Square will be The Classic
Car Show. Dennis McGill
is coordinator for this
popular exhibit of classic
and antique automobiles.
Last year there were 135
in the show and he
expects this year could
even be higher. Among
the cars, are also
collectors who can be
counted on to show their WWII military vehicles, from Jeeps to
ton-and-a-half trucks.
At the same time younger car buffs will be in the BMO Harris
Bank (formerly M&I) parking lot showing off their sound systems.
It is a 'Sound Breaker' Contest. The winner will not win because
he has the loudest sound, however. Through a complicated
process the owner uses a computer to analyze the integrity of
each sound system through the windshield, testing it for sound
integrity.
Registration opens at 8 A.M. June 8th and the show runs until 3
P.M. Owners will be with their vehicles ready to talk about their
cars and seek your vote for Best in Show.

"What's Up" Downtown Rhinelander
Mainstreet with Maggie

June ...it's summer! The first summer event for Downtown
Rhinelander Inc. is the "Second Saturday in June Car Show"
which is June 8th. Please plan on visiting the downtown not
only to take in the fantastic assortment of classic cars but to
shop and grab a bite to eat. I know you've heard it before,
and not just from our organization, that volunteers are
desperately needed in order for events and really for many

placed. Again, volunteers are needed to water the baskets. If you are an early morning person

Trig's Riverwalk Center &
Trig's Big Store "New Look"

By now most everyone has watched (and
dodged) the workers moving about inside
and out at Trig's Rhinelander store. Steve
Heise tells DRI that the product and aisle
lineup one sees now is pretty much where it
will be when the remodeling is complete.
(Some of the aisles were still restricted to
workers only as this article is written).
Shoppers can expect a greatly enhanced
new Trig's when the project is complete.
Design and new additions will extend beyond Trig's and into the Riverwalk Center. There will be
an enlarged Trig's Florist which will be offering upscale gourmet cooking equipment in addition to
their present merchandise of flowers and gifts. Look for a new addition called "Tone Zone" a new
business with exercise equipment (and more) to help shoppers keep in shape. A Coffee Concept
will open featuring Timber Trails coffee.
It's obvious to people outside the building that major design changes are not limited to the
interior of The Riverwalk Mall. Trig's trademark Northwoods wood trim will be showing up on the
exterior. Shoppers have been pretty good natured, all in all, as they travel from aisle to aisle
trying to find things where they used to be but are no more.
This beautifully designed complex will be a large boost to Rhinelander's Downtown.

Sixth grade students at James Williams Middle School are planning the 4th Annual Amazing
Hodag Quest to businesses in downtown Rhinelander on Tuesday, June 4, 2013.
JWMS staff are looking for downtown businesses to be a part of this fun and educational
experience which begins at 9:00 am, and should be completed by 11:30 am.

4th of July Parade
Now is the time to enter Rhinelander's 4th of July parade.
This year's theme is celebrating the 200th year of UNCLE SAM.
What an inexpensive way to promote your business in front of hundreds of spectators.
So get creative. Ask your employees for ideas AND help with your entry. But first
contact the parade official, Dale Schlieve, at 715-369-1814 to enter your business.

Amazing Enthusiasm
The potatofest is really rolling now we have committees
working on kids activities, on entertainment, on concessions, on grounds and logistics, things are
really starting to take form. A giant "way to go team" is in order for everyone who is working so
hard to organize this first year event. Plan to attend Saturday August 31st, or better yet,
plan to help for a couple of hours.
We need some help in advance with some mailings, we will be needing a couple of crossing
guards the day of the event, the day before and the day after the event we will be setting up the
grounds, putting up tents and fencing etc. perhaps you and couple of friends could plan to help
bartend or serve food while listening to the music, or if you like children, you could help at the
face painting station, or any of the other activities that are being planned.
Save the date and be a part of a new Rhinelander tradition.
Fashion Show
Art Start is busy planning the August 19th Fashion show to benefit ArtStart. They
have a great lineup for the fashion show with these downtown businesses among the
ones participating (Lattitude's, Lund & Taylor, and Mel's).
Buy Local and ArtStart are the fashion show themes.
Volunteer Opportunities
Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. is here to promote and help the downtown. This can be

accomplished with the help of you-the community.
Do you have an hour or two each month? Your volunteerism would be appreciated.

