New Ulm Medical Center Foundation
REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
THANK YOU!
We have so much to be happy about today! Thank you for being a part of a successful year of giving to New Ulm Medical Center Foundation!
Established in 2003, the New Ulm Medical Center
Foundation is a nonprofit organization that exists
to enhance the health of New Ulm Medical Center
patients and the wellness of the communities we serve.
The mission of Allina Health has such a direct
correlation to what New Ulm Medical Center
Foundation has a strategic focus on. In 2016, we look
forward to our partnerships with population health
improvement – Heart of New Ulm, Children’s Health
Initiatives and Mental Health. We will connect patients
with expert specialists through Telehealth, use best
practices of Holistic Care models, continue care
coordination – especially helping the elderly or those
burdened by disease, and expand to a regional focus
of health care needs. We are excited about the
upcoming transitions in health care and how
In 2015, New Ulm Medical Center

A safe, easy technology called Alpha-Stim is
being used by providers in the mental health
department at New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC)
for patients who have anxiety, depression and
insomnia. The devices were funded by the
NUMC Foundation at a total cost of $5,000.
Alpha-Stim is a device that has been around since 1981 and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992. The device
itself is simple – it clips lightly and comfortably onto the patients’ earlobes. Patients may feel a little tingling in their earlobes and may experience a little light-headedness but those symptoms are generally very minor.
What the device is actually doing is increasing alpha
brain wave activity which is associated with states of meditation and relaxation.
“When someone decides to use the technology, they clip in, and we go through a regular therapy session
while they have this unit running,” said Janice Beauduy,
MD, PhD, a psychologist at NUMC. All the providers
in the outpatient mental health department at NUMC
received training in the use of the Alpha-Stim prior to
making it available to patients.
“I consider it to be a supplement to talk therapy,” said
Psychologist Betsy Anderson, PhD. “I often tell people
that this treatment is available, it’s not going to hurt and
it may just help as a supplement to the therapy we are
already doing. They’ve got nothing to lose by trying it.”
Initially it is intended to be used daily and ultimately
it is best if used on an ongoing basis about three times
a week. The Outpatient Mental Health Department at
NUMC also has one Alpha-Stim unit at the front desk.
After they have been approved for usage, established
clients may stop in and use this on a day that they do
not already have an appointment. The Alpha-Stim
sessions run 20-60 minutes.
4
The providers are hearing very positive feedback from their clients
on the units. Alpha-Stim has been more readily available since June
when the NUMC Foundation provided the funds to purchase units
for each provider, plus the front desk unit.
“I’ve had people say that they’ve noticed help with insomnia right
away after the first treatment,” Beauduy said. She has been using
Alpha-Stim in her own practice since 2012. “I had one patient who
was able to quit her prescription medication for insomnia and
another who was able to reduce her medication.”
In terms of anxiety, Beauduy said, it just helps people to feel calmer.
“Sometimes when people come in and they are so anxious that they
just can’t get their thoughts out, using the Alpha-Stim may help to
calm them down enough to be able to talk through the session,”
Beauduy said.
“I have also been using it with substance abuse patients for anxiety
and insomnia,” Anderson said. “Often, their natural rhythms have
gotten off-kilter and this helps to get them back on track.”
People who are pregnant or who have pacemakers cannot use AlphaStim. Some people do not find it tolerable because it makes them a
little nauseated. Those patients who find Alpha-Stim really valuable,
may be able to get a prescription and purchase an Alpha-Stim.
Insurers may cover part of the unit but patients should check with
their own insurance company to find out.

