Attractive

Dear Reader,
Excitement or tension is a key essence of spirited vitality.
While modern science can reveal little to us about the secret of life, one phenomenon which could be of central
importance is electricity, or electrical tension, which essentially consists of the different charges acting between
two opposite poles – electrical excitation; brainwaves, for
example, can be measured on the basis of their electrical
charge.
Humans seek tension or excitement because they need
it, and if they don’t feel it, they become inventive – jumping from bridges while connected to a rubber cord, or
jumping out of airplanes with a parachute, setting out on
the wildest of expeditions and chasing after the craziest
of records, or, in less spectacular cases, by simply watching action films.
Governments and policymakers work systematically to
eliminate tension: every incident that falls under the heading of «accidents and crimes» spawns new rules and
state control. The imponderables of life are delegated to
the bureaucrats, and «social security» is deemed to be
the sacrosanct civilizing achievement of the modern social
state. Tension and excitement are now only produced in
our sports stadiums and by the media – there where the
majority of people play the role of spectator – making the
absence of excitement in our own lives all the more
starkly apparent. This naturally leads to a loss of vitality –
citizens wrapped in cotton wool lose their connection with
the lived-in world; tension and excitement are merely experienced second-hand and this is precisely what makes
humans depressive. Depression is one of the most rapidly
spreading illnesses of our times. The price for what we
call the modern law and order state is high – very high.
What medicine can counter these symptoms? LIVE
DANGEROUSLY (consult a specialist, physician or
pharmacist if you experience side effects or adverse
reactions). Oh yes, of course: in our legally overregimented world, a «disclaimer» would now be in order
stating that the author assumes absolutely no liability for
the written word because the victims, denied the opportunity to make their own choices, could suddenly resort to
the only possible deed left open to them – file a lawsuit
for liability and demand money, with ever improving odds
of winning! Actually, though, what is really called for,
would be for every single individual to assume liability
for his or her own life and decisions.
Does this have anything to do with our packaging solutions? It does indeed! Not only because they hold up to
tension, i.e. to stress and strain, thanks to their capacity –
with little material input – for resisting a myriad of forces,
but also because they generate excitement by concealing
the product, promoting curiosity and enticing the customer!
And what surprises await us this year? Whatever happens
– I wish you exciting times and, for the moment, an engrossing read.
Sincerely yours,
Daniel Model

Robust economic expansion in Europe
drives demand for packaging and
prices of paper
Robust economic growth in most countries of
Europe had a positive effect on packaging requirements in the past year. Demand for corrugated board and cardboard packaging grew at a
faster pace than in previous years in both Germany and Switzerland, whereas growth in
France was more modest. Economic growth in
the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia,
where we supply customers from our Central
European plants, set new records in 2007. The
packaging industry made its contribution to this
development, even if it did not reach the
heights of the automotive and construction industries.
One of the consequences of the favorable European economic environment was signs of
shortages in the raw materials market, in particular shortages of recycled container board
and starch. Although new paper capacity has
come on stream in recent years, because on
account of the removal of other capacity, it was
still not enough to satisfy demand growth in
full. The result was further price increases of
25% on average compared to the previous
year, in which there had already been substantial price hikes.
The development in supplies of raw materials
for cardboard packaging was less dramatic. But
in this segment, too, it was necessary to
lengthen delivery times and increase prices in
the middle of the year.
Group posts strong growth in
cardboard packaging
In the past year, the Model Group notched up
strong gains in all product segments and increased sales to CHF 700 million (+17.3%).
With volume growth of 18%, our cardboard
packaging plants in Au (CH), Hanau (D), Opava
(CZ) and Hostinné (CZ) posted the best performance. In this respect, the contribution of
the solid business trend among our chocolate
and confectionary customers was as significant
as the interesting new projects for high-end
cosmetic packaging and the growing demand
of regional and international customers who
are expanding production in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia.
MODEL GROUP 2007
packaging
exciting environment
exceeded the previous year’s production. Only
with further substantial investment can the
capacity of the two 2.5 m machines be raised.
