Bernard Osher Foundation donated $25 million to the California Community College system to award scholarships throughout the state. Funds raised by the California Community Colleges would generate 50 percent in matching funds from the Bernard Osher Foundation. and she had to return to work� After her husband found employment, she was ready to resume her education and enrolled in the CADD program at FCC� Svetlana intends to work with interior designers using her new skills� Cindy Alicia Quiralte served as president of the Associated Student Government for the 2011-2012 school year� Cindy was a true role model for other students and especially for other young women� After high school, Cindy enrolled in her local community college, but didn’t do well� She eventually found her way to Fresno City College and flourished both academically and through her extra-curricular activities� She says it was a political science instructor who suggested that she might consider going to law school� The encouragement gave her a new prospective on her college life and future� She says that this was the first time that someone had acknowledged her intelligence� With newfound confidence, she became active in college clubs and politics becoming president of M�E�Ch�A� and being elected president of the entire student body� She was also a member of the Puente Program� Cindy transferred to the University of California, Riverside and continues to be active in student advocacy speaking to state legislators and at conferences on the concerns of students and issues regarding the state of higher education� Donor: Curtis Davies BUSinESS DiViSiOn Donor: Gervase and Sherian Eckenrod Joshwin Greene began taking classes at FCC while in high school� He graduated in May with two Associate in Science degrees, in mathematics and computer networking� Joshwin has now earned three degrees at Fresno City College� In 2010, he was awarded an Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts� He is also completing classes to receive CISCO certification� Joshwin is planning to transfer to UC Irvine in the fall of 2013 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Computer Game Science, with a minor in digital arts� He also plans to pursue a Master's Degree in Computer Science� His career goal is to become a skilled programmer� Joshwin has been an officer and a very active member of FCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society� In March he was selected for the 2012 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Academic First Team� He is also a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society� While excelling academically, his teachers have said that he has consistently demonstrated a dedicated, focused, and driven attitude that will no doubt lead to many future successes� 8 • 2012 Dean’s Medallion Award Recipients Donor: 2010 Renaissance Feast for Scholars finE, pERfORMinG & COMMUniCATiOn ARTS DiViSiOn Donor: 2010 Renaissance Feast for Scholars Music has always been a big part of Pamela Galicia’s life� Growing up in a family of musicians, her father and his brothers played the saxophone and her mother was a cellist, it was inevitable that Pamela would become a musician herself� Pamela, who plays in a Mariachi band with her husband, found that she had to cut back on performing after the birth of her first child� With the birth of a second child, Pamela decided that she needed to find a stable job and decided to pursue a higher education� Because she had always liked working with children and had taught music, sometimes for free, she set out to become a credentialed music educator� She has also helped with the Mariachi and orchestra at her former high school and taught music at a local community center� Now, the mariachi, mother and music teacher is continuing her studies at California State University, Fresno� She says that music has always been her passion and she enjoys watching children grow and learn� She has found her calling� DEAn’S MEDALLiOn AWARDS SpRinG 2012 AWARD RECipiEnTS We all know that earning a college education is not easy. Besides the normal time and money constraints, many students also face life changing obstacles. Despite facing some of these barriers, this year’s seven Dean’s Medallion Award winners have excelled academically and shown great fortitude to complete their degrees. hEALTh SCiEnCES DiViSiOn MATh, SCiEnCE AnD EnGinEERinG DiViSiOn Melanie Contreras is an ambitious single mother of four� She is the first person in her family to earn a college degree� Her long term goal is to become a medical doctor� This is a goal she has had since childhood� She always thought that she would like to become an anesthesiologist, but after completing the Respiratory Care program at Fresno City College she may go into another field of medicine� Melanie says she is considering another career option—becoming a pulmonologist� As part of her studies, Melanie has met physicians specializing in the respiratory system who greatly inspired her� She has been able to utilize her skills to help people in the community with possible health risks by volunteering at her church and providing information on how and where to get help� Her journey has been met with many obstacles, but Melanie is a driven individual who is determined to reach her goals and make a better life for herself and her children� She says the rewards of getting a college education will be endless� Lance Truong is a remarkable young man with a bright future� But it wasn’t always that way� When Lance was in high school, he was told by a counselor that he wasn’t “college material�” Lance was determined to prove that counselor wrong and began taking classes at Fresno City College� Although unprepared for college academics, Lance persevered and found the success as a student that eluded him in high school� As his confidence grew, Lance became more involved in college life� As a two-term president of the Pre-Health Society, he coordinated many projects and fostered working relations with multiple organizations beyond the campus� He was instrumental in organizing the Tzu Chi Health Fair bringing needed medical assessment to lower income residents� Lance also worked on campus as a chemistry lab assistant and dedicated his time as a volunteer at local hospitals� At FCC, Lance maintained a 3�5 GPA while handling, work, extracurricular and demanding family responsibilities� This fall, Lance transferred to the University of California, Davis to pursue a degree in Cell Biology� He plans to become a physician� Donor: Health Science Division hUMAniTiES DiViSiOn Donor: 2010 Renaissance Feast for Scholars Denise Vela graduated this spring with two associate degrees: one in Humanities and the other in Social Science� She transferred to Fresno State this fall where she is majoring in English literature� Denise loves literature and history� She took almost every literature class offered during her time at Fresno City College� Denise, a published poet, plans to one day teach English in junior high or high school� She said that’s where we lose students and they give up, so she wants to be there to encourage and inspire them to stay in school� Denise is no stranger to working� She has been a full-time student while working full-time managing a golf course restaurant in Dinuba� She’s held up to three jobs at a time since she was 15 years old supporting her younger sister who is also a FCC student� In addition to school and work, Denise tutors peers and family� She has organized and conducted Conflict Mediation seminars� She is active in national and local politics, conducting voter registration and writing newspaper editorials� Donor: Dr. Ray Cramer Scholarship SOCiAL SCiEnCES DiViSiOn Donor: Dr. Margaret E. Mericle Cleadus Shelton’s life story is one of redemption and second chances� At the age of 15 Cleadus dropped out of high school and lead a life of drug addiction, homelessness and incarceration� After serving time in prison, Cleadus was mandated by the state of California to WestCare residential treatment; it changed his life� It was at WestCare that Cleadus saw hanging on the wall the Dean’s Medallion of a former recipient� He was inspired and determined to win his own Dean’s Medallion Award� That brought him to Fresno City College� Cleadus began classes in the fall of 2008 with the goal becoming a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor� A year later, he joined the Alpha Gamma Sigma honor society and eventually was elected president� Since 2010, Cleadus has been working at Westcare, first as one of only two statewide AmeriCorp service members, then as a counselor, and now as a program coordinator and supervisor� He plans to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work so he can continue to serve others� 2012 Dean’s Medallion Award Recipients • 9 fRESnO CiTY COLLEGE SChOLARShip AppLiCATiOn inSTRUCTiOnS hOW TO AppLY Applications must be submitted online by March 2nd. Ben Staton Memorial Scholarship One $500 scholarship will be awarded ($250 each semester) to a student who is a child of a disabled or deceased veterans of any branch of the armed forces. The student must be enrolled in at least nine (9) units and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. This scholarship was established by the Green Hope Veterans. Their mission is to enable veterans, seniors, and youths to become self-sufficient through job training in environmental business opportunities. Stiner Scholarship One $500 scholarship has been established ($250 per semester in fall 2013 and spring 2014) for a female student pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Library Technology, literature, or creative writing. The student must have completed 12 units with a minimum GPA of 2.8. The scholarship commemorates Bernice Stiner's 90 th birthday celebrated in November 2012. Bernice attended FCC and earned an A.A. Degree and Certificate in Library Technology then went on to work in several Fresno public school libraries. She