Profiles & Cases
Stewarts Law is recognised globally as one of the leading aviation disaster, serious
injury and fatal accident law firms. We only act for families and victims of air crashes
and not for the insurance companies, unlike all other aviation law firms in the UK.
Aviation claims are handled by James Healy-Pratt (Partner), Sarah Stewart (Partner),
Stuart Dench (Partner) and Jim Morris (Senior Associate) who have specialist knowledge
of international carriage, foreign jurisdiction issues and actual flying knowledge and
experience of light aircraft, helicopters, airliners and fast military jets.
James is Head of Aviation at Stewarts Law, and is qualified as both
an English Solicitor and a New York Attorney. The first 15 years
of James’ career were spent at the heart of the global aviation
insurance market in London, both at Lloyds and Global Aerospace,
where he investigated and resolved aviation crashes worldwide,
including the 9/11 US Terrorist attacks. James decided to move
over to the side of the families and victims of aircrashes in 2006,
confident that his unrivalled knowledge of the aviation insurance
market would do real good for those who have lost most in an aircrash - the families
and victims. This has proved to be true, as many of our clients will happily vouch for
James to represent families and victims worldwide.
James flies helicopters - the Robinson R22 and R44 models, and he is currently
completing his PPL H on a Eurocopter Turbine EC120 helicopter.
James is described by the Legal 500 as ‘one of the leading lawyers in the world in
this area’, The Chambers guide for 2010 describes how aviation insurance market
sources ‘highlight his expertise in achieving multi-million pound settlements across
the globe’.

Stewarts Law currently represents passengers or their families from over 40 countries around the world. The map below
shows the distribution of our clients across the world:
Maryke van der Westhuizen, who lost her husband and father to their 2 year old child in the crash of another Boeing
737-800 on Kenya Airways Flight KQ507 in Cameroon, said this of Stewarts Law:
When my husband died in the Kenya Airways crash on 5 May 2007, my world collapsed. My grief was
compounded by the anxiety I felt for our son’s future. I was scared and depressed. Marco was not even 2
years old at the time of the accident and without his father, not only was our little boy missing his role model
but I was concerned that on my own I would not be able to provide for him like his father had; I would never
be able to give him all the opportunities that his father had promised him. Stewarts Law were sensitive to the
needs of my family, my culture, and provided that financial security that we desperately needed. I no longer
fear for our future and I know that I can help Marco achieve everything that my husband and I had wished
for him. Although Stewarts Law is based in London and me in South Africa, everything was communicated on
time every time and I could not have asked for a better representative. I have been blessed by the help they
have given me in the case against Kenya Airways and the way they are still fighting for us right to the end
with Boeing even when the accident report was released 3 years later with faults.. A big thank you.