Packaging serves expanded by
acquisition of co-packer
Besides manufacturing corrugated cardboard
packaging, Model also offers co-packaging
services, i.e. filling packaging with a customer’s products. At our Opava (CZ) site,
around 50 employees provide this service for
international and local customers.
At times in the past year, our plants were
working at the limits of their capacity, or even
beyond, which resulted in longer delivery
times. The situation eased a little in the second
half of the year as investments in machinery
and plant expansion at different sites began to
take effect.
In 2008, a new building planned for our cosmetics packaging operations in Hanau should
significantly increase capacity.
Stronger market position in offset
litho-laminated corrugated packaging
Our plants in Flamatt (CH), Opava (CZ) und
Czosnow (PL) increased sales of offset litholaminated corrugated board packaging by
around 10%. As a manufacturer of both offset
litho-laminated and flexoprinted corrugated
board products, we are aware of the limits to
substitution between the two applications.
Offset litho-lamination has not only managed to
maintain, but also expand its market position.
To meet new customer needs we installed a
new litho lamination line at our Flamatt plant at
the end of 2007.
Corrugated board: greater volumes and
awareness of raw materials
On the back of robust economic expansion,
sales of our nine corrugated board plants
recorded overall volume growth of 2.5%. In
this segment, too, some of our plants were
operating at the limits of their capacity in the
first half of the year. Among our sales markets,
Switzerland, Germany, Poland and Hungary enjoyed stronger growth for the year as a whole
than France, the Czech Republic and Croatia,
where price increases affected sales volumes.
Soaring paper prices have brought home to us
and our customers that paper is a valuable
commodity and that this situation is unlikely to
change in the future. The climate and energy
discussion has fuelled competition for wood
and energy, two major components of paper
production; moreover, there is strong demand
for European recycled paper in Asia, where collection quotas are still low.
In the end, the packaging product has to reflect, and the end consumer will have to pay,
the value of the raw material paper. Therefore,
in the past year we have focused on adjusting
our prices for corrugated board to reflect the
value of the raw materials used in its production. We have succeeded to some extent, as
expressed in lower gross margins.
Stable output for paper factory in
Weinfelden
With 141,157 tonnes of testliner and corrugating medium, Thurpapier Weinfelden marginally
At the end of 2007, we acquired another
Czech co-packer: KPM care s.r.o. in Nymburk.
This purchase enables us to considerably
strengthen our offering in this field.
Quality, innovation and attractiveness.
Perfecting packaging is our passion.
Quality and reliability in all fields, innovative and
attractive packaging solutions: these key factors have absolute priority in all Model corrugated board and cardboard plants, Pack Shops
and packaging services. To determine whether
we are successful and whether we have improved, we use key performance indicators
such as complaint ratios, supplier loyalty and
throughput times. Most of our plants are already operating at a high level or were able to
improve their indicators in the past year. Supplier loyalty suffered during times of capacity
bottlenecks, and some complaints could have
been obviated. We are well aware of the unpleasantness associated with such steps.
Model employs machinery of the highest quality and productivity in its plants. Every year, we
invest in upgrading and expanding our complement of machines. In 2007, capital investment
totaled CHF 51 million, of which 40% was
committed to the plants in Switzerland and
Germany and 60% to the plants in the Czech
Republic, Poland and Croatia. The larger part

Further quantitative and qualitative
growth in 2008
At the start of the new year the outlook for robust economic growth in Western and Central
Europe was still intact. The company plans capital spending of more than CHF 100 million.
The largest single investments are the complete refurbishment of the corrugated board
plant at Czosnów near Warsaw and a new
plant for Model Kramp GmbH at its Hanau site.

COMPETENCIES
Balanced and
moving ahead
The Model Group's operations are
broken down into six business areas:
cardboard and corrugated board packaging, offset printed and litho-laminated
packaging, standard packaging in
stock and container board. An optimal
environment is the basis for the
successful development of these
business areas.
Staff
Model has more than 2800 employees worldwide. Model’s overriding goal is to provide
high-quality, innovative solutions and services
for customers’ packaging needs. Model’s organization and corporate philosophy are defined in accordance with its FUTURA mission
statement, which enables each employee to
make a maximum contribution to the company’s success.
