Wine dinner tickets are sure to sell out, so act fast. A portion of the proceeds benefits our neighbor Mote Marine. This year the golf operations team is excited to show off a completely renovated Links on Longboat golf course. World renowned architect Ron Garl did a complete renovation that included adding new features to the golfers playing experience. Grass fairway bunkers, new tee box areas, 100% Platinum Paspalum grass throughout the entire course and new, creatively landscaped areas will make the golfer really have to strategize how to play the hole. With the installation of all the new Platinum Paspalum, you will get to enjoy a wonderful playing surface that is second to none. At the Harbourside course more work was done to give the Blue Heron and Red Hawk a “beachy” feel by removing over 100 of the Australian Pines. The Blue Heron and Red Hawk have really benefited from a years’ worth of growth in the newly laid Paspalum grass and playing conditions have been at a premium. Next year the plan is to finish the renovation with the completion of the White Egret showcasing 45 beautiful holes, completely carpeted with Platinum Paspalum grass. Be sure to wear green and cheer on the local team for the St. Patrick’s celebration match at the Polo field. We are excited to bring a new teaching professional into the mix here at Longboat Key Club, Barry Cheesman. Some of you may already be familiar with Barry as he has been giving lessons in the area for almost 7 years. He will officially be starting on a full time basis in October, and we are excited to have him out on the courses assisting members with their game. Originally from Galesburg, Illinois, Barry has made a name for himself on many sporting fronts, including football, baseball and basketball. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1977, he played minor league baseball for four years, which eventually brought him to Bradenton. Barry did not start to play golf seriously until 1986, at which time he won the Florida State Amateur Championship and was Low Amateur in the Florida Open. Shortly after, he decided to turn pro and set the PGA Tour in his sights. Successfully securing a spot on his second attempt at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament, he began an 18 year career of playing professional golf at the highest level. Playing almost 400 tournaments between the PGA and Web.com Tours, he amassed a combined 26 top 10 finishes, with a career best 3rd place finish on the PGA Tour and 2 wins on the Web.com Tour. 12 CLUB EXPERIENCE Midway through the 2006 Web.com season, Barry decided to retire from the Tour to follow his passion for baseball. As a scout for the Houston Astros, he evaluated amateur talent for the Major League Draft. After spending two years in professional baseball, Barry decided to return his focus to teaching golf where he can bring his golf knowledge to the masses, teaching players of all skill levels from junior golfers to professionals that compete on tours around the world. He resides in Sarasota with his wife Kerry. They have a son, Aaron, daughter-inlaw Laura, and two grandchildren, Addison and Jackson. Sandra Rios, Director of Marketing and Communications sat CLUB EXPERIENCE 13 with Barry for a short Q&A. Question Being a professional golfer is a career a lot of young players dream about. What are some of the highlights of your professional career, and what advice would you give to aspiring young players? Barry Shooting 67 in the final round at Tour Qualifying Tournament at PGA West to get my PGA Tour Card (1990) and finishing 3rd in the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill, where I shot a 66 in the final round, my best career finish. To aspiring players, work hard and be patient. It takes time to hone your skills to be a top notch player. Set your sights and goals high and work towards them every day. Always remember, someone else is out there working harder than you are if you are not giving it your all. Question Did you always want to play golf and at what age did you first get out on a course or driving range? Barry I loved golf as a kid but aspired to be a baseball player. I played for fun with my friends. When I wasn’t playing baseball I was at the golf course during the summer months. Question Golf takes a lot of tenacity, patience and practice. What are some of the things that have motivated you to succeed? Barry Playing multiple sports as a kid made me very competitive. When I played professional baseball and failed, I realized just how hard you have to work to succeed. Question What individual has most influenced your career? Barry My father, he introduced me to the game. He would always take me to the course and encouraged me to have fun. Question Equipment is always a topic of conversation in the clubhouse. What are your thoughts on some of the newest equipment and the latest trends in technology? Barry Technology has advanced incredibly in the last few years. If you are playing with clubs that are older than five years, you’re not playing to your fullest potential. Technological advances have driven the game at the highest levels and those advances are available to every golfer to take advantage of. Question How do you see the game of golf evolving over the next ten years? Barry I see technology continue to improve equipment. Tournament players will keep getting better and if I can help it, so will the average player. 