Native Americans
recognized this land as a
place of abundant natural
resources. Today, those
rich resources are used
more for recreation than
survival. We enjoy natural
beauty while hiking,
boating, fishing, surfing,
crabbing or canoeing on
the lake. Lincoln City, with its rivers, lake, and ocean
beaches offers a diverse variety of experiences in a
friendly, beautiful environment. I invite you to visit us
at the museum to learn more about the history that
shaped this exceptional city. - Anne Hall, North Lincoln

Finders Keepers
Finders Keepers is an annual promotion, which runs from MidOctober to Memorial Day. More than 2000 hand-crafted glass floats
are placed along the 7-1/2 miles (12 km)
of public beach in Lincoln City each year,
from the Roads End area to the Cutler
City area, some each day if the ocean and
weather permit. You find it, you keep it!
On special occasions announced in
advance, antique Japanese fishing
floats are dropped on the beach in large
quantities. Watch our calendar of events
or sign up for our e-newsletter at www.
oregoncoast.org to learn when and to learn more about the history of
the promotion.

Antique Stores
City Parks (541) 994-2131 | www.lincolncity.org
Antique shops and used book
stores abound in Lincoln City.
Country Home Magazine chose
Lincoln City as one of the ten
best kept “antique” secrets in
the United States.
Canyon Drive Park, SW 11th and Coast Avenue - Includes
restrooms, sitting bench, easy beach access.
Coho Beach Access Park, NW 16th and Harbor
Dorchester Park, NW Neptune and NW 28th Street
Includes picnic tables, restrooms and tennis court.
It may seem curious that Lincoln
City, one of the youngest
communities on the Oregon
coast, would be a good place to find antiques. But in the five historic
neighborhoods which combined in the 1960s to make up the city Delake, Oceanlake, Nelscott, Taft and Cutler City- you’ll find a rich
history and a love of fine old things.

Making It Easier
Stewards of the Sea
Lincoln City is making great efforts to better accommodate our
residents and visitors who have disabilities related to mobility, sight,
or hearing. We understand that
traveling with disabilities can
sometimes be difficult and that
not everyone requires the same
amenities. In addition to making
significant changes in curbs
and sidewalks during our recent
Urban Renewal Projects, we have
invited local businesses to share
with us the amenities they have
to help you in your travels. You will find them and other important
resources, like beach wheel chairs, listed on our website at www.
oregoncoast.org.

We live and play in a stunning corner of
the world, and our residents and visitors
are committed to protecting it as best
we can. Lincoln City has taken great
steps to be responsible and sustainable,
including the following:

Help us protect the environment
while you visit by keeping the

Lincoln City History
Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians
As early as 1572 Sir Francis Drake explored the area, naming it New
Albion. Contact with Native Americans remained undocumented
until 1788, when Robert Haswell,
Captain Robert Gray’s first mate,
wrote in the ship’s log of an
encounter with two native men
in a canoe near the mouth of the
Salmon River.
The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians are an important part of
Lincoln City’s past and present. They are the owners and operators
of the Chinook Winds Casino Resort.
The first recorded tourists came
in August of 1837. In 1855, the
area became part of the Coast
© Philip Burnett Photography
Reservation and still later,
the Siletz Reservation. Homesteaders began arriving soon after
Congress passed the Dawes Act in 1887. Native Americans, as well
as white settlers, first inhabited land along the Siletz River, Siletz Bay
and the Salmon River.
Kernville has the distinction of being the first town in this area.
The Siletz River was a fisherman’s paradise in those early years. By
the early 1920s, however, the numbers of fish were diminishing and
new regulations in 1935 prohibited drift net fishing altogether. The
area then turned to logging for its industry.
In the 1930s area towns competed with other coastal towns to
attract tourists and increase business. Because government
services to these communities, such as fire and police protection,
were needed by all, a long debate ensued as to whether the towns,
some of which had incorporated as cities, should combine. On
March 3, 1965, Cutler City, Taft, Nelscott, Delake, and Oceanlake
incorporated as Lincoln City.
The confederation is composed of many bands and tribes whose
members are the descendents of aboriginal peoples who inhabited
all of Western Oregon from what is now known as Northern California
north to the north shore of the Columbia River in SW Washington
State. These bands and tribes were removed to the Coast or Siletz
Reservation beginning in 1856.
More than a century of struggle
and incredible hardship followed.
In 1977, after years of intense
effort and lobbying, the
Confederated Tribes of Siletz
Indians became the second
tribe in the nation and the first
in Oregon to regain federally
recognized tribal status by a
congressional act. In 1980, a modest land base consisting primarily
of timberlands was re-established as the Siletz Reservation.
With the Tribe’s “restoration” began decades of growth. The Siletz
Tribe now has a strong tribal government to oversee and implement
the many programs and services offered to Tribal members as well
as an expanding variety of job
opportunities.

