Lincolnshire is one of England’s largest counties and it offers many idyllic settings in which
to hold your ceremony.
Whether you would prefer a city with culture, incredible architecture and ancient heritage, a
picturesque town or a pretty village with magical charm, we will have the venue for you.
You can choose from over 70 Licensed Venues which include stately homes, manor houses,
a coastal holiday centre, medieval buildings, grand halls, golf centres, hotels, country houses
and a castle or any of our Lincolnshire Registration Office ceremony rooms.
The county stretches from the natural woodlands and the rolling arable hills and valleys
of the Lincolnshire Wolds, to the open landscape, bulb fields and ‘big skies’ of the fens in
the south, offering peace, tranquillity and plenty of space with coastal charm and miles of
unspoilt blue flag beaches.
Lincolnshire is the home of the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial flight and 617
Squadron. Famous births include the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henry IV, Sir Isaac Newton,
Margaret Thatcher, Geoff Capes and Matthew Flinders.
Whether you are organising a Lincolnshire ceremony in spring, summer, autumn or winter,
we hope you find a stunning choice of Licensed Venues to fulfil your dreams and have
an enjoyable experience travelling around this beautiful county visiting and exploring our
unique venues for that extra special backdrop for your ceremony.
We wish you a very enjoyable celebration, whatever you choose.

A marriage ceremony or civil partnership can take place in England and Wales 365 days
of the year. The ceremony must legally occur between the hours of 8.00am and 6.00pm.
The latest that we, in Lincolnshire, would advise a ceremony to start is 5.15pm as the
declaratory and contracting words must be spoken before 6.00pm.
in Lincolnshire
The Perfect Civil Ceremony
The first thing you need to do, is decide on the venue for your ceremony and make a
provisional booking in the venues diary. It does not matter if you do not live in the county
where you want your ceremony to be held.
You will then need to provisionally book the Registration Officer(s) to attend at your ceremony.
In Lincolnshire this may be done up to two years in advance.
Before you can marry or form a civil partnership there are certain formalities which are
required to be completed by law. The bride and groom or civil partners must attend at the
Registration Office in person, in the district in which they have lived for the last seven days
to inform the Registration Officer of their intention to marry or form a civil partnership. This is
called giving Notice. You may give Notice up to one year before the date of your ceremony.
Please read our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers on the following pages.
Civil partnership is a legally recognised relationship, which can be formed by two people
of the same sex. Couples who form a civil partnership will have the legal status of ‘civil
partner’. Couples can enjoy the same rights over pensions, wills and probate, death duties,
tax etc. as married couples.
With so much to think about, planning and making arrangements for your day is exciting
but can also be stressful. The Registration and Celebratory Services team are here to help
you with your plans. They can advise and make suggestions about your ceremony and
what to include, offering you a wealth of experience at all stages in the planning of your big
day.
If you find a venue where you would love to have your ceremony but find it does not hold
a licence for civil ceremonies, you can encourage the venue to contact us about obtaining
approval.

Giving Notice
If you have decided that you would like your civil ceremony to take place in a Lincolnshire
Registration Office or at a Lincolnshire Licensed Venue and have selected a date for your
ceremony, we suggest that you make a provisional booking with the venue and then contact
our Customer Service Centre as soon as possible on 01522 782244.
Our ceremony co-ordinator will be able to check to see if our Registration Officers are
available to attend your ceremony on the selected date and time and make a provisional
booking in our Registration Officer’s diary. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have
booked the venue and the Registration Officers to attend on your ceremony day.
You may give Notice up to one year before the date of your ceremony. An appointment
to give your Notice will need to be made by contacting our Customer Service Centre on
01522 782244.
If you live in Lincolnshire
As Lincolnshire is a one-district county you can give Notice at any one of our Registration
Offices. Giving Notice confirms your booking and if you do not do this, the wedding or civil
partnership ceremony cannot take place.
The Customer Service Centre will advise you of each Registration Office’s opening times and
the documents that you will be required to bring with you when you meet the Registration
Officer. You must bring original documents with you as photocopies will not be accepted. Our
Registration Offices are located at: Boston; Bourne; Gainsborough; Grantham; Horncastle;
Lincoln; Long Sutton; Louth; *Skegness; Sleaford; Spalding; Spilsby and Stamford.
*NB: Our Skegness Registration Office does not have a ceremony room.
If you do not live in Lincolnshire
You will have to give your Notice at the local Registration Office in the district where you do
live. You will need to contact them to make an appointment. It does not matter if you do
not live in the district where you want your ceremony to be held.
Your appointment with the Registration Officer
Your Notice will be valid for 12 months from the date it is given to the Registration Officer
and is only valid for your chosen venue. Giving Notice will take approximately 60 minutes
(30 minutes each). A minimum of 15 clear days is required by law before the ceremony can
take place, this does not include the day that Notice is given or the day of the ceremony.
If at a later date, after giving your Notice you decide to change the chosen venue, a new
Notice will have to be given.

