CAPTAIN FRED ARCHER’S 2008 SUPERBAR CATALOG FEATURING OVER 400 SPECIALTY SPREADERBARS, WE OFFER BY FAR THE WORLD’S BIGGEST SELECTION. (Limited edition print available) HOME OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE BAR LURES ON EARTH! 1 SUPERBARS FAR SUPERIOR TO ORDINARY METAL BARS Talk is cheap. Here are some of the reasons why our composite bars are better than metal bars... SuperBars are so flexible that you can actually tie them in a knot and then return them to their original “fishing position”. They impart lifelike action to our bars that can’t be remotely approached by old fashioned metal ones. Add this wonderful flexibility to the fact that they will not kink or break during normal fishing conditions and handling and you already have a vastly superior spreaderbar. We guarantee that the bar will not break when fished with and will replace any broken bar for free. In over twelve years of selling SUPERBARS we have never even seen a broken bar, let alone replaced one. SUPERBARS not only don’t kink, corrode, or rust, they are incredibly tangle-free. When it comes to not tangling, no metal spreaderbar made by anyone, anywhere can remotely compare to a SUPERBAR. Unlike ordinary spreaderbars, SuperBars have almost no metal components to jam, rust, corrode, break, tangle or weigh our bars down and impede their performance. Due to their streamlined shape and lack of junky, clunky metal rigging components, they are incredibly weedless when compared to metal bars! Our bar stays out of the water because its light weight and the diameter of our bar cause it to act like an airfoil, or wing when trolled. Metal bars are too thin, yet heavy, to create an airfoil effect, so they dig in and run bad. RIGGED TO STAND UP TO HUGE FISH Our unique composite centerpiece is produced for us out of a proprietary material on our tooling. Look closely and you will see that other than passing alongside it, the leader has nothing to do with and does not stress or affect the bar at all. ¾ WILL NOT KINK, CORRODE OR RUST ¾ WILL NOT BREAK WHILE FISHING – GUARANTEED ¾ TROLLS ANYWHERE; FLAT LINES, SHORT OR LONG RIGGERS ¾ TROLLS GREAT AT VERY SLOW SPEEDS TO OVER 10 KNOTS ¾ DOES NOT TUMBLE, PLOW OR TANGLE ¾ IS BIG FISH RIGGED, WITH HEAVY MAIN LEADERS ¾ TINY MODELS CAN BE FISHED WITH VERY LIGHT LINE, ALL THE WAY UP TO 80# ¾ WILL NOT DAMAGE BOAT FINISHES OR FISHERMEN 2 NEW BARS FOR ‘08 ALL PRO TIP! SUPER FRYBARS! LITTLE BARS FOR BIG FISH Gamefish of all kinds, but especially all members of the tuna family and dolphin/dorado spend a great deal of time feeding on small-to-tiny bait – far more than most fishermen realize because they are trolling lures that are too big. The reason big fish crave little bait is simple and natural and is in fact, the same one that explains why the biggest of the whales eat nothing but - small fin and other forms of tiny bait have a much higher protein-to-body weight ratio than larger fin bait. The latter have much higher fat-to-body weight ratios and fat is not a desirable building or energy block for fish. So, when the fish have a choice, they instinctively choose the small, protein-rich fodder over the bigger stuff, which in most cases is also feeding on the tiny bait too, and for the same reason. Troll lures that are too big during these common times and you are not going to catch any fish, or catch just a few. YOU MUST MATCH THE HATCH IF YOU WANT TO CATCH FISH! BURN THIS FACT INTO YOUR MEMORY AND APPLY IT TO EVERY FISHING TRIP AND YOU WILL CATCH A HELLUVA LOT MORE FISH!! THIS TINY SIZE THING CREATES A HUGE PROBLEM FOR THE AVERAGE FISHERMAN Plain and simple, that problem is matching the many tiny hatches with lures. Most fishermen don’t even carry single lures small enough to interest fish zeroed in on tiny bait in the first place. And in fact, it is almost impossible for gamefish to even spot single tiny lures in the typical trolling spread, so even if anglers troll some tiny, single baits, the odds are that no fish will see and hit them. Gamefish don’t look for individual little baits, they look for schools or pods of them! NEW! THE ANSWER TO “THE LITTLE BAIT BLUES”, SUPER FRYBARS This is the deluxe MEATBALL SUPER FRYBAR teaser pattern. The center leader on this bar and all other FryBars is 150# test because at times, BIG FISH hit it. The color selection is on the right.. Actual size Fry Squid Hopefully, you can imagine how terrific this little bar looks when trolled and how it represents a highly visible pod of FIFTEEN