Most of us are familiar with the bible story of Jonah and the whale, part of which we hear in today’s first reading. Many people have spent a lot of time wondering how a whale could have swallowed
Jonah and then spit him out on land. Trying to figure out how a whale could do this is really a waste of
time for this event was never meant to be taken literally. The Book of Jonah – and if you have a bible at
home, you should take time to read the whole story because it is only a couple pages long, four chapters
in all – is one of the grandest, as some bible scholars put it, parables in the Sacred Scriptures. That is
correct, it is a parable, a fictional story written to help us understand the mystery of our God and God’s
willingness to practice mercy and forgiveness.
Nineveh, the city Jonah was sent to by God, had been the capital of Assyria, a kingdom that
ruled the world at that time. Assyria’s warriors were fierce, destroying everyone and everything in its
path. Thousands died in Assyria’s attempt to conquer Israel, the home of the Chosen People of God.
Nineveh, the capital city, came to be the most evil city the world had ever known.
The Jewish people were greatly prejudiced towards outsiders, non-Jews. It was with this in
mind that this book was written. In this parable, God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, this terrible city that
represented evil and cruelty. God told Jonah to call the people to repent. This book presented a great
challenge for its listeners. They found it hard to believe that God would invite anyone outside of Israel
to faith, let alone these most evil and brutal oppressors, the outsiders.
Still, God sent a prophet to Nineveh, Then, to top it off, God forgives the people. Most of, if not
all of the Jewish people of that time, would not have liked the ending of the story. They, like Jonah,
would have preferred that Nineveh would be completely destroyed along with all its evil inhabitants.
Instead, they are told by God to be merciful and forgiving.
In the world we live in, we hear and read stories every day about people who seek revenge and
retribution. God calls for mercy and forgiveness.
By the way, the bible says nothing about a whale. In almost every translation you find, all we
hear is that a big fish swallowed Jonah. Go back to Genesis, the first bible book. It says nothing about
Adam and Eve eating an apple. And when you read the dramatic call of Saul being called by God to
stop persecuting Christians, there is nothing about his falling off a horse. All these things and many
more have been added by us. The details like that are not what is most important. What matters is that
we take God’s words to heart and practice openness, mercy, forgiveness, understanding with all God’s
creation. After all, we do believe that we are all children of one good, loving, forgiving, merciful God.
That’s what should make the story of Jonah so attractive to us. He did not want to walk into the
heart of evil and challenge it. He wanted to run away from God. You can understand that. It’s a normal
human reaction. God has a different idea of what “normal” should be.

NEXT SUNDAY - FEBRUARY 1, 2015
On the first Sunday of each month, St.
Fabian Parish offers a blessing for expectant
mothers, fathers and their unborn children, immediately following the 9:30 a.m. Mass. We’ll meet in
the Chapel. The blessing is given to strengthen
mothers & fathers during the time of waiting and to
pray for the health and safe delivery of their child.
This blessing may be received monthly throughout

Third Week of Ordinary Time
Daily Prayer This Week:
Sunday is the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The
readings include the wonderful story from Mark's
Gospel repeated from last week's weekday readings:
Jesus calls Simon, Andrew, James and John. “Come
after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
This week is set at the beginning of Jesus' ministry and
the pictures we get of how challenged and pushed he is,
help prepare us to hear the simple parables he tells us.
All of us get challenged and pushed in our daily lives.
Even when we are on the right road and following a
faithful path, there are forces, conflicting demands,
tempting alternatives, differing values that batter us. It
takes grace and courage to trust our real mission and
that our Lord will be with us through it all.
Monday is the Memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus,
Bishops. Wednesday is the Memorial of Saint Thomas
Aquinas, Priest and Doctor of the Church. Saturday
is the Memorial of Saint John Bosco, Priest.
The first reading this week continues with the Letter to
the Hebrews which teaches that Jesus is mediator of a
new covenant and a priest who “offered one sacrifice
for sins. He took his seat forever at the right hand of
God.”
In Mark's Gospel this week, the ever-critical scribes
accuse Jesus of being possessed by demons. Jesus responds clearly, “If a house is divided against itself, that
house will not be able to stand.” When told his family
has arrived to see him, he replies that “whoever does the
will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” He
tells the imaginative story of the sower and the seed and
after the crowd dispersed, Jesus explains to the disciples
that the seed is the word of God, accepted at various
levels. He encourages his disciples to show their light:
“Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket
or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand?”
Jesus compares the Kingdom with the tiniest of mustard
seeds which grow to “the largest of plants.” He calms
the seas during a storm. His disciples wonder, “Who
then is this whom even wind and sea obey?”
On the Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time Mark's
Gospel brings us the story of Jesus driving out unclean
spirits from a man in the synagogue. The people are
impressed because he taught with authority in ways the
scribes did not and they marveled that even the unclean
spirits obey him.