How far in advance can I book?
Notice can be given up to 12 months in advance of the ceremony day. If you want your

What if I want to book more than a year in advance?
You may be able to make a PROVISIONAL BOOKING to secure a date and time more
than a year ahead. You need to firstly make enquiries about availability with your chosen
venue (if you are not using a Registration Office) and then telephone our Customer
Service Centre to arrange the provisional booking (your booking will be acknowledged
in writing). You should take this letter with you when you give your Notice. WARNING!!

Ceremony Plan
When you have given your Notices to the Registration Officer you will receive an A4
booklet which contains the choices for your ceremony wording and the ceremony plan.
The ceremony plan must be completed and returned to the Registration Office conducting
your ceremony six weeks before the ceremony is due to take place. If your ceremony is
taking place in a Licensed Venue, or an enhanced ceremony in a Registration Office, full
payment must also be returned at this time.
Authority for Marriage
After your Notices have been given to the Registration Officer, they will be displayed
publicly at Lincoln Register Office for a period of 15 clear days.
At the end of this 15 day waiting period the Authority of Marriage can be issued by
the Superintendent Registrar. This is the legal document giving permission for the said
marriage to take place. Without the Authority the marriage cannot go ahead.
• If you both live in Lincolnshire and the wedding is taking place in a Lincolnshire
Registration Office or a Lincolnshire Licensed Venue, the Superintendent Registrar will
organise the safe delivery of your two Authorities to the Registration Officer conducting
your marriage prior to your ceremony day. No further action is required by the bride
or groom.
• If the bride and groom both live in Lincolnshire but the wedding is taking place out of
the county, the Authorities will be posted by us to you. It will be your responsibility to
arrange the safe delivery of your two Authorities for Marriage to the person who will be
conducting your ceremony. If you are posting these documents we suggest that you
send them via recorded delivery.
• If you live outside Lincolnshire and your wedding ceremony is taking place in a
Lincolnshire Registration Office or a Lincolnshire Licensed Venue, it is your responsibility
to ensure safe delivery of the Authorities to the Registration Office conducting your
ceremony. If you are posting these documents we suggest that you send them via
recorded delivery.

Schedule for Civil Partnership
Celebrate

Officer, an extract from the Notices will be displayed publicly at Lincoln Register Office
for a period of 15 clear days.
At the end of this 15 day waiting period, the schedule (authority for the partnership
registration to take place) can be issued by the Civil Partnership Registrar. This is the
legal document giving permission for the said partnership to take place. Without the
schedule the partnership cannot go ahead.
The schedule is printed electronically, via computer by the Civil Partnership Registrar who
will be conducting the ceremony. No further action is required by the civil partners.
Witnesses
Two witnesses must be provided for the marriage ceremony or civil partnership
formation, who may be either relatives or friends. They should be over the age of 16,

