Since 1905, the finest in ship modeling…
anywhere!
Welcome
Dear Friends,
Please allow Suzi, BJ’s motley crew,
Shantey and me to welcome our many,
many old friends with whom we have
had the pleasure of doing business for
all of these years.
To those of you who are new
to BlueJacket, we look forward to
getting to know you and becoming a
knowledgeable, trusted source for all
things pertaining to model ships.
Our
founder,
Mr.
Horace
Boucher started in business in
1905, as the model maker for the
US Navy. From solely building
custom models in the very early years,
a concept was born to mass produce
cast metal fittings so that the art of
a very few, very talented craftsmen
became accessible to anyone with the
desire to build a wooden ship model,
producing their own work of art.
Over the course of our 100+
continuous years in business, we have
created a great many different kits. In
this catalog, you will find model kits
that are appropriate for skill levels
ranging between those designed for
people who have never built a wooden
model to multi-year projects for expert
modelers. The ship models range
from simple dory’s to clipper ships,
from lobster boats to guided missile
destroyers. Each of our model kits is
coded as to skill level and the features
of that particular model.
BlueJacket does many other things
pertaining to model ships. We
continue our tradition of casting
model ship fittings and parts, building
custom models, restoring/repairing
damaged or antique models, building
custom sized model cases, providing
custom laser work, brass nameplates,
decals, etc, etc.
We’re still having fun, so that with hard
work, the support of our loyal customer
base, the energy of our staff, and a little
bit of luck, we’ll be around into the
foreseeable future.

To aid in your selection, all of our kits are divided into Ensign, Captain,
or Admiral experience levels. The Ensign kits are appropriate for modelers
with little or no experience, while the Admiral models are suitable only for the
most experienced modelers. Each of these levels are further subdivided into
thirds. Of course these ratings are highly subjective, but they are based upon
years of experience and feedback from many modelers. If you have a question,
by all means please contact us.

Handsome, seaworthy boats such as the Yankee Hero met the need
to transport sardines to the processing plants in eastern Maine.
YANKEE HERO was an actual boat whose model is in the National
Watercraft Collection of the Smithsonian. She is typical of a type of
craft known both as a “ ‘Quoddy boat” or an “Eastport pinky”. With
this kit, anyone with the desire can learn to craft a fine wooden ship
model. This kit provides absolutely everything needed to complete a
fine wood ship model…in one box! YANKEE HERO makes a great

beautiful lines and a distinctive color scheme make RED BARON

57.8 mph in the 2000 Maine lobster boat races. Best of all, you don’t
need to be an expert modeler to create a miniature of this famous

This small steamer tug model is perfect for the less experienced
modeler. She represents the state of the art in kit manufacturingcarved basswood hull, photo-etched brass pilothouse and deck
plates, Britannia ventilators and propeller. LACKAWANNA worked
the East Coast, pulling barges of coal from Pennsylvania to the
industrial centers of the northeast and south. She was painted white
to show off the clean burning qualities of the hard anthracite coal she
burned. Her yacht-like appearance made her stand out amongst her
fellow workboats.

Before the era of modern aids to navigation, lightships played a crucial
role as beacons and waypoints. Specifically designed for her lonely,
rugged post sixty miles offshore, on the edge of Nantucket Shoals,
LV 112 was built in 1936 and stationed to mark the beginning of the major
ship channel into New York Harbor. Our kit shows NANTUCKET as
launched, with a tall stack for her steam boiler, which was changed in
1960 when she was converted to diesel. This is a dramatic, colorful

Restorations
& REPAIRS
BlueJacket is very happy to offer the services
of our expert Yankee shipcrafters for the
purpose of cleaning, repairing, and/or restoring
your very precious model. Whenever we undertake
a repair or restoration, we do so with the intent of
preserving the integrity of the model, retaining as
much of the work and techniques of the original
builder as is possible. Your model really will be
handled with tender, loving care.
While having the opportunity to examine a model
is always preferable, if distance or logistics make
it impractical, a reasonably accurate estimate
can be arrived at by means of photographs and
conversations. Please contact BlueJacket to discuss
your requirements.
A major part of the reason why models have
reached the “before” stage in these photos is
because they were not properly protected by
a glass case. While a model is being restored is
the perfect opportunity for BlueJacket to build a
custom case, to protect and enhance your model.

