The Good News
ARE YOU STILL PLAYING T-BALL?
T-ball games are very interesting!! The outfielder is watching
the batter, yelling at the other outfielder, looking at the
ground or swinging his arms. Also, there may be a coach,
parent or another player yelling advice.
As the player advances in age and experience he develops
skills and focus. He realizes that the coach wants the
player’s skills to be the best! Hence, he is more likely to heed
the coach’s advice. The runner won’t steal second base
unless he gets the signal from the coach.
Christians face times in our journey where we will be distracted like the young
T-ball player. We may seek advice from multiple sources. We need to regain our
focus and realize that Jesus demonstrated the “skills” of the Christian life and the
Holy Spirit is our “coach”.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will
direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)
In His Service,

Children’s News
Welcome to summer time! Thanks to everyone who joined us at Sweet
Frog last month for a time of fun and fellowship. Remember the Family
Fun Day on Saturday June 21st at Augusta Expoland from 11:00 am to
5:00 pm. There will be live music, cornhole, and free food! Try to make plans
to attend, this should be a great family event! We are still looking for
volunteers to help purchase light snacks for Children’s Church on Sundays. If you
are interested in helping provide snacks let me know!
In His name, Shawn McLain.
Youth News
Hello all, the youth are working on a discipleship study, and are
preparing for their local mission and camp event. This year we will be
staying at Walnut Hills Campground the same week as VBS. The Youth will
be involved in local missions during the day, and will participate in the Youth VBS during
the evening. We do not have much planned in June, however, we are hoping on going
hiking, swimming, and just having some summer fun together. God bless! Tony Shifflett
Greetings from The Neighborhood Church in Syracuse!
WHAT MAKES GOD HAPPY?
If I were to ask you “WHY did God allow Israel to be taken into
captivity?” The first response would probably be “Idolatry”. No
doubt this was a problem, but in Isaiah 58, God gives a broader
picture of what HE hated about what they were doing:
(continued on next page)
Page 4
The Good News
It seems they were doing all the right things:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
They
They
They
They
They
They
were praying and fasting.
were seeking after God.
wanted to know His ways.
were trying their best to be righteous.
asked God to judge them righteously.
wanted to be as close to God as they could.
In our modern day church, we would could say that we never miss church. We listen and
apply our Pastor’s messages. We pray, fast, worship and try to draw near to God, yet, for some
reason God is not pleased. Why?
Verse 5-10 tells us what He expected of them AND us:
“5 Is this the kind of fast I choose, a day of self-affliction, of bending one’s head like a reed and
of lying down in mourning clothing and ashes? Is this what you call a fast, a day acceptable to
the Lord?
6 Isn’t this the fast I choose: releasing wicked restraints, untying the ropes of a yoke, setting
free the mistreated, and breaking every yoke?
7 Isn’t it sharing your bread with the hungry and bringing the homeless poor into your house,
covering the naked when you see them, and not hiding from your own family?
WOW! The outward showing of their heart for God was fine, He expected their love, worship
and devotion, but that love, worship and devotion for God should have led them to:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Releasing wicked restraints, untying the ropes of a yoke,
setting free the mistreated, and breaking every yoke?
Sharing their bread with the hungry.
Bringing the homeless poor into your house.
Covering the naked when they saw them.
Taking care of their own.
It was when they did those things that He would truly bless them. Notice what He says would
happen if they stopped “Playing Church” and started “Being the Church.”
“8 Then your light will break out like the dawn, and you will be healed quickly.
Your own righteousness will walk before you, and the Lord’s glory will be your rear guard.
9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and God will say, “I’m
here.” If you remove the yoke from among you, the finger-pointing, the wicked speech;
10
if you open your heart to the hungry, and provide abundantly for those who are afflicted,
your light will shine in the darkness, and your gloom will be like the noon.”
I have to ask myself, “If I am not receiving these promises is it because I am not letting my
love, worship and devotion of God spill out onto those that are hurting, lost, struggling and
abandoned?” I wonder if I am spending more time wallowing in my pity complaining about
how “unblessed” I am, instead of trying to be a blessing to others?