twelve
Photographic Policy and Insurance
Lincolnshire County Council - Photographic Policy
The following bullet points should act as guidance for photography at ceremonies.
• Couples should be asked to identify (on the ceremony plan) the name of the official
(i.e. professional) photographer or to nominate by name a member of their party
who will be taking the ‘official’ photographs
• The official/nominated photographer should be introduced to the Superintendent
Registrar on duty, before the ceremony and a brief chat should take place to ensure
the photographer is aware of the policy
• When a bride/groom/partners enter the ceremony room at the start of proceedings,
all guests should be allowed to take flash photographs
• The Superintendent Registrar will advise guests not to use cameras during the
actual ceremony
• The nominated photographer will not use flash photography during the ceremony
• He/she will stand in a position agreed by the Superintendent Registrar prior to the
ceremony and will not move around the room
• The camera should be silent or reasonably quiet
• The ceremony will not be paused to allow for photographs to be taken
• Strictly no photography will be allowed by anyone during the signing of the register/
schedule. This is to ensure confidentiality
• Mock up signings will take place after the ceremony and signing, allowing official
photographers and guests to take photographs
• Consideration for the dignity and solemnity of the occasion will always be
paramount
• The duty staff will always make the final decision on what is permitted within these
policy guidelines.
Insurance
Amid the excitement of your plans, there is one consideration that may be forgotten insurance. After all, you may well be spending a lot of money on your special day and
you would surely not want to risk losing everything. Just think - your suppliers may go
out of business and your deposits could be lost…what if the transport doesn’t turn up
or the cake and flowers don’t appear…or the photographer may let you down through
illness or a simple mistake in booking…
There may be an accident on your big day - breakages, or even damage to your beautiful
dress. Insurance can even cover the cancellation of your ceremony. This may happen
through no fault of your own, such as illness or the death of someone close.
These are considerations which may be far from your mind in the flurry of plans but they
are well worth discussing with your family - put it on your list!

Passports
Celebrate
www.magicalmomentsphotography.co.uk
Formalities
If you are going to change your name after your ceremony, then one of the documents that
you can change in advance of the big day itself is your passport. This can be amended up
to three months in advance of your ceremony day. You will need to complete a form PD2
and you can get this:
• By downloading the form as a PDF file from www.direct.gov.uk/passports
• From Post Office branches that offer the Check and Send Passport Service
• From any Regional Passport Office
• By telephoning the IPS Passport Advice line 0300 222 0000 and the form will be
posted to you.
Part of the form should be completed by you and then the whole form sent to the Registration
Office that will be conducting your ceremony for confirmation that the ceremony is booked
to take place. The leaflet PD1 explains this in more detail.
What you must also remember is that any name used for travel booking or tickets etc. must
be the same as that shown in the passport you will be using to travel.
Surname
Following a marriage or civil partnership ceremony some people may wish to change their
surname to their partners or may wish to hyphenate their names. The passport agency,
DVLA or other government departments will accept a marriage or civil partnership certificate
as evidence for changing names.
Couples bound together through a civil partnership will not be referred to as husband or
wife, but as ‘civil partners’.
Additional Certificates
Should you require additional copies of your certificate, these can be paid for on the
ceremony day and they will be prepared and posted to you.
Extra copies of your certificate will be useful if you are going to change your name after the
ceremony and need to send a copy to the various organisations where you wish your new
name to be used. Purchasing additional copies could mean that you will not have to wait
for your original certificate to be returned to you before sending it out to inform someone
else about your new name!

Licensed Venues
ENHANCED CEREMONY
Your ceremony may be as simple or as elaborate as you wish. Licensed Venues can
provide the perfect setting for themed ceremonies with their different backgrounds in
history and architectural styles. Perhaps you see yourself dressed in the 18th century
style, or maybe you see your guests enjoying the traditional ceremony breakfast on
the terrace of a country house?
Many of the Licensed Venues are set amidst landscapes, lakes and beautiful gardens
or within close proximity to the Lincolnshire coastline and beaches providing an
exceptional backdrop for your photographs.
Many visitors to Lincolnshire also incorporate their wedding or civil partnership
celebrations into an annual holiday for themselves, their family and friends.
Some venues offer a range of accommodation for you and your guests to stay in
before, during and after the ceremony day. The events organiser in each of the venues
will be delighted to discuss the various arrangements that can be made to make your

