The 2015 Grand Prize Raffle Fly Rod
T
he Driftless Region is known for its small,
overgrown streams, casting to tight spots
likely to hold larger, more discriminating
fish. An angler needs every advantage in these
situations. The new TXL-F rods can provide a
considerable advantage for anyone. The TXLF series of stream rods from Sage have been
introduced as the replacement to the much-loved
TXL series. The added “F” stands for feel. The
new TXL-Fs are on average a full third lighter
than their TXL ancestors. And given that sensitivity and feel typically increase as a rod’s weight
declines, the result is a sensitivity gain for the angler. Sage has achieved this through further refining their proprietary G5 construction technology. TXL-F rods load
fully and cast dart-like tight loops.
They are a great deal crisper-casting than any light line rod developed to date. A TXL-F rod is a
delight to use on any small water,
but really excels on those waters
which demand accurate casting at
short to medium distance. A new
TXL-F rod is unlike anything else
you have fished with before. This
year’s rod is paired with Sage’s 4230 fly reel. A
4230 fly reel offers superior performance without
excess bulk or weight. It is machined of aerospace-grade 6061-T6 aluminum and reel features
the sophisticated Floating Tripod graphite disc
drag system. The total retail price of the outfit is
over $1500.

rom Monticello, IA, Mike Jacobs has been a fly fisherman and
fly tier almost his entire life. He has fished countless numbers
of Iowa streams, lakes and rivers for all species of fish. Mike
has also fished several fisheries out West. In addition, Mike is an accomplished fly tier with his own patterns featured in several publications, including Fly Tyer Magazine. Mike is also a fly tying materials dealer known as the Hawkeye Fly Tyer (sites.google.com/site/

Rich Osthoff
R
ich Osthoff is a noted author,
fly tier and fly fishing guide
from western Wisconsin.
Rich has developed innovative trout,
steelhead, and warm-water flies for
use throughout the Upper Midwest.
Rich has a wealth of experience on
fly fishing the Western United States.
His first book, Fly-Fishing the Rocky
Mountain Backcountry (1999), is
based on 20 summers of hiking and
fishing throughout the wilderness
areas of the Rocky Mountain range.
From the trophy golden trout waters of the Wind River Range, to the rainbows deep within Black Canyon of
the Gunnison, to the premier westslope cutthroat trout rivers of Montana and Idaho, it’s the only first-hand account of exploring wilderness waters throughout the Rockies.
Rich’s experience is not limited to out West. He guides fly fishing for trout on his home waters—the fertile
spring creeks of western Wisconsin. Rich’s second book, No Hatch To Match (2001), is contains insights
into fly-fishing resourcefully between Upper Midwest and Western hatches. From anticipating temperatureinduced feeding, to prospecting at a productive pace, to identifying and exploiting habits of active trout, his
work consists of innovative techniques and patterns. On Sunday, Rich will offer insights during his presentation entitled: Presenting the Fly.
Osthoff’s most recent book, Active Nymphing (2006), demonstrates a different approach to traditional fly fishing with nymphs. Rich’s dynamic nymphing strategies illustrates that it is moving the nymph on a tight line,
not dead-drifting on a slack line, that gives you precise manual control over the speed, path, and the behavior
of the nymph. The book includes fly-casting weighted nymphs with high line speeds and near dry-fly accuracy.
His presentation, Casting Techniques for the Driftless, will further elaborate on the techniques necessary for
catching fish in Iowa’s streams and rivers.
