Eco Expo is sponsored by businesses and area communities of faith. It is open to the public, and, as always, there is no admission fee. Over 60 exhibitors and more than 600 attendees spent last year’s Eco Expo immersed in positive things we can do for the environment. Temple member Ken Levi has been to every Eco Expo and has watched it grow to become such an outstanding event. “Eco Expo personifies the community and what we are all about. The exhibitors all have to do with making the world a better place,” he said. If your business has an environmental aspect that you want to promote, or if you’d like more information, contact Linda Kaplan at TIMemphisEcoExpo@msn.com. TIMEMPHIS.ORG | FACEBOOK.COM/TEMPLEISRAEL | TWITTER: @TIMEMPHIS BETWEEN YOU AND ME Why is it important to consider a Jewish perspective when we talk about ethics? Because Jewish texts offer great wisdom on everyday life questions of right and wrong – in our homes, our work, and our community. Jewish tradition can serve as a light for us as we navigate our way into 2014. I led the first session in our series on “Jewish Responses to Ethical Dilemmas” in October on “Truth and Lying: When Is It Wrong To Tell the Truth?” which was followed by Rabbi Bauman’s teaching on “Privacy in A Wired Rabbi Greenstein World.” If you missed these, you can still attend, online, this month’s session on business ethics with Rabbi Grossman, and future sessions with me and Rabbi Danziger on ethical dilemmas relating to family and tzedakah. Pride in our past is a given. The opportunity we have as modern Jews is applying Jewish principles and values to our personal decision-making. When the Jerusalem Talmud (Peah 1:1) contends, for instance, that “to honor parents is more important even than to honor God,” what about today’s tensions from outside forces that were less prevalent when you or your parents were growing up? Families are spending LESS time with competing demands on children and grandchildren’s time, and the new world is one where both parents are part of the workforce outside the home. When it comes to health, Maimonides said, “Exercise removes the harm caused by most bad habits.” The underlying principle is that God owns people’s bodies and that we are therefore obligated to take care of ourselves as best we can. According to Jewish law, “a Jew may not live in a city where there is no physician (Jerusalem Talmud 66d).” Maybe that is why there are a disproportionate number of Jewish doctors! Most of us recycle, but taking care of the environment and not wasting resources goes back to the Torah itself! “Your welfare depends on the land as much as it depends on the welfare of the land,” is not a contemporary bumper sticker; it’s Deuteronomy, 11:13-17! Wednesday evening, January 15, is the Jewish New Year for Trees known as Tu B’Shevat. The moon will be full, but are we giving full thought to what we waste, how we over “work” the earth, and how we are taking care of God’s world and preserving it as best we can for all the generations to come? The Eco-Expo is a wonderful and enlightening event held in January in recent years, but what about the other 364 days of the year caring for the earth? Believe it or not, Judaism even has something to say about good manners. Derech eretz refers to a code of proper behavior toward people, from etiquette and common courtesy to decency and decorum. And compassion undergirds it all, from visiting the sick and taking care of the dead, being there for the forgotten members of our community. Judaism is truly a guidepost for day-to-day living, and the start of a new secular year seems a good time to remember how the teachings of our faith and heritage resonate with our own personal values and hopes for ourselves and our families. Faithfully yours, Rabbi Micah D. Greenstein - 2- TIMEMPHIS.ORG | FACEBOOK.COM/TEMPLEISRAEL | TWITTER: @TIMEMPHIS TAKE ROOT: LIFELONG LEARNING Please see the back cover for an extended description. ANCIENT JEWISH MAGIC: TORAH, TALMUD, AND TODAY?!? Sunday, January 12, 9:15 am From the hilarious scene concerning a witch “who got bett’r” in Monty Python to the three witches tending a cauldron in Macbeth, the magical arts wielded by witches have long been associated with the mysterious pagan other. However, a long tradition of Jewish magic exists, a tradition that both borrows from and contributes to the magic of their pagan neighbors. Dr. Kristine Garroway This live online class in our Beit Midrash with Dr. Kristine Garroway, Visiting Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible, HUC-JIR/Los Angeles, will examine different aspects of ancient Jewish magic-starting with the Hebrew Bible and ending with Late Antiquity-including the fine line between magic and miracles, rituals to ward off evil, and what the rabbis thought about demons in the bathroom. AAA MEET THE MOTHERS AND FATHERS THEY NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT January 12 and January 26, 11 am-12 pm The Bible is filled with fascinating characters, many whose