Lincolnshire Registration & Celebratory Services
Celebratory
Services
Celebratory Services include Naming, Renewal of Vows, Memorials,
Funerals, Nationality Checking Service, Citizenship Ceremonies and
Certificate Services.
Civil Naming and Renewal of Vows ceremonies were introduced in 2001, giving families
and couples the options to celebrate the arrival of a new child or reaffirm their vows with a
non-religious ceremony.
Funeral and Memorial ceremonies were introduced in 2003, giving any bereaved family the
option to celebrate the life of the deceased in a civil ceremony.
A Celebratory ceremony has no legal status, so you can choose whether or not to organise
one. The celebration and any written record of the ceremony cannot be used as proof
of identification and neither is the ceremony legally binding on those who participate. A
celebratory ceremony is secular and will have no religious content.
thirty five
www.cristophotography.com
Lincolnshire County Council would like to stress that the above ceremonies are offered
as an alternative to a religious service and anyone considering, for example, a baptism, a
religious blessing, funeral or memorial ceremony, should be encouraged to do so.
Celebrate
Celebrate the birth of a new baby; welcome an adopted child or stepchildren into the family
to form part of the bonding within an extended family unit. Siblings may also be included in
a ceremony. The occasion gives parents, grandparents, supporting adults, family members
and friends the opportunity to welcome your child by getting involved and making promises
of support and commitment, or by reciting a reading or poem, in a family celebration.
It is very important for parents to receive help, advice and support while raising their child
into adulthood and supporting adults are nominated for this role. Ideally, supporting adults
should be people who the child will see regularly and have a good and positive influence
in their life.
If you are thinking about getting married or forming a civil partnership and you have children,
why not make your day a double celebration by including a naming ceremony for your
children on the same day?
RENEWAL OF VOWS CEREMONY
Any couple, of any age who have been through a legal marriage or civil partnership
ceremony can arrange to renew their vows. A ceremony can give that extra special edge
to an anniversary or birthday giving the opportunity of a double celebration.
It is sometimes particularly relevant for any couple who have been through a period which
put a strain on their relationship, but wish to celebrate their renewed commitment.
Any couple who have married or held their civil partnership abroad may wish to celebrate
with family and friends on their return by renewing their vows, or you may simply want to be
romantic and take the opportunity to say “I do” again. The ceremony will be unique to the
couple and as meaningful as their commitment to each other. Family members and friends
may also wish to get involved by reciting a reading or poem or you may wish to choose
them as your witnesses or ring bearer.
SUITABLE VENUES FOR NAMING or RENEWAL OF VOWS
in Lincolnshire
NAMING ceremony
A naming or renewal of vows ceremony can take place in a Registration Office, in a Licensed
Venue or a public building with a private function room, e.g. village hall, hotel, public house,
restaurant.
Please note that we cannot conduct a ceremony in a private home.
PLANNING A NAMING or RENEWAL OF VOWS CEREMONY
You will have the opportunity to work closely with our co-ordinator to create your ceremony.
Options include promises, readings, poems, personal vows and your own choice of music.
Each ceremony will be an event that you and all your guests will remember and treasure.
A souvenir record of each ceremony will be signed by the couple or child’s parents and the
witnesses or supporting adults and presented at the closing of the ceremony.
For further details or if you would like to book a naming or renewal of vows ceremony please
telephone the Customer Service Centre on 01522 782244.

