SUMMER MAY BE WINDING DOWN with schools starting earlier
nowadays, but there’s still time to do lots of fun (and educational)
things all around the area. And these are year-round activities, so you
can combine fun and learning. Read about it on page 12.
Plus, there will be live bands, fire dancers, street performers and
other entertainment throughout the evening. Co-headliners are
L.A.vation & Street Corner Renaissance.
Regular and VIP tickets are available, along with craft beer, wine,
and spirits by the glass.
SAN PEDRO’S BIGGEST EVENT—FLEET WEEK—RETURNS, THIS TIME OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND. And organizers
are promising that it will bigger and better than ever. There will be free tours of Navy ships that will be in
port for the event, entertainment, a veterans’ village, and more. This issue we cover some of the Navy’s great
history in San Pedro. You’ll find the whole Fleet Week schedule on page 5.
ANOTHER BIG EVENT COMING UP is Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Shark
Week which runs from Sunday, August 7 to Saturday, August 13.
You’ll find a variety of programs every day between noon and 4 p.m.
during Shark Week that explore these fascinating creatures.
In the Exploration Center you can check out amazing shark
specimens like real shark skin, shark teeth, and shark egg cases. Plus
you can create your very own shark egg case. If you’re up for a
challenge, stop by the blue tent in the courtyard and pick up a Shark
Fact Scavenger Hunts. Complete the scavenger Hunt and receive a
cool Shark Week surprise.

SOMETHING THAT’S ALWAYS GREAT FUN is the Los Angeles Maritime
Institute’s Family Sunset Sail. You sail on a traditionally rigged tall
ship from a bygone era, exploring the ocean, our world’s largest
wilderness.
And if you want to really be adventurous, you’ll get an opportunity
to help the crew haul lines.
There’s a sailing set for Saturday, August 20 and another for
Saturday, September 17. The ship leaves the dock at 5 p.m. with
boarding beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Berth 78 in Ports O’ Call Village on
the LA Waterfront. For information, contact Los Angeles Maritime
Institute, 310-833-6055, www.LAMITopSail.org.
CANDI SOSA IS A REMARKABLE TALENT whose repertoire includes
Cuban classic, Brazilian standards, Argentine tangos, great French
ballads, jazz, and even Broadway tunes.
She’s played the intimate environment of Beach City Grill to great
reviews and she’ll be joined by Cristina Rebull at Alvas Showroom on
Saturday, September 24 starting at 8 p.m.. Their previous engagement
there sold out.

