Three Reasons Why Your Bagging Scale Matters
Spring 2013 Providing Superior Packaging Equipment and Customer Ser vice Since 1927 Three Reasons Why Your Bagging Scale Matters Your scale is your profit center It’s amazing how many companies lose site of the importance of bag fill accuracy to bagging operation profitability. Many companies continue to trust this important component of their business to bagging scale manufacturers using outdated designs based on 1970’s or 1980’s weighing technology. These old designs simply don’t measure up to the next generation technology that is available from Hamer. Most of these old design scales have repeatability variances, bag to bag of ¾ lb to 1 lb or more. To compensate, producers end up overfilling each bag by at least 1 lb, if not 2 lbs, to make sure they meet Weights and Measures requirements. 600NW and 600NW SS Duplex Net Weigh Bagging Scales What is the amount of product give away in your bag? Years ago, shipping an extra 1 lb or more of product with each bag may not have been a problem. But with the increase in raw material costs in Fertilizer, Seed and Feed industries this extra product equates to a lot of lost profit. In 2007, Hamer launched an all new design Net Weigh Bagging Scale utilizing the newest industrial weighing technology available. The result is our Model 600NW Net Weigh Bagging Scale. The 600NW reduces per bag overfill by 40% or better on every bag. Customers using the 600NW in their bagging operation see immediate and significant improvements in their bag fill accuracy, increasing their bagging line profitability. It paces your production By having a scale that will run consistently and accurately at 15, 18, 25 or more Bags Per Minute (BPM) you can use the scale to pace your bagging rate and production throughput. If you are still using older simplex (single) scale designs they typically cannot run faster than 10-12 BPM. This now becomes your maximum production rate. You can’t bag faster than your scale can run. Hamer’s new technology Model 600NW will run simplex (single) scale rates of 18-22 BPM on a gravity feed system, accurately and consistently. The scale is 600NW Belt Feed no longer your production bottleneck. We’ve installed dozens and dozens of these high speed simplex scales with outstanding customer results. Your raw material costs keep going up Whether you are bagging Fertilizer, Feed, or Seeds, your cost of raw materials has continued to climb. Your 1 lb+ excess product per bag has never cost you more. It’s not uncommon for high volume lines to lose $30,000 to $40,000 annually on a single bagging line. Do you know what your product give-away cost you last year? A better way Hamer next generation bagging scales offer better accuracy, faster speeds and less down time than any other design. Call us and we’ll help you begin improving your bagging line profitability, at a cost that gives you an outstanding Return On Investment. Square Meal Feeds Products Innovates Horse Feed Packaging with HFFS technology Harlan Anderson, DVM and Farmer was looking for a better feed product for horses. Horses have always been grained, but Dr. Anderson knew there had to be a better way to improve horse nutrition and thereby horse health. He developed a horse feed that follows the success of pet food nutrition improvements seen in the past several decades. The result, Square Meal Feeds™, a complete diet that is a Total Mixed Ration or TMR. It promotes longevity, better health and a higher quality of life. An alfalfa based biscuit, it includes essential nutrients and is the first 24/7 feed that eliminates the need for additional grains. To support this new feed product, Dr. Anderson sought an improved feed package as well. He contacted Hamer for assistance in developing an automated bagging system using a polyethylene bag. “A lot of feed products are sold in paper and poly woven bags. Paper Square Meal Feeds poly bag filled using Hamer’s bags fail easily and poly woven bags are not sustainable environmentally, automated Form, Fill and Seal machine with they’ll be sitting in a land fill for a millennium. Poly bags offer a recyclable, Volumetric Feeder environmentally sustainable solution that our customers prefer over Poly Woven bags” said Dr. Anderson. He went on to say “Customer education and use information is much easier to read on poly, and with the improved color and clarity of poly bags, customers can really understand what the value of the product is. Bag opening is also much easier. No more struggling with knives or scissors to hack your way through a woven bag.” The product has been tested throughout the country and in the deep south where humidity can be problematic. With proper feed ingredients, Square Meal Feeds Biscuits™ are a perfect match to poly bags. Square Meal Feeds uses Hamer automated Form, Fill and Seal bagging with a Hamer Volumetric Feeder dosing feed into the bags. Introducing New Model 1200BH Bag Hanger Now bag placing reliability and efficiency can be attained with one cost effective machine, the Model 1200BH Bag Hanger. Supporting open mouth paper, polyurethane, polyethylene, poly laminates and poly woven bags, virtually any Feed, Seed, Pet Food, Fertilizer or other applications are perfect for the Model 1200BH. Empty bags are placed in stacks on the bag magazine and then each bag is individually picked and indexed to the opening and filling stations. By first indexing an individual bag, the Model 1200BH eliminates messy bag handling caused by trying to pick a bag up right off the bag stack. This improves efficiency ratings and positive bag positioning for much improved production consistency. Designed from the ground up to be able to support all of today’s open mouth bags, change over from one bag style to another takes minutes to keep production up time to a maximum. Modular in construction, the Model 1200BH can be configured with a variety of bag magazine sizes, right hand or left hand bag feeding and bag closing. Its small footprint allows for placement in virtually any plant. Paper, Poly Woven, Poly bag magazine When combined with Hamer Model 600NW Net Weigh Scales, Bag Handing Conveyors and Hamer Robotic Palletizers the Model 1200BH becomes an integral part of a highly efficient Open Mouth bagging system. PAGE 2 Meet Dave Coon New products Union Special US400 Plain Sew System Union Special, the leader in sew closure systems since 1881 offers their US400 sew system in Plain/Sew or Tape/Sew systems. Only Union Special offers not only the fastest, 75 ft/min, sew head, but the only fully enclosed industrial sew head, their model BC211P15-1. Using high quality industrial components, all steel support frames for vibration reduction, LCD controls and UL approved control panels, the US400 is the most durable system offered today. The extra-long bag in-feed goes completely under the sew head for positive bag feeding and prevents dropped bags when inserting tags onto the bag. A wide range of options including fold over are available. Proudly made in the USA. Center Grip 100GW The Model 100GW Centergrip expands use of the popular 100GW into even more applications. The Centergrip design allows for feeding of larger particle sizes and a greater range of bag sizes. It supports bags from 8” to 25” in width, and larger sized free flowing materials. Products like Nuts, Crushed Rock, Pea gravel and others can be run on the Model 100GW. Model 600NW Refuge-In-Bag Scale Dave joined Hamer six years ago as a Lead Scale technician helping support our then, new Model 600NW Net Weigh scale product line. He brought with him over 30 years of technical experience with a wide variety of scale products. From Truck Scales to Laboratory balances Dave’s training and experience truly qualify him as an expert. He’s been instrumental in developing improvement and design enhancements to all of our bagging scales. In addition, he’s spent many years developing and supporting sophisticated scale and packaging systems, such as; Automatic Drum Fillers, Batch Control Systems and High Speed Automated Packaging Systems. When not developing technical products, Dave enjoys time with his two boys, one a Senior in college, the other active duty Army, stationed at Fort Hood Texas. Summer sees Dave enjoying watersports with his friends and family. Hamer’s Model 600NW RIB Gravity Feed secondary vibratory feed, meets EPA insect resistance management (IRM) program requirements for bagged/boxed packaged seed. Available in both simplex or duplex versions, the 600NW RIB is the most accurate and cost effective system available. Weighment data is transmitted and collected to meet EPA and trace provider compliance.