names and stories we’ve never heard. Dr. Joe Levy leads this class through the lesser-known stories in the Jewish tradition, exploring what we can learn from these characters and from one another. Bring your Bible to these classes. AAA ISRAELI MOVIE CINEPLEX Tuesday, January 14, 7 pm To deepen our connection to Israel and to enhance our understanding about the issues that Israel faces, we will show three thought-provoking films at our Israeli Movie Cineplex: The Syrian Bride Precious Life Precious Life, The Syrian Bride, and The Gatekeepers. JANUARY 2014 VOICE I was fortunate to chaperone, with Rabbi Greenstein, Rabbi Grossman, and Lisa Barden, 30 of our tenth grade Confirmation students on a trip to New York City November 14-17. Together, we experienced Shabbat at Central Synagogue and Temple Emanu-El (two of the largest Reform congregations in America), explored Jewish immigration to America with visits to the Statue of Liberty and the Lower East Side, and visited the 9/11 Memorial. In addition, our students built stronger relationships with one another, as they ate, learned, shopped, toured, and played together. This trip is one of the highlights of the Confirmation year and a transformative experience for many of our youth. Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center children and their families raised more than $2,500 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by participating in a week-long event called Trike-A-Thon. Trike-A-Thon is a fun, age appropriate curriculum program that teaches children riding-toy safety lessons through a series of interactive stories. Teachers communicated about safety, using puppets, stories, and videos. Children viewed these lessons from inspiring St. Jude friends, Bikewell Bear, and Pedals the Bunny. As participants, the children learned valuable safety skills while earning prizes based on the donations they raised. As the culminating activity of Trike-A-Thon week, the children brought their helmets to school and rode tricycles and bicycles in a Grand Prix style route in our driveway. The program had two benefits: the first was to teach children about bike safety, and the second was to help save the lives of children battling cancer and other life threatening diseases. If you would like to make a donation, please go to stjude.org/donate. L’Shalom, Here are some reflections from the students who participated in the trip: “The trip is not only going to Shabbat services. It really makes you have a special bond with your peers.” “The trip is a way to feel connected. You feel connected to Judaism. You feel connected to your friends. And you feel connected to yourself.” “I feel like through the trip I grew closer to the people I didn’t really know that well, making the class feel more like a community, and making me grow closer to Temple Israel.” “This trip was absolutely amazing! I got close with so many people here. I will never forget this trip.” “The Friday night service [at Central Synagogue] made me feel connected to Jews everywhere and reminded me that we are all connected through our Judaism.” “The NYC trip made me realize that I am a part of something special, and that I am lucky to have opportunities like this.” “This has been the best Jewish trip I have ever taken!” L’Shalom, Lauren Luskey, Director of Congregational Learning laurenl@timemphis.org 901.937.2776 Twitter: @LELuskey JANUARY 2014 VOICE Susan N. Massey Road, Memphis, TN 38120-3299 MAKE 2014 A YEAR OF LIFELONG LEARNING The unique attitude of the Jew is not the love of knowledge, but the love of study. ~Abraham Joshua Heschel With a new year comes new resolutions – perhaps a decision to spend more time with family and friends, to go to the gym every day, or to quit a bad habit. As we think about how to improve our lives in the year to come, we hope all the adult members of our community will make a renewed commitment to Jewish learning, to enrich not only our physical, but also our mental and emotional needs. Temple Israel offers many ways for adults to engage in Lifelong Learning: A The Jewish Responses to Ethical Dilemmas series allows us to engage deeply with questions of right and wrong in our homes, our work, and our community, using Jewish sources as a guide. A Sacred Conversations creates a space for families to have conversations with loved ones about end-of-life needs using the Five Wishes document (copies are available at Temple). A Distance learning in the Beit Midrash has enabled learners to engage with scholars throughout the world in deep, meaningful discussions. A Ongoing Hebrew, Torah study, and Bible study classes help us find a home in our Jewish texts, language, and traditions. We encourage you to attend at least one new Take Root: Lifelong Learning session this year, to connect more deeply with others, and to enrich your Jewish mind and soul. Please see page 2 for a description of all Take Root: Lifelong Learning programs for the month of January. TIMEMPHIS.ORG | FACEBOOK.COM/TEMPLEISRAEL | TWITTER: @TIMEMPHIS