14 CLUB EXPERIENCE Question There is discussion about creating new rules for senior, leisure golfers. What are your thoughts about this? Barry The rules of golf are put together to make competition fair. The best thing for the average and senior golfer is a program from the PGA of America, Tee It Forward. It allows players to enjoy the game without the stress that comes from a highly competitive environment. Question Recently, there was a lot of controversy about the cover of the May issue of Golf Digest. What do you see as the future of women’s golf? Barry The LPGA is gaining momentum because the players are very talented. After talking to many women golfers, they seem to be struggling with enjoying the game. I believe they would have more fun if golf courses added additional forward tees to make the course shorter for ladies. That would give them more tee choices to play from based on their ability level. I believe more women would stay in the game longer. Question Barry Cheesman is writing a note to his younger self. What does it say? Barry Dear Barry, no matter what you decide to do in life, give it your all. You can achieve anything you put your heart and mind to. Question If you had the power to change any one thing in the world in the next day, what would it be? Barry I would encourage people to communicate face to face more. Technology has created more text communication and the true meaning is getting lost. Question If you could meet any one person, either back in time or present day, who would it be and why? Barry Playing and talking with some of the all-time greats of the game like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Byron Nelson, Gary Player, Tiger Woods, to name a few, has given me a great perspective on the way the game has evolved through the years. I would have loved to talk with some of the old school teachers like Harvey Penick, author of “The Little Red Book”, to learn more about how teaching and communicating was done with some of the greats of the past. I would love to learn the old style tricks old time teachers learned by years of experience. Favorite quote - “Aim small, miss small” - Mel Gibson, The Patriot Favorite color - Red. T he upgrades to Links on Longboat are complete and the course is better than ever! Just after the Memorial Day holiday we started the final transition to wall-to-wall Platinum Paspalum grass throughout the course. Last year we planted twenty acres of this lush, salt-tolerant grass when we renovated the greens, 6 tee boxes and the twelfth hole. As you know we also replanted the Red and Blue nines on Harbourside as well. This 3.5 million dollar process started with two weeks of killing the old Bermuda grass using the safest management practices to date. While waiting on the old turf to die back, Total Golf Construction Company started the creation of some new native areas. We started the renovation/restoration process at the north end of the course on holes 5, 4 and 6 and south. By the end of this July the front nine was fully grassed. Architect Ron Garl’s design goals are similar to last year. We want to make the course more player friendly, more sustainable and recapture its old Florida beachside charm. Some of the tangible changes you will experience to this end are with the tees, the fairway bunkers, and the out of play native areas. The teeing grounds have been raised and leveled using laser grading technology, improving your sight lines and overall playability of the course. Square footage will be significantly increased and the shape will be restored to the classic square sides. The fairway bunkers will be softened, more playable, and well drained with sand matching greenside bunkers. In the case of hole 6, the fairway bunker has been removed and replaced with a grass depression to keep errant shots out of the water. The native area design is intended to take areas normally out of play and fashion them into sustainable beachscape. This reduces our carbon footprint moving forward while adding an old Florida frame to the Links on