greatly enjoyed and benefited from this program and believes in the philosophy of life-long learning and giving back to her community. Betty Elliott Nursing Scholarship One $300 scholarship will be awarded to a Fresno City College registered nursing student that demonstrates a high level of professionalism and may wish to pursue a BSN or MSN. The student must have a GPA of at least a 3.0 and have financial need. This scholarship was established to honor Betty Elliott, who retired from St. Agnes Medical Center after 36 years of service. Betty worked in the ICU and has devoted 32 years to the care of cardiovascular patients. She was asked to launch the Cardiac Cath Lab Program at St. Agnes in 1972 and has contributed to the success of its Cardiovascular Programs. She will be remembered for being a dedicated nurse who contributed to saving thousand of lives. Betty Jo McCully Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established by the McCully family to honor wife, mother, and grandmother Betty Jo McCully. Betty Jo received her bachelor’s degree from Stetson in 1949, which included a program of teacher training. Throughout her life, Betty Jo derived great joy from practicing her craft as a teacher. The lives of many youngsters were enriched by the experience of having Mrs. McCully as their fourth grade teacher. Betty Jo taught for a total of 30 years, mostly in the Fresno Unified School District. Her teaching career included a period of service as a mentor teacher as well as several years teaching English as a second language to Southeast Asian students. In addition to her passion for teaching, Betty Jo was a great lover of music. Her love of music began as a child when she would open the window to her upstairs attic bedroom so that she could listen to the music coming from the neighbor’s house next door. In high school, she sang in the chorus. During the last few years of her life, many of her most enjoyable days were spent singing in the chorus with her friends at the Windham retirement community. This $1000 scholarship, given by the McCully family in remembrance of Betty Jo, is part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students. It is designed to encourage a Fresno City College student interested in teaching or music to pursue those dreams just as Betty Jo herself once did. Beverly Nicholes Memorial Scholarship Scholarships awarded, based on funds available, to Native American Indian students attending Fresno City College who demonstrate financial need. This scholarship was established by Gary Nicholes and Candice Corn in memory of their mother for her service to Native American Indian students with learning disabilities. Scholarship Listing • 13 BiLL CAMp MEMORiAL SChOLARShip One $250 scholarship is awarded each year to a sophomore who has competed in cross country at FCC and who has exemplified the leadership and courage displayed by former FCC student athlete, Bill Camp� Awards are given upon completion of their sport eligibility� In 1967, Bill was an 18-year old cross-country runner on the Fresno City College track team� His coach wrote of him that he was not blessed with speed but made up for it with strength, endurance and heart� His best performances were in the toughest races� He won the FCC Outstanding Cross Country Runner Award that year, as voted by his teammates and coaches� One year later, in 1968, Bill was a Marine fire-team leader in Vietnam� He was killed while leading an assault on a village suspected of harboring enemy positions� Bill was the point-man, the toughest and most dangerous job� His Platoon Commander wrote “just to be in his presence was to bask in the warmth he generated as a person� Bill’s sincerity and good will so attracted the other Marines of his platoon that they sought to emulate him�” He also wrote that during the assault, Bill never wavered, even though he was aware of the danger awaiting him ahead� His courage was matchless as he crawled forward to bring suppressive fire to bear on the enemy� It was in this, his last act of valor, that Bill was mortally wounded� This scholarship was established by his mother, Mrs� Margaret Camp� BOB AnD MARGARET BRADLEY “fRiEnDS Of ThE nURSES” SChOLARShip Bob and Margaret Bradley are members of the 40/8 American Legion Post 38� La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, an independent fraternal organization of Veterans, popularly known as the FORTY ET EIGHT(40/8) was organized in 1920 as the fun and honor society of the American Legion� Now composed of the Veterans of both World Wars, the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts, Panama, Granada, and Desert Storm, it draws its origin from World War I from Fresno City College’s Police Academy in November 2002 and was hired by the Fresno Police Department in their Patrol Division� On July 31, 2006, while riding on patrol, Officer Nieto attempted to stop a vehicle and was shot three times by the driver� Office Nieto was gravely injured and was hospitalized in critical condition for three weeks� In June 2007, Brian was presented the Van Meter Award from the Fresno Police Department� As of August 2008, Brian had to retire because of his injuries and officially signed off in February 2009� Through officer Nieto’s valiant effort to survive ready with a word of encouragement� He inspired countless students to read, write, travel, and build better lives� This scholarship is a tribute to Charles L� Moran, retired FCC instructor, who has a be selected by FCC dance instructor and scholarship sponsor� Clare Lauche Porter passed away on January 18, 2000 at the age of 86� She devoted the major portion of her life to the world of Dance, predominately ballet� She joined the San Francisco Opera ballet the year of its inception, studying with the world renowned Adolph Bolm� Clare studied ballet with Olga Preobajenska in 1937 and in 1940 traveled to Paris where she danced with the Paris Opera Ballet� Upon returning to San Francisco, over the next several years, she taught, performed and had two daughters� Clare and her children moved to Fresno and in the 1960’s where she founded the Fresno Dance Repertory Association which consisted of three separate dance companies, one of which was the Fresno Civic Ballet� In the 1970’s she founded the Dance Theatre of Fresno� Clare maintained very high production values� Many of her former students have gone on to perform and teach� The best known from the Valley are Carolyn Carlson, Kathy Mulligan-Birnbaum, Kathy Bliss and Michael Thomas� Ms� Porter retired in 1980 but remained involved in coaching until well into her 70’s when she moved to Seattle to live with her daughter� Deans Medallion Award For Social Sciences Division A $500 award will be given each May to a graduate or transfer student majoring in any Social Science field. The Scott Murray Memorial Foundation was established as a tribute to Scott Murray who graduated from the Fresno City College Police Academy in 2000. Scott began his career with the Madera County Sheriff’s Department in 2001. In 2005 he became a field training officer and held that position until he joined the Madera County Gang Task Force in 2006. Deputy Murray was an accomplished peace officer with a portfolio of cleared cases but he was never one to brag about his accomplishments. When he took the oath of office he did what he set out to do, simply serve and protect. Scott was well liked and respected not only by his department but by the citizens he served. This Foundation was established by his widow, Kristie Murray, and Scott’s family. Diane Bien Memorial Scholarship One $100 scholarship will be awarded to a second year, full-time female student majoring in Real Estate and/or Real Estate related courses such as Business, Accounting, Engineering, or Marketing. This scholarship was established by Fresno Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) in memory of Diane Bien who was instrumental in forming the local Fresno CREW organization. DOLPHAS TROTTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Dolphas Trotter Memorial Scholarship, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, will award a $1000 scholarship to a full-time student at Fresno City College who has completed 24 college units. Students must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and major in Education or History. The student must also have been awarded the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver for the award year. Viable candidates must have competed in high school varsity athletics, actively volunteers in their community and/or participates in the FCC student government. Dolphas’s performance in the Fresno City-County All-Star game during his senior year in high school earned him a football scholarship at College of the Pacific, later renamed, University of Pacific. He returned to Fresno, upon graduation from UOP in 1962, and worked for Fresno County Social Services. It was during this time he met his wife-to-be Shirley Morrison. Shortly thereafter he was drafted into the Army where he served and was honorably discharged in 1969. After being discharged from the Army he received his true calling… education. His first assignment at Franklin Elementary School was as a fifth grade teacher. He taught there before moving on to Edison High School where he quickly ascended the ranks and became an Assistant Principal. After several years he became the first African American principal at Edison High School in Fresno Unified School District. Later he would serve as principal of Tioga and Cooper Middle Schools. In 1991 he left the school sites and became an Administrator for Fresno Unified School District. Five years later he was appointed to Assistant Superintendent. After a long and successful career with Fresno Unified School District, it was voted that Dolphas would become the first African American Interim Superintendent and once again the first in such a post. Dolphas received several accolades during his time in education and sat on