tiny baits as opposed to just one to attract and catch fish. And that is exactly what happens, over and over again for sharp trollers who are ready with the only lures that will catch piles of fish on those many tiny bait days. Ready to fish all the way up to 80# gear, these little bars are also absolutely perfect for light tackle fans who want the power of spreaderbars in their corner. FRYBARS are also priceless when it comes to making bait such as mackerel, skipjacks, 3 Spaniards, sierra and small tunas. Squash down the hook barbs and use small chasebaits when making bait with FRYBARS. Fish them on heavy gear and horse that bait in. Wire leader on chasebaits for Spanish Macs and Sierra’s. 10” WIDE MEATBALL FRYBAR – 15 SQUIDS 9” WIDE LITTLE FRYBAR – 8 SQUIDS THE BIRTH OF OUR NEW SPORTBOAT AND PANGA/SKIFF BARS The SPORTBOAT AND THE PANGA/SKIFF BARS were developed by an actual California sportboat captain. As a charterboat captain who has fished SuperBars for thirteen years now, he knew how effective they are and trolls nothing but bars when he is charter fishing for school species. California sportboats after tuna, dorado and wahoo troll four or five anglers across the stern until they get hooked up and then they chum them up with live bait. We knew that the bars would be superior to single lures on sportboats too, but as a sportboat captain himself (Californian for what others call partyboats) our guy knew that the crews and customers would refuse to use any kind of spreaderbar because of their universal reputation for tangling and the fact that, even though he knew that ours did not tangle, like all spreaderbars, they LOOK like they will. And so we took everything that skipper knew about sportboat fishing and bars and came up with the perfect SuperBar for it – the SPORTBOAT BAR. The overall leader length not only produces a great running bar, it is just the right length for hooking the chasebait hook into a harness lug with the leader and squids hugging the bar, so they are out of the way when the rod is racked up. The upper leader is short for easy handling, deployment and gaffing. This special little bar runs great medium, short and long and at speeds from six to over ten knots (wire leader on chasebaits in wahoo country...and wahoo LOVE spreaderbars, bythe-way). Built way sportboat tough, you can fish the SPORTBOAT BAR on the lightest gear, right on up to 80# in complete confidence. DOUBLE DUTY TOO! Meaning that even though we call this a “SPORTBOAT BAR “, it makes a great small boat bar. We also make a smaller, 6” wide version, our PANGA/SKIFF BAR that is just as effective on little boats and dynamite for traveling fishermen, especially those who fish pangas. They are so small and compact you could fit a half dozen of them in your shaving kit! If you are Bajabound and you don’t take some PANGA/SKIFF BARS with you, you are forgetting that SuperBars were created and tested there for literally thousands of days. Not having bars on a trip to the Baja would be one big mistake, Senior! And if you are panga fishing and you don’t have them you are missing a HUGE bet! At least one top panga fleet, Fisherman’s Fleet in La Paz already uses these new bars on all of their pangas. Fleet owner, David Jones calls them “incredible fish catchers, both inshore and offshore! We tested them before putting them on the fleet boats and they blew our minds!” SuperBars are also standard equipment in three top charterboat fleets, Checkmate, Tail Chaser, and Wild Dorado. 8” WIDE SPORTBOAT BAR 7, 2 ¾” SQUIDS, 6” CHASEBAIT 6” WIDE PANGA/SKIFF BAR 7, 2 ¾” SQUIDS, 6” CHASEBAIT 4 The MAGNUM SPORTBOAT BAR Followed by an armed, 6” chasebait. This basic configuration is almost the same on the LITTLE, SPORTBOAT AND PANGA/SKIFF BARS, except the Magnums have eleven squids for a bit bigger presentation. Any size chasebait can be used, depending on what is being fished for. A killer wahoo and sierra bar, its chasebait must be on wire. You’ll find UpRiggers and SuperBars on some top Baja panga fleets, like Fisherman’s out of La Paz. Many a blown out offshore trip has been happily replaced by a day of inshore bar fishing for roosters, wahoo, sierra, skipjack, pargo, cabrillo, toro, yellowtail, amberjack, grouper and more. Trolled bars consistently fish circles around bait inshore! OTHER LITTLE BARS All three of the configurations shown above can be ordered with two bigger sized teaser squids – 3 ½” or 4 ¼” This is the actual size of the 3 ½” squids found on ITTYBITTY Bars. And