We are meeting with the prospective groups who would be working on the grant planning
for the streetscape project.
Our flower baskets have been a main project - planting them, finding sponsors, locating
someone to water them each day, and keeping the Plaza and the "green" space
presentable.

The ER Committee and others met on May 29, with "I Buy Local" participating businesses
to evaluate our first year efforts and to plan for year number
The first annual "Downtown Available Property Open House was held on May 18, and was
considered a success with plans to continue this event next year.
Downtown promotional advertising will continue on Independent Public Radio Station
WXPR.
The ER Committee continues to work on its June 30-December 31 budget along with
developing details for the Outcome Based Measurements for its 2013-2014 Goals.

Celebration which was held May 23rd at the DRI office, recognizing and recruiting
volunteers. Participants enjoyed lunch and visited DRI's four committee representatives to
learn more about volunteer opportunities. Committee members Sally Latimer, Melanie
Ostermann, and Tina Werres organized this event
Linda Havel was the winner in the drawing.
Recruiting volunteers for DRI's events is an ongoing important aspect of the Organization
Committee and we are continually working to make available to DRI events our volunteer
resources.
The Classic Car Show June 8th is still in need of volunteers as is the Potato Fest August
31st which our committee is in charge of getting volunteers

The committee is immersed in our first annual Potato Fest which takes place Saturday,

August 31st, of Labor Day Weekend.

Meet the DRI Board of Directors
Each month a board member will be featured.
One of the original board members of DRI is Mel Davidson who
started as a regular voting board member and is now an Ex Officio
board member. Still attending meetings he shares his expertise and
advice. He can always be counted on to help with events through the
years.
Mel grew up on a farm near Lincoln, Nebraska. After two years of
college in pre-engineering he joined the army and was sent to
Mel Davidson
Munich, Germany. After the army he returned to college and upon
graduation with a degree in financing and marketing, was offered a job with American Can
Company. He worked in Boise Idaho, San Francisco, Greenwich, Conn., and Chicago with a
promotion moving him to each new location. In 1983 Mel moved with his family to Rhinelander
as VP in Sales and Marketing at Rhinelander Paper Company until he retired in 1995. He then
worked with Smith Barney from 1996-2004 as a security broker.
Mel has interesting stories of his work with packaging in the food industry, having helped with
the packaging for McDonald's French fries in the 1960s.
Traveling a great deal in his work as sales manager he has worked with people from many
countries. A traveler at heart, he now travels for pleasure with his wife, Linda
Mel has taken time to support local nonprofit organizations, where he is or has been on the
board and often times serving as president - Rhinelander Area Scholarship Fund, the former
Teen Center, OCEDC, YMCA, Grow North, RAFP, Entrepreneur's Club, Treehaven, Leadership
Oneida County, and St. Mary's Hospital Foundation.
Mel fills his spare time as an active investor (which he thoroughly enjoys yet), traveling, golfing,
boating, photography, planting flowers and some fishing. He enjoys many different sports, and
is a dedicated fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In high school he played on a 6 man football
team but in college he was on an 11 man team, also playing while in the army in Germany.
Mel is and always has been a strong supporter of downtown Rhinelander having spearheaded
the Hodags on Parade concept. "Downtown Rhinelander has a lot to offer. I'm excited to
see Rhinelander part of the Main Street program as it is vitally important to the
downtown's future." He wants to stay with and support Downtown Rhinelander, Inc.

Artist of the Month Series
"Artist of the Month" in June will be Barb Pratt
Barb Pratt has been studying drawing and painting for a numbers of years taking classes from
Richard Marko and Bob Kanyusik. Barb uses oil occasionally, but enjoys watercolor and and most
recently she enjoys creating tissue collages. With that she paints tissues in various colors and
then tears the paper and applies it to her art.
Meet and Greet" for Barb Pratt is June 13th, 5 -7 pm. Stop in, meet Barb, & see her
beautiful artwork.
