Bear’s Paw
(Seam Allowance ¼ “)
Cut:
Four 2½” squares Cream
Four 6½” x 2½” strips Cream
One 2½” square Mid Pink
Four 4½” squares Green
One 2½” x 25” approx strip Cream
One 2½” x 25” approx strip Dark Red
1. Using Easy Angle Template, cut sixteen
triangles from both 2½” x 25” strips.
2. Sew triangles together to make squares.
Press seams open and flat.
3. Take four of these squares, one 2½”
Cream square and one 4½” Green
square. Arrange pieces as shown.
4. Sew pairs of triangles to make two short
strips.
5. Join one 2½” Cream square to end of one of
these strips.
6. Attach these strips to sides of Green square. Sew
the shorter one first then attach the longer one - try
to match seams and watch the points!
7. On completion press the seams open and flat.
8. Make three more identical sections.
9. Arrange the four sections with the remaining strips
and sew together.
10. Press block carefully
Why not make more???
Hexagons
(Seam Allowance ¼ “)
This circular arrangement of hexagons is sometimes
called ‘Grandmother’s Flower Garden’
Cut seven hexagons - three Mid Pink, three Green and
one Light Green were used here.
Cut a 3½”wide short strip in relevant colour.
From this strip cut correct number of hexagons
as shown.
Arrange the hexagons carefully making very sure that
the straight grain of the hexagons runs in the same
direction. This action will help the completed block lie
flat.
On W/S of each hexagon, mark dots at corners of
hexagon. Mark dots ¼ “ from sides - see below.
1. Take the top two hexagons and sew
together. START and FINISH the stitching
between the dots.
2. Take next row of three hexagons and sew
together. START and FINISH the stitching
between the dots.
Now for the fun bit!!
Sewing hexagons together is a series of Y seams. The stitching starts and stops between the dots
marked on the hexagons. Do not let any previously stitched seam get caught in the current line of
stitching. If you stitch along the join between the hexagons in a series of short individual seams
and sew between the dots - this works well.
3. Join last two hexagons as Stage 1. Sew these
in place using the same technique as shown
above. Lie down in darkened room and relax!
4. Press seams
open and flat.
5. Place
hexagon block
R/S down on
interfacing.
Pin in place.
Sew round the
outside edge
using ¼ “ S/A
6. Trim interfacing, clip corners off the hexagon block and
clip inner corners. Slit interfacing carefully.
7. Turn R/S out through slit in interfacing. Gently poke the
corners out - the bamboo pointer is excellent for this.
8. Cut one
Cream 14½”
square. Fold
and press this
square in half
diagonally
and across the
sides.
Place the hexagon block in the centre aligning sides with
the pressed creases. Pin well.
9. Sew round the outside edge. This can be done by
hand (perish the thought) or by machine using either the
Blind Hem stitch or any applique stitch pattern.
.
10. To reduce bulk, cut interfacing and Cream
background fabric away from the back - be careful and
DO NOT cut through the hexagons!
Goose Tracks
(Seam Allowance ¼ “)
Cut one Mid Pink 2” x 28” approx strip. Fold
strip in half.
From this strip
cut four sets of
diamonds.
Keep these sets of
diamonds
together
Repeat with Dark
Red material.
Cut four 2 5/8” Cream
squares
Cut two 4¼” Cream
squares. Divide these
squares into four
triangles.
Cut four Green 4” triangles using the Easy Angle template.
Arrange four diamonds,
two Cream triangles and
one square plus one Green
triangle. BUT make very
certain that the grain of
the triangles is running
correctly.
The sides of the diamonds beside the sides of the centre
square should be on the straight grain - the bias (stretchy)
side of the diamonds must be beside the Cream triangles .
This is important to help ensure that the completed block
lies flat.
Goose Tracks is also a block with Y seams. It pays to
mark dots at corners of diamonds. Mark dots ¼ “ from
sides.
1. Sew two diamonds together. Start sewing at the dot
and continue to end of seam.
2. Insert one Cream
triangle into the ‘V’
between a set of
diamonds. Sew from
the dot to the end of the
seam.
3. Turn block and re-align raw edge
of triangle with side of diamond.
Sew from dot to end of seam.
4. Repeat with the other set of diamonds
and one Cream triangle.
6. Sew both sets together starting stitching at the marked dot and sew to end of
seam.
7. Insert one Cream 2 5/8” square.
Last Y seam!
Sew from the centre out - starting at the
dot and sewing to end of seam. Turn
block, re-align raw edges. Either sew to
the to the dot or start at the dot.
With luck the picture on the left should be the result.
Press seams open and flat carefully.
8. Complete this section by sewing
the Green 4” triangle in place.
Sew block with triangle underneath
so that you can sew through the junction of the points of the diamonds.
I live in hope!
Press seam towards outer edge.
9. Trim block to 5 5/8” square.
10. Steel your self and make
three more identical blocks!
11. Cut four 5 5/8” x 4¼” strips
plus one Mid Pink 4¼” square.
12. Lay out all the pieces as
shown and sew together to
form the completed design.

Over the last three Classrooms - nine blocks have been made - lay these out and decide whihc one
looks best where.
I have arranged my Red and Green blocks like this... It is your choice as to how they are placed.
On the next Classroom - quilting the work and creating a Quag will be shown.
Happy Twiddles
Jennie.