“Thank you so much for the quick and efficient repair of our model. I just wanted to
say, from one boat builder to another, job well done! The final outcome is well
worth the expense. I appreciate the care you took, not only in keeping with the models’
unique style, but the packaging to get it safely back home.” Mr. J.L., St. Augustine, FL

They worked as much as 30 miles offshore in shallow waters with

Half Hulls
KitsH A L F - H U L L S
For that special
P O presentation
W E R
V E S S E
HALF-HULLS were originally used by shipwrights to develop the
lines of a full-sized vessel, prior to construction. Typically, a series of
wooden planks (lifts) representing various heights above and below
the waterline were assembled, and then carved to the desired shape.
Once the designer was satisfied with the shape of the hull, shipwrights
converted the final shape to the lines of the actual vessel through a
process called lofting. Eventually, this process was largely replaced
by drafted plans, but half-hulls continue to be used in traditional boat
building. For example, the famous racing lobsterboat RED BARON,
was lofted from a half-hull. BlueJacket, in turn, used this same half-hull
to develop the plans from which its kit of the RED BARON was created.
bowsprits, hatches, ports etc. Even unique name graphics can be
added on the side of the hull.
BlueJacket is often asked to incorporate half-hulls as part of
commemorative or presentation awards, as well as both perpetual
or individual trophies. Typically, the name of the award is engraved
upon a large brass plaque. The half-hull is mounted either at the top
of the award or under the name plaque. For a perpetual trophy, there
are usually a number of smaller brass plaques to be engraved at a
later date with the names of the awardees.
Please contact BlueJacket to discuss a half-hull model of your boat,
any vessel that has meaning to you, or for that very special trophy
or presentation.
BlueJacket Shipcrafters offers both custom built half-hulls and kits.
Our custom half-hulls can have a traditional clear (also known as
“bright”) finish or can be fully painted, and are individually hand
carved. A clear finished half-hull model can be constructed utilizing
your choice of decorative woods. Frequently, alternating layers of different woods are used to show the lifts, or contrasting woods are used
for the area above and below the waterline, all with a satin finished
backboard designed to complement your model.
In response to many requests, BlueJacket has created half-hull kits
that teach the modeler how to build in the traditional hand-carved
“lift method”. All half hull kits contain pre-cut lifts, a chamfered solid
backboard, brass nameplate, plans, and illustrated instruction booklet.
The modeler learns to glue the lifts, carve and sand them to conform
to the true hull shape, finish the model and backboard, and assemble
the completed model.
Painted models, using either flat or gloss paint (as appropriate),
can be provided with details such as deck hardware, cabins, masts,

The JACOB PIKE is an 83’ Maine sardine carrier – one of the last of a
dying breed. During the 20th century, these long, graceful vessels roamed
Penobscot Bay bringing the fisherman’s catch to the sardine canneries.

V E S S E L S
A ship model is a valuable work of art,
deserving of care and protection. BlueJacket is
proud to provide fine custom built cases and
“case kits” that will both complement and protect
your model.
All of our cases are provided with native
American cherry bases. The frames are supplied
in your choice of either chamfered cherry wood
or 1/4” brass.
Our completed cases are supplied with 1/8”plate
glass and the wood on our completed cases is
hand rubbed with a fine oil finish.
Because our cases and “case kits” are
custom manufactured to your specified
dimensions, payment in full is required at the
time of order. Please allow ten weeks for case
completion. Also, please note that special
shipping/handling charges apply.
As a case size guide, while it is highly
subjective, we normally suggest that the case size
be 4” longer than the total length of the model,
3” wider, and 2” taller. The size of the case is
an aesthetic judgement and is ultimately the
decision of the model owner. That is why we build
cases in your specified size. Please note that all
sizes discussed/written are interior dimensions,
whether stated or not.
BlueJacket’s “case kits” are offered to help
offset the extremely costly shipping fees
associated with completed cases. A “case
kit” consists of a cherry base, your choice of
either brass or cherry frames, and assembly
instructions. All supplied wood in a “case kit”
is finish sanded, but it is not finished. The bases
are routed to accept 1/8” glass. Please
note that glass is not included in a
kit. Many of our case kit
customers take the kit
to a local glazier and
request that he supply the
appropriate glass and
assemble the case.
In the event that you wish to order a “case
kit”, please refer to BlueJacket’s price list for
costing information. In the event that you wish
a completed case, please contact BlueJacket for a
prompt price quotation.
Due to their custom sizes, BlueJacket is not able
to offer refunds on cases or case kits. An adult
signature is required upon receipt of a
shipment.
Pedestals
Cherry Baseboards

long screw (supplied) which passes through base into hull.

