A leading bankinsurer in France, the Crédit Mutuel group
is made up of the Crédit Mutuel network and all of its
subsidiaries. Backed by a staff of more than 100,000,
comprising 79,000 employees and 24,000 directors, it offers
a comprehensive range of financial expertise to more than
30 million customers, including 28 million retail customers.

WITH A LOCAL FOCUS
The group’s overriding priority, and the key to its development,
is the quality of both its customer and member relationships
and the services it provides. Its strategy is one of controlled
growth based on local retail banking, bankinsurance and
technological excellence.
It has a 15% share of the French deposit market
and 17.1% of the bank-distributed loan market.
The group focuses on closeness to the customer, combining
the strengths of Crédit Mutuel - a cooperative, mutual bank
with extensive regional and local ties - with those of CIC, a

Crédit Mutuel is composed of local mutual banks organised
into 18 regional federations, which in turn form the
Conféderation Nationale du Crédit Mutuel, the central

CIC operates a branch network in the Paris region and is

LEADING THE WAY IN BANKING
TECHNOLOGY
A SOLID, INVESTMENT GRADE BANK
In 2012, the group continued to boost its financial
solidity, with Core Tier 1 Equity reaching €28 billion.
Customers of the branch network benefit from a
comprehensive multi-channel banking offer based
on cutting edge technology.
Core Tier 1 Solvency ended the year at 14.5%
(CRD3/Basel 2.5 standards), making the group the
leading French bank in this area and among the
best in Europe.
In 2012, the remote banking service clocked up
more than a billion contacts, nearly half of them
online.
All of this allows Crédit Mutuel to await future
European regulations serenely, without envisaging
any business disposals.
Crédit Mutuel’s mobile telephony activity, marketed
under the NRJ Mobile, Crédit Mutuel Mobile and
CIC Mobile brands, provides a new channel for
bankinsurance and services and constitutes a new
approach to payment instruments that has
attracted more than a million customers.
In a context of all-round ratings downgrades for
banks in Europe, those of Crédit Mutuel were
among the best in France.
The negative outlooks assigned by Standard & Poor’s
and Moody’s are a reflection of the economic
climate in France and the downgrade to the
country’s credit rating.
The bank maintained its number two position in
France in electronic payments, with a nearly
19.8% share of the overall market, and its number
one position for transactions in France with affiliated
retailers, with market share of more than 25%.

stock exchange. It belongs to its 7.4 million shareholder members,
who vote on a "one person, one vote" basis and are responsible
for electing the 24,000 directors of the local mutual banks.

While 98% of French people now have access to basic
banking services, Crédit Mutuel remains committed to
combating financial marginalisation and integrating

Working outward from the heart the group and at
the initiative of many directors representing members,
Crédit Mutuel is examining its responsibility to society
and sustainable development policy. Its approach,
formalised within Crédit Mutuel for many years, has
been extended to the entire group, thanks to which
reporting on the various commitments and actions
undertaken by group companies has gradually been
organised and enhanced.
Efforts in this area have thus been stepped up and
the bank’s collective expertise broadened.

Crédit Mutuel’s elected representatives and employees
steer the bodies that organise internal solidarity
within the group. Particular attention is paid to
personal or professional situations adversely affected
by abrupt or unexpected changes, such as illness or
injury, redundancy or personal loss.

Supporting the real economy is about creating and
protecting local jobs, helping key players in local
economies, developing social housing and lower
income home ownership schemes, and giving local
populations in France and emerging countries alike
the means to control their economic and social
development. This is the role that the Crédit Mutuel
group, a committed bank and major economic player
in France serving the general interest, has chosen to
adopt.
SOCIAL POLICY DICTATED
BY MUTUALIST VALUES
The group’s staff of 79,060 benefits from favourable
lab our agreements in terms of so cial p olicy,
particularly with regard to employee benefits
and training.
Career advancement is emphasised heavily at the
different levels within companies. It is promoted
through steady and significant investments in
training (65% of employees received training in 2012).
Autonomy is encouraged, but collective recognition
is also stressed. This policy helps to make employees
more mobile, notably allowing them to move from
support functions to sales or management positions
on the commercial side of the business.
The bank’s main goals are to support jobs, recognise
employees and build loyalty (95% of employees have
permanent contracts), diversify recruitment profiles
and promote equal opportunity.
SHAPING THE SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT POLICY
Operating in the service sector, the Crédit Mutuel
group’s environmental impact is limited. It has
nonetheless identified areas where improvements
can be made and set objective targets, taking into
account the nature of its business (reduction in use
of paper, better control of travel impact and energy
usage for lighting and heating, leaving computers in
sleep mode, etc.).

Responsibility (CSR) plan, the group has been
publishing CSR reports since 2006. More recently, it
began a review of shared greenhouse gas reduction
targets and the tools to be implemented.
This group-wide policy is a way for all parts of
Crédit Mutuel to work together on methods and

The Confédération Nationale, or national confederation,
is the central body governing the network. It represents

REGIONAL groups (second level of organisation)
Federation: Responsible for strategy and supervision, it represents
Crédit Mutuel in its region.
LOCAL mutual banks. They constitute the first level of
organisation. The local mutual banks, or caisses locales, have
the legal status of cooperative companies with variable capital
(sociétés coopératives à capital variable) and their capital
is owned by members, who are shareholders and customers.
At 31 December 2012, there were 2,116 local mutual banks covering
all of the French regions, grouped into 18 regional groups (federations
and federal banks).
Director: A member with a seat on the board of directors of
his or her local mutual bank.
Member: Client who are associates of Crédit Mutuel. Members
own a share and are thus part owners of their local mutual
bank. At the group level, 7.4 million members exercise control
over the management of their bank and appoint directors during
annual general meetings.

Federal (or interfederal) bank: Regional financial institution.
These entities have merged in recent years to combine their
forces. As of 1 January 2013, there were two inter-regional
banks covering their regions: Arkéa interfederal bank (Bretagne,
Massif Central and Sud-Ouest regions), and Caisse Fédérale
de Crédit Mutuel, also called CM11. CM11 is now the largest
inter-regional bank within the Crédit Mutuel group, since
it represents the combined strengths of 11 regional groups
(see map opposite).
NATIONAL bodies (third level of organisation)
Confédération Nationale du Crédit Mutuel (CNCM) is a
non-profit association under the Law of 1901 to which all of
the Crédit Mutuel regional federations belong. It provides
non-banking services to its members, defends their interests
and represents them vis-à-vis authorities.
