A Lead Problem
SOLUTION
Playing Teams at unfavourable vulnerability,
you, North, hold:
You have nine top tricks and the only way to
make another three is to ruff three cards in
dummy. If you play a low diamond at trick
two (or even ace another diamond) West will
gain the lead most of the time and lead a
second trump on a typical full deal such as:

The best chance is to win the first trick in
hand with the seven of trumps and lead a
low club at trick two, hoping East has queen
of clubs and that West has at least three
clubs.
On the above layout, East takes the jack of
clubs with the queen and returns a diamond
(say). You will win the trick with the ace of
diamonds, and then cash the ace and king
of clubs, discarding dummy’s remaining
diamond. After that passes successfully, you
will make the rest of the tricks on a crossruff.

This is a real problem faced in the Seniors’
semi-finals and the outcomes are in the next
article.
Going Down
During the early rounds of the Swiss, the
most interesting hands seemed to involve
very low numbered pairs going down in
contracts, frequently doubled.
The first round pitted the highly fancied
pairing of Paul Gosney and Matthew
Thomson against the Queensland
partnership of John Kelly and Bas Bolt.
On board 1, John passed, then started
doubling early and didn’t stop.

South’s minor suit tops took the first three
tricks and a club was continued to North’s
King. John played a third round of clubs,
won with dummy’s Queen. Matthew led a
small trump off table, thought for a while and
then played a fateful 9. Bas was delighted to
score his singleton 10 and there was now no
way to avoid -800.
Board 3 saw another 9 imps go to the
Queenslanders when the pre-ordained to fail
3NT was let through at many tables but not
at this one.
After John had opened 1♦ following two
passes, Matthew quickly became declarer in
3NT.
Bas led a diamond, taken by dummy’s King.
A spade to the 10 was allowed to stand and
the next spade saw the Queen headed by
the King. John led the ♦J, Matthew took the
Ace and Bas unblocked the Queen. Four
rounds of clubs followed on which John
pitched major cards. When Matthew led a
small heart off table, John pounced on it
with the Ace and cashed his diamond tricks.
All seemed fairly routine – 24pt 3NT, double
stop in every suit and a cashing 4-4 fit –
unlucky?
GeO Tislevoll was in the same contract after
a similar auction and also on a diamond
lead. GeO ducked the first diamond and
won the second. He also played a spade to
the 10, holding the trick. Again four clubs
were cashed but this time, North,
presumably placing GeO with the spade
Ace, discarded diamonds GeO now played
a heart taken by the King when North
ducked and cashed the ♦A. He exited with a
spade and left it to the defence to decide in
which major they would concede the ninth
trick.
Back to Matthew and Paul to see a double
misfire.
Two passes saw Paul open the East cards
1♥. John overcalled 1♠ and Matthew
splintered 4♣. Bas called the spade game
and Paul doubled.
The play was brief as twelve tricks were
lined up for +790 and six more imps.
Onto match 2, which pitted Peter Gill (N)
and Paul Dalley against GeO Tislevoll (E)
and ABF Teaching Co-ordinator, Joan Butts.

Two boards later and
Tea / coffee to the table
Just call a caddy and have
the money ready
After two passes, Joan opened 1♦. Peter
overcalled 1♠ and GeO tried a pre-emptive
raise to 3♦. Paul doubled and Joan liked her
hand enough to try for 3NT. Peter didn’t like
his hand enough to defend (which is a pity
asa double and the inspired lead of the ♣K
would see Joan left with no recourse but to
cash up her 5 tricks for 4 down and -1100).
However, Peter called 4♠. Joan did like her
hand enough to defend and the red card
landed.
Twist and turn as Peter might, there were
only 7 tricks and that put 13 imps in the out
column.
Joan opened 1♦ as dealer and Peter
overcalled 1♠. GeO passed and Paul
queried the overcall via 2♦. Joan passed
and Peter rebid 2NT to show his diamond
stop. Paul liked his clubs and raised to 3NT.
GeO found a small heart lead – the first six
tricks indicated that making contracts was
still out of fashion as another 8 imps went
away.