Network
Besides the employees, a significant factor is
a balanced network, which ensures that new
packaging solutions benefit from synergies and
experience within the Model Group. Each plant
is specialized in a specific mode of processing.
At head office in Weinfelden the Model Group’s
own paper factory for containerboard complements the production of corrugated board and
the associated processing machinery.
The Model Group has similar competence centers and processing facilities in Central and
Southeastern Europe. For further details about
the extended Model network, please see page
4 of this issue.
This network is supported by a balanced package of services and service solutions, which
can be drawn upon throughout a product’s
evaluation and development phase.
This service goes beyond the actual product
development to include offerings such as copacking services, which crucially influence and
simplify the customers’ distribution processes.
For that reason, since January 2008 KPM has
been part of the Model family. A long-established specialist, the company is a perfect fit
for the Model Group’s existing range of services in the Czech Republic.
Other services in the co-packing field have also
been expanded. To optimally serve the needs
of fruit & vegetable producers, in Switzerland
the Model Group offers a carton erector service. This guarantees that standardized corru-
Last year an offset litho-laminator was installed

gated board trays are delivered to the producer
already erected, which speeds up the filling
process.
Model also offers its customers an important
service as a manufacturer of special packaging
for hazardous goods. A team of specialists advises customers and, if the latter so wish, will
also be present at the sample tests and test
series carried out by the relevant institutions. If
the contents and the specifications are known,
customers can also simply order standardized
hazardous goods packaging by visiting
www.packshop.com.
Language
The primary goal of packaging is to present
products in a manner geared to the needs of
specific markets and groups. This is why
Model attaches importance to simple and clear
communication. Convince yourself that this is
the case by visiting www.modelgroup.com.
The page provides a clear and easy-to-use introduction to Model’s products and services.
COMMITMENT
Highlights
Dedicating efforts toward helping children is
a matter of great importance to the Model
Group. In the Czech Republic as well, the past
year saw several new children’s projects
launched and previously conceived initiatives
likewise continued.
«Don’t look away…»
An exhibition organized under this title was
presented in May at St. Wenceslas Church in
the city of Opava. The purpose was to draw attention to the ten most endangered species of
animals on our planet.
Authentic background music greeted school
children and other interested visitors in a jungle
constructed of paper and cardboard. Tropical
palm trees made from cardboard underscored
the effect of the photographs mounted on
cardboard showing our planet’s most endangered animal species. All of the proceeds from
this and other events were donated to people
in need.
Christmas cards for the «Barriers»
account
In an ongoing initiative that started over 11
years ago, Model Obaly has produced some 75
thousand Christmas cards in benefit of the
«Barriers» account. The goal of this project is
to eliminate barriers for handicapped persons
in schools in the Czech Republic, making these
facilities fully accessible to all. Thanks to this
contribution, efforts have succeeded in modifying 137 schools to ensure accessibility to the
physically challenged students attending these
institutions.
First children’s festival
Another children’s festival took place in September at the sports facility of the Techtex
company in the Czech town of Hostinné.
Visitors young and old were treated to a performance by the Brno Theatre of a piece entitled «Friends» as well as shows by the Marionette Theater. Celebrated mime and actor
Michal Nesvadba also appeared, as did the
Maxim Turbulenc Group. In the intermissions,
there were creative activities for the children to
get involved in such as folding packages together, putting together pictures, sack races,
tug-of-war games, fishing and constructing
dice.
Model organizes «Superstar»
competition
Model is also active in the entertainment sector! For the second time now, the entertainment show «Model for Moravské Budějovice»
was held on the grounds of the outdoor cinema in Moravské Budějovice, a «Superstar»
style competition for local young children and
teenagers. It is modeled after the world famous casting show. Twelve participants from
the semi-final round competed according to
their respective age groups for first place, and
Model awarded the winners in each category
with attractive prizes.
