San Pedro is Los Angeles’ Waterfront. And over the past several decades it has been transformed from a heavy industrial zone to a beautiful area with recreational, artistic, and historical opportunities. The LA Waterfront is home to the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Terminal, the finest facility of its type on the West Coast. Fanfare Fountain at the edge of the Cruise Terminal and top of the Waterfront Promenade produces daily choreographed light, music, and water shows. The Promenade provides a park-like setting with benches, a wide path for biking or strolling or running, fountains that rise from the ground, and public art. A new Downtown Harbor along the Promenade offers a convenient place to stroll, have events, or berth your boat for a visit. Our historic Downtown preserves architecture from the turn of the last century through more modernist styles with quaint shops, restaurants, old-style bars, and lots of theater and art. And on the First Thursday evening of every month you can get a behind-the-scenes look at the studios when the town holds its Art Walk. Head south toward the Pacific Ocean and you’ll find Angels Gate Park with a cultural center where there are more working artists and many exhibitions and events. Adjacent to the cultural center is the Ft. MacArthur Museum. And right next door is the Korean Bell of Friendship, a gift from the Korean people for the U.S. Bicentennial that is one of the most beautiful spots for photos. Nearby is the Marine Mammal Care Center, a specialized facility that nurses sick and injured pinnipeds, like sea lions, back to health. And all that is just a little bit of what we have to offer. You’ll just have to come see for yourself. You can find all the information you need to plan your visit at our website, SanPedroTourist.net. And if you still have questions, give us a call at 310-729-9828 or email us at VisitSP@SPCVB. SPV San Pedro Visitor March, 2016 3 From Harbor Cruises to Whale Watching to Corporate Events IN MANY WAYS, THE PACIFIC OCEAN IS Southern California’s playground. It offers residents and visitors plenty of recreational opportunities. For others, though, it’s a day’s work, with two mighty harbors that bring in nearly half of the nation’s imports. And the commerce of the water—the ports, the commercial fishing—is fascinating. The undisputed leader in waterfront cruises and tours in Los Angeles and Long Beach is Spirit Cruises. It operates four different yachts, each with a distinct style, to serve nearly every need or interest. It operates four vessels ranging from 65 feet to 100 feet and from 75 to 275 passengers. Spirit is known for its daily harbor cruises that offer an up-close look at the big ships of facilities of the Port of Los Angeles. These informative tours depart from Ports O’ Call Village. One, one-and-a-half, and two-hour tours are available of Los Angeles, Long Beach, or both harbors. The cruises always see sea lions and many other types of sea life up close and in their environment. And with the line-up of vessels it has available, Spirit is also a leading charter and party boat company. Its team has put together packages that make the process of planning and booking easy—along with ensuring tasty and attractive meals on board for lunch, dinner, and cocktail events. Continued on next page … The Best Way to See the Greatest Animals on Earth DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE to see the Pacific grey whales as they migrate along the California coast. And the very best way is with a whale watching cruise with Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Each boat is staffed by a trained naturalist from Cabrillo Whalewatch, a joint effort of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the American Cetacean Society/Los Angeles Chapter. These are the real experts. It uses hands-on experiences at sea to provide an array of social, education, and leadership development opportunities to middle school and high school students in San Pedro and Wilmington, and throughout the greater Los Angeles area. San Pedro Visitor March, 2016 The TopSail Youth Program is offered year-round aboard the Tall Ships Exy Johnson and Irving Johnson, 110-foot traditionally rigged wooden vessels named after Adventure Learning pioneers who sailed around the world seven times with young crews. The vessels and their crews were proclaimed the “Official Tall Ships and Maritime Ambassadors of the City of Los Angeles” at their launch in 2002. And LAMI also offers a range of programs to appeal to nearly everyone on its twin brigantines. There’s a youth camp beginning on March 21. Throughout the year LAMI conducts Sunset Sails with potluck dinners with the opportunity to pull a line while out on a cruise in the harbor at the most beautiful time of the day. (There is one coming up on March 26.) 5 The ships are also available for corporate events, such as team-building voyages. The area’s many attractions are a freeway drive away or can be reached on public transportation. Hollywood, Universal Studios, Downtown Los Angeles and its historic districts and shopping, Orange County and its attractions including Disneyland and 12 Knott’s Berry Farm are all accessible and make for great day trips. Catalina Island can be reached directly on Catalina Express from San Pedro. Take a look at the Getting Around page on the San Pedro Tourist website. And the San Pedro Visitors Center is glad to help you plan your tours, arrange for transportation, or for guided tours. Email the staff tours@spcvb.com Here’s Information that’s helpful to passengers coming to San Pedro. Roadway closure The transition from the Long Beach (Interstate 710) Freeway to the Gerald Desmond Bridge has been permanently closed and will not be replaced for about two and a half years while a new bridge is constructed. If coming to the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Terminal, take an alternate route. The Harbor (Interstate 110) Freeway comes directly to San Pedro and the Port. For information about traffic affected by the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement construction check our special page by clicking here. Outstanding Beer, Food, Sports, People ASK A DOZEN PEOPLE WHAT MAKES San Pedro Brewing Company so outstanding and you’re likely to get 12 different answers: “The beer,” “the food,” “the staff,” “the atmosphere,” “the entertainment,” and the list goes on. Ask 12 locals what sets the BrewCo apart and you’ll get one answer: owner James Brown. (Some call him, “James Bruin” because he may just be UCLA’s biggest fan.) Brown started with a vision for what he wanted to accomplish with the Brewing Company and over the course of more than 15 years has built a team that seems like a family, a business that is welcoming and supports the community, and a reputation for good food and drink at fair prices—and some of the best catering in Southern California. The great beer at San Pedro Brewing Company happens because of great ingredients and great skill. The outstanding food is from great ingredients and lots of kitchen talent. The atmosphere, that's because the BrewCo attracts fun folks. It's an experience to drink and dine at the San Pedro Brewing Company. Take the tour on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. to see how the awardwinning beers are made. Enjoy “Hoppy Hour” Monday through Friday from 2-6 p.m. with great prices. Got a special event?
