SCRIPTURE CORNER
WATCHING FOR THE MESSIAH
Today’s Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing and following Jesus sounds so simple and casual, it’s easy to miss the significant acts of faith that are made.
John points to Jesus: “Look,” he says, “there is the Lamb of God.” John’s faith in Jesus is evident, so
evident that John’s disciples immediately leave his side to follow this Jesus.
The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend time with him, and are quick
to spread the good news of their discovery: “We have found the Messiah.”
It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations, the hopes of many ages of faithful people
were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the Messiah, foretold by the prophets,
had finally come. Nearly everyone among the Jewish people was watching for the Messiah back then; who in
our own society watches for signs of the presence of the Messiah today?

FR. LOUIS FAREWELL INFORMATION
After nearly 44 years of ministry in the Diocese of Biloxi, Fr. Louis Lohan is retiring.
All Masses this weekend are dedicated to Fr. Louis’ farewell. A St. Thomas Parish Family reception will be held in
the Community Center on January 18th from 2-5pm. All members of the St. Thomas Long Beach Parish are invited to
this event.
SALTILLO MISSION
IRISH PRIEST REUNION
For many, many years now, the Diocese of Biloxi
and the Diocese of Jackson have supported the Mission in
Saltillo, Mexico. Even though it is not possible now because of the dangers of travel to Mexico, many youth and
adult trips were made as mission trips to Saltillo where
our teens and adults ministered to the poor people in the
areas surrounding Saltillo. Many of our diocesan priests
have served in Saltillo. Fr. Louis was there for four
years. That’s why he speaks Irish/Spanish. Next week,
you will find an envelope in your packet to help support
the Saltillo Mission. Please be generous. If your envelope is not handy, just use a plain envelope or mark your
check “Saltillo Mission.”
Thanks to St. Thomas the Apostle Parish for hosting the Mass for deceased priests. The Carlow College
Alumni Association is very appreciative of all that the parish did to make the celebration of the Mass and the gathering in the Community Center a great success. From the
greeters handing out programs to the serving of the last
morsel of food at the reception, everything was top notch.
The liturgy was very well planned and executed—we
thank the choir, singers, instrumentalists, flag bearers,
readers, altar servers, the Knights of Columbus honor
guard, master of ceremonies, ushers, greeters, gift bearers,
and everyone who participated in the celebration and remembrance of priests who have gone home to God. The
homily honoring Fr. Louis was delivered by Fr. Tommy
Conway. Bishop Morin was the main celebrant; Bishop
Howze (who originally assigned Fr. Louis to St. Thomas)
and Bishop Kopacz of the Diocese of Jackson concelebrated. There were approximately 50 priests and many deacons and nuns in attendance. Thanks to all who provided
food and beverages, set up, served, and cleaned up. It was
truly a wonderful evening and a great celebration.
