COMMODORE’S REPORT
Carl Goodwin
commodore@armdaleyachtclub.ns.ca
We have been busy working on a number of fronts in
concert with our commitment as a COM to implement
the changes demanded by a majority of Members at a
Special Meeting last September 10.
Early on it became clearly evident what had to be
done, and done quickly. That has been the challenge
over the past few months and many of us have been
responding through inordinate time consuming efforts
to “turn the ship around”. I feel it is happening but
there is much left to do – with your help as Members.
Our Club must operate effectively on two fronts: Marine Services and Recreation. Our main business line is
Marine Services. We have therefore, hired a working
Manager to focus on delivering top notch marine services to members and visitors alike. These are clearly
staff functions for which we pay.
Changes have been made in the Club Office to increase
accessibility e.g. increased hours of operation; reduced
bureaucracy, improved communications (e.g. a voice
on the phone as a first response), and an ongoing initiative to automate processes. There emerged an urgent need to strengthen our management and control
of finances in these tight economic times and to implement cost saving measures in all areas of Club operations.
The office is tasked with providing support services
primarily to Club operations and to a lesser degree our
Recreational Programs, which is where “volunteers”
should focus their efforts such as running our Sailing,
Cruising and Sail Training Programs in addition to the
various activities that support AYC’s yachting activities.
Thanks to those who have already responded to the
call. Your work is invaluable.
Our Insurance project led by Sarah Jane Raine is complete and will be ready for implementation June 1.
Sarah Jane also Chairs the Food & Beverage Committee and are working closely with the Caterer (J&D
Fine Foods - Jim Gill) to enhance your dining pleasure
at AYC. There have been a few glitches e.g. spots in
service that need improvement, but overall I think
they are serving us well and are more than willing to
co-operate with the Committee to rectify deficiencies
and improve areas that need attention. They have
also been willing partners in carrying out AYC sponsored events.
I’m comfortable that the Marine
Services business line and Office
support function is on the mend.
I do not have the same level of
confidence with our commitment to promoting, supporting and participating in the Yachting or recreational function. Are we going to become a commercial
marina or are we going to be a Yacht Club fully embracing the principles upon which the Armdale Yacht
Club was founded? The signs are there that we want
to return to our “former glory” with our fleet of sails
and robust cruising activities – can we do it? Yes we
can!

REPORT FROM THE VICE COMMODORE
Norman Raine
vicecommodore@armdaleyachtcub.ns.ca
We now have a new Yard office for Steven Clements, Marine Service Manager,
which is located next to the fuel tanks
in between the fuel dock and slip way.
The Yard, under the direction of the Steven Clements
along with Jim Harris and two casual employees, have
been busy getting ready for spring launch. They have
already launched several boats and if we ever get
some good weather will be busy with many more.
The marinas are all hooked up with water and electricity. We will be doing repairs that are required on
three walkways. The sweep chains and anchors have
been checked and we are in the process of having
Connors Diving install some new anchors and replacing the sweep chain as necessary.
There has been a new cable installed on the carriage
as well as new cable on the mast crane. The winch on
the mast crane has been turned around so that a person is not under a mast being raised.
We have adjusted the procedure for new membership
applications with two sponsors. After posting for seven days on the bulletin board an e-vote is taken by
the COM and upon the results the application is processed. This allows for a more efficient and quicker
process for a new member. Those who do not have
sponsor still have to go through an interview with two
members from the Membership Committee and then
processed.

ARMDALE YACHT CLUB at the HALIFAX INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW
FEBRUARY 20—23
The Halifax Boat Show attracted a huge crowd, and AYC was pleased to receive many visitors at our display table.
This was a good opportunity to showcase AYC. In addition to sharing information about our Club, we had brochures and material for our visitors to take along with them. Thanks to all who visited us in the Prospect Room.
AYC members can support this endeavour simply by informing potential new members that we have marinas
and moorings available, and we welcome new members in any and all of our membership categories!

VALENTINE’S DAY
DINNER & DANCE
FEBRUARY 14
ENTERTAINMENT CHAIR REPORT
Terry Hill
entertainment@armdaleyachtclub.ns.ca
We had a delicious dinner
prepared by our Caterer and a
great band for the Valentine’s Day
Dinner and Dance; however, the
turnout for this event was disappointing. I guess
we are short on romantics at AYC. Things certainly changed for the better on St. Paddy’s Day.
Metro played to a full house and every one had a
wonderful time.

More recently, Anna Chow, aided by countless
volunteers, hosted a benefit in support of Junior
Sailing which raised a goodly sum of money to
boost the program. The place was packed, the
food was delicious and the band “Shaker” kept
everybody dancing all night. For the Opening
Regatta we welcomed, for the first time at AYC,
the “George Carter Junior Band”.
That's about it for now. Keep an eye the eNews

Club.