Indians may be obtained by

Don’t Forget the Family Dog!
Weddings & Reunions
Sometimes you need a vacation,
but there is no one to take care of
the dog. And sometimes the dog
just needs a break too. So bring
your pet to Lincoln City. We have
everything you need to care for
and entertain your pet, while you
get rest and entertainment too! In
fact, we have so much available
for your dog that Lincoln City was
named by Dog Fancy Magazine as
one of the ten top dog-friendly cities in the nation!
Lincoln City is a fun, festive, and
great place to make memories
with family and friends. Because
we want those memories to be
as perfect as you can make
them, the staff at the Visitor &
Convention Bureau stands ready
to help you find the resources
you need for your wedding or
commitment ceremony, family
reunion, or girlfriend weekend.
In addition to the 7 1/2 miles
(12 km) of pristine Lincoln City
beach, try Spring Lake Trail just
west of the Regatta Grounds or
Drift Creek Falls. Most Oceanlake
shops will allow well-behaved
pets on leashes if you ask. And
they are welcome on the Tanger
Outlet grounds as well. Beach
Dog Café and the Nelscott Café
can accommodate your dog while you eat. Remember, keep your
pets on leashes and clean up after them, even on the beach.
And don’t forget the annual Mutt
Masters Dog Show in May, a “for fun”
dog show that raises funds for two
“doggie related” causes annually!
There are a number of places to gather and enjoy each other’s
company or celebrate the occasion, including the Oregon State
beaches and city parks. Some beach or city park gatherings require
advance space reservations and permits from the State or the City.
We’re happy to help you navigate those rules and find the amenities,
locations, group activities,
and other services you need to
make the occasion just right.
If you can’t find what you need
by visiting our website at www.
oregoncoast.org, please call
800-452-2151. During regular
business hours 6 days a week a
real person answers the phone
to help you.

Common Questions
Getting Here and Getting Around
Q: What is the weather doing?
A: You can check the local weather via www.oregoncoast.org (click on
weather button) or www.tripcheck.com
Getting To Lincoln City:
Lincoln City is your beacon for
fun on the Oregon Coast. We’re
sure that no matter how you get
here you’ll want to stay and then
come back again. From Portland
or Salem it’s an easy and scenic
drive through the beautiful
Coastal Mountain Range; and
if you’re already on the Coast,
we’re right on U.S. Highway 101. Drive your own car or take Caravan
Airport Transportation, (541) 994-9645.
Q: Where are the best tide pools?
A: The best tide pools are found at low tide. Some of the favorites
are NW 15th Street beach access; SW 33rd Street (from the
parking area, hike north down the beach to the rocks); Roads End
State Park and the beach access at the Casino (NW 40th Street).
Q: Where can I find a glass float and when is the best time?
A: The Finders Keepers Float season starts in mid-October and
runs through Memorial Day. Volunteers place floats on the beach
during this season, weather permitting. The volunteers are not
assigned any particular area, nor any certain time of day to place
them on the beach. So search well and good luck.
Q: Can we have fires on the beach?
A: Small fires are allowed as long as they are well away from beach
grass and not in drift log piles. Beach fires should always be
extinguished with water and not buried.
Q: Is there clamming or crabbing on the beaches? Where can we
rent equipment?
A: Probably the best clamming and crabbing location is the Siletz
Bay area. Permits can be obtained from Bi-Mart Store (541-9943194) just east of the Tanger Outlet Center or Eleanor’s Undertow
(541-996-3800), located at 869 SW 51st St (Taft Area across
from Mo’s), or Tiki’s at 1005 SW 51st, (541) 996-4200. Eleanor’s
and Tiki’s also have rental equipment.
Q: Where are the whales?
A: Whale watching is year-round entertainment in Lincoln City. Good
places for viewing in the Lincoln City area are Cascade Head, the
Roads End State Park, the bank at NW 21st Street, or from the
dining rooms or rooms of oceanfront restaurants and motels.
Q: Can we camp out on the beach?
A: The answer is NO! It’s too dangerous.
Check out the Oregon Department of Transportation’s website at
www.tripcheck.com for up-to-date traffic information and live shots of
traffic. You can also call for current road conditions at
1-800-977-ODOT (6368).
Getting Around Lincoln City:
No matter how you get here there are plenty of ways to get to our sites,
shops and attractions. You can rent a car or take a cab. If you win big
at Chinook Winds Casino Resort or just like to go in style, consider
a limo! We also have local public transportation for Lincoln County,
including Dial-A-Ride. To find out
more, visit www.co.lincoln.or.us.
Always Temperate:
Lincoln City has a temperate
year-round climate. Although
we have some hot days in the
summer and chilly evenings
in the winter, you can expect
temperatures ranging between
45º (7ºC) and 80º (26ºC). You
never know when it might rain, so make sure you’ve brought some rain
gear; but that doesn’t mean you won’t need sun block in the summer
months. Visit www.lincolncityweather.com
Q: How can we contribute during our stay?
A: Check out the voluntourism opportunities on our website.

The Beach is Our Playground
- But Please Be Safe.
We want you to enjoy all the things
the beach has to offer, but please
be safe. One rule of beach safety is
to stay off logs. Tides and undertow
can make a large log flip or turn
and cause serious injury. So when
on the beach, play it safe - stay
off the logs. Storm watching is
a great beach activity, too.
So when storms approach,
watch as they come across
the sea; but do it from a
safe place.
