Bring a dish that will serve ten to twelve to share
with the group.
When going thru the line take a reasonable
amount, remember there are lots of people who
haven’t eaten and if you are still hungry you can
always go back for more after everyone has been
served.

JOIN IN THE LINE DANCING FUN!
Jean Ann LoPorto will be with us for our October
23rd luncheon. She will be leading any willing and
able participants in a variety of dances designed and
choreographed for seniors of all ages. Dances
ranging from waltz to Broadway to polka (and
everything in between!) will be taught with step by
step instruction. Music that will be played is
familiar and fun for both dancers and audience alike.
Jean Ann teaches at several facilities, including a
walk-in, no charge class at the Granite Reef Senior
Center every Friday at 10:45.
It is a well-known fact that dancing is one of the best
forms of brain exercise. So…..please join in and
take advantage of this fun filled hour to get your
body and brain working together!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
It was great to have
everyone at the
September meeting.
There were many of our
regulars, a few who we had
not seen for a while and
even a couple of new faces.
Many of you are taking
advantage of our 11:00am door opening and coming in
and socializing. Suggest those of you who are arriving at
the last moment come in and mingle with old friends are
make some new ones.
George thoughtfully booked our first entertainment of the
year before he "retired". I thoroughly enjoyed "Two For
The Money" and apparently so did others as there were
very few early departures. Jay Figley will have the job of
booking this year's shows. He has a fun audience
participation group lined up for October.
Shirley Humphrey, with Georgene's help, learned what a
job the kitchen is. Thanks to the new faces who stepped
up and helped as well as to the same ladies who are
always there. By the way, thanks also to Margie Taylor
for that wonderful grape salad/dessert/side dish. We got
the recipe for anyone who wants it.
Hopefully everyone had a great summer. Those of you
escaped the Valley for cooler climes should be coming
back. We can even enjoy the sunsets without the hum of
air conditioners. Make sure you have the "Off" as there a
few mosquitoes lurking around after our few rains.
I don't have a second home but did manage to leave town
a few times. Our Poker Pals-10 of us, mostly old (in
every sense of the word), Motorola Gals did a weekend in
Prescott at Linda Collie's cabin. Lots of eating, more
laughing and even several card games in between. The
best part of the trip was a visit to the memorial wall for the
19 Hotshots. The entire experience was very emotionally
touching. You cannot imagine how many ways 19
ordinary objects can be used to make a fitting tribute.
Hopefully they will make a permanent memorial in the
future.
My brother from Missouri visited. He made reservations
to come middle of September because I had told him the
horses didn't run at Turf Paradise until after Labor Day.
Well, what did he expect? October 5th is "after Labor
Day". He didn't specifically ask me for the calendar.
Blew that one. I thought he was coming to see ME. Now
I owe him plane tickets for February while horses are still
running. He is 20 years younger than me. I didn't want
that kid anyway. I was perfectly happy being an only
child. That was then. Now I am thankful every day I have
him.
Took a short trip to Colorado to visit Shirley Newberry's
friend. Spent an entire day at Mesa Verde National Park,
scaling ladders and hiking in 98 degree temperature.
Loved it. Another day was at a backyard barbecue the
guests of honor being a 14 point (well almost) buck and
his lady friend. The buck was eating from the bird feeder.
When I asked if it wasn't illegal to feed them--I got this
answer. "It's illegal to feed the deer. I'm feeding the birds
corn. I can't help it if the deer eat it.". The deer were
enjoying it, illegal or not. We were enjoying watching
them which was perfectly legal.
It's not even Halloween yet but we are already preparing
for our Christmas dinner. Tickets will be available at the
October meeting. The program for our holiday show will
be Marshall Trimble-Arizona's Historian.
Speaking of Halloween. Be a kid again. Come in
costume. No, we won't have candy. Too many of
us have diabetes, high cholesterol, or cavities.

Motorola Retirees’ Club Meeting Minutes
Granite Reef Senior Center
September 25, 2013
President Jackie Wishon opened the
September 25, 2013 meeting of the
Motorola Retirees’ Club of Arizona
at 11:50 AM.
Board members present were
President Jackie Wishon, Vice-Presidents Don Harrison
and Jay Figley, Treasurer, Shirley Newberry, Secretary,
LuDene Jackson and Past-President George DeWitte.
Jay Figley and Peggy Liggett were new faces at the
Ray Orth Raffle Ticket table.
Eadie Beckstein made sure everyone received a door
prize ticket. Eadie also provided name tags for the
members that forgot their badges.
LuDene Jackson “that’s me” won $70.00 in the Ray
Orth Raffle. $70.00 was also donated to the “Adopt a
Grandchild” Scholarship Program.
The May 22, 2013 minutes of the Motorola Retirees’
Club of Arizona were approved by the membership.
The May-July 2013 treasurer’s reports for the
Motorola Retirees’ Club of Arizona were approved by the
membership.
Roy Hejhall asked for volunteers to have their pictures
taken for the Senior Voice. He wants everyone to appear
in the paper.
Volunteers are always needed in the kitchen.
Rod O’Connor shared some humorous quotes from the
late Bob Hope.
The prayer and Pledge of Allegiance were led by
Chaplain Rod O’Connor.

