created the Musagetes Fund to support
arts and culture in Guelph and area.
The donation of $650,000 will endow
a donor-advised fund. First grants will

A “healthy choice” for a
generous company
Valcom Manufacturing Group Inc. employs
85 people at its Guelph plant. A world
leader in the design, manufacture and
supply of fiberglass whip antennae, it is
also the centre of excellence for free standing AM/FM Fiberglass Broadcasting Antenna Towers.
The company donated $100,000 in the name of their employees through the establishment of
the Valcom Employees Guelph Health Centres Benefit Fund at The Guelph Community
Foundation. The annual income from this fund is to be allocated equally between Guelph
General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
President Paul MacPherson explains,“When Valcom employees walk into our hospital, I want
them to be proud to know that their company contributes significantly to the needs of the
hospital as a tribute to the work they do for us. What’s even better, their children will know,
and their children’s children too because the fund is established in perpetuity.”
”I feel strongly that more business leaders need to get behind the concept of The Guelph
Community Foundation because it allows them to leave their mark on the community forever
in areas of their specific interest. All companies, large and small, have the ability to make this
choice because the options offered by The Foundation are so diverse.”

W
hat began as a seed of an idea just five years ago now contributes significantly to our
community. The Legacy has begun! There is no doubt that 2004 was an exceptional year for
The Foundation and for the Guelph area.
Our donors are people from all walks of life who share a common dream involving the future
prosperity and well-being of our community. Knowing that financial resources will always
be necessary, they create endowment funds to generate annual income in perpetuity.
The legacy of their generosity is beginning to deliver grants that support our community.
We are pleased to present our 2004 Annual Report to the Community. The Foundation’s
grants in 2004 surpassed $33,000 to 21 charitable organizations and scholarship recipients,
bringing our total grants to over $160,000.
Our funds continue to grow - an increase of over 130% for a total of $1.48 million in
endowments. It takes many shapes – time, talent and money – but in all cases, it reflects a
caring relationship. We are sincerely thankful for the trust and confidence of our donors.
We join our colleagues in 146 community foundations across Canada in experiencing this
growth. In 2004, donors made a record-breaking $210 million in gifts to local community
foundations. This has pushed the total Canadian assets over $2 billion – making community
foundations one of the largest grant makers in the country. Last year, $95 million was
contributed from community foundations to thousands of charities all across the country.
Looking forward, our community has been blessed by so many who have given so much
not only to The Foundation, but to our charitable sector as a whole. We will continue to
work to promote philanthropy with individuals, our corporate sector and with our trusted
professional advisors. We are excited about the growth of our granting program, the greater
awareness of The Foundation among Guelph area citizens and announcing our first
‘arts and culture’ grants to be dispersed in 2005.
Together we have built a Foundation that offers every citizen, regardless of their financial
status, the ability to create their own legacy. It offers organizations opportunities to build
their own resources and have as much involvement as they choose.
To our Board, Committees Members, Volunteers, Donors and Friends, The Guelph Community
Foundation extends its appreciation for your ongoing commitment. We look forward to
working with you to continue to build our vibrant and growing community.