Young Packaging 2007
At the Brno Trade Fair «EmbaxPrint», a competition attracting somewhat older youths was
held once again for young packaging designers
under the title of «Young Packaging». All told,
some 425 young designers from 18 countries
presented their work in three competitive categories. The competition is organized every year
by the Design Centre of the Czech Republic in
collaboration with Model Obaly as partner and
sponsor and with the support of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations
(ICOGRADA).
Investment at Moravské Budějovice
Investment is a priority objective at Model's
Moravské Budějovice plant, both the budgeted
investments realized in 2007 and the capital investment plans for 2008.
Among other things, in 2007 Model Obaly installed a new Curioni Model 4100 Plus flexo
printer slotter with two flexo printing units and
rotary die cutting.
The plant not only invested in its machinery,
but also undertook structural changes and refurbishments. For instance, the plant canteen
and the sanitation facilities were remodeled. A
new conference room and a new instruction
and training room provide space for even more
constructive discussions.
New MAN Roland 708 Series press is
dedicated and presented at Model
Kramp
In the presence of business partners, friends
and employees, Model Kramp dedicated its
new MAN Roland R 708 series printing machine in April 2007 after successful completion
of the equipment test phase. Among the 250
guests invited to attend were Ms. Elisabeth
Model, CEO of Model Kramp and member of
Model Group Management, Dr. Markus Rall,
board member of MAN Roland and Mr. Horst
Hupke, representative of the city of Hanau,
Germany.
With this eight-color double-varnish press,
Model Kramp expands the range of finishing
processes it offers to include features sought
in particular by the cosmetics industry. Additional iriodine, metallic, matt and gloss effects
can be achieved.
A machine jointly configured by MAN Roland
and Model Kramp, it utilizes state-of-the-art
technologies that are truly unique worldwide.
Particular attention in these efforts was devoted to ecological aspects. This demonstrates
just how important a sense of responsibility towards the environment is to the Model Group.
Higher production capacities and
greater product selection
Construction work at Model TekPak in Czosnów, Poland, began this past fall. Completion
of erection is scheduled for mid 2008. Several
converting machines and a 2.8-m-wide corrugated board machine are to commence operation. The new storage facilities and expanded
production space created provide for even
greater efficiency and flexibility in the fabrication of packaging.
Meeting Point Cosmetic in Poland
For the first time, company executives and
marketing celebrities from the Polish cosmetics industry came together at a «Meeting Point
Cosmetic». Model Kramp and Model
Opakowania jointly hosted the event, inviting
personages from across the cosmetics scene.
In interesting presentations and case studies,

100 years of Toblerone
The Toblerone triangles have been a feature of
the marketplace for 100 years. This special
1.80 m standing display interactively presents
the Toblerone story. Images printed on 2 x 5 triangular columns in a lamellar arrangement narrate Toblerone's history. Consumers can turn
the columns and follow the story at their own
pace.
The unmistakeable Toblerone triangles appear
all over the display. Different printing techniques have been skilfully combined to good
effect. The display contains more than 200 elements in flexo, offset and digital printing.
As it was designed for the Swiss market, it is
available in three languages.
Milka displays with Flowpac
The new Milka chocolate bars
available in a practical and useful
Flowpac in this new Milka
display case present an
excellent picture. The
chocolate bars packed in
the individual trays are
hung in place by means
of an ingenious hooking
system. The display is
thus loaded easily and
efficiently. The display
topper is printed in an offset process, while the
rest of the display is flexo
printed. The sides are removable and can be easily exchanged for special
promotional actions or
events.
Nestlé Noir
Dark chocolate is gaining in popularity and
stands for exquisite culinary
pleasure. Hence, Nestlé has launched a new
line of chocolate, «Nestlé Noir», on the French
market. These deliciously fine chocolate bars
are packaged in a high-quality black cardboard
wrapper further ennobled with two-level embossing as well as matt and gloss effects.
Chocolate display case from Halba
Chocolats Halba presents its 24 newly
designed chocolate bars, neatly and lucidly
arranged in this handy showcase. The unusual,
flexographically printed display model is
portable and unfolds to stand on its own.
