The year 1951 forever changed Ohio State football when one simple, but complex, man
became the coach.
Jeff Hall’s uncanny performance as the legendary OSU football coach Woody Hayes has
earned standing ovations and evoked laughter, tears and cheers. Set initially in the
mid-1970s but spanning the coach’s life, the one-man play is framed by a Hayes lecture
— complete with a desk, chalkboard and lectern — and delivers multiple messages;
how to be a success in life, take personal responsibility, understand the importance of
education, hard work and paying forward…things everyone should learn regardless of
age, gender or team allegiance.
“You don’t have to care about football,” said Walt Adamkosky, (1973 OSU graduate) who
wrote, directed and produced the show. “Woody was about developing young men. He
was a teacher first and foremost. His medium was football.”
To compile the script, Adamkosky interviewed former Buckeye players like John Hicks
and Archie Griffin, as well as coaches, friends and relatives that Hayes effected over
the years.
“We show the warts and all,” Adamkosky said. “God knows he wasn’t perfect. We show
the good, the bad, and the ugly of Coach Hayes, but that’s what he was.”

The boys are back
RAT PACK SHOW
and they are SMOKIN’ in the HOTTEST new Rat Pack Season Yet!

Hackett’s Rat Pack Show takes audiences back
to the 1960s when Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin,
Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop, known as the
Rat Pack, ruled the Las Vegas Strip. They were
style with substance, swing with swagger, and a
non-stop party that everyone wanted to access.
Each “Pack” member had his own style, was very
talented in his own way and each had incredible
stage presence. But, put them on stage together
and magically they became “The Rat Pack” with
an energy, style and even bigger stage presence.
This acclaimed theatrical production beautifully
pays homage to the Rat Pack, the era from which
they came, the music they played and the smokefilled lounges they performed in.
The loose plot of the show opens with God
(recorded by legendary comedian Buddy Hackett
before his death) sending the Rat Pack to earth
for one last show. A 6-piece band will play as
the core four – creator Hackett as Bishop, Tony
Basile as Martin, Dezmond Meeks as Davis Jr.
and Danny Grewen as Sinatra - back in their
prime and performing modern day on the Palace
Theatre stage.
Audiences will enjoy two acts of great
arrangements of the classic songs everyone loves
including “That’s Amore,” “For Once in My Life,”
“Luck Be a Lady,” and “Mack the Knife.”
In addition, audiences will hear original, neverbefore-heard songs written by the late, legendary
songwriter, Ron Miller father of Lisa Dawn Miller,
who portrays “Frank’s One Love” in act two.

In the director’s chair, or any chair at the Palace for
that matter, there is never a dull moment. This is
one incredibly busy place. We love it that way and
wouldn’t do things any differently.

made up of board and community members, have
been hard at work to assure that this project moves
forward.
On a particularly busy day, as the revolving door of
activity kept spinning, I found myself wondering how
many days a year we have something going on at the
Palace Theatre. Veronica, the keeper of all Palace
related numbers, calculated how many days we
actually used the theatre during the 2012-13 season.
Incredibly, that number is 315 out of 365 days…and
some days there were multiple uses! Believe me when
I say that statistic leaves no time for dull. What an
incredible resource this facility is to our community
and its people.
By the time you receive this newsletter, the
deconstruction phase (as I lovingly refer to it) should
be underway. Thanks to the generosity and support
of the Palace Theatre Perpetual Care Fund (previously
known as the Palace Theatre Endowment Fund, Inc.)
and a gift from the Marion Community Foundation,
the costs of this phase of the project are covered.
That is a huge relief, and we are so very grateful for
that support!
Thinking about all the activity here brings my
mind around to our restoration project out front –
truthfully, everything brings my mind around to the
project these days. It is a big project and has the
potential to threaten the history and the future of
this building, if left unattended.
But, the Palace is fortunate to have a board of
directors who individually and collectively value
this facility and its purpose. As a result, they have
taken the restoration project and its importance to
heart. Specifically two committees, the restoration
committee and restoration fundraising committee

