Cost Efiective Pre-Made Bagging Automation
Spring 2015 Providing Superior Packaging Equipment and Customer Service Since 1927 Cost Effective Pre-Made Bagging Automation W ith the introduction of our Model 1200BH bag hanging machine, Hamer offers the most comprehensive line of equipment for your bagging operation. Whether you utilize kraft paper, poly, poly-lined paper, poly woven or poly woven laminate bags, Hamer equipment will dose, fill, handle and palletize virtually any pre-made bag. Keeping it simple Like all Hamer machines, the Model 1200BH features robust design and construction for long life in any industrial bagging operation. Switching from paper to poly woven or poly bags is done with a few simple adjustments, keeping change over time to under 5 minutes. Designed from the ground up to handle all popular bag styles, it works effortlessly no matter what bag type is being presented. Mechanical bag size adjustments and simplified software means anyone with limited training can run it. Pacing your production line Production managers appreciate the ability of this Bag Hanger to pace their production line. Production requirements are set on the machine by plant supervisors. Need 1,000 bags an hour, set the 1200BH to produce 16 BPM to meet that rate. If demand requires 1200 bags an hour, set for 20 BPM and demand is met. Variability in manual bagging production numbers from operator to operator is eliminated. Unlike many complex bag hanging and sealing machines, the Model 1200BH Model 1200BH uses the same operator to fill the bag magazine and to assist in bag top sealing. The simplicity Paper, poly or of its design reduces poly woven bags capital investment to less than 30% of complex automated machines. This means your production facility can afford to update bagging scales for improved accuracy and add a Robotic Bag Placer at about the same cost as one fully-automated machine. Keeping the Model 1200BH running year after year won’t break the bank. Simple design means fewer wear parts, reduced parts costs and most importantly less downtime. As a producer of 50 KG/100 lb. bags of reclaimed sulfur from the Tengiz Oilfields in Kazakhstan, Caspian Sulphur Company, LLP was looking for a bagging scale that would last in their demanding environment. Their original scales were not up to the challenge, exhibiting high failure rates and poor accuracy. The Caspian Sulphur Challenge: Bagging in Tengiz, Kazakhstan is challenging as it has some of the most extreme conditions on earth. Temperatures are 120º F in the summer and winter temperatures plummet to -20º F. Their processed flake sulfur is highly corrosive, which impacts all aspects of equipment design and maintenance. The plant is very, very remote even for Kazakhstan. Parts are not readily available, if at all. The production plant runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Their labor force works on 2-week rotations and lives in a dormitory in the vicinity of the plant, as it is too far from any population centers. Thus, only a limited workforce is available. Their mission – find a bagging scale that can meet the demands of production AND do so repeatedly, with a high degree of accuracy for their demanding end customer. Finding the Right Machine – Searching the world Model 600NW SS Weigh Scale Caspian Sulphur management issued a detailed product specification and began their search for the right bagging machine for their plant. Their product specification went to dozens of bagging scale manufacturers in the U.S. and Europe. Model Elias Haska, Managing Director at Caspian Sulphur, explains, “we 600NW SS Weigh Bucket had a weighted 30 item requirement list which graded accuracy, reliability, resistance to environmental influences and surrounding chemicals, maintenance and bilingual user interface. Hamer scales exceeded competitor scales due to their innovative, revolutionary design of securing load cells to weigh buckets, giving them added robustness.” Caspian Sulphur management placed an order for two systems which were installed in June of 2011. The machines were duplex stainless steel Model 600NW bagging scales with Servo controlled gravity feeders. Both scales needed to meet +/- 100 grams, 3.5 oz. on 50kg/110 lb. bags. Four years, millions of bags, millions of metric tons of sulfur later After four years of continuous running, and processing 30 million bags since the new scales were commissioned, Caspian Sulphur remains thrilled with the performance of the two Model 600NW bagging scales. “Operators and mechanics are very happy with the scales. The user interface in Russian language allows them to operate the scales with ease. The scale controllers, together with the integrated data acquisition systems, record the weight of every bag loaded into rail cars. Reliability and accuracy of the scales is exceeding our expectation,” said Haska. “Hamer supports their product worldwide. Our operation is at the other end of the world, yet we keep an excellent working relationship with technical and support personnel, resulting in scheduled visits for scale calibration, technical training and uninterrupted spare parts service.” — Elias Haska, Managing Director, Caspian Sulphur PAGE 2 Meet Dian Mullis Film Innovation Offers New Opportunity for Your Business At Hamer, we work with a network of preferred bag/film manufacturers that are lead suppliers of open mouth bags and roll stock for form, fill & seal machines. A notable innovation in this industry is a unique, 7-layer blend of polyethylene film with a nylon barrier that provides great durability. The bags constructed of this film have the functionality and durability of woven laminate, but at a lower cost and with form, fill & seal automation benefits. 7-layer PE, barrier film eases conversion from valve bags to Form, Fill & Seal Our customers have converted from labor-intensive valve bagging systems to FFS, utilizing a multi-layer barrier poly bag. This change-over reaches deep into our customers’ production and sales/distribution process, increasing their overall production efficiency and profitability. Consult with your Hamer representative to learn about the latest in poly blend materials for your product and how they will run on your machines. Introducing Hamer’s Model 5200 Bag Kicking Conveyor. Ideal for small footprint packaging systems, a bag kicking conveyor transfers bags at a 90 degree angle quickly and efficiently. The Model 5200 supports a wide range of paper, poly and poly woven bags with any type of top seal. All motor-driven with 10 gauge steel construction, the 5200 uses no air cylinders or compressed air. Pneumatic Roll Lift on the Horizontal Roll Stand A convenient upgrade on the Hamer Horizontal Roll Stand is a newly developed pneumatic film roll lift. This roll lift automatically picks up full rolls from the ground position, eliminating the need for fork truck or hoist loading of full rolls. The Horizontal Roll Stand can be used with either the Hamer Model 3100 or 2090 Form, Fill and Seal. Roll changes are fast – simply insert the core holder in the roll and roll into place. Then with the push of a button, the full roll is lifted into place, ready for threading into the Form, Fill and Seal. Less changeover time means higher production rates and pallets per hour. A Minnesota native and Hamer Engineering Manager, Dian is a graduate of General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Michigan with a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. She has had two previous design engineering and engineering management roles prior to joining Hamer in February of 2013. At Hamer, she has increased both Mechanical and Electronic Engineering staff, re-tooling both the staffing and physical engineering department. Recently she and her team have launched several new products, including a new Bag Kicking Conveyor and both Pallet and Slip Sheet Dispensers for our palletizer line. “I enjoy the fast-pace at Hamer, supporting our ever growing product lines and working with customers,” says Dian. “My vision for the company is to be THE leader for innovation in packaging equipment, building on our historic high quality designs and customer service.” Outside of work, Dian enjoys running marathons, riding her motorcycle, carpentry and spending time with family. She recently completed her new home, acting as general contractor and doing much of the build on her own. Contact Hamer Sales at 800-927-4674 for more information.