Music News & Events
By H. Keith Harris, Minister of Music
After a long winter, spring is finally here. But as I write this it actually
feels more like summer. This Spring at FBC, we can thank the Lord for
another successful Easter Sunrise Service and breakfast! We have had
several special services: Mothers’ Day, Graduation Sunday and Senior
Adult Sunday on Memorial Day Sunday to name a few. Our Sanctuary
Choir did the special on Mother’s Day and the Carters, Shawn McLain
and Mark Hackley blessed the Lord other weeks. Our Y.E.S. Choir went to sing and
visit the residents of Royal Care, Legacy and the Waynesboro Senior Center. The
Y.E.S. Choir also sang at the Community Lenten service. This month, the Y.E.S.
Choir will minister at the Seniors’ Meeting at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church
on Tuesday, June 10th. Many of us united for a very special time at Chris and
Elisha Shy’s wedding. Laura Hull graced the service with special music and
Brandon Fern was the photographer. Our congratulations to the Shy family.
We always thank the Lord for Margie on the piano and Kay on the organ. And
remember . . . Father’s Day is right around the corner on June 15th.
A Prayer...
Dear Lord we know You are with us during every season of the soul. We thank You
for these special services and special speakers and we ask for Your continued love
and divine protection in these last days. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress
replaced the British symbols of the Grand
Union flag with a new design featuring 13
white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13
red and white stripes – one for each state.
Although it is not certain, this flag may have
been made by the Philadelphia seamstress
Betsy Ross, who was an official flag maker for
the Pennsylvania Navy. The number of stars
increased as the new states entered the Union,
but the number of stripes stopped at 15 and
was later returned to 13.
In June 1886 Bernard Cigrand made his first public proposal for the annual observance of
the birth of the flag when he wrote an article titled “The Fourteenth of June” in the old
Chicago Argus newspaper. Cigrand’s effort to ensure national observance of Flag Day finally
came when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide
observance of the event on June 14, 1916. However, Flag Day did not become official until
August 1949, when President Harry Truman signed the legislation and proclaimed June 14 th
as Flag Day. In 1966, Congress also requested that the President issue annually a
proclamation designating the week in which June 14th occurs as National Flag Week.
The President is requested to issue each year a proclamation to: call on government officials
in the USA to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Flag Day;
and to urge US residents to observe Flag Day as the anniversary of the adoption on June 14,
1777, by the Continental Congress of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United
States. Copied from: http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/flag-day

The Neighborhood Church Updates
House Update: We received word that the owner of the house that we are
living in, who happens to live in California, is selling the house. He sent a
couple of Real Estate agents over to “shop” it out. The guy that manages the
property told us that the owner is selling the house for $55,000. This is
probably not a bad offer but honestly, for the first time in many years we are
completely debt free. The thought of that changing just sends chills up my
spine. So, we are prayerfully considering the offer, but just not sure if we want
to buy right now. We will look around at other properties to see if there is
another option.
Building Update: We are continuing to look for a building to move TNC into
one day. There are quite a few vacated buildings in the neighborhood that we
are checking into. This week, we may take some pictures of “options” and
send them to you so you can pray with us about this important move. God’s
timing is perfect so we are in no rush, just waiting for him to open the proper
door.
Monthly Unified Community Service: We are very excited about joining with
the Nepali Church of Syracuse and the Myanmar (Burmese) Baptist Church
on the last Saturday of every month for a Community Service, starting this
week . We are praying that this will be a great benefit to all three of our
congregations. The service will be in English which will benefit both the Nepali
and Burmese as many of their younger adults and youth are learning English.
Also, pray that it will be a time of tearing down some walls of tension between
Syracuse locals and the Refugee community.
Children Evangelism Fellowship: Throughout the months of July and
August, every Monday afternoon we are partnering with Children Evangelism
Fellowship to do a children’s outreach at Schiller Park. This is a great
opportunity to share Christ with the kids of our neighborhood. Pray that God
will use this time for His Glory.
Mission Groups: During July and August we are having two mission teams
coming up from down south to be a wonderful blessing to our family and our
neighborhood. In July, friends from Corinth Baptist, Elizabeth City, NC will be
spending a week with us and in August, friends from Southside Baptist,
Suffolk, VA will join us. We are so excited about these opportunities. Pray that
God shines brightly as we join together to bless our neighborhood by
SHOWING Jesus and SHARING Jesus!