MEMORIAL ceremony
A memorial ceremony may be appropriate in the following circumstances:
• The anniversary of a loved one’s death
• Following a small private funeral
• To acknowledge a still born child
•W
here family, friends and colleagues live abroad and it may not be possible for them to
make travel arrangements in time to attend the funeral
•W
hen a body is donated to medical research
•W
hen someone dies abroad and family and friends are unable to attend the funeral
• When a person has been lost/missing for some time and presumed to be deceased
• Annual group ceremonies for bereaved families.
A memorial ceremony doesn’t have to be a solemn occasion, it is a chance for all who
knew the deceased to gather, socialise and share their memories, anecdotes and thoughts.
The ceremony will show warmth, sincerity and will uniquely and affectionately celebrate the
life of the deceased. A detailed tribute is paid to them, to the life they lived, the connections
they made and have left behind.
A memorial ceremony can take place in a Registration Office, and each ceremony room
is unique and can seat between 20–50 guests. Details about each Registration Office are
available in this brochure.
Alternatively, for the larger celebration a ceremony can be held in a Licensed Venue or a public
building with a private function room, e.g. village hall, hotel, public house, restaurant.
Please note that we cannot conduct a ceremony in a private home.

Celebrate
A civil funeral ceremony reflects the beliefs and values of the deceased, the life they lived,
the connections they made and left behind. Your choice could be influenced by religious
and cultural traditions, cost or personal preferences or by the expressed wishes of the
deceased.
in Lincolnshire
CIVIL FUNERAL ceremony, WOODLAND BURIAL or iNTERMENT
A civil funeral can be held almost anywhere, except in churches or religious buildings, and
is appropriate for a cremation or burial at any non-religious burial ground.
The ceremony is both a dignified tribute and highly personal memoir created by a celebrant
in consultation with the family or executor for this final act of love and respect. It is created
using a comprehensive framework that allows you the freedom to make a range of choices
regarding the content and style for the ceremony. Family members and friends may wish to
recite a reading or add their own words of tribute. A hymn, prayer and a moments reflective
silence can also be included if you wish.
A woodland or ‘green’ burial offers a ‘return to nature’ for those who wish to be buried
among trees, birds and wild flowers. It is a way of introducing a greater choice for the
bereaved. Green burials are where non-embalmed bodies in a simple woollen or cotton
shroud are buried in a coffin made from non-rainforest wood. Biodegradable materials
such as wicker, bamboo and cardboard are used. Graves can be marked by planting a
small tree, wild flowers or a bird box can be hung. The ceremony is created by our celebrant
in consultation with the family.
An Interment ceremony is a short formal occasion, usually following a cremation. In many
cases ashes are interred in a place that holds special significance or happy memories for
the deceased and their family. The ceremony is created by our celebrant in consultation
with the family.

Nationality Checking Service
What is the Nationality Checking Service?
The service is a partnership between the Home Office UK Border Agency and Local
Authorities in England and Wales.
Lincolnshire County Council is offering this optional service for anyone applying for
British nationality. Completed British nationality applications will be checked for accuracy
and all necessary documents will be photocopied, certified and sent in support of the
application.
This means that those using the service can keep their original valuable documents such
as passports and marriage certificates rather than sending them to the Home Office.
Benefits and Advantages of the Service
The Home Office will receive correctly completed applications and documentation,
avoiding unneccesary delays.
Original documents can be retained, rather than sending them to the Home Office.
The service ensures peace of mind for clients, that their application is complete, checked
for accuracy and sent by secure post direct to the Home Office.
How do I use the service, costs and further information?
For further details call our Customer Service Centre on 01522 782244 or visit our website:
www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/registration
An appointment is essential; you cannot be seen without one.