This innovative idea has met with very positive
feedback from the market as well as users.
publisuisse's talking «Star Box»
Polydono and Model InoPac collaborated on
the development of filled, folding-lid box as a
direct mailing for publisuisse. The advertising
message was distributed to a select television
advertising clientele in connection with the
European football championship UEFA EURO
2008TM. When the box is opened a talking chip
delivers a message in German, French or
Italian.
A 4-colour offset printed sheet in a green and
lacquer design was litho laminated onto both
sides of B-flute corrugated board. A velourcoated corrugated board insert holds the contents in place. Model InoPac AG filled the
whole set, packed it in wrapping, addressed
and dispatched it directly to the recipient.
«Symphonie», by Suchard
Suchard Symphonie is an exclusive
assortment of the finest, classic
pralines of top Swiss quality and
reflects an appreciation for the
highest of standards. Such a
sense of appreciation is emphasized by the elegant packaging.
The lettering of the «Symphonie»
name is refined by hot foil embossing. The two-level embossing of the depicted
pralines complete this picture of elegance.

Trainee «Christmas gift»
project
The Model Group places
high importance on
educating and
training its
trainees. It
endeavors to assign
junior staff to tasks that are
directly related to actual practice. This is why
Model PrimePac again in 2007 has called on its
trainees to create high-quality Christmas
packaging. These efforts yielded a thoroughly
convincing Christmas packaging product from
both a visual as well as functional standpoint.
Hugo Boss – playful power
of attraction
Hugo XX and Hugo XY stand for the provocative game between man and woman. Two
evenly matched partners enjoy the game of
contrasts and irresistible power of attraction.
The folded box design takes on and reflects
these traits in the contrasting metallic black
and gold colors. The bottle, printed on its
sides, imitates an aerosol spray can in its design. The bottle’s contours are embossed to
further accentuate the shape. The metallicbased matt and gloss effects create an arc of
tension that underscores the high quality of the
products and brand.
ARTISTGUIDE
Aquila – skin care creams
The boxes’ silver metallic foil is printed using
hybrid-color technology.
The combination of offset effect and UV lacquering is modeled on the texture of human
skin. Embossing raises and accentuates the
product name on the package surface.
Becherovka – gift packaging celebrating 200-year anniversary
Printed with hybrid colors in an offset
process, the opaque white combined with offset effect and UV lacquering creates this high-quality gift
packaging. The printed sheet in the
form of a laminated metallic foil is
laminated onto E-flute corrugated
board. A circular window punched free
in the front cover provides a circular
window revealing the products inside,
held in place by an insert.
Polyjoiner
Spices and spice mixtures can be packaged
more quickly thanks to these two-section
packages. Discount trade specifications that
goods must remain stacked in individual layers on pallets and
that only the front
side of
packaging may be detached are
thereby satisfied. If only the top
cover is detached, the goods can
be easily displayed and offered to
customers in countertop and offthe-shelf sales situations.
The advantage of this packaging is the absence
of bothersome fraying at the tear-off perforations of the shaped cut-outs, and handling
is simplified. In addition, transport and storage
costs are reduced.
Special packaging for sea and
air transport
Container boxes like this one can be used to
safely transport either 4 or 6 bottles, each
containing 800 ml of acid. Thanks to the built-in
compartments, the bottles cannot slide and
the outside dimensions of the package remain
unaltered.
This five-layer corrugated board packaging has
successfully passed state laboratory drop
testing to UN test standards for sea and air
transport.
Polsat Cyfrowy
This 6-color-printed offset litho-laminated packaging assumes protective as well as advertising functions. It contains digital satellite receiver components.
Candy mill in shelf-ready packaging
The candy mills arrive from transportation perfectly packed and ready for display on the
shelf. All the merchandiser has to do is simply
remove the covering. A microflute (E-flute) was
used for the packaging. The coated paper employed enhances the discreet print effect.
Honey ready for dispatch
The Christinger company has a surprise in
store for its customers: honey in honeycombshaped packaging. Together with the honey,
the digitally printed spring meadow will drive
away the last remnants of tiredness.

