While they were eating, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he
took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all
of you. This is my blood of the new covenant which is poured out for many
for the forgiveness of sins.” Mt 26:26-28
I remember as a little girl growing up that there were always guests in
our home for supper. It seemed as if we were constantly setting the table for one more person.
There was one gentleman in particular whom I remember well. His name was Lester.
Time and again, my mother would be preparing supper and my sisters and I would be helping
to set the table. Regularly, one of us would run to the front door and Lester would be sitting
on the glider at the end of the front porch. Sometimes he would be dozing and sometimes we
would find him just patiently waiting.
We would holler back to our mom in the kitchen, “Lester’s here!” And mother would
always set another place and make room for Lester. We were a family, rather a large family,
but in our house, there was always room for Lester.
We’re a family here at Christ UMC too. We have a sign in our church that proclaims,
“There are no strangers here, only family we have not yet met.” And our vision is to become
a “Christ-centered and biblically grounded family of people who are empowered by the Holy
Spirit to seek to serve God through prayer, worship, fellowship, discipleship, healing, forgiveness and reconciliation.”
It seems to me that there’s some similarity in my family and their relationship with
Lester and our family here at Christ UMC. In both families, there’s always room for one
more at the table. Regardless of how long you may have been in this family, whether you
were a founding member or you’re a first time visitor, there’s room for you. It’s like the family has been waiting for you to come home and you’ve been waiting on the front porch to hear
that supper’s ready and you are invited to the table!
Every time we partake of Holy Communion as a church family, we hear Christ’s invitation to come home, supper’s ready and the table is set with a place just for you. “Christ our
Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live
in peace with one another.” And with joyful hearts, we wake up from our dozing or patient
waiting and we make our way to Christ’s table. There we find that there’s room for me and
there’s room for you and there’s always room for more. See you at the table of our Lord!

Are You Willing To Let Go?
I was listening to the radio the other day and this song came on. The song is called
“You Can Have Me” by the Sidewalk Prophets. The song starts out like this:
If I saw You on the street
And You said come and follow me
But I had to give up everything
All I once held dear and all of my dreams
Would I love You enough to let go
Or would my love run dry
When You asked for my life
It really got me to thinking how I would respond if someone asked me to drop everything I was doing and follow him. Can you imagine how Peter and Andrew felt or
what they were thinking? They didn’t make plans or find someone to work for them
in their absence. They just left. I don’t know about you, but in my life, I find that
when I’m afraid to let go, many times it is because I fear what will happen when I’m
no longer in control of my life. Those who know me know that I’m a planner. I want
to prepare for the contingencies, and I try to leave nothing to chance. And I’m that
way about my own life and future. But when Jesus calls to invite me to follow Him,
He’s basically asking me to hand over the control of my life to Him. The question is,
“Am I willing to let go of control and let God be the Lord of my life?” Are you willing?

Preschool is back in full swing and the halls are filled with “a joyful noise”. Currently we
have 3 classes with a total of 39 students. There are still people calling and we can possibly add
another 3 children. Praise God!
On Thursday evening, Sept. 16th, we will be having our Open House from 6:30-7:30. Families
are invited to come and see their child‟s classroom as well as some of the work they have done already. And then on Saturday morning, we hope to catch some of the „early birds‟ who like to be
first at yard sales. Once they are done shopping, we look forward to them having a pancake breakfast with our staff and church family.
On the heels of these 2 events, next week we‟ll be having breakfast with our grandparents.
This is one of our favorite events and can‟t wait to meet some of the new grandparents as well as
see some of them returning again.
With fall right around the corner, it seems, we usually go to Claxton Farms but unfortunately they are not hosting field trips this year. We are looking into a new destination called Hickory Nut Farms. We‟ll let you know next month what kind of adventure we made it to.
So far we have had 2 moms offer to help out in our 2 and 3 year old classrooms. We introduce Cindy Hoots, mom to Jack, Connor and Will in the 2 year old class and Brandi Herron, mom to
Kenley in the 3 year old class. Thank you in advance to these moms who will help with parties and
attend our preschool board meetings throughout the year.
Last Monday, we had a special visitor…..her name is Ms. Linda. Ms. Linda has been with us
several years and takes time to pick out special books from the Weavaerville library and then
comes in to read to the 3 & 4 year old classrooms. The kids warmed right up to her and we are
grateful to have her back with our preschool family again this year. She‟ll be here every Monday for
storytime.
I also want to thank all the parents who have donated supplies to the classrooms. We appreciate all the tissues, wipes and Lysol that will help keep us prepared for the winter season.