Longboat. Clavelin Full (620 ml) This seldom seen wine bottle size is used for Vin Juane, the yellow wine of the Jura region of France. Bottle (750 ml) Liter (1000 ml) This unusual wine bottle size holds the middle ground between a full bottle and magnum. It was popularized in California by Grace Family Vineyards. Magnum (1.5 liters, 2,750 ml bottles) Marie Jeanne (2.25 liters) This is equal to three standard bottles, or one magnum and one bottle. Port producers often refer to this unique bottle as a Tregnum or Tappit Hen bottle. Jeroboam (3 liters, 4,750 ml bottles, Double Magnum) Jeroboam was the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel, after they split off from the rest of the kingdom following the death of Solomon. His name is often said to mean "may the people grow numerous," and he was a pagan who encouraged people to worship golden calves he had placed in the towns of Bethel and Dan rather than go to Jerusalem to worship. Because of this, he is known as the man who "made Israel to sin." Bottles of this size are reserved for still wines and on occasion are referred to as Double Magnums. Jeroboam/Rehoboam (4.5 to 5 liters, 6 to 6 1/3 750 ml bottles) Rehoboam was a son of Solomon who succeeded his father as king of Israel. Some advisers told him to be a good leader and take his people's thoughts into account. But Rehoboam, contrary to advice, instituted more taxes and tributes from the citizens of his kingdom. His personal wealth led to rebellions and the northern kingdom's split. Rehoboam bottles are for sparkling wines only. This size bottle that contains red wine is referred to as a Jeroboam. Imperial/Methuselah (6 liters, 8,750 ml bottles) Methuselah was the oldest man in the Bible, living to be 969. It's possible that whoever named this bottle of wine knew that a bottle this big would take a long time to age. When used to hold Bordeaux, this bottle size is known as Imperial. Salmanazar (9 liters, 2,750 ml bottles, one case) Salmanazar V (or, Shalmaneser) was an Assyrian king. In the Bible, known for his role in the last conquest of Israel, he deported many Israelites from the land, including the Ten Lost Tribes. 22 CLUB EXPERIENCE Balthazar (12 liters, 16,750 ml bottles) Most likely named for Belshazzar, a Babylonian king who, according to the book of Daniel, held a feast while his city was under siege. Belshazzar was a fan of wine and he had the vessels brought from the temple of Jerusalem so that he and all his guests could drink from them. This upset G-d who then produced the infamous writing on the wall that predicted the downfall of Babylon. The city fell that night and Belshazzar was killed in the struggle. There are also some who believe it is named after Balthazar, one of the three wise men that brought gifts of frankincense and myrrh to the Christ-child. Nebuchadnezzar (15 liters, 20,750 ml bottle) Nebuchadnezzar is credited with the construction of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon as well as with the destruction of Solomon's Temple. He is known for his premonitions and predicting his own downfall as well as his propensity to lose his sanity after bragging too much. Melchior/Solomon (18 liters, 24,740 ml bottles, two cases) Bottles of this size are quite rare. They're named for one of the Three Wise Men, who might have been the magi to give the baby Jesus gold. No word on why Gaspar, the third wise man, did not get a bottle named after him. Solomon (18 or 20 liters) Solomon was the king of Israel as well as the son of David. He is a prophet in both the Talmud and the Quran. He built the temple in Jerusalem, and was known for running his prosperous kingdom well. Reserved only for Champagnes, the size of this bottle is debated. Some sources give it as 18 liters, but others say it is 20 liters. Sovereign (25 Liters, 33.3 bottles) Reportedly, this 3-foot-tall bottle was created by Tattinger, a French wine family, for the launch of the Sovereign of the Seas in 1988. According to a 1987 story in The New York Times, "The Sovereign joins a class of oversize bottles introduced in France at the turn of the century during the belle époque." At the time, the ship was the biggest cruise liner in the world. Bottles this size and bigger are generally reserved for decoration, but Sovereign might be an exception. Goliath/Primat (27 liters, 36,750 ml bottles 3 cases) Goliath, of course, refers to the giant Philistine warrior that a young David had to face in the famous story from the Bible. David defeats the giant with a single stone and then decapitates him. Primat most likely comes from the Latin word for "first." This type of bottle is exceptionally rare and is most often referred to as Primat, but occasionally a company or individual will