Each morning this week, we can take a moment, to ask
for what we desire. The entire day will be different just
by spending 20 seconds sitting at the edge of the bed
saying, “Lord, I want to keep my eyes open today.
Whatever comes at me today, I want to stay in touch
with you. Thank you.” Another morning I may be aware
of a big decision I have to execute that day or a conflict
I am planning to face, and I might pray, “Okay, Lord,
this is the day. This is how I live out my relationship
with you. Be with me and give me what I need. Keep
reminding me I can't do it without you.”
Each day will offer a different brief moment of connection with our Lord, but each will ground the day. Then it
is so very easy, while in the shower or walking down a
hall, for just brief moments here and there in the background of our day, to stay in touch with our Lord. These
guides can help keep us focused on the nourishing Word
which interacts with our daily life. Every day can seem
like a living Parable of the Sower. There is seed being
scattered all around us and we can see and experience
our degrees of receptivity. And while we are doing the
best we can, all day, every day, in a variety of things,
we can be consoled by the Lord's smile reminding us
that the Kingdom is like a mustard seed. The real graces
come from very small seeds, the smallest of efforts that
make a big difference. Most of all, when things get
rough, during any day, we can
pause and take a breath and
ask him to calm the wind and
sea in our hearts.
Every night we can thank him
for his presence and ground
our growing relationship with
him.

Sacred Heart Church hosts special screening of
“INK 180”
In the beginning of the documentary, Chris Baker describes
his ministry saying, “I love tattoos, but some tattoos just
shouldn't exist in this world.” Every day, Baker faces the
reality of local gang violence and human trafficking recorded
in the tattoo markings of customers brought to him through
the FBI and Department of Homeland Security. The documentary INK 180, named after Baker’s INK 180 ministry,
follows the emotional and financial challenges he faces, as
well as the stories of his clients as he eliminates the painful
and sometimes life-threatening reminders of their pasts.
The screening will take place at Sacred Heart Parish’s
Ministry Center Gym located at 8245 W. 111th St., Palos
Hills, IL, 60465. Attendees are requested to RSVP at (630)
801 3676 or events@tln.com. Reservations are also being
taken at droel@sacredheartpalos.org. The screening is open
to all ages but, may not be appropriate for those under 14
years of age. There is no cost to attend this event; it is free.

Deacon Charlie’s Corner
Hi! Just think in less than two months it
will be Spring! We must think positive,
right?
As many of you know my health
situation, my memory is declining more
and more, unfortunately I can’t do anything about it. That being said, I’ll be cutting
down my article in half and I hope it can
remain that way for a good while (time will
tell!). Next weekend it will be a brand new
month, February. God is good, He is!
In our Gospel from Mark this week, Jesus
came proclaiming the words of the Gospel,
“The Kingdom of
God is at hand.”
Now what did He
mean by that? Here
is how I look at it.
Jesus set the
example before us
to show us how to
live. The question is how are we living according to the Gospel? As Jesus said, “Love
one another as I have loved you.” Jesus gave
His life for each of us so we could gain
eternal life. He doesn’t expect that from us,
but what He does expect is that we treat all
people with respect and understanding.
