November/December 2011 CHAMBER HOLIDAY OFFICE HOURS Chamber News NEW IDEAS IN PLACE FOR 2012 Livonia Chamber looks to continue growth, prominence built in 2011 'Tis the season for family and tradition! The Livonia Chamber of Commerce office will be closed for the holiday season from Monday, December 26 Monday, January 2, 2012. The Chamber will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. We wish all Chamber Members a safe, wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year! CHAMBER OFFERS $1,000 ADULT LEARNER SCHOLARSHIP For a second year, the Livonia Chamber of Commerce is offering a $1,000 scholarship to an adult learner enrolled to take classes at a local college or university. An application and 500-word essay must be submitted to the Chamber office by Friday, January 6, 2012. The scholarship will be awarded at the Chamber’s annual Leadership and Awards Celebration on January 19, at Laurel Manor. Application details have been distributed in recent e-mail blasts from Chamber. For more details, call the Chamber office at 734.427.2122. Livonia’s Business Connection Dan West, President Many Livonia businesses saw gradual growth as the city’s unemployment rate continued in the right direction, below 6 percent in 2011. This helped the Livonia Chamber of Commerce also experience a bit of a resurgence as well. Here are some highlights: •The Chamber’s membership surpassed 800 for the first time in several years. •A combined total of 1,800 people attended four major Chamber luncheons held in 2011: They were events that featured Governor Rick Snyder, Mayor Jack Kirksey, Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock, and County Executives Bob Ficano and L. Brooks Patterson. These accomplishments were made possible by our loyal, interested, and generous members and by the efforts of our dedicated staff. The collective effort generated a lot of buzz for our community, chamber and our businesses. For that, I wish you all a heart-felt thank you! We collected some 160 surveys from our members in e-mails and at our Membership Appreciation Reception in November as we continue our planning for events and programs that will support our members in 2012. In those surveys, the most-common reason why people are involved in the Livonia Chamber of Commerce is the networking opportunities. That will be a motivating factor as we tweak our events and introduce new programs in 2012. President Column continues on page 8. •The Chamber expanded its offering of video resources with a new You Tube Channel, which featured short videos of grand openings and events and a touching presentation by Babcock, and clips of city council and school board candidates. •The Chamber created a new Home Improvement Show at Churchill High School in March which attracted 55 exhibitors and some 500 people. •The Chamber expanded its programming to include individualized workshops with on-line social networks. •Creation of the Livonia Industrial Council, which has evolved into a workforce development initiative designed to support local manufacturers and related industries. Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson were the featured speakers at a joint Chamber luncheon in November. For more details see page 6. Brooks Patterson to the same stage on November 15 at St. Mary’s Cultural Center. In March, the two Chambers united to bring Governor Snyder in front of 650 people. Two-hundred and forty people heard both county executives talk about their counties and some of the issues being discussed in Southeast Michigan and answer questions from the audience in a relaxed format. Patterson highlighted some of the cost-cutting measures of Oakland County, getting rid of longevity pay, health care coverage of retirees and pay freezes and reductions over a five-year period for county employees, among other measures. “I believe in long-range planning vs. crisis management,” Patterson said. He also highlighted the county's wisdom in preparing three-year budgets. Ficano said on a recent trade mission, he spoke to business and government leaders. “There are three cities they know, New York for Wall Street, Los Angeles for Hollywood and movies, and Detroit. For 100 years, we've had a history of putting the world on wheels and they recognize that.” AT Ficano said the county cut its work force and cut all salaries by 10 percent, including his own, but was brief in his response to a question about severance packages. At moments they made jokes about each other. Near the end they discussed which Republican Presidential candidate they thought should win the Republican primary. Ficano being a Democrat did not have the same enthusiasm as the conservative Patterson. “We all know Mr. Ficano is going through a challenging time, but we appreciate that he joined us to meet with this unique business audience,” Livonia Chamber President Dan West said. “It was an extremely professional environment.” Excerpts of this article from the Livonia Observer The 240 in attendance listened to Robert Ficano and L. Brooks Patterson answer questions from emcees Dan West, Livonia Chamber President, and Mary Engleman, Greater Farmington Area Chamber Executive Director. Please keep in mind, everyone may not be attracted to all our events, but we hope everyone will at least be interested in