refer to it as Goliath, a fitting adjective since the bottles hold the equivalent of 36 standard bottles of wine. Melchizedek/Midas (30 liters, 40 bottles, only used for Champagnes) Melchizedek was a priest and the king of Salem in the Bible. His name means "my king is righteous." He is found in many religious texts as leading a perfect life, and some even see him as an extension of the Holy Spirit or Jesus himself. Midas is the name of many kings throughout history, but the specific one in question is probably the King Midas of Greek mythology. The story goes that the greedy king, when granted one wish, asked that he have the power of turning anything he touched into gold. As a result, Midas ended up turning even his own daughter into gold. As the king of all wine bottles, this size has rightfully earned its name and is extremely hard to find. CLUB EXPERIENCE 23 Longboat Key Club Moorings 24 CLUB EXPERIENCE A Florida Clean Marina “ “ Congratulations are in order for our beautiful Longboat Key Club Moorings! Our 291 slip marina has been recognized as a Florida Clean Marina for the 13th consecutive year. It is one of only 279 marinas in the State of Florida to carry this highly respected designation. Awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Florida Clean Marina designation is given to select marinas throughout the state that participate in a voluntary and proactive program that requires marina facilities to adhere to guidelines and best practices that support environmental stewardship. This accolade acknowledges that a marina has implemented a set of environmental measures designed to protect Florida’s waterways, including maintaining sensitive habitat, waste management, storm water control, spill prevention and emergency preparedness. Florida has over 1,350 miles of coastline, 50,000 miles of inland and coastal rivers and streams, over 700 freshwater springs and countless lakes. Floridians depend on water more than any other natural resource, and it is essential to the success of the state’s $56 billion tourism industry, its $14 billion marine industry and $6.6 billion fishing industry. As a major activity that contributes so much to Florida’s economy, boating and beautiful waterways are a way of life to Floridians and for those that choose to spend their vacation and leisure dollars in our destinations. It is important to support these state-wide initiatives and to encourage other boating enthusiasts to make the extra effort to support businesses that embrace this critical and forward thinking philosophy. The Club’s commitment to quality and excellence through the judicial business practices we have put in place for over a decade showcase the fact we take stewardship of our island resources very seriously. We work hard to maintain the integrity of our unique wildlife areas and waterways. The marina is a very special and beautiful addition to the amenities we offer at the Club, and it is yet another area in which our initiatives maintain a balance between good business practices and environmental sensitivities. Located at the Harbourside area of our property, Longboat Key Club Moorings is well known for its luxurious exclusivity, pristine setting, seabird rookeries and marine life. The marina, which is spread over 37 acres, can accommodate yachts up to 150 feet. It is located at ICW MM 79.5 by sea or at 2630 Harbourside Drive, Longboat Key, by land. The marina has been recognized by the Sarasota Herald Tribune as a finalist in its “Best Marina” category and by Power and Motoryacht magazine as one of the “Top 25 Marinas in North America.” - Sandra Rios, Director of Marketing and Communications CLUB EXPERIENCE 25 Introducing Longboat Key Club’s New International Tennis Ambassador JULIÁNALONSO We are honored to announce the newest addition to the outstanding professional team we have in place at The Tennis Gardens at Longboat Key Club. Julián Alonso has accepted our invitation to represent the Club and Resort as our International Tennis Ambassador. In this capacity, he will enhance our image and visibility to tennis enthusiasts around the globe as well as bringing key talent to the Club for specialty clinics and exhibition matches throughout the year. Julián is a former ATP Tour Champion and is currently the Spanish Davis Cup CoCaptain. We decided to interview Julian to get to know him a little better, I am sure you will enjoy getting to know him better as well! Sandra Rios, Director of Marketing and Communications sat with Julian for a short Q&A. 26 CLUB EXPERIENCE CLUB EXPERIENCE 27 Question: Most professional tennis players start training at an early age. How did you become involved with the game, and at what age? Julián: I got involved with the game when I started