Just So You’ll Know
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This month we meet Kelly Urquhart. Kelly joined the church last August, but has
been active in many church activities prior to and since joining.
Kelly was born and raised in Kingsport, TN but moved to Florida in her early twenties, where she lived for 18 years before moving to Asheville. Her work experiences
include hotel hospitality as a dining room manager, front desk reception, night auditor,
and bookkeeper. During this work in Florida, she had the opportunity to meet and
work with some of the astronauts and their families. Kelly has also worked in cosmetology, as a bartender, and waited tables. She left her job working with the Florida
Health Department to move to Asheville. Of that experience, she says “Working there
has to be one of the most rewarding jobs I have had.”
Kelly’s mother had a bed and breakfast in north Asheville and a sister that lives in Asheville. She moved here
hoping to spend time with both of them. Her interests include first of all, her puppy dog Floyd, then reading,
writing, art, children, church, family, football, and anything outside. Her hobbies include crocheting, and using her artistic talents to create and design artwork that she makes from “found” objects and jewelry. She says
she “likes to visualize something then make it. I make up my own designs and ideas.” She also enjoys writing and singing.
Kelly came to our church through an introduction from Laura Lever. “I had heard so many great things about
the church from Laura and I was at a point in my life that I really needed a church and church family.”
Kelly is very active in various church ministries especially working with the youth and as a prayer minister.
She states “Everyone uses their ministry in different ways. I try and use mine everyday wherever I may be. If
there is a will, there is a way!”

From the Missions/Outreach Team:
October is a busy month for everyone and outreach opportunities abound for our church family to show
Christ’s love in action at home and around the world this month.
At Home:
Thank you to everyone who contributed needed items for the women at Room in the Inn. Thanks
go to our volunteer drivers Oct 3-10 also.
Calling volunteers of all ages, children through adults! Many have expressed a desire to help serve the
homeless through The Asheville Mission Congregation. Rev Brian Combs preached to us in
July and invites congregations to get involved reaching out to the homeless in our community. On Saturday, Oct 16, we will meet at Christ UMC at 9:00 am and carpool to an orientation/worship service at 9:30 am and stay to volunteer for 1-2 hours doing needed tasks for this ministry. Children
accompanied by a responsible adult and youth are welcome. Plan to return to Christ UMC around 12:30
pm. We need to let them know how many wish to attend so please RSVP to Laura Lever by Sunday,

Nationwide:
Please be in prayer for the group going on the home repair Adult Mission Trip to The Community Crossing/McDowell Mission in Welch, WV on Oct 31-Nov 5. We will be leaving the church
at 1 pm on Sunday, Oct 31 and returning in the early evening on Friday, Nov 5. The following items are
needed by this ministry:
Youth Center – bean bag chairs, bar stools, floor pillows, 36” TV
Home Repair Ministry – tin snips, vise grips, chalk lines, 25’ tape measure, utility knives, 2’ level, flat
bars, utility lights
Crisis Center – complete sets of drinking glasses, complete sets of dishes, sets of pots and pans, twin,
full, and queen size blankets.
If you wish to donate any of these items, please contact Bruce Blankenship, Patty Klatt, or Laura Lever
by Sunday, Oct 24. This group hopes to be servants to this community in West Virginia and witnesses to
the blessing of Jesus Christ in changed lives.
In the World:
What priceless gift comes in a shoe box and travels around the world? Operation Christmas Child
boxes bring toys, needed items, school supplies, and the story of Jesus Christ’s love to millions of children around the world every year at Christmas. Once again, the church family at Christ UMC will participate in collecting, praying for, and donating these gifts of love during October and November. Look
for “how to” instructions and donation envelopes in the back of the sanctuary. Our goal is 50
boxes which are due for dedication by Sunday, Nov 14.

proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year

The Origin of World Communion
In 1933, a Pittsburg pastor, Hugh Thompson Kerr, had a unique idea, What if churches all
around the world celebrated Holy Communion on the same Sunday? He contacted leaders of
various denominations worldwide. His idea was met with such warm enthusiasm that celebrating
the sacrament on the first Sunday of October is now an annual affair. It unites Christians throughout the world, or in the words of the popular hymn:
In Christ there is no east or west,
In Him no south or north;
But one great fellowship of love
Throughout the whole wide earth.
(The United Methodist Hymnal Page 548)
On Sunday, October 3 we will share in the
sacrament of Holy Communion
with Christians all over the world.
This Worship Service will focus on our commitment as a body of
believers to give fully of our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our
service and our witness. If you haven’t already, please prayerfully
consider how your family can take that “Leap of Faith” for the growth
of God’s kingdom on this special Sunday.