Our thoughts and prayers were offered to the Family of
Phil McNett in the loss of their son Mike.
September Birthdays were honored.
Rod and Dorothy O’Connor are celebrating their 56th
anniversary in September.
Tickets for the Christmas Luncheon will be sold at the
October Meeting of the Motorola Retirees’ Club.
President Jackie Wishon hoped everyone had a good
summer. She added a couple of anecdotes about her
summer. Things like falling trees and her dog having
Valley Fever.
The job of pushing the trash can around was taken over
by Betty Page.
Thanks Betty.
The duo ‘Two for the Show’ were very entertaining.
They played songs from the thirties to the sixties. One of
the favorites was “Blue Hawaii”. Dewey claimed he had
laryngitis but he managed to hit the high notes for
‘Smoke Gets In Your Eyes’. Kimball plays a mean steel
guitar.
Happy winners Dolores Bentz and Michael Mihin each
won the $10 door prizes.
Shirley Humphrey did a fine job in her new position as
luncheon manager. Shirley was assisted by Georgene
DeWitte, Dottie DeVerna and Isabelle Blachere. I got in
the way a couple of times

SCHOLARSHIP
CORNER
The Club would like to thank all of you who made
donations to the scholarship fund with your
membership renewal in the month of September. It
is great to see so many members who believe in this
very worthwhile endeavor that the club underwrites
each year. As many of you know this scholarship
activity has been written in the club constitution
from the very beginning.
Article 2.0 Purpose/Objectives
2.4 Provide service to the public and the
community by gifts to charities and/or
scholarships to deserving students.
We have had a few calls this last month regarding
scholarship application form availability. The Club
will have scholarship application forms available
beginning with the November 2013 Newsletter. You
may call or email Phil McNett beginning November
1, 2013 and the application forms will be provided
for your grandchild.
The Board has set a goal to raise a minimum of
$2500.00 this year for the Scholarship fund. We
have placed a chart in the newsletter this year to
show how we are doing each month in
accomplishing this important objective. Please note
that several members donated funds in memoriam to
former Motorolan’s. This seems like a wonderful
idea to have a remembrance for good friends and
family members. If you would like to donate funds
to the scholarship fund in memory of friends or
family members please place a note with your
donation and the club will place this information in
the Senior Voice.
Please consider this worthy cause for donations with
your renewal form. The Club’s only means of
funding this project is through membership
donations. Remember you can also donate the day of
our monthly meetings by stopping and seeing our
treasurer Shirley Newberry.

I know I get my monthly mailing from Humana,
look at it and say "that looks like something I'd be
interested in". Then I promptly put it away in my
junk mail and usually never look at it again. I did
look at one recently and actually followed up on it.
Humana has a guidance center located in Mesa. It's
a great place. They have Monday through Friday
daily activities--Walk-ercise class, line dance
lessons, game day, movie day, and informational
sessions to name a few. More importantly they have
someone there to answer Humana insurance plan
questions, or Medicare questions. They are very
willing to help. Also, you are welcome anytime whether you are a Humana member or not. Maybe
it's somewhere you'd like to check out if you live in

Message from your Treasurer
I have some "big shoes" to fill as the treasure for the club
so please have patience with me. Even though I've had
this position for over a year, I am still learning. You all can

help me by making sure I have your correct address on
file. We (the club) has to pay postage on all returned mail.
Submitting a change of address to the post office does
not change your address in our files. We only get that
information after we have paid for your returned mail.
Please fill out you renewal forms completely. Even
though your name, address, phone, or e-mail may not
have changed in the last 20 years..we do keep this on
file.and it you don't fill it out..I have to. Also, please note if
you are renewing, a new member or
donating to the scholarship fund and write the amount
enclosed on the form. If you are renewing for more then
one year..you may also note that on the form.
I do not go to the post office every day to pickup the
Motorola mail..so if it takes a week or so before you see
your checks clear through your bank or credit union..that
is why. I do enter your renewal information into our
system the same day I pick up the mail..at least 99% of
the time.
We are looking forward to an exciting new year and hope
you will join us in making this happen. Thanks in advance
for any help or suggestions you can give me.