going to the local tennis club with my father. He used to play with his friends on the weekends and I watched them play and have fun. Soon after, I asked my Dad if I could take some lessons at the same club. I started taking lessons and playing for fun with other kids and since then I never stopped playing. I was 9 years old at that time. I could be considered a late starting tennis player. Question: Tennis is a sport that involves an extraordinary amount of discipline and dedication. What were some of the challenges, if any, you experienced during your career? Julián: I never felt I was experiencing big challenges because I completely loved the sport. I loved tennis since the first day I picked up a racket in my hands and even though tennis requires much dedication and sacrifice, I felt every practice and every loss was part of the process to become the kind of player I wanted to be. Question: Being on the international tennis scene is certainly exotic and a lifestyle many individuals dream about. What did you experience being in that spotlight? Julián: When you are inside the professional tennis world, the rhythm is hectic and you are completely immersed in your performances, your ATP points, your matches, your victories and your next travels. I really didn't think much about the rest. I think you see it completely different from the inside. I just wanted to win and have great results, other aspects were less significant for me. Question: Who was, or is, the most influential person in your tennis career? Julián: Two people. My Father and my Coach, Pato Alvarez. Without their help and dedication I would have never reached the level I reached in my tennis career. They taught me everything I know about tennis and they always gave me their support and unconditional love. I will always be thankful for that. Question: Being such an international sport, has politics or international pressures ever influenced or affected your performance or opportunities? 28 CLUB EXPERIENCE Julián: I would like to meet Ayrton Senna Julián: I never felt politics affected my performance or my opportunities, but I definitely felt pressure when playing in a foreign country on two occasions. One was at the Santiago de Chile ATP Tour, when I defeated Marcelo Rios in the finals. He was an idol in Chile and was ranked number 1 in the world at that time. You could feel the atmosphere was pretty tense. advantage of all the opportunities that come your way and enjoy every second on the tour, the time goes really fast. Eat wisely and take care of your body, it is your temple. Another occasion I felt a lot of pressure from the spectators was at the quarter finals of the Davis Cup in Brazil in 1998. It was not easy for the Spanish Team to perform and keep the concentration with all the clapping and whistles. At the end we won and it became overall a great experience. Julián: I would definitely eradicate any disease. Favorite Quote - “If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.” Favorite Color - Blue Favorite Food - My wife's chicken and Spanish omelet. Favorite Pet - A female boxer called Tigre who passed away 3 years ago. Song You Sing in the Shower - Any song from Enrique Iglesias Question: If you could go back in time and meet anyone in history, past or present, who would it be? Please welcome Julián, his wife Maria and son Julian to Longboat Key Club! Question: What was your favorite and most cherished win? Question: If you had the power to change any one thing in the world in the next day, what would it be? Julián: My favorite and most cherished win was against Goran Ivanisevic in 1998. The victory occurred at the Long Island ATP Tour event right before the U.S. Open. In that match I served the third fastest serve in the history of the tour. I owned that record for 10 years. Question: The sport of tennis has evolved over the past three decades and looking towards a younger generation of tennis enthusiasts, what would be your advice to them about playing the sport and the expectations they can realistically expect to attain? Julián: I would say to them, “Play a lot, enjoy and love the sport. It's an amazing sport which will give you plenty of values: discipline, capacity of sacrifice, structure, perseverance, respect for others and for yourself, self-esteem and competitiveness. In the end, tennis will make you a better person, so try as hard as you can, it's always worth it.” Question: What are three things that would surprise us about Julián Alonso? Julián: I am an extremely tidy person. I like everything very clean and always in order. Maybe I got it from spending so much time at hotels as a tennis player. I love spending time with older people. I like to listen and learn from their life experiences. They