a number of our programs coming next year. Here are some of the things we are planning: • At least two major luncheons throughout the year, in addition to the State of the City Luncheon in March. We’ve reached out to several high-profile speakers and hope to make some announcements soon. • Continue efforts to increase the tech-savvy talent pool for local manufacturers through the Livonia Industrial Council. We believe Livonia is home to a community-oriented base of businesses, organizations, and residents who are loyal to this town. This is what makes our community tick. And this makes it imperative for the Livonia Chamber of Commerce to play a productive role in supporting the community dynamics. This is what motivates us as we work to support you and the Place Mall on May 10, in a move that will lower the cost collective business community. We hope you will join us for another interesting ride in 2012 as we work together to for exhibitors while increase their exposure to foot continue the momentum of our community’s resurgence. traffic. We will also revamp our Expo evening Taste event which will be held in the Marriott Hotel. • The Livonia Business Expo will move to Laurel Park • The Chamber plans to hold an Oktoberfest event in the fall, an outdoor event that will feature a variety of food, beer and entertainment. • More events that feature basic after-work networking and tours of Livonia’s plants. On behalf of the Chamber’s Board of Directors and staff, we wish you a Happy Holiday season and a productive 2012! Chamber News 9 MEMBER PROFILE____________________________ Stevenson alum returns home to build new chain of tanning salons A Livonia native has returned home to open a trendy line of tanning salons in metro Detroit, starting with his first location in Livonia, on Plymouth Road near Farmington Road. The first Zip Tanz opened in late-September at a location with trendy interior décor and new stand-up tanning equipment at the site of a former tanning salon at Livonia’s Fountain Park development. “Our price, interior motif, floor, and new stand-up equipment – which tans you twice as fast a lay down machine – is our competitive edge,” Manager Felisha Sharp said. “You can pay $9.99 a month for unlimited visits, nobody can beat that! We are Cleaner, Faster, and Stronger than our competition, and we have the best prices on tanning lotion!” Jon German is a 1993 Livonia Stevenson High School graduate and earned a degree in marketing from Michigan State University. He eventually moved for Florida where we developed a luxury beachside real estate business. He spends most of his time in Florida, but wanted to return to his native Livonia to establish his new tanning concept. In his own way, he is bringing the Florida sunshine back to his hometown. “I wanted to come back to Livonia and leave a mark in the place I grew up,” German said. Zip Tanz has nine stand-up tanning units, which are designed for five- to 10-minute visits, and one spray-tan which, German said, is designed to help people turn from “faded to fabulous” in 60 seconds with a topical tanning spray featuring DHA, a colorless chemical that is not absorbed through the skin into the body and it has no known toxicity, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Member Profile continues on page 10. Jon German, back row, joined his family and Mayor Jack Kirksey for the grand opening of Zip Tanz. Chamber News 10 Livonia Alum Opens Zip Tanz on Plymouth Road Member Profile continued from page 9. “It is a fun business,” German said. “People are having a good time when they come in to see you. They come here because people put a good emphasis on looking their best and we can help them do that.” Now that German has opened his first salon in Livonia, he plans to open Zip Tanz locations in Royal Oak, Troy and West Bloomfield in summer 2012. He has plans to grow awareness of his new enterprise with a strong print and on-line advertising presence and via targeted mailing. Dan West, president of the Livonia Chamber of Commerce, said German’s enterprise is the latest of many examples of former L ivonians who r et ur n contribute to their hometown. to “Many people who grow up here and move away, still maintain an allegiance for Livonia,” West said. “In this case, Jon has decided to stay engaged with this place by sharing his entrepreneurial spirit and abilities.” Zip Tanz in Livonia is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The phone number is 855.ZIP.TANZ. For more information and for coupons, visit the salon’s website at www.ziptanz.com. Kirksey re-elected; Kritzman, Robinson to join City Council Jack Kirksey was elected to a fourth, four-year term as Livonia’s mayor Nov. 8 as he secured 62 percent of the vote over challenger Pat O’Neil. Laura Toy, John Pastor, Brandon Kritzman, and Tom Robinson won seats on the seven-member Livonia City Council. Toy, who will be council president for the next two years, Pastor, who will be council vice-president, and Kritzman each earned four-year terms. Robinson earned a twoyear term. City Treasurer Dennis Wright and City Clerk Terry Marecki were each re-elected to four-year terms. Both were uncontested in the election. All elected officials were inaugurated in a Dec. 8 ceremony, but their new terms don’t begin until Jan. 1, 2012.
