA Meeting Minutes available at
the Office.
MVPS Footy Tipping Round 12 Update :
North Melbourne disappoint as do the Blues.
Geelong meanwhile are back winning & looking very good whilst Melbourne
& the Fremantle Dockers also had good wins.
Collingwood will more than likely not play finals this year, whilst realistically
probably only Port Adelaide, Melb & Carlton are the main three outside the 8
that have a chance of breaking into the 8 by years end.
The top tippers for the round were Chucky. Meow & Lambs on the Run who
both tipped 7 in a very difficult week.
Jack Crow, Moyleseeeeeeeeiey, The Barwicks, Jyes Dees, chief, CatsGreatness!, Clackers Tigers, Josh Sheffield & Tiger Mum all did really well
scoring 6 out of 9 !
“Out we come to play” (we understand a parent of a grade 6 student from
last year) are 3 tips clear on top on 82, followed by Chucky (the leading student), Merlin Shmenkle, Moyleseeeeeeeeiey & chief on 79. Girl Power! (the
second placed student) is in 6th on 78 tips whilst Cats-Greatness, Miss F,
Coulda Shoulda Woulda & Mrs Hill (a teacher) round out the top 10 on 7th,
8th, 9th & 10th places.
Our leaderboard after the conclusion of Round 12 is :
1. 82– Out we come to play
2. 79 –Chucky
3. 79 – Merlin Shmenkle
4. 79 – Moyleseeeeeeeeiey
5. 79 - chief
6. 78 – Girl Power!
7. 78 – Cats-Greatness
8. 78 – Miss F
9. 77 – Coulda Shoulda Woulda
10. 77 – Mrs Hill