also give me a feeling of peace and serenity. I love racing and fast cars. I would love being an Formula 1 Race Driver. Question: Julián Alonso is writing a letter to his younger self. What does it say? Dear Julián, Be patient and keep working hard, the moment you are expecting will come. Listen to your family and your coach. Do not worry about the critics. Just show who you are and what you are capable of on the tennis court. Take CLUB EXPERIENCE 29 Hollywood! Great Tennis Moments From The Silver Screen Scene one, take two…action! There is a movie buff in all of us, but I wonder how many of you could name at least a few of the more memorable tennis movies or tennis scenes which have played on the silver screen? Whether just a quick cameo appearance by one of our beloved tennis superstars, a full-fledged, unceremoniously poor performance on the courts by some of Hollywood’s finest, or even the beginning of a classic romance, here are a few clips that will take you down memory lane! Strangers on a Train, 1951 “Starring Farley Granger” The master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, often included tennis references in his movies and in this 1951 classic hits a particularly brilliant note. In the midst of a match he gazes up towards the crowd and locks eyes with the one person not moving with the ocean of faces going left, right, left, right. Handsome visage morphs to pure anxiety as he knows he could become his next victim. Don don don don... Annie Hall, 1977 “Starring Diane Keeton and Woody Allen” One of the silver screens most famous romances blossoms between these two iconic film stars when they meet for a match at a local tennis club. Always the awkward and kitchy guy, Allen’s tennis racquet of course ends up in all the wrong places. Keaton agrees to drive him home and the rest is history! La Di Da. La Di Da! Classic! Players, 1979 “Starring Ali MacGraw Ali MacGraw, Dean Paul Martin and Steve Guttenberg get tangled up in a hot summer romance when Ali MacGraw is rescued by a young, up-and-coming tennis star, and then goes on to be his training “coach,” despite her engagement to another man. Classic! 30 CLUB EXPERIENCE CLUB EXPERIENCE 31 Bon Voyage Charlie Brown–And Don't Come Back! 1980 “Starring Snoopy” Who can forget Charlie Brown’s beloved and oh so famous dog Snoopy, after all his heroic actions as a decorated fighter pilot. And the original “happy” dancer, is a tennis obsessed canine who just can get enough spin on his ball or speed to his serve. He does however make it to Wimbledon in this animated classic. The Witches of Eastwick, 1987 “Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon” I am sure you remember this classic from the 80’s. Jack and his bevy of bewitching beauties play a rather risqué game of tennis, all in the hopes of attracting the attention of who else? Using all the magical powers they possess you see some unusual leg shots, Susan Sarandon aka “swimsuit model” and Michelle Pfeiffer rallying with her um–derrier. You get the picture! Legends of the Fall, 1994 “Starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and Aidan Quinn” Intolerable Cruelty, 2003 “Starring George Clooney, Catherine Zeta-Jones” A window into the not-so-serious side of Hollywood’s magic man, we bear witness to Clooney’s attempts to turn the tennis ball machine into a “partner,” and, of course, George Clooney in tennis whites. Enough said. Despite the film is not about tennis at all, far from actually, the charming, albeit small tennis scene truly captures the essence of what tennis is all about–sophistication and all things “civilized.” As a young couple home on the range surrounded by fields and prarie lands, they create a tennis court in the backyard to maintain their “civility” as well as sanity. Charming! A Room With a View, 1986 “Starring Helena Bonham Carter, Daniel Day-Lewis and Rupert Graves” Having agreed to a marriage to a boorish gentleman in order to put her latest Italian romance behind her, the tennis court is the setting for the taunts of her brother and future mother-in-law, declaring that Lucy simply cannot or will not ever live up to their expectations. Only to find out, her lost love is moving in next door. Oh oh... - Sandra Rios, Director of Marketing and Communications A Good Year, 2006 “Starring Russell Crowe, Marion Cotillard, Abbie Cornish and Albert Finney” Having inherited a deteriorating French vineyard complete with an unkept chateau and overgrown tennis court, Russell Crowe challenges his rival to a match, and the stakes are high! A portrait of two men, now devoid of their youthful prowess, challenging each other to the point of…well, exhaustion, among other things. 