When a person is in active cardiac arrest, not only is a quick response imperative to
the patient’s survival but the best, most
efficient form of CPR can also mean the
difference between life and death.
With that in mind, New Ulm Medical Center
Foundation provided $13,000 for the purchase of
15 new devices for local first responders, including
police, sheriff, and fire. The two-part system is called
the ResQCPR™ System and it has been shown to
improve blood flow to the brain and vital organs, and to increase the likelihood of survival.
The system was approved by the Federal Drug
Administration (FDA) in March 2015.
The two parts that make up the ResQCPR™ System
are the ResQPod® ITD 16 and the ResQPUMP® ACDCPR Device. The ResQPUMP is a hand-held device
comprised of a suction cup that is placed on the
chest, and a handle that contains a force gauge and
metronome. It allows the caregiver to perform active
compression decompression CPR (ACD-CPR), which
compresses the chest like manual CPR, but allows the user to actively re-expand the chest to generate the
negative pressure (or vacuum) that helps to refill the
heart. It is the only device that is FDA approved to
perform ACD-CPR.
ResQCPR System was used. It is the only CPR device with an FDAapproved indication to improve the likelihood of survival.
A key to the system’s success is that the two devices used together
provides near-normal blood flow to the brain during cardiac arrest.
The device combination has been show in a clinical study to provide
near-normal systolic and diastolic blood pressures during cardiac
arrest. Some patients have even woken up during CPR when this
system is in use.
The devices are easy to learn and simple to use, says Gina PerschauBecker, supervisor of Allina Medical Transportation – New Ulm.
Perschau-Becker and Paramedic Ryan Marti trained over 30 local
personnel from several first-responder units, including the New
Ulm Police Department, the Brown County Sheriff and Courtland
Fire Department. The equipment is also compact, lightweight and
easy for each of these departments to store in their various vehicles.
“We fully expect that having our first responders equipped with
these devices will save lives in our region,” Perschau-Becker said.
The ResQPod® ITD 16 selectively prevents air from
entering the lungs during the chest wall recoil phase
(except when intended during ventilations). This
enhances the vacuum, which pulls more blood back
into the heart and lowers intracranial pressure.
According to the American Heart Association, more
than 300,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur
each year. The average survival rate is about 11 percent.
A major clinical study showed a 49 percent increase
in one-year survival from cardiac arrest when the

Through activities, education, policies and
environmental changes, the award-winning Hearts
Beat Back: Heart of New Ulm Project (HONU) is
making great strides to create a community without
heart disease in New Ulm.
The New Ulm Medical Center Foundation Board has
committed to raise $100,000 in 2016 to support HONU.
The funding will support development of a long-term,
sustainable and replicable model for prevention and health
initiatives designed to meet community needs. Most
importantly, it will ensure the Project lives beyond the
10-year research time frame, which concludes in 2018. This
local commitment helps to meet a challenge grant from
The Nolan Family Foundation to HONU’s current parent
organization, the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation
(MHIF). Each year, 2016-2018, The Nolan Family
Foundation is challenging HONU partners and supporters
to raise $500,000 triggering an additional $333,000 of
funding. NUMC Foundation’s commitment in 2016 will be
a part of that $500,000 and the remaining amount will be
raised by MHIF.
Each year, the HONU Leadership Team creates action
teams, which meet for a short period of time to work on a
specific initiative project goals.
THE CURRENT ACTION TEAMS INCLUDE:
Downtown – This team is working with downtown
merchants and the City of New Ulm to implement changes
in the downtown area that promote social connections
and improve safety for all users. Example activities include
allowing parklets, reducing the speed limit on Minnesota
Street in the downtown area, investigating the possibility
of restoring two-way traffic to the downtown section of
Minnesota Street, and other aesthetic or safety changes.
6
Safe routes to school – This team is working to increase the number of children who walk and bike to
school by making the school zone and surrounding areas
safer for walkers and bikers. The team is also working on implementing a “Walk, Bike Fun” curriculum through
various partners to help children learn the skills needed
to walk and bicycle safely. Programs are also being
developed to help encourage walking and biking, walking
school buses, and safety campaigns. Together with the
Coalition for Active, Safe and Healthy Streets, work is
being done to address the barriers identified by parents
that prevent them from allowing their children to walk
to school: too much traffic, the speed of traffic and
uncontrolled intersections. [1]
Bike group – The New Ulm Bike Group is an advocacy
team working to improve safety for people who bicycle
by improving safety on the streets. They have developed
designated bike routes using low volume city streets that
will be marked over the course of the summer, offering bike
rodeos and bicycle safety classes, and promoting bicycling
through various activities. [2]
Coalition for Active, Safe and Healthy Streets (CASHS) –
This advocacy group is working to implement a Complete
Streets policy in New Ulm. A report from the Walkable
and Livable Communities Institute was prepared for the
New Ulm community in the fall of 2013, and this group is
using the report’s recommendations to improve safety for
all users of the streets in New Ulm. The group oversees the
work of the Downtown Action Team, the Safe Routes to
School Team and the Bike Group. [3]
Worksite wellness – This team developed quarterly
worksite health leader training and networking
opportunities. The team is a collaborative partnership
between the Chamber of Commerce, the Healthy Together Program (SHIP), the NUMC Occupational
Health and Wellness Services Department and HONU
Project staff. The trainings are designed to address
needs identified through worksite focus groups
conducted in 2015.
High risk population – This collaborative team
comprised of NUMC, Brown County Public Health,
Park and Recreation, ProKinship and HONU staff will
be conducting 4 neighborhood gathering events in
May and June to collect information from New Ulm
residents that are at high risk for chronic disease. The
information gathered will be used to develop strategies
or interventions that address those barriers.
1
Communications planning – This team is a
collaboration between the Chamber of Commerce,
NUMC Occupational Health and Wellness Services and
HONU Project staff to transition the communications
of HONU over to the community. This is a gradual
transition with more partners being added as the
transition progresses over the next few years.
The HONU Leadership Team will be creating
additional action teams as part of its long-term
strategic plan.