many boards and organizations including the State Center Community College Foundation Board. He enjoyed life and all that it held inclusive of the people around him. He only spoke of good in people and had 3 personal pillars which were: family, faith, and football. He believed that you love your family no matter what; always keep your faith; and live life on the 1 yard line…meaning to enjoy life in its entirety! A 2.5 GPA will be required. Preference will be given to an immigrant student who is here permanently. Dr. Lohne migrated from Norway to the United States of America, just after the second world war. Many persons helped him on his way from Norway, as the son of a poor farmer, to becoming a teacher and doctor of respiratory medicine. In 1972, Dr. Lohne became the Medical Director of Valley Medical Center and Fresno City College’s Respiratory Care Program. Additionally, he has served as Assistant Chief of Medicine and Chairman of the Respiratory Studies Committee at University Medical Center; Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco; and Clinical Professor of Medicine at USC. Under his tutelage these programs have and will continue to educate thousands of healthcare clinicians to serve the Central San Joaquin Valley. It was his desire to provide some level of relief for individuals who found themselves similarly situated; those immigrants with the burning desire for an education and a financial need to achieve their educational end. ERNIE SHELTON JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP A $1000 scholarship ($500 each semester) will be awarded to a full-time 2nd year player (with 24 units completed) on the FCC Men’s or Women’s Basketball team who has the most financial need. The recipient must have also maintained a GPA of 2.5 or better. As part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, recipients must be eligible for the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver for the award year. Awards will be given half in fall and half in spring. This scholarship was established by Dorothy “Dottie” Smith, to memorialize Ernie Gene Shelton Jr., his love of the students and his love of basketball. Mr. Shelton was the Director of Veterans Services and Student Outreach Services for CSUF and an instructor at FCC teaching the first Black Gospel choir class. He also was the FCC Basketball Team Volunteer Assistant Coach. Ethel McCormack Memorial ScholarshipAdaptive Ornamental Horticulture Program One $300 scholarship will be awarded to a student who is enrolled in one Adaptive Horticulture class at Fresno City College during the semester of the award. A letter of recommendation is required from instructor, Jerry Hentzler. Student must show financial need and demonstrated community involvement. A GPA of 2.5 or better is required. This scholarship was established by the Fresno County Women’s Chamber of Commerce to honor Ethel McCormack who taught Gregg Shorthand in the Fresno City College Business Division for many years. Ethel McCormack was past president of the Fresno County Women’s Chamber of Commerce and a very active member. She will be remembered for her years of dedicated service to the Garden Give and Take, which she and a group of her friends founded in 1968. Mrs. Fiorani was employed by Fresno City College for 57 years where she served in the role of Production Department Supervisor. She was also very involved in the social and sports functions of the college, planning many of the events. Excellence in Food Service Scholarship One scholarship will be awarded to a student interested in furthering his/ her studies in the field of food service. Recipient must have a GPA of 2.5 or better. Part-time enrollment is acceptable. This scholarship has been established by David and Silvia Racki. Silvia Racki, a professional chef, has been involved in the food service industry most of her life. She is a 20 year veteran from the CSU-Fresno Food Service Association and was instrumental in opening up the Vintage Room on that campus. Prior to that she was the Banquet Manager for the Double Tree Hotel in Monterey. Currently, since its opening in 2003, Mrs. Racki works as a chef for the various food service venues of the Chukchansi Resort and Casino in Coarsegold. Fakhar Saleem Elahi Memorial Scholarship One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the Fresno City College Nursing program or the Radiological Technology program. Student must be in their second year of the program and be awarded the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver. Recipients must also maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. This scholarship was established by Dr. Cicely Elahi Roberts in honor of her brother, Fakhar Saleem Elahi, who passed away at the age of 18 years old and did not have a chance to develop his potential on this earth. Dr. Roberts would like to offer this opportunity to another student to work in the best profession in the world. This scholarship is part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students. FCC Associated Students Scholarship (New Students) The Associated Student Government recognizes the significant contribution new students bring forth in the academic advancement of the entire FCC student body. With this in mind, the ASG will be awarding scholarships to graduating high school seniors based on their leadership and scholastic achievement. Purchase of the Associated Student Body Card is required. FCC Associated Students Scholarship (Returning Students) The Associated Student Government, with the goal of enhancing the college experience of the entire FCC student body will be awarding scholarships to returning FCC students based on leadership, academic achievement and their ability to contribute to the college. Returning students who apply must have at least 12 units completed and must purchase the Associated Student Body card. FCC Child Development Scholarship One $1000 scholarship ($500 per semester) will be awarded to a student majoring in Child Development with the goal of completing an Associate of Science Degree in the major. Additional requirements: 1. Student must have completed a minimum of 12 units of degree applicable child development coursework prior to award. 2. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 3. Must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units leading to the completion of an AS degree in Child Development during each semester the scholarship is awarded. To demonstrate the commitment of the recipient, the second semester of funding requires completion of 12 units with a 3.0 GPA during the first semester of award. Commemorating the long history of academic excellence at Fresno City College, the FCC Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to deserving students based on their scholastic achievement, involvement in community service and on available funds. Fig Garden Rotary Club Scholarship Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to full-time continuing Fresno City College students with a 3.0 GPA. Students must demonstrate their community service involvement and have financial need. Preference will be given to those who have overcome a major obstacle in life prior to college. Candidates must answer this test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, and asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Fig Garden Women’s Club Scholarship The Fig Garden Women’s Club is a service organization formed in 1921 by fifteen young women in the far north end of Fresno. Their clubhouse is located on Christmas Tree Lane and was built in 1926-27 following a fundraising by members. One such activity included the packing and selling of figs. The club contributes to at least fifteen community organizations. A feature activity is serving coffee and cookies on Christmas Tree Lane on the initial “walkabout day.” The club, recognizing the acute need for nurses, will be awarding $500 scholarships to students enrolled in Fresno City College’s nursing program. A 3.0 GPA is required and must be maintained to continue eligibility. First California Federal Credit Union One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a full-time FCC student who maintains a 3.0 GPA. Student must be a member in good standing of First California Federal Credit Union. This scholarship is established to assist a member of the oldest Credit Union in California in achieving their educational dream. Frederick Edward Jaso Veterans Scholarship Scholarships will be awarded based upon funds available to students enrolled at least half-time with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5. This scholarship is intended for Veterans who have served in any branch and are majoring in a field that involves serving others. Submission of the DD214 is required to verify veteran status. This scholarship was established by the family of Frederick E. Jaso to honor his love of learning, and serving others. Scholarships continue to be funded by family, friends and fundraising. Frederick had a special way with people and had a gift for helping everyone feel a sense of belonging and self-worth. He is most known for his incredible patience when it came to teaching others. His gift for understanding people helped others feel that they had contributions to make, whether it was telling a story, lending a book or just listening. He was an entrepreneur who did many things and nothing was impossible to learn. Frederick earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Fresno City College and encouraged others to continue their education. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War (conflict) and earned numerous medals among them the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Additional consideration will be given to graduates of Caruthers, Riverdale or Washington Union High School. An essay on the topic, “How my experience in the service has prepared me for college” is required. Fresno African American Municipal Employee Scholarship Two $400 scholarships will be awarded to African American students attending Fresno City College full-time. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required. FRESNO/CLOVIS NEW CAR DEALERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP Six $1000 scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled full-time in a post- secondary mechanical automotive technician training program (auto body repair programs are excluded). Awards will be prorated to a minimum of half-time enrollment. Students must have at least 24 college units completed and be eligible for the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver during the award year. Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, and have a valid California Drivers License to be eligible. A DMV Motor Vehicle report will be required from all applicants prior to award. The Fresno/Clovis New Car Dealers Association Scholarship, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, was established by the Fresno/ Clovis New Car Dealers Association to promote enrollment and ensure a successful career in the field of Automotive Technology. Fresno County Archaeological Society Scholarship Two $500 scholarships are available to students attending half-time studying antiquities, such as Anthropology, Art History, Archaeology, or Cultural Geography. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. This scholarship was established to encourage investigation into the human past in a responsible and culturally sensitive manner. The Fresno County Archaeological Society (FCAS) has promoted interest in archaeology in the Central Valley for over 25 years. This scholarship is offered by the FCAS to encourage students to undertake study in the field of Anthropological Archaeology. Fresno Gem and Mineral Society Scholarship The Fresno Gem and Mineral Society will be awarding scholarships to students who have successfully completed 12 or more units majoring in Geology or Earth Science. Students must have successfully completed Geology 1 at the time of application. At least part-time enrollment and a 2.5 GPA or better is required. The Fresno Gem and Mineral Society is a local organization that promotes the study of gems, minerals, fossils and lapidary arts. The organization established this scholarship to provide students majoring in Geology or Earth Science at Fresno City College with financial support. Scholarship recipients normally become members of the Gem and Mineral Society and generally volunteer at the fair to raise money for more scholarships. Fresno Hispanic Scholarship Fund The Fresno Hispanic Scholarship Fund (FHSF) was founded in 1988. It is supported by public and private funding sources and civic fund-raising activities. The long-term goal of the FHSF is to continue to provide a scholarship program to serve students in the San Joaquin Valley. This organization has awarded over $134,000 to San Joaquin Valley students since it began in 1988. They also annually award a percentage of the local funds raised to Fresno City College Latino Faculty & Staff Association, through the FCC Scholarship Program, which administers the applications and selection of FCC students to receive $500 scholarships, if funds are available. This scholarship was established to promote the paralegal profession, continuing education of paralegals and to assist the legal community. Fresno Printing Craftsmen Scholarship A $500 scholarship will be awarded ($250 each semester) to a Fresno City College student pursuing a career in Graphic Communication, particularly as it pertains to printing. Eligible students must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Therefore, after all other requirements have been met, preference will be given to a student enrolled in GRC 19-Work Experience (Cooperative), Occupational; GRC 21-Projects/Graphics Production Methods 2; or GRC 59-Technical Commercial Art. This scholarship was established by the former members of the Fresno Club of Printing House Craftsmen who are fulfilling their motto of “Share Your Knowledge” by sponsoring this scholarship to assist local students in studying the craft of printing. Fresno Unified Council PTA Scholarship Two $200 scholarships awarded to graduates of the Fresno Unified School District who have maintained a 3.0 GPA and are enrolling at Fresno City College. This scholarship was established to help students who may not otherwise be financially able to attend college. Friends of the Arts (FOTA) Scholarship Awards will be made based on criteria set forth by each department in the Fine, Performing and Communication Arts Division (Dance, Theatre, Music and Arts). Friends of the Arts at Fresno City College is an organization that raises money which funds special projects in the Fine and Performing Arts. The organization funds student scholarships, provides master classes, brings guest artists to campus, helps to send students to events in other states and countries, and increases our endowment to insure future support. Garen K. Milton Memorial Scholarship One scholarship is available to a music student enrolled at Fresno City College with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Amount is based on funds available. Garen Milton, former FCC DSP&S Counselor, passed away in 1999. He had a passion for playing the French horn. Gary Soto Scholarship Two $750 scholarships will be awarded to second-year students with a Liberal Arts major anticipating a career in teaching. A GPA of at least 2.75 is required. Applicants could have graduated from any community high school just outside of Fresno and should have the career goal of teaching at the grade-school level. A short essay on the topic “Why I want to be a teacher” is required. Gary Soto is a writer, not a teacher. Gateway Eagles Scholarship One $600 scholarship will be awarded ($300 fall/$300 spring) to a Fresno City College student who graduated from Gateway High School. This scholarship was established by a retired Fresno City College administrator and his wife to provide assistance to students who might otherwise not be able to further their education. Additionally, this will honor their son who is a Gateway High School graduate. Gerald Farrington History/Political Science Scholarship One $100 scholarship awarded to a second year student majoring in history/political science. Must have financial need and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Student will be interviewed by the History/Political Science Department. This scholarship was funded by Mr. Gerald Farrington, History/Political Science Instructor at Fresno City College, with the hope it would encourage and reward students majoring in history/political science. Geraldine Wheeler Scholarship One scholarship awarded to a full-time FCC student with a minimum GPA of 2.5. This was established to honor Geraldine Wheeler, member of Fresno Unified School Board at the time Fresno City College was started. Glenn Hippenstiel Memorial Scholarship Scholarships available to deserving full-time 2nd year students (male or female) enrolled at Fresno City College and playing on the tennis team. Awards will be given upon completion of their sport eligibility. This scholarship was established in memory of Glenn Hippenstiel, national age group champion, longtime leader of tennis activities and active competitor in tennis. GO GREEN SCHOLARSHIP One $1000 scholarship will be awarded ($500 each semester) to a fulltime Fresno City College student with a minimum GPA of 2.8 who has qualified for the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver for the award year. Students must have completed at least 24 college units before award year, demonstrate financial need, and be active in conservation/environmental issues, or participate in recycling on campus or in the community. The Go Green Scholarship, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, was established by Dorothy “Dot” Sedley who has been involved with recycling on our campus and in our community since 1998. Dot has contributed to many local charities and now channels her proceeds to Fresno City College where each day she helps in the recycling process. Granville Homes Scholarship Up to five $1000 scholarships will be awarded each year to students attending at least 9 units in the Construction Program at Fresno City College. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must maintain that GPA throughout the award year. A letter of recommendation from the Construction Program Instructor is recommended. This scholarship was established by Granville Homes, Inc. to assist and encourage students in their current or future employment in the building industry. Granville Homes is a local, custom home builder working in the Fresno area for over thirty years. electronics and communications or computer science and technology with a minimum GPA of 3�0� Candidates must be a verified U�S� Citizen and a California Resident� Mr� Fries served the State Center Community College District for 31 years, retiring in August 1987� He was a radio and electronics instructor, a college counselor, and Director of Research and Planning for Fresno City College� He established the short wave amateur radio station WA6DBI for the FCC campus and was an active ham radio operator for 55 years� A native of Fresno, he graduated from Roosevelt High School, attended U�C� Berkeley, Utah State, and California State University, Fresno where he received his administrative credential and master’s degree, graduating with honors� He enlisted in the U�S� Air Force in December 1941, and served as a bomber pilot in World War II� He was recalled to active duty as a communications officer during the Korean War and retired from the U�S�A�F� Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel� Community activities included membership in the Rotary Club of Fresno, Chamber of Commerce, Fresno State Bulldog Foundation, Central California DX Club and American Radio Relay League� He coordinated and leadership performance� Dr� Karl Falk was