32 CLUB EXPERIENCE CLUB EXPERIENCE 33 Friday, November 20 - It’s a Tailgate Party Friday, December 18 - “South of the Border” 4:30 pm - 7 pm T.G.O.F. “Tennis Gardens on Friday” Congratulations on Fitness Level 3 Titleist Performance Institute Training Certification! My entry into the Personal Training profession came about different than most–a Design Engineer for the aerospace industry, Equine Dentist, avid polo player and golfer; I suddenly found myself in a medical evac helicopter due to a traumatic back injury. The rehab experience and my background in evaluating structure, mechanics and movement led me to a career as a Personal Trainer where I can share my expertise and serve as an example to others facing the rehabilitation challenge. “Your progress depends on your attitude, drive and support team.” My lifelong sports background provides extensive firsthand experience in the importance of overall and sport specific physical conditioning to perform at the highest levels. I enjoyed an 18 year career as a hockey player and coach, many years in the golf industry playing/teaching as well as several years playing polo, kyaking and paddleboarding. I believe the philosophy of the Titleist fitness approach applies to everyone regardless of their interest in golf. Mobility, flexibility, strength and stability are absolutely key to your body performing at its full potential. Limitations in those areas will hold you back no matter if you are an athlete, weekend warrior or a senior wanting to maintain a healthy, independent lifestyle. If you are looking for a trainer whose full time focus is personal training, motivating others to reach and exceed their fitness goals and someone to provide innovative fitness challenges that make your workout a rewarding experience–I look forward to working with you. Whether a sultry Samba, tempting Tango, thrilling Tap Dance or a laughterfilled Line Dance to a favorite country tune, dancing is unquestionably the most entertaining exercise on the planet. This season we will be getting you out on the dance floor to sharpen your smooth moves or to teach you some new ones. Many of the dances are group focused and when needed, we will pair you up with a perfect dance partner, so don’t be shy! Come one, come all and get your dancing shoes ready! First up is Ballroom Dancing! Always done in pairs, ballroom dancing is done both socially and competitively around the world. The general consensus is that there are five International Standard and five International Latin style dances that comprise the dance standards. The two styles differ in rhythm, technique and costume but they all include the basic elements of core control and cohesiveness. Calling all Hoofers! Get your tap shoes ready! For those of you that want a good workout while having lots of fun, Tap is the way to go! Tap has its roots in Irish Step Dance, English Clog Dancing and Juba Dance. There are two major variations of tap dance, one known as Jazz Tap (or Rhythm Tap) and the other is Broadway Tap. Practitioners of Jazz Tap consider themselves to be part of the “jazz” tradition. Embraced and embellished by enslaved African Americans, it was more entertaining and exciting than the original and more traditional dance. It included more arm and body movements and eventually paved the way for the show tap we enjoy on Broadway. 38 CLUB EXPERIENCE The Night The iconic sound of tap shoes is created by a metal “tap” that is adhered to the sole of the shoe. Soft–shoe does not require special shoes. Though not necessary to perform the dance movements, “taps” do create that thrilling rhythm when dancing. However, the rhythm of the dance, whether “tap” or soft-shoe, is generated not only by sound and sequence, but also by sliding and body movements. Giddy-Up! Cowboys and Cowgirls, your line-dance lesson is about to begin! A highly choreographed dance, line-dancing is a group or collective dance, performed in rows or lines not specific to gender. Collectively the group faces the same direction while simultaneously moving in-step in the same direction. Most commonly practiced in country-western bars and social clubs it is often combined with other country western dances such as the two-step and the western-promenade dances. Easily adaptable to any form of music, it is not uncommon to see a line dance performed in a disco club or even at weddings. The basic premise is that the line dancers move within a certain number of “walls”, which dictates the direction and performance of the dancers. Switching through a series of transitions, turning to face the next “wall” makes for a fun, interactive and skillful dance. Word of caution–practice makes perfect! Enjoy! - Sandra Rios, Director of Marketing and Communications Away! Be sure to sign up for the new Dance Class Series.