NUMC ACHIEVEMENTS,
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
NEW ULM MEDICAL CENTER AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
Each year, New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC)
is recognized for its exceptional expertise
and care. The hospitals services, doctors and
nurses are acclaimed nationally and locally by
such organizations as the National Rural Health
Association, HealthGrades, iVantage and Becker’s Hospital Review.
New Ulm Medical Center earned the 2016
HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award.
This award distinguishes NUMC as part of the top 10 percent of hospitals nationally - and the only
one in south central/south western Minnesota - that have the lowest occurrences of 14 preventable
patient safety events. NUMC also earned this award in 2014 and 2015.
New Ulm Medical Center earned the 2016 HealthGrades Outstanding Patient
Experience Award.
New Ulm Medical New Ulm Medical Center was
named to Becker’s Hospital Review 2015 50 Critical
Access Hospitals to Know.
There are more than 1,330 critical access hospitals in the United States. To develop this “Top 50” list, the
Becker’s team conducted research and examined several
reputable hospital ranking sources relevant to critical
access hospitals, such as iVantage Health Analytics, the
National Rural Health Association, Healthgrades and
CMS’ Hospital Compare, among other sources.
New Ulm Medical Center was recognized as a
2015 Five Star rated hospital in patient satisfaction,
according to the Center for Medicare &
Medicaid Services.
This puts New Ulm Medical Center in the top 7 percent
of hospitals in America for patient satisfaction.
This award distinguishes NUMC as part of the top
15 percent of hospitals nationally - and the only one
in south central/south western Minnesota - based
on how our own patients responded to the Hospital
Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and
Systems (HCAHPS) survey. NUMC also earned this
award in 2014.
New Ulm Medical Center was named one

EMPLOYEE & PHYSICIAN
G I V I N G C A M P A I G N WORK HERE...GIVE HERE
Employees and physicians go above and beyond
New Ulm Medical Center Employees and Physicians aren’t
just dedicated to the work they do at NUMC every day of
the year. They go that extra mile by making gifts to the
NUMC Foundation to enhance healthcare services for the
benefit of everyone. The annual Employee & Physician
Giving Campaign is a fun, and rewarding time when our
employees and physicians demonstrate their commitment
to care by giving back.
Employee and Physician contributions over the past year
totaled over $109,000, making significant improvements
in the delivery of services provided.
CONTRIBUTIONS IN 2015 SUPPORTED:
3D Mammography – With a diagnosis as high as 1 in every 8 women, breast cancer touches all of us. 3D Mammography is a revolutionary new screening and
diagnostic tool designed for earlier breast cancer detection
by providing greater visibility in viewing the breast tissue.
Our digital mammography unit will be upgraded in the fall
of 2016 to include 3D software to enhance breast imaging
and position NUMC as one of the only hospitals in this
region of the state to offer this service.
Employee Emergency Fund – This fund allows
employees to help support other fellow employees in their
greatest time of need. Whether for help with a mortgage
payment, or basic family needs due to illness, death of a
family member, or other circumstances, our employees
support one another.
The Employee and Physician Giving Campaign included
several fun, creative events like a pumpkin carving contest
and lunch for a lucky few winners with New Ulm Medical
Center President Toby Freier.

Mental health and addiction connection line –
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness,
people with a serious mental health conditions wait an
average of 10 years before seeking treatment. They say it
is often more difficult to deal with stigma around their
condition than the mental health condition itself. This
phone line will connect our patients and community to
mental health and addiction services within Allina Health.
Scheduled to go live in October of 2016, this service will be a pivotal step in addressing mental health needs across the region.
Local community non-profits and charities – Our employees also support other local area non-profits,
such as United Way, who serve our communities in
countless ways!
It is an honor to recognize our employees and physicians
for making extraordinary things possible. Because of their
dedication and generosity, there are thousands of area
residents whose health will benefit with the addition of
new services.