“But what of the RE-construction phase?” you might
be asking, and I’m so glad you did! John Keggan, a
member of the original Palace Guard who saved
the theatre back in 1976 and a current PCAA board
member, has agreed to serve as chair of the restoration
campaign. John has a lifelong love for the Palace.
He, along with a host of committees and committee
members, is hard at work laying the groundwork for
our fund raising efforts. I hope you’ll react with a
resounding, “What can I do to secure the future of the
Palace?” when the time comes.
In the meantime, the day-to-day operation of the
Palace Theatre continues…or as they say in show biz,
“the show must go on.”
It seems a crazy thing that we have
had only 2 of our 24 live events so far
this season, and we’re already off and
running, planning our 2014-15 season.
By the time you read this, I will have
been to Austin for our annual Arts
Midwest Conference. This is where
the fun begins!
Even as I’m writing this for our 2013 Sep/Oct
Applause, I am receiving dozens of emails daily and
stacks of post cards, brochures, and letters in the mail
all detailing the selling points of various performers,
bands, and entertainment options for this time next
year. The agents are quick to tell me why we want
their artists to play our theatre.
While I’m sure much of what they’re telling me
is true, I’d much rather hear from you, our Palace
patrons. Who or what would you like to see on stage
at the Palace or in the May Pavilion for the 2014-15
season? If we can’t book your specific act, maybe we
can find someone in that same style – 70s music, doo
wop, country, etc. You can email me your ideas at
bev@marionpalace.org.

A SCHOOL MATINEE
PARTY IN THE MAY PAVILION!
KENSINGTON PARK is a duo of acoustic sound. The ‘unplugged’ interpretation
of classic hits presented by Kensington Park has become a listening favorite
for many in the Central Ohio area. Guitarist Andy Kerr and mandolinist Vaughn
Sizemore bring together an appreciation for some of the most popular songs from
the 1960 to today with a unique blend of stringed instrumentation. Featuring
such bands and artists as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, James Taylor, Buffalo
Springfield, Foo Fighters, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Pink Floyd and others,
Kensington Park skips through the pop music landscape with fresh arrangements,
while addressing an occasional classical piece as well.
Andy Kerr is known to many for his lead guitar work with regional rock and roll
acts such as Roundtree and As Is. Opening for bands such as Men at Work and
Living Color Andy has performed and recorded for 20 years.
Vaughn Sizemore has been performing since the age of fifteen. During the
seventies and eighties as a bluegrass musician, Vaughn opened for numerous acts
such as Bill Monroe, Eddie Rabbitt, Dr. Ralph Stanley, J.D. Crowe, New Grass
Revival, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver to name a few.
Kensington Park will perform such Beatles classics as Norwegian Wood, Yesterday,
Michelle, Here Comes the Sun, The Rolling Stones hits Paint it Black and
Satisfaction, James Taylor’s Carolina in My Mind, Fire and Rain and Something in
the Way She Moves to name just a few.
Andy and Vaughn also perform with the classic rock act The
Radio Pirates who will perform February 2014 in the May

Everyone knows that Mrs.
Granger, the language arts
teacher, has X-ray vision in her
classroom. She’s also a fanatic
about the dictionary, which is
hopelessly boring to one of
her students Nicholas Allen.
But when Nick learns an interesting tidbit about words
and where they come from, it inspires him to invent a
new word. From now on, a pen is no longer a pen—it’s
a FRINDLE. Based on the multiple award-winning, bestselling novel by Andrew Clements this quirky, imaginative
tale about creative thought and the power of words
will have young audience members inventing their own
words. Clements’ story is brought to life on the Palace
stage by professional actors from The Griffin Theatre
Co. This show is open to the public and appropriate for
children in
grades 3-6.

HARVEY
Director Greg Patterson brings a dose of comedy to the May Pavilion
“Harvey” is a lighthearted comedy set in 1944. It features the eccentric and lovable Elwood P. Dowd
and his best friend -- a mischievous six-and-a-half foot invisible rabbit named Harvey. The play’s
setting alternates between the majestic home belonging to Elwood and his high-society sister Veta and
the sterile reception room at a sanatorium. This whimsical production includes a lively cast of twelve
characters who add excitement, drama and humor to the production. “Harvey” is a fun play for the
entire family and is recommended for ages 12 years and up.
The Marion Palace Theatre production cast includes Brad Bebout as the charming Elwood P. Dowd.

stage. All acts and ages
will be considered for
this family-friendly
holiday show. The
production traditionally
includes a variety of
community members in
choirs, dance numbers,
instrumental ensembles
and light-hearted, yet
touching, scenes of the
season. An accompanist
will be provided for
vocal auditions. CD’s
are permitted. Those
auditioning should
enter through the May
Pavilion. Performance
dates are December
6 & 7 @ 7:30pm and
December 8 @ 2pm.