Our alloy...
1. is environmentally friendly
2. has none of the safety concerns
associated with lead
3. will look as good in 100 years as it does today! Over time, lead
fittings may oxidize and end up
nothing more than white powder

STYRENE
Our styrene strips are precisely formed
and flexible. Use them for moldings,
wales, or rail parts—wherever narrow
strips of wood could be a problem
and you risk rounding sharp edges
with sandpaper.14” lengths, white only,

PAINT - ENAMEL
by FLOQUIL™ and MODEL MASTER™
Flat colors made specially for the model
builder. Airbrushable, plastic-compatible
—the perfect finish for Static and R/C
Ship Models.
Note that while Floquil paints are designated
Railroad Colors, we have selected shades
that are appropriate for our ship models.
MODEL MASTER paints were designed for
military vehicle and aircraft models. Again,
we have selected the correct
colors for our kits.

TIPS ON
PAINTING PEWTER
First, dip the part in a
saucer of acetone or
lacquer thinner to remove
any skin oils; then dip it
in thinned paint, shake
to remove droplets, and
let dry. Repeat if needed;
two thinned coats of paint
will not hide the details
as much as a single thick
coat.
Blocks were usually
oil-treated
to
resist
weathering, so dark brown
is a good choice; deadeyes and hearts were
protected with tar, so
make them black. Blocks
and deadeyes can be
strung on a fine wire for
dipping and for drying. Our
fittings may be blackened
with Pewter Black solution (PN0051), which tones
the metal itself, leaving
maximum detail.

CASES, PEDESTALS & BASEBOARDS
DISPLAY CASES
A ship model is a valuable work of
art, deserving of care and protection.
BlueJacket is proud to provide fine custom
built cases and “case-kits” that will both
complement and protect your model.
All of our cases are provided with native
American cherry bases. The frames are
supplied in your choice of either cherry or
1/4” brass.
Our completed cases are supplied
with 1/8” glass and the wood on our
completed cases is hand rubbed with
a fine oil finish. On special order, and at
addtional cost, other woods, finishes, and/or
plexi-glass is available.
PEDESTALS
Machined brass, slotted to accept keel and
drilled for a long screw (supplied) which
passes through base into hull.
dimensions. This sum is termed the “unit
inches”. The cost of a case-kit with brass
frames is $4.25 X the number of unit inches
(catalog Item #C1436). With cherry frames,
the cost is $5.45 X the number of unit inches
(catalog Item #C1435).
In the event that you wish a
completed case, please contact BlueJacket
for a prompt price quotation.
BlueJacket’s case-kits are offered to
offset the crating, shipping, and insurance
costs associated with completed cases.
They include all wood, hardware, and
assembly instructions. All wood supplied
is finish sanded, but is not finished.
Case-kit bases are routed to accept 1/8”
glass. Please note that glass is not
supplied. Typically, our case-kit customers
take the kit and instructions to a local glazier who can easily supply the appropriate
glass and assemble the case.
The cost of a case-kit is easily
determined. Add together the length
+ width + height of the desired interior case
While it is highly subjective, we normally
suggest that the size of a case should be
4” longer than the total length of the model,
3” wider than the total width, and 2” taller
than the total height (including pedestals or
cradle). The size of the case is an
aestheti c judgement and is ultimately
the decision of the model owner. That
is why BlueJacket produces cases in your
specified size. Please note that all sizes
discussed and specified are interior
dimensions, whether stated or not.
Because our cases and case-kits are
custom manufactured, payment is required
at time of order. Please allow ten weeks
for case completion. Also, please note that
special shipping/handling charges apply.