a distinguished member of the Fresno education and business communities for many years� He served as interim president of California State University, Fresno(CSUF), was a longtime faculty member at CSUF, and was a member of the Fresno City College Occupational Educational Advisory Committee for nearly 20 years� In addition to his many valuable accomplishments and contributions to higher education, Dr� Karl Falk was a national champion of low-cost housing, and a benefactor of a variety of other local, national and international causes, $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a Fresno City College female student majoring in Child Development with a minimum GPA of 2�5� Preference will be given to Hmong students� This scholarship was established by Michael Thornton to honor his late wife, Ku Yang Thornton, who had a passion for teaching pre-school children� Ku was born in Laos during the period of war� She and her family were some of the first Hmong refugees who came to the United States in 1976� Her brother instilled in her the importance of a good education and she was the first female in her family to go to college� Ku attended Fresno City College and graduated with an Associate of Science-Child Center Permit in 1996� She was selected to become a Mentor Teacher at FCC� She was very proud to be an Early Childhood Educator and to make a difference in the lives of young children� Ku mentored student teachers and encouraged them to let the children explore the world around them� Ku transferred to Fresno Pacific University and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Management and Organizational Development in 2000� She later attended National University where she obtained her teaching credential� She then taught Kindergarten for Fresno Unified School District� In the prime of her life, she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away less than a year later on May 23, 2011� Her husband, Michael, also attended Fresno City College and continued in school through the graduate level� He is currently teaching elementary students for Fresno Unified School District� They both loved their time here at Fresno City College as well as teaching for Fresno Unified� Michael is giving back by offering scholarships to the students going through the child development program who will one day make a difference in the lives of other young children� LA SOCiETE DES QUARAnTE hOMMES ET hUiT ChEVAUx SChOLARShip (40/8) La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, an independent fraternal organization of Veterans, popularly known as the FORTY ET EIGHT, was organized in 1920 as the fun and honor society of the American Legion� Now composed of the Veterans of both World Wars, the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts, Panama, Granada, and Desert Storm, it draws its origin from World War I when young Americans were sent to France to fight a war to end all wars� The narrow gauge railroads of France had boxcars (Voitures) that carried little more than half the capacity of American boxcar and these voitures were used to transport men and horses to and from the fighting fronts� On the side of these little boxcars was stenciled the capacity of each� Holding either forty men or eight horses, these voitures became the trademark of our organization� If you could laugh at the train ride from the coast of France to the trenches crowded in these little boxcars, only recently vacated by eight horses, one could surely adapt to the changes in his life when he returned home� Membership in the Forty et Eight is by invitation only for recognition of service to the American Legion and/or its programs� In 1955, the Voyageurs Militaire recognized the shortage of Registered Nurses and began to provide the financial assistance in scholarships to those who enrolled for this training� With more than 2088 students receiving over $750,000 in scholarships this past year, the FORTY ET EIGHT has granted in Technology at Fresno City College, has noticed a lack of women applicants for technology positions within the State Center Community College District and Lesley would like to see more females pursuing AnD DEnniS CAYWOOD SChOLARShip Scholarship awarded up to $400 ($200 per semester) to a student enrolled in the FCC Nursing Program who can demonstrate financial need and who has maintained a minimum GPA of 2�5� This scholarship was established by Pam Orique� OffiCER STEphAn GRAY MEMORiAL SChOLARShip fOR pOLiCE ACADEMY STUDEnTS Stephan Gray graduated from the Fresno City College Police Academy in December of 1996� He was then hired by the Merced Police Department in May of 1997� While employed by Merced, Stephan strived for law enforcement excellence by continuing to challenge himself and working relentlessly toward goals he had set for himself� He received the Life Saving Accommodation Medal in July 1999 for saving the life of an eleven month old infant� In 2000 he graduated from the SWAT tactical school and joined the departments’ SWAT team� He was a Special Operations and Gang Task Force Unit officer from 1999 to 2004� From 2002 to 2004 he was the Arcon combat instructor for the department� Stephan was nominated for Police Officer of the Year in both 2002 and 2003 by his peers� Stephan was accredited by the State of California judicial system and deemed an expert regarding gang activity� With this expertise, when Stephan testified, a gang enhancement sentence could be added and resulted in a 25 year addition to the convicted sentence� His passion for police work ended on April 15, 2004 when he was shot twice and killed while attempting to pursue a suspect on foot� 30 • Scholarship Listing One $500 scholarship will be awarded at the end of the Spring semester to a current full time student majoring in music� Candidates pursuing an A�A� degree or a certificate in music from Fresno City College must be planning to transfer as a music major to a 4-year college, conservatory, or university� If transferring the next fall term, students must provide proof of acceptance from the school of their choice� Students must apply through the FCC online scholarship process by March 2nd� Auditions with the Fresno City College Music Department will be held in mid-March by the music faculty� The presentation of the award will be made at the Spring semester Honors Recital� pARLOR LECTURE CLUB SChOLARShip Two $500 scholarships ($250 each semester) will be awarded to female students at Fresno City College majoring in any area of study to improve education, health, and community service� Must have financial need without additional financial aid or scholarships and a minimum GPA of 2�5 or better� Students must plan on working in the San Joaquin Valley area after graduation� The Parlor Lecture Club of Fresno, organized in 1894, was one of the largest and most progressive clubs of Northern California� The Parlor Lecture Club was first housed at 1350 Van Ness Ave where not only club sessions were held but where social events and lectures by famous writers, musicales by well known artists and where activities of civic and community interest were held� Parlor Lecture Club members were committed to enrich the lives of our students by their fundraising efforts� Patrick Joseph Sanchez Memorial Scholarship One $500 scholarship awarded ($250 each semester) to a Fresno City College Registered Nursing student who demonstrates financial need and maintains a minimum GPA of 2.5. Patrick Joseph Sanchez, a graduate of the FCC Registered Nursing Program, cared deeply for his patients and took comfort in helping them and others. Paul and Donna Duckworth Scholarship The Paul and Donna Duckworth Scholarship, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, will award a $1000 scholarship ($500 each semester) annually to a full-time student at Fresno City College majoring in the fields of Math, Science, and/or Engineering. Students must have 24 college units completed prior to award year, a minimum GPA of 2.5, and be granted the Board of Governor’s fee waiver for the award year. Students must also demonstrate financial need. Students should be on track at FCC and plan to transfer to a university to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in MS&E. Consideration will be made for students who are self supporting and/or working while in school or during the summer. Pay It Forward/Don and Carol Munshower Scholarship The Pay It Forward/Don and Carol Munshower Scholarship is a process by which an initial donor awards financial assistance to the initial recipient and passes the responsibility for the replication of the donation in like amount to two additional recipients when the initial recipient is financially able. The next set of recipients will be held responsible to duplicate the initial donation so that each set of recipients will be multiplied by two. Each recipient must agree to follow this procedure by offering these scholarships in their local community college at a time when they are financially able. This $1000 scholarship will be awarded based upon full-time enrollment, a 2.75 GPA in a degree applicable course with no more than 2 PE classes to be included in GPA, financial need, and the promise of future success. This commitment will ensure that each of us will do more within our community by committing to a process that is greater than ourselves. Supersad Nursing Scholarship Scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in the Fresno City College Registered Nursing program. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 to be eligible and be awarded the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver for the award year. This scholarship was established by Pearl D. Supersad and her friends upon her retirement from Fresno City College on April 29, 2011 and is part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students. Pearl has worked for Fresno City College for 40 years as the Department Secretary of the Humanities Division. This scholarship honors Pearl’s daughter, Jill, who graduated from the FCC Registered Nursing Program and has gone on to a rewarding and successful career. Pete P. Peters Nursing Scholarship Two $1000 scholarships awarded ($500 each semester) to students enrolled in the Fresno City College Registered Nursing Program. Students must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be eligible. Mr. Pete P. Peters is the youngest son of Armenian Immigrants and has worked hard to be one of Fresno’s most reputable businessmen and philanthropists. In 1939, Mr. Peters joined Valley Foundry and Machine Works which manufactured winemaking equipment, including tanks, crushers and presses. During WWII, the business made ship winches and valves for the armed forces and the company was later sold to Ametek where Mr. Peters served as Vice President. He has served on numerous boards, including the State Center Community College Foundation, where he is recognized as an Honored Board Member. Because Mr. Peters strongly believes in education and healthcare, he continues to support the FCC Nursing Program. PG & E / C. Robert Martin Scholarship Scholarship awarded up to $500 to a full-time student with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Must be a dependent of a PG&E employee. Philip D. Smith Memorial Scholarship A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a third semester student majoring in Journalism. This scholarship was established to honor Mr. Philip Smith who taught Journalism at Fresno City College for 30 years. He also co-authored a book with his brother, who was a radioman for the Flying Tigers, about WWI General Chennault. Mr. Smith, who passed away in 1993, was also a competitive chess player and avid bridge player. Phil Larson Scholarship Two $500 scholarships will be awarded ($250 each semester) to full-time entering freshman attending Fresno City College who have graduated from any high school located within the boundaries of Fresno County. Students must demonstrate financial need and show promise of academic or vocational excellence. This scholarship was established by Phil Larson, a member of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors. Scholarship Listing • 31 Pilar De La Cruz-Reyes Scholarship Fund One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student in the FCC Registered Nursing Program who has maintained a 3.0 GPA. This scholarship was established in honor of Pilar De La Cruz-Reyes, RN, MSN who retired from the Fresno Heart Hospital/Community Medical Center after 40 years of practice in Nursing Management and Nursing Administration. Ms. De La Cruz-Reyes served as the Chief Nurse Executive at the Fresno Heart Hospital which is California’s first locally owned heart hospital. Pilar received her MSN from CSU Dominguez Hills and has been the recipient of numerous awards in the healthcare industry. She was selected as the “RN of the Year” in 1997 and the recipient of the “Top 10 Business and Professional Women” in 1999. Pilar was most recently presented with the Certificate of Distinction award by the California Healthcare Association and was a 2005 inductee into the Central Valley Nursing Hall of Fame. Porsche Club of America Scholarship Two $250 scholarships are available to second year students who will be Industrial Arts/Automotive majors with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better. Recipients must have the intention of entering the work field after completing the two-year program at Fresno City College. Professional Sales Women Scholarship One scholarship will be awarded based on funds available to a female Business major attending at least part-time. The student must have completed at least 24 units prior to award year with at least a 2.75 GPA. This scholarship was established by the Professional Sales Women Association to financially assist upcoming businesswomen. PROFESSIONAL WOMEN IN BUILDING OF THE BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF FRESNO/MADERA COUNTIES SCHOLARSHIP Scholarships available to students who have completed two semesters in one of the following Applied Technology programs at Fresno City College: Architecture, Building Safety Code, Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD), Construction, and Engineering. Minimum of 12 units and 2.5 GPA is required. This scholarship was established to provide support and encouragement to students pursuing a career in the building industry. Progressive Home Club Scholarship Two $500 scholarships are available to re-entry students with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students that are returning to college after an absence for retraining in the work field. Progressive Home Club is affiliated with the largest women’s organization in the world, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. It was organized in 1919 by a group of ladies who met in their homes therefore creating the name. They were able to build their own clubhouse in 1956. Puente Project Scholarship A scholarship will be awarded to a first year student enrolled in the Puente program at Fresno City College. Students must plan to transfer from Fresno City College to a UC/CSU or private college. Students must be enrolled in the English and Counseling Puente classes during the award year. A GPA of 2.5 or higher is required. The Puente Project is a statewide program offered at Fresno City College to help prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions to earn their degrees and return to the community as leaders and mentors for future generations. Puente students commit to one-year of accelerated writing, sustained counseling, and community supported mentoring. Puente has served students at Fresno City College since 1987. 32 • Scholarship Listing Ray Cramer Scholarship for MS&E Dean’s Medallion Recipients A $500 scholarship will be awarded to the Dean’s Medallion recipient chosen from the Fresno City College Math, Science and Engineering Department each spring. The award will be given at the FCC Dean's Medallion Awards Ceremony each spring along with the Dean’s Medallion awards from each division on campus. Dr. Ray Cramer was a faculty member at Fresno City College for over 38 years. In 1968 he became the Associate Dean of Instruction for the Math, Science & Engineering Division. He was involved in the construction of the MS&E building by gathering the educational specifications. Dr. Cramer retired in January, 1995. Ray Seiler Memorial Scholarship Ray Seiler was FCC’s athletic trainer and equipment manager from 1959 to 1980. He passed away in 1997. It was his wish to award scholarships to outstanding Fresno City College transferring student athletes who have attained excellence in their sport. Male and female athletes will receive a $200 award and a trophy each year. Students will be nominated by each sport head coach and selection will be made by a vote from the head coaches. Coaches may not vote for their nominees. Minimum GPA of 2.0 is required. Selection will occur at the end of Spring semester. Reuben Segal Music Scholarship Scholarship awarded based on funds available at the end of the spring semester to a music major with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Audition before the music faculty is required. This scholarship was established to encourage and keep talented musicians at Fresno City College who will pursue a degree in music. Mr. Segal was a violinist who was a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for 24 years. On the West coast, he was a violinist in the Reno-Lake Tahoe area for many years. Reuben and his wife, FCC Music Instructor, Olga Quercia, performed in recitals together at FCC and in the Fresno area. Richard D. Rose, Ph.D Scholarship A $250 scholarship will be awarded ($125 in fall/$125 in spring) to a qualifying graduate of Central Union or Central Unified High School District with a 3.0 GPA or better. Preference will be given to students demonstrating leadership qualities and community service. This scholarship was established by the family of Richard D. Rose, PhD. Dr. Rose is remembered as a strong and dedicated community college leader. He received his AA degree from Fresno City College and went on to receive degrees from San Francisco State University, California State University, Hayward, San Jose State University, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of San Francisco. He held positions at De Anza College, Santa Rosa Junior College and San Diego Mesa College. In July, 2006 he was appointed as President of Modesto Junior College. He left Modesto JC in December 2009. His career in community colleges lasted 34 years. Dr. Rose passed away in March, 2010 leaving behind a legacy of superior leadership in California community colleges. Richard and Diane Watters Scholarship Four $500 scholarships will be awarded to full-time students majoring in Liberal Arts with a preference toward Humanities or General Studies. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and the potential to succeed. This scholarship was established to support FCC students who may not have the opportunity for an education without such help. It is an endorsement of the value of the community college in our culture. Both Richard and Diane Watters were graduates of Fresno City College who went on to California State University, Fresno for their bachelor’s degrees. Richard then received his law degree from Santa Clara University. They credit much of their success to the start they received at Fresno City College. Robert E. Fargason Memorial Scholarship Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded ($1000 each semester) to fulltime students attending Fresno City College and majoring in vocational education. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.8 or better to remain eligible for the spring portion. Bob was instrumental in helping to develop the Washington Occupational Center which was a program instituted by Fresno Unified School District to offer vocational classes to high school students. He was the teacher in charge of staffing this new program featuring 22 different vocations. He was subsequently employed as a work experience counselor at Bullard High School until his retirement in 1988. Bob was highly esteemed by his peers and his students throughout his 32 years as an educator. He passed away unexpectedly In December, 2011. This scholarship was established by his sister-in-law, Janell Smittcamp-Boldt, in memory of his efforts in assisting students to attain a vocational education. Robert F. and Kathryn S. Price Scholarship One $1000 scholarship will be awarded ($500 per semester) to a first year accounting student. A 2.75 GPA is required and must be maintained for consecutive semester awards, up to five semesters, or until graduation from Fresno City College, whichever is the least time. Student must maintain full-time enrollment for each semester of award. From 1966 to 1968 Bob Price began his accounting career with his first two years of study at Fresno City College. Although he transferred to Fresno State University before getting his AS degree, he completed all of his basic accounting, business law and general studies classes at Fresno City College. Mr. Price went on to receive his Masters Degree in Taxation from San Joaquin College of Law. Bob is the senior partner with Price, Paige and Company Accountancy Firm. He has been a devoted volunteer in the community encouraging people to remember charities in their estate planning. Bob is past president of the Fresno Estate Planning Council, past president of the San Joaquin Valley Planned Gifts Council, and past chair of the San Joaquin Valley “Leave a Legacy” organization among a multitude of volunteer positions. Robert and Aya Kimura Scholarship A $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a fulltime Fresno City College student enrolled in the Nursing Program who maintains a 3.0 GPA. Award amount will be reduced based on less than full-time enrollment. Students must have 24 college units completed, be awarded the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver for the award year, and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have taken Chemistry 3A at Fresno City College prior to acceptance into the Registered Nursing Program. Chemistry Chair, Dr. Kirk Kawagoe, or designee, will assist with the recipient selection process. Recipient must demonstrate maturity and dedication to the nursing profession. This scholarship was established, as part of the Osher Initiative for the California Community College students, by Robert and Aya Kimura to financially assist students reach their educational goals. Robert Kimura majored in Chemistry at UC Berkeley, obtained his Masters at Stanford, and taught Chemistry at Fresno City College for 28 years. He loved teaching and playing golf. Robert H. Kimura Memorial Scholarship One $500 scholarship ($250 each semester) will be awarded to a student majoring in Chemistry at Fresno City College. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required. This scholarship was established by Aya Kimura in memory of her husband, Robert H. Kimura, to financially assist students reach their educational goals. Robert majored in Chemistry at UC Berkeley, obtained his Masters from Stanford, and taught Chemistry at Fresno City College for 28 years. He loved teaching and playing golf. Robert Swanton Scholarship One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a full-time accounting or business major with a 3.0 GPA. The recipient must intend to complete a 4-year degree in accounting or business. This scholarship was established by Robert Swanton, a graduate of California State University, Sacramento in 1972 with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. Bob is also a graduate of Golden Gate University, San Francisco in 1982 with a Masters Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Taxation. Bob joined MYW at its inception and prior to joining the firm, he was a partner at a large, local accounting firm. Mr. Swanton is a member of the national and state CPA Societies. He has served on the board of Fort Washington Country Club and is active with charitable organizations in the area. Robin Jean Fraley Memorial Scholarship Two scholarships are available to full-time students with present or past membership in the International Order of Jobs Daughters. If there are no applicants fulfilling this criteria, consideration will be given to students involved in either the International Order of Rainbow Girls or the Order of DeMolay for Boys. Applicants must provide an online recommendation from one of these groups attesting to their good standing in their Bethel, Assembly or Chapter. Minimum 2.5 GPA is required. Recipients must plan to transfer to a four year college or university. Ron Depry Scholarship The Ron DePry scholarship is awarded to deserving students who wish to pursue careers in Biology, Geology, Botany, Marine Science, Environmental Sciences, Horticulture or Agricultural Sciences. Scholarships up to $500 are awarded once each year ($250 each semester). Candidates must be full-time and majoring in the natural science areas, with a minimum GPA of 2.5. This scholarship was established in the name of Ron DePry, former faculty member in Biology at FCC, who had a lifelong interest in living things and in the environment. RUBY AND MAC MCGINTY MEMORIAL LAW ENFORCEMENT SCHOLARSHIP The Ruby and Mac McGinty Memorial Law Enforcement Scholarship, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, will award a scholarship to a student enrolled in the Fresno City College Police Academy who has already completed 24 college degree applicable units. Candidates must demonstrate financial need and be awarded the Board of Governors fee waiver for the award year. To apply for the fee waiver students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the academic year they are enrolled and be determined eligible by the Financial Aid Office. Consideration will be given for service in any branch of the Armed Forces. Personal attributes displayed during the academy such as leadership or overcoming obstacles to their success will also be considered. This scholarship was established by the McGinty family to financially assist a cadet who has a vision of their future that includes a plan to continue their education following training as a peace officer. Mac McGinty was a World War II combat veteran with service in the South Pacific that found him under enemy fire many times. He felt prepared for a career in law enforcement and went on to graduate number one in his class at the Metropolitan Police Academy. He served as a police officer at the Fresno Police Department as did two family generations after him. Throughout his life, as a member of law enforcement and in his community, he served as an inspiration to overcome life’s obstacles and be a professional law enforcement officer. Mac and Ruby McGinty raised a family of peace officers, many of whom attained advanced educational degrees in the field. Through this scholarship, the McGinty family hopes to motivate and challenge peace officers in the future through higher education recognizing the relationship of police professionalism and educational competency and growth. Scholarship Listing • 33 Russell and Maxine Howland Music Scholarship Scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in the Fresno City College Woodwind Choir and play the flute, oboe, clarinet or bassoon. First and second year students with a minimum GPA of 2.5 are eligible to apply. Applicant must audition and interview with the FCC music scholarship committee. This scholarship was established to aid woodwind students in college and to promote participation in the FCC Woodwind Choir. Russell Howland was the “Father of the Woodwind Choir” movement. He has written many arrangements that are regularly featured in concert by the FCC Woodwind Choir. His wife, Maxine, was his greatest supporter. RUTH ELIZABETH BATT NURSING SCHOLARSHIP Scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in the FCC Registered Nursing Program who maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, demonstrate financial need and be awarded the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver for the award year. Ms. Batt was born in 1914 and passed away in 2007. She was adopted in San Francisco by a couple and raised in Fresno. She attended Roosevelt High School and worked as an interior decorator for Turpins and Garrett Bros. Ms. Batt traveled extensively and loved the arts and the theatre, traveling until the age of 89. Fresno City College records indicate that at the age of 58, she started taking classes in art, history and physical education until Spring Semester of 1981. Ms. Batt left her estate to be divided equally between State Center Community College District and two other non profits organizations. The donation to the State Center Community College Foundation is specifically to be used for the Fresno City College Nursing Program. The Foundation would like to acknowledge the generosity of Ms. Batt and applaud her foresight of planned giving to include State Center Community College Foundation in her will. The Ruth Elizabeth Batt Nursing Scholarship is part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students. Sam Parnagian Memorial Scholarship One $500 scholarship available to a graduate of Fowler High School. Must apply through Fowler High School. Santiago R. “Jim” Escobedo Memorial Scholarship Scholarships awarded, based on funds available, to students enrolled in the Radiologic Technology Program. Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required. Must attend the awards ceremony to receive award. Santiago “Jim” Escobedo founded the Radiologic Technology Program at Fresno City College in 1968. Jim devoted his energies to the establishment and the assured continuance of the program. This scholarship was established to honor his devotion and dedication to the field of Radiologic Technology. Those honored by being selected are individuals who reflect the ideals and characteristics of its founder: service to humanity, respect for the dignity of mankind, and the willingness to care for patients unrestricted by concern of personal attributes or the nature of their illness or disease. Sarah Reyes Leadership Scholarship One $500 award will be available to a full-time student involved in a leadership role such as the Associated Student Government. Student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. This scholarship was established by former Assembly member, Sarah Reyes, a graduate of Fresno City College, to provide resources to students to continue to demonstrate leadership capabilities. SCCCF CHANCELLOR’S CIRCLE SCHOLARSHIP One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a student of State Center Community College District who is enrolled full time. Candidates must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, have 24 degree applicable college units completed, demonstrate financial need and show involvement in a school or professional organization that gives back to the community. Students must also be awarded the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver to be considered. This endowed scholarship, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community 34 • Scholarship Listing College students, was established by the 2011 donations from members of the SCCC Chancellor’s Circle. It is their wish to help make attendance at community college possible for a student who has demonstrated his/her seriousness about obtaining an education. SCHOLARSHIP FOR HUMANITIES The Scholarship for Humanities, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, was established to encourage students to pursue and promote the study of the Humanities. A $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a full-time Fresno City College student majoring in any of the disciplines of Humanities: English, Philosophy, Foreign Languages, Humanities and Linguistics. Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA, have 24 college units completed with at least 12 in Humanities, and be granted the Board of Governor’s fee waiver for the award year. Student must demonstrate a commitment to the study of the humanities by participation in student clubs and/or activities that promote the humanities. Sierra On-Line Scholarship Two $300 scholarships ($150 per semester) available to graduates of Yosemite High and/or a dependent of an employee of Sierra On-Line. Must major in computer information systems with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Steve and Marcia Becker Scholarship for Honors Students One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to students in the Fresno City College Honors Program with a GPA of 3.5. Recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Committee from the applicants who are enrolled in the FCC Honors Program. This award was established by Steve and Marcia Becker. Student Paralegal Association Scholarship One $250 scholarship will be awarded to an active, participating member of the Student Paralegal Association at Fresno City College. The recipient may not be a current Student Paralegal Association officer. The student must have completed at least Paralegal 2A with an overall GPA of 3.0. The recipient may be a full-time student or a part-time student carrying at least six (6) units in the FCC Paralegal Program. This scholarship has been established by the Student Paralegal Association to assist a paralegal student in financing his/her paralegal education. Technology Support Services Scholarship One $500 scholarship will be awarded ($250 each semester) as a Fresno City College Bookstore account to a full-time student majoring in Computer Information Technology or a computer related field. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and be working toward an Associate’s Degree or plan to transfer to a 4-year institution to pursue a degree in a computer related field. Technology Support Services (TSS) provides technology support to students, faculty and staff. TSS is responsible for the campus computer and network infrastructure, as well as providing support to faculty and staff for their technical needs. We provide students with hands-on experience as part of work experience courses taught at the college, as well as paid positions when available through the Federal Work Study Program. TSS is fully committed towards our students and is proud to support them in their future endeavors. Teresa Vargas-Dahill Memorial Scholarship One $1000 scholarship will be awarded ($500 each semester) to a student who has completed the Puente Program at Fresno City College with a 2.9 GPA. Student must be accepted and enrolled full time at a 4-year university or college before award is made. Selection will be made by the Puente Program staff along with Robert Dahill. Student must provide Fall grades and proof of enrollment from university by January 15th to receive the second portion. This scholarship was established by Teresa’s husband, Robert, and son, Christopher, in honor of her commitment to students, particularly those who had completed the FCC Puente program, while she was employed at Fresno City College. ThE ALVARADO GROUp SChOLARShip The Alvarado Group Scholarship, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, will award $1000 scholarships ($500 each semester) to full-time Memorial scholarship, part of the Osher Initiative for California Community College students, will award a $1000 scholarship to a full-time Fresno City College student each year with a minimum GPA of 3�0� Recipient must have 24 college units completed and be awarded the state Board of Governor’s fee waiver during the award year� Mr� Tungrei Chen came to the United States of America (USA) as a foreign student� His ancestors migrated from the Fujian area of the mainland to the island of Taiwan (known as Formosa ) in the late 18th century (after 1760’s), during the era of Qing Dynasty who ruled the mainland� Shaw-Geeu Dawn (陳紹裘), Mr� Chen’s father, and Trua-Hing Dawn (陳蔡杏), Mr� Chen’s mother raised eight children (three sons and five daughters)� Shaw-Geeu Dawn (陳紹裘), was a teacher and encouraged all his children to obtain an education� Trua-Hing Dawn (陳蔡杏), also was supporting them to obtain an education� Many times, Mr� Chen’s mother would save her portion of the scarce rationings of food to ensure that her children received the most nutrition� Both parents made many efforts throughout their life to raise the children� Mr� Chen is very grateful to his parents for all their encouragement and the fact that Americans accepted him as a foreign student and then as an immigrant� Mr� Chen values the fact that students will be able to determine and pursue their correct path in their next stage of their lifecycle by obtaining a good education� Mr� Chen’s parents lived a challenge life and were buried in Taiwan� The memory of their dedicated lives to their children will be carried on through the students who benefit from the support of this scholarship� TOM JOnES MEMORiAL SChOLARShip One $250 scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student with a 3�0 GPA� This scholarship was established by the friends of Tom Jones to honor his memory� Mr� Jones served for many years as a mediator for the California State Mediation and Conciliation Service� TWinS SChOLARShip fOR WOMEn’S SOCCER Two $300 awards will be given to two Fresno City College Women’s Soccer team members as selected by Mr� Jerry Landers for their effort, achievement and no red cards pulled during the sport� Awards will be made as Fresno City College bookstore accounts for the next semester at the end of their second season� Mr� Landers established this scholarship in honor of his twin daughters, Erin and Lauren, who played soccer for Fresno City College in 2002-2003� Erin has since graduated from Fresno Pacific University and Lauren is attending Fresno State� Both played Value Care Expanding Horizons Scholarship Two $500 scholarships will be awarded, $250 each semester, to second year students in the Fresno City College registered nursing program. Recipients must be in good standing and will be selected by the nursing instructors. Virginia McCauley Scholarship One $500 scholarship available to a single parent enrolled in the FCC Nursing Program. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. This scholarship was established by John and Connie Kampschmidt to honor John’s mother, Virginia McCauley, a single parent of four children. John is a graduate of the FCC Nursing Program. Vivi Natali Memorial Scholarship Two $250 scholarships awarded to students who have only completed the first semester of the Registered Nursing Program at FCC. One recipient will be selected at end of Fall and one will be selected at end of Spring by the first semester fundamental instructor. These students must show promise of being fine and caring nurses. This award was established in the honor of the late Mrs. Vivi Natali, an outstanding nursing instructor at Fresno City College. Waterford Foundation Scholarship For Muslim Students Scholarships will be awarded to Muslim students attending at least part time at Fresno City College who are pursuing career building opportunities. Preference will be given to single women with children. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.25 and must maintain that GPA throughout the semesters awarded. At least one letter of recommendation is required from a current or previous instructor. Interviews will be conducted by the Waterford Foundation selection committee. This scholarship was established by the Waterford Foundation, a private, non-profit organization with a mission of making grants to other charitable organizations and impoverished individuals in need of charitable assistance. WEBER BLACKLER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP One $500 scholarship will be awarded ($250 each semester) to a full-time Fresno City College Accounting major.