Dating back before the Civil War, the port has hosted
U.S. Navy vessels and sailors in war and peace
AS
LA
FLEET WEEK 2016
APPROACHES this Labor Day
weekend, the tradition of San
Pedro as a “Navy Town” renews
itself.
Los Angeles has a long history with the
United States Navy—dating from even
before California became a state.
On October 7, 1846, the frigate USS
Savannah arrived to try to recapture Los
Angeles from the Californios.
An expedition set out from the ship at San
Pedro headed for the Los Angeles pueblo.
That expeditionary group encountered the
opposition on the Dominguez Rancho, about
10 miles north of San Pedro and they fought
the Battle of Dominguez Rancho, also known
as the Battle of Old Woman’s Gun.
“Old Woman’s Gun” was a brass cannon
that belonged to Inocencia Reyes, a
Dominguez family daughter-in-law. The
local forces had retrieved it from her garden
where it was used as a decoration and
cleaned the mud off it, firing it several times
during the battle and killing five U.S. service
members.
THE NAVY’S ARRIVAL WAS MORE AUSPICIOUS
in April, 1908 when the Great White Fleet
dropped anchor in the harbor.
The voyage of the Great White Fleet was
billed as a goodwill tour that was the idea of
President Theodore Roosevelt. In fact, it was
a means of showing off to the world the
U.S.’s naval might.
Thousands of people turned out,
overwhelming the mass transit system,
according to The Daily Mirror, a Los Angeles
Times blog. They were arriving at 2 a.m. to
wait for the first cars to take them south to
San Pedro to see the ships.
But passengers who went to the Pacific
Electric Depot planning to ride from
downtown to San Pedro found all cars
jammed with others who wanted to see the
ships. Trains were running up to three-anda-half hours late.
And in those early days of the automobile,
each that was available was loaded with at
least 10 people heading to see the fleet.
It was rough even if they were able to get
close enough to see the ships, too. At least 40
people plunged 20 feet down a hillside
around Sunken City next to Pt. Fermin Park
when the cliff gave way under the weight of
the crowds looking at the ships in the harbor
below.
The fleet itself arrived dramatically, 16
ships spread out in a line three-and-a-half
miles long. When the flagship, USS
Connecticut, set its anchor, the battleships
arrived, arraying the fleet in a huge
triangular formation.
IN THE EARLY YEARS OF THE LAST CENTURY
Navy ships would also arrive fairly regularly
for repairs and resupply or for liberty calls.
In 1919 President Wilson sent a fleet of 200
ships to the Pacific as a show of U.S. strength
in answer to Japan’s rising power in the
region. Battleships and destroyers arrived in
San Pedro in August that year for supplies
and minor repairs and to give the sailors
liberty.
In February, 1933 the frigate USS
Constitution, now the oldest commissioned
warship in the world, arrived in San Pedro
for a month-long visit.
Continued on next page…
Proud Navy History…
…Continued from previous page
The day before the Constitution sailed, 14
battleships, 14 cruisers, 16 support vessels,
and two aircraft carriers arrived to be
homeported in San Pedro from the Atlantic
Fleet. The Navy Landing on 22nd Street was
remodeled to accommodate the newly
arrived ships.
ON APRIL 1, 1940, THE FLEET’S BATTLESHIPS set
sail for Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for annual
exercises. With tensions high in the Pacific,
they stayed there rather than returning to
San Pedro. On December 7, 1941 the fleet
was attacked by Japanese planes and World
War II began for the United States.
Navy ships didn’t just visit San Pedro,
though. Many originated here. In particular,
Todd Shipyard was responsible for building
a number of Naval vessels, especially
frigates.
The first Navy ship built at the yard,
which was located where Berth 100 is now,
was a repair ship named Ajax. The ship was
delivered October 30, 1943 and was in
service until 1997, when it was scrapped.
(Fifty-four years is a long career for a ship.)
Todd also built the last Oliver Hazard
Perry class frigate, the USS Ingraham (Naval
designation FFG-61). The keel was laid in
1987 and the ship was delivered in August,
NAVY SHIP IN PORT—The USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108), an Arley Burke-class guided missile
destroyer, is among the vessels that have visited the Port of Los Angeles at San Pedro in
recent years. Ships are scheduled for port visits during Fleet Week over the Labor Day
weekend and will be open for public tours. There will also be many activities for the ships’
sailors and officers during the event. The blue lights of the Vincent Thomas Bridge are visible
in the background.
1989. It would be the last built at the Todd
Shipyard. And it was the last frigate of that
class built and the last frigate in U.S. service
when it was retired.
AND SAN PEDRO IS NOW THE HOMEPORT of
Battleship Iowa, BB61, “the Battleship of
Presidents.”
OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS SAN PEDRO
has hosted a number of Navy ships and
thousands of sailors during the Navy Days
events. The largest was in 2011 when tens
of thousands of people were attracted to see
the USS Abraham Lincoln, along with other
vessels.
Not only has Navy Days been an
opportunity for citizens to see their Navy
vessels up close, it’s also been an
opportunity to meet and honor the
personnel who keep the ships running and
the systems operating.
This Labor Day weekend the public will
get a chance to see more Navy ships in San
Pedro when Fleet Week returns and the
visiting vessels are open for public tours.
There will be other activities for the event.
Most events will take place around the
Iowa and World Cruise Terminal, where
three Navy ships are set to be berthed. (See
the schedule of events below.)

USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN—The aircraft carrier visited in the Outer Harbor during Navy Days
2011 and was the catalyst to draw tens of thousands of visitors to San Pedro. This year the
Fleet Week ships are scheduled to be berthed at the World Cruise Terminal along the LA
Waterfront off Swinford Street and Harbor Blvd. Advance tickets or reservations will be
required, Visitors will also have to conform to attire regulations that include closed toe
shoes. In addition to ship visits, there will be many other activities, especially for sailors
and officers from the visiting ships. Check the Fleet Week web site for details.

