REPERTORY
TORRE DE POLANCO
What is now known as “Castle dance” or “Dance of
Polanco’s Tower” was compiled at the end of the
first quarter century by the great writer Jose María
de Pereda.
Youngers from the village of Polanco and again
formed triumphal arches to pass the holy
procession underneath. They were preceded by a
man carrying a long cane, with a bladder attached
at the end, who opened the road.
The tower was formed at the end of the party and
served as a platform for one of them who hurl the
cheers of rigor, and also the farewell to the
authorities and other key people.
LOS PICAYOS
The dance of Picayos was used as a part of the ritual of the feasts and also to honor the
arrival in town of some important character.
Women standing in two rows, one in front to another, carrying tambourines playing the
rhythm of “torta y leche” while male dancers play castanets around them and the patron
saint.
Lyrics always begin with a salute to the authorities and a request for permission to
dance and continue with verses that describe the life of the patron saint, hence that this
dance is also known as “dancing saint”.
DANZA DE CINTAS
Apparently the dance of Cintas had a remarkable
presence in the eastern geography of Cantabria;
although there is data about it was danced in
Lamadrid, La Revilla and Cabuérniga as well.
In despite of there is not any melody used for this
dance, it is usual to distinguish the phases which, in
the slang of the dancers, are identified as “to make
and break ties”.
LA BAILA DE IBIO
It is the choreography created by Matilde de la
Torre basically based in Lanzas Dance, danced in
the village of Ruiloba. She took some fragments of
this dance and changed the sound of castanets by
the winkle. In this way, ancient times were evoked
when primitive warriors gathered when the winkle
was played, armed with spears to defend the salt
of Cabezón de la Sal of attacks from neighboring
tribes.
LA RUEDA
This dance called “dance of the wheel” is native
from Campoo, which it was danced as the
beginnning of pilgrimages; although there are not
any documents about that.
Young men arranged in a line in front of the girls
and a ternary rhythm as a waltz melody was
played, with the following lyrics “A bailar que ya
pasa la rueda y has de bailar con soltura y compás…”, while dancers make different sets
and combinations between pairs.
Previously, this dance was performed by two instruments played at the same time but
since the first decades of XX century tambourines and the requinto with the drum are
also used.
EL TREPELETRE
The trepeletré was a dance in the westsouth of Cantabria, in Liébana, an amazing site
located in Picos de Europa. It is a very funny dance, in which jumps and turns are to the
sound of tambourines and castanets. Lyrics are full of nonsensical ideas such this: “al
estribillo madre al estribillo, una pulga saltando rompe un ladrillo”. Dancers develope
gracefully and even with some mischief looking for a partner to their taste.
ROMANCE DEL CONDE DE LARA
Dance of romance seems to have a clear courtier origin which stately elegance, is
highlighted by this group.
Definitely is one of a few cases of traditional romance which is danced and singed at the
same time. It is one of the most ancient of oral tradition “El romance del conde sol”
which Menéndez Pidal consagrate as la “boda estorbada”.
EL PERICOTE
The dance of Pericote is a festive and joyeus dance from Picos de Europa. The melody
seems monotonous but it holds great vividness and rhythmic force, the most common is
that the music stand is the drum, the voice, the tambourines and the castanets and in
some important parties also the piper. One of the characteristics of the dance of Pericote
is that each dancer looks for a partner dancing with two girls at the same time. Dancers
intersect each other as they go dancing so everyone try to get pass between the other
two people.
DANZA DE ARCOS
Despite bans along the history some professional dances have been
conserved until nowadays, as in the case of the dance of “arcos”. Youngers
carrying flexible poles festooned with coloured paper curly manually; it is
danced to the sound of the flute and the drum by chaining series of
figures like “abrir el corro”, “danza cerrada”, “danza abierta”, “tejida” or
“engarzada”, “la culebra”, “la horca” and “la danza de arcos”.
An unique character called “zorromoco” captivates the attention of the
public. He is some kind of clown, whose main ward is blashing bladder
any viewer who does not respect the distances established to the
dancers. There are “zorromocos” who instead of a bladder holds a
small cane or a scepter which has on the end a tail of fox
continues.
LA DANZA DE PALILLOS
The dance of palillos was the beginning of
festivities early in the morning in many villages
of eastern Cantabria. Young men were joined
to the dulzaina sound and started to dance
palillos and overran the neighborhoods of the
village, asking for from a house to house and
throwing live their owners.
The dance, is differentiated into two parts
and often included as melodic support in the
second, the theme of children´s song
“Mambrú se fue a la guerra”.
LA RUEDA (NO TENGO NOVIO)
It is a dance from Los Corrales de Buelna, danced in a circle, young men and women
dance in pairs as a kind of slow jota, they move in circles doing different steps and
figures, changing partners…
EL CUEVANUCO
In the 1941 the musician Esteban Guzmán, who made a
great folklore investigation work, found out an interesting
pericote and rueda dances in Lores, Palencia. His scores
were taked by the Dance Group Female Tract of Palencia as
a base for making a new choreography. It was called as el
cuevanito because the song accompanying is a popular
song which refers to pasiegos as well as details of their
clothing, like “chátaras” and just the “cuévano”; which was
added to the dancers attire.
It was liked to groups from Cantabria who inmediately
made the decision to make it themselves theme.
LA JOTA
The rhythm of jota montañesa is inevitably linked to a past time. They were danced in
the light of the lamp in the kitchens of light on the floor, together the voice, the
tambourine or the rabel, as is remembered in Polaciones, with the tambourines
accompanied by the drum, as the Liebana´s style or to the sound of musicians at
holiday time, either with the requinto or dulzaina.
At first “a lo bajo” or “a lo pesao” with a slowly moment, and later “a lo ligero” also
called “a lo mudao” with cheerfulness, between two dancers to take up the slack.