Then Joan gave some back. If I knew who
the ABF Teaching Co-ordinator was then I’d
suggest that this hand could be used as the
model for a lesson on “not bidding your
hand twice”.
After two passes, Peter opened 1♥ and
GeO overcalled 2♣. Paul forced with 3♣ and
Joan raised the ante with 4♣. Peter called
the heart game which ran back to Joan who,
oh dear, came again with 5♣. Peter doubled
and Joan got to count the cost of repetition
to the tune of 800 against a datum of 600.
Now class, say after me, “I must NOT bid
my hand twice.”
Onto the third round where I watched Mike
Cornell and Ashley Bach taken on the
Andrews Mill and Hegedus. Everything went
pretty much with service until board 22
landed and, in the words of John Fogerty
and/or Yogi Berra, it was “dejà vu all over
again.”
Mike passed as East and Andrew H opened
1♦. Ash passed and Andrew M called 1♥.
Andrew H rebid 2NT and Andrew M showed
his second major with 3♠. Andrew H really
liked his hand now and (I assume) reached
for Keycard with 4NT. Andrew M showed his
lack of controls and disdain for the whole
affair with a pass.
Ash led the ♣J and declarer took the third
round of the suit. He tried a diamond to the
Queen but Mike took his Ace and two more
club tricks. He switched to a diamond and
Andrew H tried a heart to dummy’s Queen
but the King was waiting for her. Ash still
had a spade to come and that was a quiet
four off.
Well, that was enough carnage for me so I
thought I’d enter a more sanitary
environment by watching some of the
Seniors’ semi-finals. But guess what ..

Carnage is the gift that keeps on giving.
First out of the slots was this little gem.

Boardman and Stephen Lester. Terry
judged accurately that things could only get
worse and passed.to collect 5 imps.
Things were rather different in the Women’s
semis. One match pushed in 5♥x down 1.
The other match saw 4♥x making against
6(!)♣ (undoubled!) down 4.
Unpleasant Experience?
Let us first visit the table occupied by Simon
Hinge(W), David Beauchamp (N), Kim
Morrison (E) and George Smolanko.
George opened 3♥ and Simon doubled.
David raised to game and Kim, for some
inexplicable reason, passed, as did George.
Simon doubled and Kim felt really good
about life. After a pass from David, Kim
squeezed out 4NT and Simon chose clubs
and David chose double..
He led the ♦A, George pitching a spade,
and switched to the King of hearts, ruffed by
Simon. He cashed the spade Ace but
George ruffed the ♠K which followed. Simon
ruffed the ensuing heart and then ruffed a
spade on table, over-ruffed by George.
George exited a club and the sun set on -4
and -800 for Morrison/Hinge.
The ABF is committed to ensuring that
all players compete in a pleasant and
respectful environment. To assist in this,
we appoint recorders to facilitate the
smooth running of bridge events.
The role of our recorders is to:



receive information (either verbal
or written) from individual players
as to concerns which may arise
from events at the table
be available for consultation prior
to commencement of play (10
minutes) and at the end of play
(20 minutes); and
consider the issue/s raised and
take appropriate action.
At the Summer Festival of Bridge we
have appointed John Brockwell, Julia
Hoffman and Peter Grant as our
recorders.
However… that was just a boring push as
Bruce Neill and Arjuna De Livera inflicted
the same damage on the same contract
when it was played, after a very similar
auction, by Russel Harms and Jeff Travis.
The big winner on the board was Terry
Brown. He conceded a paltry 590 when
faced with the same situation. Avi Kanetkar

David Beauchamp faced this problem and
led a post mortem winning heart. The layout
was:
Policy on Uniforms
for Australian International
Teams
The ABF has introduced a new
policy about uniforms for teams
representing Australia applying from
2015 for the next 5 years. We are
seeking final feedback on the policy
at the Summer Festival.
Simon Hinge took his Ace and cashed five
rounds of clubs, David discarded two
spades and two diamonds while George
dispensed with a spade, a diamond and a
heart. Having run out of tricks, Simon tried a
diamond to the King and the defence
claimed for three off. Notice that a good, oldfashioned, fourth highest from your longest
and strongest – ie a spade lead sees the
defence take the first eight tricks for four off
and how much fun would it be for North to
take those spades sooooooooooo slowly
and carefully.
At the first feedback session on
Thursday 14th participants agreed
that we should replace the
Australian Coat of Arms with the
ABF logo and gave input on shirt
colour and design.
A second feedback session will be
held at lunchtime on Wednesday
21st January. If you have views on

Ah well, back to the Swiss to see if the
plasma refills have arrived yet. Table 1,
Michael Cornell and Ashley Bach have been
in residence for some time and are joined by
Mike Doecke and William Jenner-O’Shea
and first out of the slots was

♣8, Ash continued the suit to declarer’s Ace
while Michael pitched a spade from North.
Mike laid down the ♥K and Ash took his Ace.
A small spade exit saw the Queen score
and Mike continued with his heart attack by
leading the 10, taken by North’s Jack.
Michael switched back to spades, with
dummy’s bare Ace scoring. Mike persevered
with hearts, only to see Michael take the
Queen and 7 before finally giving Mike his
heart consolation prize by playing the 3 to
dummy’s 5. Mike played an obscure-looking
small diamond off table for Ash to take his
Queen and another club for 3 down.
Ah well, tomorrow’s another day. Maybe
then I’ll see someone make a contract.
Mike D opened a Precision-type diamond as
East and William responded 1♥. Mike rebid
1NT and was raised to game.
Ash led the ♣Q which was allowed to stand.
