The main pyrotechnics take place on 5 November, but events run into the weekend. In addition to the celestial displays, family-friendly activities include fun fairs, food stalls, and shows. Most events are ticketed, but some – including the Blackheath Fireworks night on 7 November – remain free to attend. The larger-than-life event, which is held at the Phraya Surin Phakdi Si Narong Chang Wang Monument, will see some 60 tonnes of food served on a table measuring 400 metres long for the gentle giants. A total of 279 elephants will be lining up in single file to form a record-breaking queue of hungry pachyderms. Surin is located just over two hours by car from Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand’s northeast. DEV DEEPAWALI VARANASI, INDIA The 2015-2016 edition of Dubai’s cultural extravaganza kicks off this month, heralding the start of a seasonal open-air theme park that lasts five months. The entertainment and shopping destination will feature over 36 pavilions, more than 50 fun rides, and 26 restaurants. Special attractions include sand sculptures at Al Remal Pit, the Prehistoric Oceanarium, lantern art at Illumination World, and a 3D Haunted House. The traditional schedule of spiritual events includes prayers and offerings to Lord Ganesh; devotees also take a dip in the holy river to symbolically rid themselves of their sins. Every ghat (riverside stepped embankment) and temple in the city is lit with countless earthen lamps (diyas) on the night, while locals and tourists throng the riverside to watch the spectacular aarti religious rituals at the ghats amidst countless flickering candles. This year’s edition, held at Grand Palais, will also see over 143 galleries from 33 countries presenting historical and contemporary works. Collectors, art professionals, artists and amateur photographers are all welcome to join the week of exhibitions, events, talks, and book signings. Billed as the largest J-Pop culture event in Southeast Asia, the event attracted 90,000 attendees last year to experience the best of Japanese pop culture. The main Odori Park site becomes a brilliant winter wonderland of some 450,000 lights forming Christmas-themed illuminated structures, while twinkling light curtains drape the trees along Sapporo Ekimae Dori and Minami 1-jyo streets.