The Chapel is still up at the top end.
We used to store small sailboats in it over the winter but later members like Dave Sadler started building
boats in it.
The wall is still around the cellblock.
Three of the four cigarettes I smoked in my life were smoked behind that wall.
What is now the cradle yard was a Lions or Kinsmen playground for the neighborhood children with washrooms, swings and a storage shed in the trees. The open area was used for baseball and football. The shore
was a beach for swimming with a lifeguard in summer. Junior member Fred Goode was one of the lifeguard/
supervisors.

and Mary Dunphy
family all amounted
to
more
than
$4,000.00 being donated to AYC’s Sail

Rear Commodore Jeff Nelson, presented Anna with a
bouquet of roses in appreciation for leading this very
successful fundraiser.
The remarkable volunteer support, partnering with
our Caterer, engagement of the dance band
“Shaker”, as well as the huge participation by members and their guests were a perfect mix for this very

After all was said and done, Anna summed it up
quite nicely...“It gives me gives me a warm feeling
to know that the Club I love has the energy and
talent within it to come together and defeat any
adversity that faces it. I hope that as a group we
have more opportunities to use our collective talents to build AYC into the organization that we all
know it can become!”
And to quote Gloria Connors in a message sent to
Anna, “We want to thank you for your enormous
efforts undertaking this fund raising event. The
work you did was over the top plus you enabled
the rest of us to help as well. Actually everyone
who attended was there because they wanted to
be part of the event, the spirit of sailing and AYC.
A great time was had by all.”

GETTING RID OF MOLD & MILDEW ON BOARD
It’s that time of year again when shrink-wrap covers are
coming off our vessels and we’re eagerly preparing for a
new boating season. Unfortunately, for some there’s an
unpleasant discovery of an effect left by the long, cold,
damp winter—an all too common problem of mildew
stains. The article referenced below may be an interesting and helpful read as it reveals “...results of testing
14 mildew stain removers, offers tips for preventing
onboard mildew, and gives some advice on the proper
care and cleaning of sails—Dacron, Kevlar, and nylon—to
keep them mildew-free”.
For this test, it turns out the favorite bleach-free cleaner
is Spray Nine. For a mildew problem that requires
bleach, Klean-Strip is recommended. Their best environmentally friendly choice is the Thetford.

AYC DINING & BAR
Jim Gill, JD Fine Foods and Catering Limited
catering@armdaleyachtcub.ns.ca
Operating Hours & Menu
Boating season is here and the AYC Dining Room &
Bar are now operating under our summer schedule.
See page 19 for AYC Hours, effective May 19 to October 12, 2014.
Wednesday Night is Race Night
On Wednesday nights at AYC, the Dining Room is
open & serving our Full Menu. Not in the race? Why
not come out and watch the race start while enjoying
a meal overlooking the beautiful Northwest Arm.
We’re always working to improve our menu. We’ve
made some minor changes and added a few new
menu items. We’ve added a Spicy Black Bean Veggie
Burger to provide another vegetarian option. The Stir
fry, Chipotle Burger and Haddock au gratin are also
new. We’ll soon be starting a Friday night dinner special so be sure to keep an eye on the eNews and website for updates.
Club Activities
We continue to work with the Club to support Club
sponsored events. In May we provided a Continental
Breakfast and an afternoon BBQ for the Ice Breaker
Race and operated the Bar & Dining Room for extended hours during the Opening Regatta Weekend. In
April we were happy to open the kitchen to Anna
Chow and her crew of volunteers for the Chinese
Buffet in support of the AYC Sail Training Program.
F&B Operations
We’re pleased with the support we’ve received from
many members; there are a lot of faces that we see in
the clubhouse on a regular basis. However, close to
40% of membership has yet to utilize any of their
F&B credits in 2014. If you’re in that 40%, I encourage
you to come up to the Clubhouse and check out the
facilities. During the summer, Thursday nights are
usually quiet and great for a relaxed night out; if
you’re looking for something more upbeat, you won’t
want to miss the Friday night Kitchen Party. Remember, your F&B credit is use it or lose it; any credit remaining in your account at the end of the year is forfeit.
We recently met with the Food and Beverage
12
Committee (Chaired by Sarah-Jane Raine) to discuss
some issues of concern and how to improve the services we provide
to the Club. Menu pricing and Saturday food service were two areas of interest.
When JD Fine Foods and Catering Limited took over the
food & beverage operation at AYC, we expressed our
desire to provide a self-sustaining operation. We constantly monitor the cost of food & alcohol, labour and
overhead (such as propane, waste management, insurance, paper products, cleaning products, fuel, wear &
tear on vehicles, credit/debit card processing fees,
cooking oil, draught gas, and many other factors). We
monitor menu pricing of other establishments in the
Halifax area market and feel our pricing is competitive
and reflects the reality of the operating costs. We believe the F&B operation at AYC can be financially feasible, but only at market prices.
We’ve been approached about opening the dining
room on Saturdays. This has been tried at AYC before
with very little success. During the previous six summers in which the dining room was open on Saturday,
four operated at a loss, one barely broke even and one
was marginally profitable. This year, we opened the
dining room for two Saturdays – the Ice Breaker and
the Opening Regatta. The Ice Breaker was a money
losing day. The Opening Regatta Saturday brunch did
have a reasonable turnout; but, Sunday’s brunch sales
were below average. The overall effect during Opening
Regatta Weekend was a marginal increase in total
brunch sales; but, this was more than offset by the increase in labour costs. Sadly, the numbers just aren’t
there to support opening the dining room on Saturdays.
Contacting Us & Feedback
As always, we’re interested in your feedback which
helps us to make decisions on various aspects of the
food & beverage operation. We’ve setup an online
comment card at http://comments.aycdining.ca
where you can provide feedback right from your smart
phone or home computer.

