Steppin’ Up & Steppin’ Out for The Dimock Center Celebrating Twenty Years: 1988 - 2007 CREDITS Steppin’ Out 20 and this 20th Anniversary Commemorative Book is a production of The Dimock Center’s Office of Development & Communications. Editor: Denella J. Clark, Chief of Development & Communications Design & Layout: Jennifer Adler, Director of Communications PHOTOGRAPHY The photographs that grace the pages of this Commemorative Book (unless otherwise noted) have been taken by Don West, no stranger to the Boston community. We appreciate his ability to capture the life and spirit of Steppin’ Out and thank him for allowing us to use his photographs to tell our story. Introduction It is our honor and privilege to introduce this commemorative book in celebration of Steppin’ Out 20, Dimock’s major fundraising event. As Dimock has grown and evolved over the years, so, too, has Steppin’ Out. Ruth Ellen Fitch and Clayton Turnbull “Nothing is more important than the health of our residents. Steppin’ Out for Dimock Community Health Center is a vital part of our strategy to continue providing quality, affordable health care with a cultural understanding to treat patients from diverse backgrounds.” The Honorable Thomas M. Menino Mayor, City of Boston It has always been a friend-raiser, not only for Dimock, but for the City of Boston. The diversity of all who attend Steppin’ Out has set the example for bringing together the ethnic and cultural mosaic that is Boston and all of us who live here. The excitement and joy of Steppin’ Out has always made it the “must attend” event of the year. Steppin’ Out has provided great support for Dimock and its program areas over these many years. From our Health Center to our Behavioral Health services to our Child and Family programs, we have been able to grow our services and meet the changing needs of ever larger numbers of patients and clients in our community. The spirit of Steppin’ Out is ever present at Dimock. It is an important identity for Dimock and is a beacon of our service to our community. Our friends and staff work hard each year to ensure that Steppin’ Out is worthy of your support. Our sponsors understand Dimock’s value to our community and the needs for ensuring that we continue to deliver highquality services. Thank you, Ruth Ellen Fitch President & CEO Clayton H.W. Turnbull Chairman of Board The Vision Twenty years ago, a small, energetic group of Dimock supporters gathered in Board Member Frank Morris’s home to brainstorm how they were going to create a unique and high quality gala benefit to mark the 125th anniversary of New England Hospital/ Dimock Community Health Center. It was critically important to them that the event reflect the diversity of Boston while bringing all of its citizens together for a fundraising event done like never before. Jackie Jenkins-Scott, Dimock’s former President & CEO, Ken Davis, Dimock’s first Director of Development, Carolyn Golden Hebsgaard and Rudy Umscheid, Steppin’ Out’s first Gala Co-Chairs, Ric Murphy, Anniversary Chairman, and the late Ron Leavell, Steppin’ Out’s first producer, wanted to create something special - an event that was more than a routine fundraiser, something more like a “friend-raiser” - with great music and guests from all segments of Boston. the “Chittlin’ Circuit,” a string of clubs and venues that welcomed entertainers. Some of the clubs were located in the South End of Boston which over time had been razed as a result of urban renewal. Ken Davis remembers watching “Say Brother,” a TV program with a focus on issues and concerns of the African American community at-large. One of the segments addressed I once heard Jackie say, ‘They’re not going to turn this place into a parking lot.’ How wonderful would it be if that same spirit of reclamation could be applied He recalls, “It was interesting to watch a program about Boston’s past while at the same time Jackie Jenkins-Scott and the Board were working to reclaim the old New England Hospital for Women and Children so it could service the community. to an event that brought back the memories and nostalgia of years past by the reenactment of these old clubs?” The concept of a club circuit was crystallized and accepted by the group, operationalized by the production genius of Ron Leavell, given a “look” by the creative graphic design of Mark Minnelli and “Steppin’ Out” was born. Denella Clark apprenticed under Ron Leavell in 1999 and over the past nine years, many new components have been added to keep the Steppin’ Out brand fresh including recognition awards, young professional and gospel clubs, a VIP dinner reception, and an annual local talent search. The Cultural Diversity Since its inception, the goal of Steppin’ Out has been threefold: to raise much needed funds for Dimock; to provide the community a night of great music that they might not otherwise have access to; and to bring all kinds of people together to share a good time for a good cause. Throughout the last two decades, the volunteer leadership that raises critical funds for Dimock through Steppin’ Out has always been diverse. Gala Co-Chairs are Black, White, male, female, leaders in their industry, members of the corporate and philanthropic community, old and young. A Brief History The cultural tapestry of leadership ensures an event that embraces everyone. Steppin’ Out guests come from both local cities and places far away all to support the important health and human services Dimock provides. The Music Over the years, Fred Taylor, Ron Leavell, George Wein, and Denella Clark have brought some of the best jazz, R&B, Latin, and world musicians to Steppin’ Out. Noted past performers include: George Benson, Della Reese, The Persuasions, Dennis Edwards & The Temptations, Bobby Blue Bland, Oleta Adams, Jerry Butler, Mongo Santamaria, Clark Terry, Angela Bofill, T.S. Monk, Jr., Chuck Mangione, Eddie Palmieri, Walter Beasley, Roberta Flack, James Montgomery, Ramsey Lewis, Dwele, Vivian Green and Bobby Caldwell. Many talented local stars have also taken the stage. Mae Arnette, Andre Ward, Motown Express, Roy Haynes, Rebecca Parris, Cecilia Smith, Clarence Powell, and South Central Mass Choir are just a few. The “Nightclubs” Steppin’ Out is divided into several “venues” named after some of the great clubs that have contributed to shaping musical history. Frank Morris’s early photos of the actual clubs served as inspiration for the first Steppin’ Out. Today, entire hotels and function halls are converted into a modern “club circuit”. Basin Street South was one of the first large nightclubs in Boston and reflected New York City’s Basin Street nightclub. The Hi-Hat, one of Boston’s most famous nightclubs, was located on the corner of Massachusetts and Columbus Avenues (the current site of the Harriet Tubman House). From September 1963 until its closing in April 1978, The Jazz Workshop was one of the country’s leading jazz clubs. The Savoy, originally located on Massachusetts Avenue during the 1940’s and mid50’s, was home to Dixieland musicians. Opened in October of 1989, Scullers Jazz Club has set a new standard with its worldclass roster of artists. The Real Deal Steppin’ Out is a great time and an amazing, signature fundraising event. However, the real success of Steppin’ Out is how the funds raised during this one glamorous night will then help 40,000 men, women, and children living in the Greater Boston area receive exceptional care on a daily basis. Patients and clients utilizing the services available to them at Dimock feel the results of Steppin’ Out. Monies raised are used to purchase much needed things like new medical equipment for the dental and optical clinics in the health center, new books for the family library in the Mary Eliza Mahoney Shelter, or air conditioning for the John Flowers detox center. Without the financial resources generated by Steppin’ Out, Dimock would not be able to provide the vital services our community desperately needs. On this 20th anniversary of Steppin’ Out and 145th year of service, we say thank you for Steppin’ Out for Dimock! I’ve learned from so many people who have contributed their time and energy to make Steppin’ Out the high-quality, successful fundraiser it has become. I thank the thousands of Steppin’ Out guests who, by your participation, have helped thousands of Dimock patients and clients receive the care they deserve.” Denella J.