INOFLEX · THURPAPIER
Inoflex – Precision
die cutting to order
Inoflex started its activities as a separate department within Model AG. At
that time, the die cutting tools were
drawn, bored and sawn by hand.
Thurpapier 2007 –
A year of rising costs
For the paper factory of the Model Group 2007
was a challenging year in more than one respect.
The company experienced strong demand for
container board practically throughout the year.
This development was primarily due to high
levels of capacity utilization in the packing industry and the absence of any new paper capacity that would have increased supply.
A solid partnership between customer and
supplier acquires added significance in extreme situations such as this, which also test
how well the partnership really functions in
practice.
This department has since developed to a
modern die cutting tool manufacturer and is integrated in the Weinfelden site. Most preparations today are largely performed automatically.
However, even today there is still a great deal
of manual work in each individual die cutting
tool. Inoflex AG responds very quickly and flexibly to individual customer requests. The die
cutting tools produced are used for die cutting
materials such as corrugated board, cardboard,
paper, foam, leather or foil.
mm at a maximum speed of 50,000 rpm in
multiple passes. These grooved die cutting
plates are used primarily in folding box production and are increasingly replacing the conventional counterplates (pertinax), as the quality of
creasing is significantly improved and tooling
times in preparation can be reduced.
Materials such as strip steel, rubber ejectors,
embossings, dot peenings, conductive bridges
and counterplates are required for producing
die cutting tools. Efficient and smooth use of
modern production systems requires that the
necessary programs be correctly and precisely
prepared on the CAD programming system.
Rubber surfaces are conically cut fully automatically using a 5-axis water jet cutting machine,
which has significantly improved their quality
and reproducibility. The whole surface gummings developed and patented in close cooperation with Model AG have also proven to be an
optimal solution in the corrugated packaging
segment. With the ProCount 1712 CNC milling
machine newly installed in late December
2007, Inoflex has astutely expanded its own
machinery park, and can produce the previously outsourced grooved die cutting plates inhouse since mid-January 2008. Thanks to this
investment, the company can now cover the
entire product spectrum with its own production, further increasing added value and productivity. The grooved die cutting plates consist of a 1- 1.4 mm thick stainless sheet with
three different hardnesses from 185 – 500 HV
(Vickers hardness). A solid carbide cutting bit is
used to mill grooves in these plates with a
width of 1 – 2.5 mm and a depth of 0.8 – 1.2
10
Inoflex not only efficiently designs its own production processes, but it also works to optimize customer processes with joint problem
solving. In addition to conventional die cutting
tools, Inoflex therefore also produces various
stripping and stacking tools as well as separating tools which ensure shorter tooling times on
the die cutters.
Facts & Figures
The company currently consists of 16 employees who produce 25 die cutting tools daily and
supply customers in Switzerland and abroad.
Thurpapier produces 141,000 tonnes a year of
linerboard and fluting from 100% recycled materials. Of this production, 50% is sold to
Model Group packaging plants and 50% comprises external sales in Western Europe.
Solid sales growth is one side of the coin, but
there is also another less satisfactory side.
Profit margins have come under pressure from
cost increases – some of them enormous – at
all stages of the manufacturing process.
The topic of starch is more pressing than ever.
Apart from extreme price increases (+ 80%),
there were also shortages of locally produced
potato starch. On account of the bad harvest in
the previous year and alternative marketing
channels in addition to paper production, including interesting markets such as the cosmetics and food industries, suppliers were unable to fulfill orders. The company had to resort
to supplies of tapioca starch from Thailand.
One, if not the, challenge of 2007 was energy.
The huge increases in oil and gas prices
weighed on cost structures in 2007. Paper
manufacturing is affected particularly heavily by
this expense, as the production process is very
energy intensive.
In an attempt to mute this cost explosion to
some extent, prices of corrugated board were
increased substantially, much to the chagrin of
the packaging industry.
In November 2007, Thurpapier’s entire management system was successfully recertified
by SQS. The quality certification ISO
9001:2000 and the environment certification
ISO 14001:2004 are valid for another three
years.
The new Thurpapier crew faces the challenges
of 2008 full of optimism and verve.