RIP, Octobus and Crab Cab;
May Worthy Replacements
Have Long and Useful Lives
CABRILLO MARINE AQUARIUM is working to
replace its Octobus, which traveled more than
120,000 and transported some 130,000 students
across Los Angeles to learn about the ocean
and sea life. Now, unfortunately, the Crab Cab,
also used to transport students, is soon
heading to recycling.
So the Aquarium needs to raise funds to
purchase two vehicles so that the team of
educators there can continue to share the
magic of marine life with school children.
The replacement fund needs an additional
$42,000 to replace the vans before school starts.
To donate, visit the Cabrillo Marine
Aquarium web site and click on the Support
tab.

But it’s not the only place to learn
SUMMER VACATION IS OVER (OR SOON WILL BE) FOR MANY STUDENTS. But that doesn’t mean the fun needs to
end. And what’s more, around the San Pedro area, fun and learning can come together at attractions and
events. Learning can be fun and the fun can be educational.
FLEET WEEK LA 2016, for example, will
include a STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Math) Expo over the Labor Day
weekend.
The expo will be located in the big blue tentlike structure just north of Battleship Iowa (and
that’s also where ticket holders will line up to
wait for the designated time to take a tour on
one of the Navy ships that will be visiting for
the event).
There are to be dozens of displays, booths,
and activities for all ages at the Fleet Week
STEM expo. For information, check the LA
Fleet Week website.
Here are some of the ongoing activities and
attractions for children and families:

THE LOS ANGELES WORLD CRUISE Center is convenient to get
to from all of Southern California.
Whether arriving on the southbound 110 Harbor Freeway
or northbound State Route 47, exit at Harbor Blvd. and
proceed straight across Harbor onto Swinford Street.
Turn right into the cruise terminal parking lot. You can
also follow this road straight ahead to access the passenger
and luggage drop-off area on the lower levels.
The terminal is comprised of two buildings. Berths 91 and
92 are along the east side of the facility and Berth 93 is on
the north. There is plenty of parking at the terminal.
When the port hosts three large ships, two are berthed at
the Cruise Terminal and one will be berthed at the Outer
Harbor or at the Fruit Terminal. To reach the Outer Harbor,
nd
follow Harbor Blvd. south past 22
Street (where it
becomes Miner Street) and continue on to the end. The
nd
Fruit Terminal is located on 22 Street just east of Harbor
Blvd.
Restaurant Profile
The ‘Happy’ Dine-asty
Happy Diner the original and #2 plus now Happy Deli
IT MAY BE TOO EARLY to call Happy Diner a dynasty, but the way this family business has been growing, the
description seems apt.
Happy Diner started out at its original
location at 617 S. Centre Street five years ago,
resurrecting a much-loved name and creating a
menu that is both familiar and exciting.
Through a lot of hard work, Roman Carrillo
and family built a big following.
And to meet customer demand, Happy
Diner expanded to a new location, Happy
Diner #2, at 1931 N. Gaffey Street in
Northwest San Pedro.
THEN THIS YEAR HAPPY DELI OPENED at 530 S.
Gaffey Street.
At the two Happy Diners you’ll find an
array of traditional diner offerings, including
great big breakfasts that include truly creative
touches, many with Mexican food flair. The
sausage is a local favorite. And the bacon is
crisp and never greasy—
yes, Roman has a secret
to its preparation.
There’s also an array of
sandwiches you’d expect
at a diner like a club, BLT,
and tuna melt among a
dozen choices, all made
with
high
quality
ingredients. And for
good measure Happy
Diner also serves a
fajita steak sandwich.
All sandwiches come
with fries or onion
rings.
You’ll
also
find
steaks,
chops,
and
hearty dinners. There
are 17 burger choices
and an array of salads.
The new Happy Deli also offers breakfast on
a lighter scale, along with outstanding
submarine sandwiches, salads, and more.
The breakfast bagel has been getting great
reviews from locals. It’s two scrambled eggs,
back and ham, tomatoes, and cheese on a
bagel. Happy Deli also offers the Diners’
breakfast sandwich, a big hit with the same
ingredients, but on wonderful toast.
This happy family of restaurants has a
motto, “Once you have it … You’ll love it!”
It’s true. Once you try this food, prepared
with care and affection and supervised at each
location, you’ll feel like you’ve found a new
culinary home.
You will love it.