How can I apply for British Citizenship?
Celebrate
Under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, all applicants aged 18 years
or over, who are accepted for naturalisation or registration by the Home Office as a
British Citizen, must take part in a Citizenship Ceremony. The heart of the Citizenship
Ceremony will involve making an oath/affirmation to Her Majesty the Queen and
a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom. These ceremonies will take place at
designated venues within Lincolnshire.
Applications to become a British citizen need to be arranged via the Home Office. Their
email address is ukbanationalityenquiries@ukba.gsi.gov.uk or telephone 0845 010
5200. As your application process nears completion, you will be sent a letter inviting you
to attend a citizenship ceremony along with: guidance notes explaining what to do next;
the wording of the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance and Citizenship Pledge; your personal
details to check; the telephone number and address of your Local Authority.
How do I arrange to attend a Citizenship Ceremony?
Once you have received your ceremony invitation letter, you are required to contact the
Customer Service Centre on 01522 782244 to arrange a date for your ceremony. You have
11 weeks in which to attend a ceremony. If you cannot attend within this time, we may
have to withdraw your invitation and you will be required to apply and pay the fee again.
Group ceremonies are held at our Lincoln, Grantham and Boston Registration Offices.
What will happen at the Ceremony?
in Lincolnshire
Citizenship Ceremonies
Ceremonies begin with a speech of welcome by a Registration Officer. The ceremony
also includes speeches by local dignitaries explaining what it means, legally, to become
a British citizen. The taking of a new citizenship oath or pledge is a legal requirement
and the key moment at which citizenship is confirmed. New citizens are then called up
one at a time to receive their certificate, information pack and commemorative gifts. The
nationality certificate is presented by a local dignitary on behalf of the Home Secretary and
can subsequently be used to support passport applications and to prove the individual
is a British citizen. The ceremony will end with a closing speech and the playing and
singing of the national anthem. Afterwards, there may be an informal celebration with light
refreshments and citizens have the opportunity to take photographs with their guests and/
or the dignitaries in attendance.
Are family applications accepted?
Where possible, the Home Office considers applications from members of the same family
at the same time so they can attend a ceremony together.
Can we invite our family and friends?
Whilst you are welcome to bring guests, family and friends to your ceremony,
accommodation is unfortunately restricted and therefore it is necessary to place a limit of
two guests per application. Access to the ceremony will be by invitation only and applicants
will be issued with the appropriate number of invites.
Do we have to attend a public ceremony?
Citizenship Ceremonies will normally be conducted in groups to reinforce the community
nature of citizenship. You may however wish to celebrate with a personal ceremony, by
holding a party for family and friends within the County. Citizenship Ceremonies cannot be
held at private homes.

COMMEMORATIVE CERTIFICATES

Picture Perfect
So what and who should you be looking for whilst choosing your photographer? Firstly
make sure you both feel relaxed and comfortable with your photographer. Choosing a
friend or relative to photograph your wedding may save you money, but unless the person
being asked is a professional portrait or wedding photographer, they are unlikely to have the
skills to get a good coverage of your day. Bear in mind they will not be able to enjoy your
day to the full and they’ll have to stay clear of the Champagne!
Photographers who offer a higher and more personal level of service will only cover one
wedding per day and would not call in sub-contracted photographers to help cover busy
dates. Ask about their availability.
Work out how long you require your photographer and what pictures you want to be taken.
Would you want the morning preparations photographed? This can be a great start to an
album, curlers and all! Right through to the evening, including, your first dance - a lovely
way to end your album.
The style of photographs taken is very important. When viewing a photographer’s work,
make sure their sample albums are of single weddings rather than a pick of the best from
several weddings, placed into one album. This will allow you to see their work flow through
a whole day. Ideally ask to see about three or four recent weddings, judge their ability on
what you see. Great photographs are crafted. Look at the facial expressions in groups.
These expressions are a direct indication of the ambience created by the photographer.
Once you have viewed their albums, did you feel that you were there? Did the pictures
emotionally move you? Was the presentation and print quality to the standard that you are
happy with?
There is so much to choose from, like traditional albums with one photograph per page,
or ‘coffee table’ albums or even digital book sometimes known as “magazine style” there
really is something for everyone. Nowadays, most photographers don’t limit how many
photographs they take. Remember, it’s quality, not quantity, that counts.
What should you pay? An experienced, creative photographer, who offers a pre wedding
shoot, a full coverage of your day and evening will charge more. Spend as much as you
can afford and go for the photographer that you are confident with. Your wedding album
will capture your memories and become a treasured family heirloom.
Check for, availability, a style you like, presentation, personality, a level of service fitting
your wedding, check your photographer has suitable insurance, is a member of either
The British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) or The Master Photographers
Association (MPA) and choose a photographer you can have fun with!