It is time once again for the GD (formerly Motorola) Car
Show, it will be on Tuesday, November 5th, 2013
11:00AM to 1:00PM with the 6th as a rain day (but it
never rains here). This is the 10th year of the car show.
We would like to extend the invite to anyone interested in
bringing their classic car, vehicle of interest or unique car,
doesn't need to be a muscle car or very old or anything
like that. We have opened it up a little bit to friends of
employees or retirees as well.

Seniors Texting
A senior-aged couple had finally learned how to send and receive text messages on their cell phones. The wife, being a
romantic at heart, decided one day that she'd send her husband a text while she was out of the house having coffee
with a friend.
She texted:
"If you are sleeping, send me your dreams.
If you are laughing, send me your smile.
If you are eating, send me a bite.
If you are drinking, send me a sip.
If you are crying, send me your tears.
I love you."
The husband, being a no-nonsense sort of guy, texted back:
"I'm on the toilet. Please advise."

Are You The Parent?
Or The Child?
And When Did It Change?
A friend of mine recently had the joy of celebrating her 70th birthday. Her out of town daughter, son and two grandsons
visited for the occasion. She shared with me the email correspondence her daughter had with a local store.
I will be traveling to the Valley to help my Mom celebrate her 70th Birthday next month, though a pair of shoes is not going to be her
Birthday Present, I wanted to take her to a shoe store like yours and have her fitted for a pair of Walking Shoes. I'm wondering how often
you deal with the elderly, she's a sprite 69 year old, and I want her to be treated like you would a Marathon Runner and really help her
find a good stable pair of shoes she will be able to use on her Morning Walks.
After much laughter over the elderly comment we asked ourselves when did our children become the parents? (Or at least
try to.) Do you sometimes feel that way? It was such a short time ago we were deciding between soft/hard soles and Stride
Right vs Thom McCan.
Remember when our precious Johnny had to tell everyone within shouting distance his stitches were from his sister hitting
him in the head with her toy iron? Now do you hear, "Mom do you have to tell everyone you see about your knee
replacement surgery"? Could just as easily be gall bladder surgery, whatever. How many times did you tell your kids, "Don't
be so loud"? Do they now say, "Dad have you had your hearing checked recently"?
I frequently go to my granddaughter's college volleyball games. Every time I get in the car to head toward home my daughter
reminds me, "Call when you get home". Occasionally I forget. Sure enough, I get a phone call and a gentle reminder. This
from the daughter who went to concerts at Compton Terrace, miles from home, before cell phones, saying, "I'll be home
when it's over Mom". Just exactly when "over" was, was never a definite. How many encores does Gary Puckett and the
Union Gap usually do?
Did you have a son who wore long white crew socks that reached just below his knees and an extra large white tee shirt that
came to just above his knees? Does that son now roll his eyes when he sees Dad with socks on with sandals? Better still.
Did that same son have hair in his eyes and four inches down his back? Does he now say, "Dad want me to run you down to
the barber shop"? Oops, make that the stylist. Do they even have barber shops anymore?
Scarier still is a short car trip to anywhere. Try suggesting "you" drive anywhere. Off spring stands there seemingly trying to
decide should she take her life in her hands and ride with you. Or should she go along and check your driving skills. After all
maybe the Motor Vehicle Department needs to have you come in for a test. You know all the kids have been discussing
whether Mom/Dad should still be driving. This is the same 16 year old daughter who crossed a flooded wash in a 1963
Corvair and had to be rescued by the police. This was before the stupid motorist law. Oh yes, she also rear ended a
Mercedes in that same Corvair and when she cried and said, "My Dad is going to kill me", this lovely man hugged her and
said, "Don't cry sugar I have insurance".
My own personal demon is procrastination. I have this convenient Costco box on top of the dryer. It holds any mail that
doesn't have to handled the second time -- just yet. My car/truck insurance renews on the 30th of September complete with
automatic bank withdrawal. On the 28th my oldest son came in with a post-it note and handed it to me. On it he had written,
"Mom, put proof of insurance in truck". Get real! I had 2 days. Seems he doesn't trust me to remember so he has a
reminder in his phone to remind me. This coming from a kid who told me at 9:00PM he had to have a shoebox diorama for
school tomorrow. By the way I worked third shift and had to be at work at 12:00 midnight.
Another friend tells me her children keep suggesting they come and help her "organize" her things. By that they mean
parking a dumpster in front for a week. Is this the same boy who would not throw away a broken bat from his first Little
League hit until he left for college? The girl who kept her Barbie doll with no arms until her wedding day? Those were
treasures to them then. Our "stuff" is memories to us now. We don't need to be told to "clean our rooms". We cleaned their
rooms for them. They can some day clean ours.
I used to tell my kids that I hoped they would have a child just like them. I have lived to see some of that. Still to come--I
won't be here to enjoy it--is the day they become the child again.