At the commencement of the prize presentations, a
Burgee from the Bradenton Yacht Club in Florida was
presented to Vice Commodore Norman Raine
(standing in for Commodore Carl Goodwin) by Communications Chair, Mary Keddy, acting on behalf of
Past Commodore Paul Barr. Paul winters in Florida,
and he told Mary how he acquired the Burgee. In
Paul’s words, “...The Bradenton Yacht Club agreed to
be the venue for one of our winter Canada days.
That's when we gather up as many Canadians we can
find in our community and invite our American neighbours to lunch. Short version is we sing anthems and
thank everyone for being such great hosts (usually a
few glasses of wine thrown in for good measure). I
happened to have a Burgee from AYC in my car and
presented it to our hosts. They were quite thrilled and
gave one to me to take back to our Club. I gave them
a little history talk on AYC along with web site information. Those I saw go on line seemed quite impressed. I heard a lot of "beautiful" and it appears we
have a healthy wow factor. Our Burgee hangs in their
Wardroom. I'm very proud of our Club and the people who make it such a very special place. It's an easy
sell. Give it a try in your travels, even if it's just down
town.” Sage advice! So let’s all do our part in promoting AYC to attract new members!

The usual suspects, Left to right...
Janet MacInnes owns BANDIT and races every
Wednesday & Saturday all season as well as sailing her
boat down the shore with her son every summer. Barrie MacLeod sold SKYE BOAT last September
but sailed it about 70 times a summer over the last 29
years to Prospect, Mahone Bay and LaHave. Peter
Mowat owns a motor boat here and just retired as
Captain of a huge drill ship checking the shifting plates
off the west coast of North America. Mark Gammon,
Marine Engineer and skipper of MERLIN at
AYC. Gerard Dunphy, owns oil rig supply vessels and
other marine interests as well as the motor yacht ROMANCE OF THE SEAS at AYC. Robert Sanford owns
the sailing yacht, AZURA, and skippered it up here
from the US East Coast a couple of years ago. Patrice
LaPierre is a Marine Engineer and has been a great
help to many boaters at the Club. Mark MacNeil has
two sailboats at AYC and has sailed both of them
across the Atlantic. A year ago Mark and his daughter
sailed up into the Arctic. Normally there, would be Rob
Gordon who has owned a string of sail/power boats at
the club and the Fawcett twins who were down sailing
in the Caribbean.
On Sunday, 4 May
2014, Lloyd Blagdon is close inshore off Point Pleasant Park on his yacht MORNING GLORY for Battle Of
The Atlantic Sunday ceremonies honoring the Navy
and Merchant Mariners who gave their lives getting
supplies across the Atlantic in WW II. When Lloyd was
made Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy
he was the youngest person to achieve that rank at
the time.

Sail Nova Scotia is presently working on a new strategic plan, and is interested in receiving any input, particularly from power boaters, who may have suggestions for what they can do on their behalf.
*In November 2013, membership of the NSYA voted
in favour of changing its name to Sail Nova Scotia for
two reasons, namely: to come into line with the national organization, CYA, which changed its name to
Sail Canada the year before. As well, NS was the only
provincial association with yachting in its name. The
others had all switched to sail or sailing; and it was
felt that the word yachting was an outdated term,
implying wealth, elitism, etc. As well, it is not often
anymore that one says they are going 'yachting".
They more often than not go for a sail or boat ride.
