There is a new section added to the CE Corner called "Have you ever wondered....." The purpose of this new section is to provide information about the various CE programs here at Covenant and to give everyone an opportunity to ask questions. So, if you have a, "I have always wondered what...." type of question about any of the CE programs here at Covenant, we invite you to write down your question and place it in the "CE Box" in the gathering area. REGISTRATION FORMS IN GATHERING ROOM! -COVENANT YOUTH NEWS— A group of three boys from the Middle School Youth Group will be attending the Middle School Conference at Maryville College in Tennessee, July 23rd - 27th. This is the first time Covenant has taken youth to this conference and we are very excited!" 5 In Memory With thanksgiving to God we celebrate the life of Laurie Anderson, who died on July 8, 2014. Her memorial service will be held at Covenant this Wednesday, July 23, at 12:00 noon. All are welcome. Laurie was born in Kalamazoo, MI, on April 9, 1945, where her father was a businessman in plastics, yet also loved to farm, growing peaches & grapes for Welch’s. She earned a degree in English from Kalamazoo College, with foreign study in Germany, and also did graduate work at the University of MI and UGA. Before working for the Madison Board of Education in WI Laurie had taught secondary English in both MI and WI. On a trans-Atlantic ocean liner Laurie met Jim her husband of 46 years. They moved to Athens in the late 70's and joined Covenant in 1986 where she was active in Presbyterian Women and Church School teaching High School youth and leading Challenge for elementary children on Sunday afternoon. As an ordained Elder, Laurie chaired both the Outreach and Witness Teams, serving the community and the world. Laurie and Jim were supportive of Jubilee Partners from its very beginnings. Working with Northeast GA Presbytery, Laurie was also part of their Justice & Peacemaking Action Team and was especially passionate about a just peace in Palestine. Jim and Laurie enjoyed full participation in the life of the congregation, here almost every time the doors were open, and were faithful members of The Journey Class. Laurie worked fervently to support children, animals, and oppressed people everywhere. She developed a statewide federally-funded program in ND to promote equal opportunities in education. She was co-president of Resolve Atlanta, Board Chair of All God’s Children in Athens, and chaired the Citizen Review Panel in the Athens Juvenile Court to review cases of neglected and abused children in foster care. She also founded and directed the Attachment Network of GA to establish a network of trained therapists to help adopted children in GA develop strong bonds with their adoptive families. Laurie was more than experienced with medical care lifelong, having about 8 major surgeries, yet never defeated by them. She was tough and resilient, assertive yet loving, generous and strong in her faith, joyful in the face of despair - and she will be fondly remembered for her great spirit and big heart, always helping the underdog and righting injustice. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Covenant Presbyterian Church for a special fund in loving memory of Laurie Anderson, to be used for the Witness Team’s Mission Trip Fund. The congregation extends its care & sympathy to Laurie’s husband Jim; their son Byron (Nikki) and granddaughters Elizabeth, Victoria, and Isabella of NV; to her brother Bob (Cheryl) and niece Kristen of ID; and to her sister-in-law Carol Anderson (Archer Christian) of MI. We give thanks to God for the gift Laurie was to us and all in her that was good and kind. 6 Building Relationships and Support- a Covenant women's fellowship group. TerraCycle Statistics Since Covenant joined TerraCycle in March 2012, we have shipped more than 500 pounds of plastic packaging materials which otherwise would have ended up in local landfills. All of this stuff has been recycled in the U.S., which has created jobs for Americans. Also since March 2012, we have earned $245.69. In January 2013, we spent $16.02 for a second set of plastic drawers for collecting the recyclables. Since then, we have spent a total of $92.69 for postage to mail 4 boxes of liner bags from cereal bags. (See last week's Covenanter for an explanation of this expense.) This leaves a balance of $136.98. Since we requested the most recent check from TerraCycle in April, we have earned an additional $42.10. Another box of cereal bags will be shipped soon. 7 The Green Dream Team WEEK OF July 20, 2014 SUNDAY 10:00am Worship 1:30pm Catedral de Fe MONDAY— OFFICE CLOSED 8am Covenant Breakfast Club at Cracker Barrel TUESDAY– Jana & Vera arrive from Olomouc 9:30am Athens Mothers’ Center 7pm Praise Band Rehearsals 7pm Catedral de Fe 8pm New Freedom Group WEEK OF July 27, 2014 SUNDAY 10:00am Worship 1:30pm Catedral de Fe MONDAY— OFFICE CLOSED TUESDAY– 9:30am Athens Mothers’ Center 11:30am Lunch Bunch at DePalma’s Eastside 7pm Catedral de Fe WEDNESDAY— 12 noon Memorial Service for Laurie Anderson 7pm Covenant Coffee House Middle School Conference thru 7/26 in Maryville, TN 8pm New Freedom Group THURSDAY— 2pm Knitters & Knotters 8pm Happy Squares in Fellowship Hall 2pm Knitters & Knotters FRIDAY— 9:30am Athens Mothers’ Center 5:30pm 7:30pm Catedral de Fe 8:00pm New Freedom 9:30am Athens Mothers’ Center THURSDAY— FRIDAY— 7:30pm Catedral de Fe 8:00pm New Freedom SATURDAY– SATURDAY– Fellowship Hall Cleaned Fellowship Hall Cleaned WORSHIP—July 20, 2014 WORSHIP—July 27, 2014 10:00am 10:00am Readers: Jason Green Readers: Colleen Cook Ushers: Ushers: Greeters: Missy Green & Family Greeters: Bert Ballard-Myer, Allisyn & Ross Johnson Piano: Marcia Verbrugge Piano: Betsy Burmeister Counters: Sue Loegel & Paige Campbell Counters: Bill Barstow & Randy Parish Flowers: Juergen Wiegel Flowers: Juergen Wiegel Plant Care: Frank Allen Plant Care: Frank Allen Open the Building: Alan Edwards Open the Building: Jim Bowden Close the Building: Paul Brooks Close the Building: Alex Clark Grounds Steward: Hank Tweedell ( July 21-27) Grounds Steward: John Chamblee ( July 28 thru Aug 03) Nursery/Super: Nursery/Super: 10:00am—Valerie Maples 10:00am—Susan Harper Birth—Walking: Valerie Maples Birth—Walking: Susan Harper Walking—5 years old: Hanna & Gabe Harper, Brian Herndon Walking—5 years old: Barbara Parker, Ben Foutz, Lindsey Bowden 8