this is the actual size of the 4 ¼” squids found on LITTLEBARS. See price sheet for colors and cost. This lure is 50% of its real size. The “bill” is put on with a Magic Marker to look like a ballyhoo Rig either one of those little squids up there a couple of feet in front of a bigger lure that represents a small predator on a bar or lure, just about to catch and eat it and you’ll trigger instinctive, competitive responses from fish that ignore single lures that represent a meal that they just aren’t interested in because they aren’t hungry. The Pro Squid above is a mighty good ballyhoo copy that some of our customers have had great success. It not only looks like a ‘hoo, it feels like one. 5 Here is our new SPORTBOAT BAR with six different chasebaits that make it six different lures. How’s that for versatility? BY POPULAR DEMAND, INTRODUCING GREENDEMONS, OUR VERSION OF THE GREEN MACHINE Many of our customers who have fallen in love with our XT-11 composite SuperBars have repeatedly asked us to make the above. Well, here are our versions, THE BIG GREENDEMONS and THE LITTLE GREENDEMONS. Twelve and nine inch DEMONS. Invented and manufactured by Sevenstrand Company in California and called “The Green Machine”, this type of wonderful fish catcher is only popular on the east coast of the U.S. It isn’t just popular in the east, it is immensely so. Some sharp west coasters and fishermen from other areas are beginning to discover how deadly they truly are (a major Mexican tuna tournament has been won twice bait and switch fishing with Little GREENDEMON bars, but of course, no one admits it). The twelve inch bar is the most popular back east and there are those who will tell you that size is all you need, but we absolutely don’t agree with that – there are many times when the 9 inch model will outfish the bigger one. DEMONS ON SUPERBARS VERSUS OLD FASHIONED METAL BARS – NO CONTEST! “Machine-type” lures are very light and have very little water resistance due to their streamlined shape and lack of action. This presents problems when they are rigged on ordinary metal bars that are heavy and more importantly, that cut through the air, instead of creating an airfoil effect that causes the bar to “float” over the surface of the water, like SUPERBARS do. Because of this, a metal “Green” bar can only be trolled from certain positions and at certain speeds in order to keep the bar itself out of the water. Not so with a SUPERBAR!. Put simply, GREENDEMONS run great off light, flexible SUPERBARS and you can fish them anywhere in the pattern and at a wide variety of speeds. You’ll love how they run and you’ll love our prices, too! TOURNAMENT WINNING GREENDEMON TOURNAMENT BARS Because of heavy metal spreaderbars and their negative effect on the fight of gamefish, the IGFA has banned the use of spreaderbars with the hooks attached. This was a great disappointment to us – not because it made fishing bars in tournaments more difficult, but because it might encourage other competitors to learn how we always fish tournaments, especially ones for the biggest tuna. What follows has been a deep, dark secret of ours and a handful of the best tournament tuna fishermen on the planet for five years now. In that time, the biggest tuna tournament of them all has been won twice using the method and not long ago the rules had to be changed for the tuna division of The Stars and Stripes Tournament in Cabo (100% of the proceeds go to needy children in Mexico and California - over two million 6 dollars raised for that cause over the last two years! This is a BIG one for a great cause!) after Captain Fred and his team took all three places in the Tuna Division running on one engine for three quarters of the contest! The rules were changed after this unprecedented sweep to allow for only one winner per boat, per division! This is the deadliest tuna tournament trolling technique ever invented and it is murder on marlin, too! ALL PRO TIP! ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ONLY ONE TUNA, THE BIGGEST, MEANS ANYTHING IN A TUNA TOURNAMENT CATCHING ANY OTHER TUNA IS A TERRIBLE WASTE OF TIME – A LOSER’S GAME! FISH WITH “ARMED” LURES AND YOU ARE GOING TO GET HOOKED UP WITH WORTHLESS TUNA, OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND ARE GOING TO WASTE TIME FIGHTING AND LANDING THEM. THIS IS NOT ONLY A LOSER’S GAME, IT IS A FOOL’S GAME WHEN IT COMES TO TOURNAMENT FISHING! TROLL A CERTAIN NUMBER OF HOOKLESS GREENDEMON TOURNAMENT BARS THE RIGHT WAY AND IN THE RIGHT POSITIONS AND YOU WILL NOT HOOK UP AND WASTE TIME ON “REGULAR” TUNA – NOT A ONE! ZERO WASTED TIME! DITTO FOR MARLIN, SAILS, DORADO, OR WHATEVER. DONE RIGHT, YOU WILL SEE AND WITHIN SECONDS HOOK ANY AND ALL BIG TUNA THAT SHOW IN YOUR PATTERN WITH NO MORE THAN A FLICK OF THE WRIST. SORRY...ONLY FOR GREEN DEMON TOURNAMENT BAR CUSTOMERS! TRUTH IS, THE MACHINE IS POPULAR BUT WAY OVER RATED...AND TOO MUCH MONEY, TO BOOT! Captain Fred says, “Yes, we sell Green Machines, but only because they are popular and people want us to carry them, but I think that hollow squids are great alternatives to Green Machines. I vastly prefer a green, hollow squid to Green Machines for chasebaits on spreaderbars or as single lures with birds in front of them. The squids are hard heads, like the machines, the hollow squids are soft, like the real thing so the fish hold onto them longer and will actually eat them. They even collapse in gamefish mouths like real baits do, leaving just the hook in there for great hookups, they look a lot more like a real squid or even (blue and white) ballyhoo, they come in many more and far better colors and sizes, can be as heavy or light as you want them to be, are a snap to rig, and cost a helluva lost less than the Machines. Green Machines may be popular and all, but that’s tradition, not performance speaking. No machines for me – squid only! TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT SQUIDS LOOK LIKE ON ONE OF OUR DAISYBARS Looks good, doesn’t it? Pick your chasebait size and you can buy three or four of these for the price of one, skinny, poorer performing and vastly more expensive Green Machine daisy chain with a few teasers on it. It’s a no brainer! CEDAR PLUG COLORED SQUIDS Another thing that we asked our squid supplier to make for us was cedar plug colored squids. We just had to have a squid that was the same color as those wonderful cedar plugs that we have all used for years. And they made us a great one, but no wonder – they are the original and biggest manufacturers of cedar plugs! The natural “squid look” of the cedar plug is common knowledge. Can you imagine what whole packs of them on spreaderbars do to the fish? 7 WHAT ABOUT THE ACTION? Good question! The squid-like color of a wet cedar plug is without a doubt part of the attraction of cedar plugs. But it is true, or at least we think that it is, that the action of the cedar plug is a also a big part of why it is so effective. The squids on a spreaderbar have that great color down pat, but they don’t have the same action as a straight cedar plug. However, bars have proven over and over again that the way that hollow squids swim on a them is mighty attractive to gamefish, so we consider the shift from the action of a single cedar plug to that put out by a SuperBar to be an even trade-off. And hey, if you believe that the action of a real cedar plug is important, just rig one up as a chasebait, or have us do it for you! And the effect of packs of cedar plugs in a pattern???? Don’t even go there!!! Just as you might imagine, whole schools of cedar plug imitators with either a different colored “straggler”, or a bigger chasebait (for marlin, big tunas and wahoo) that mimics a small gamefish or even a real cedar plug chasing the cedar plug teasers raise fish like no single cedar plug or even daisy chain of them ever could. As usual, wire for wahoos. This bar is a great producer when the smaller squid that are so common around the world are present and the fish are locked onto them. Some might think that tuna are the main fans of cedar plug SuperBars and they do love them dearly, but everything eats squid and you are likely to have anything, right on up to marlin and sails eat them, so rig your tackle accordingly. If there are marlin about, change the chasebait to a bigger squid and add another one to two feet to the chasebait leader. 9 or 12 inch “chasers” are great for whites & striped marlin and the 15 and 20” are blue slayers! ALL PRO TIP FOR BILLFISHERMEN! WHAT TO DO WHEN A MARLIN OR SAILFISH COMES UP ON A BAR Top Cabo charter captain and longtime bar user Captain TJ Dobson of Gata Gordo gives this advice when a marlin or sail pops up behind a bar, “Turn your back and keep driving. In Cabo it is the sails that are the hardest to hook up on a dropback bait, but if you leave them alone they will peck away at a bar until they get hooked. Same thing with striped marlin. Have faith...once they get after a bar they don’t quit until they get it!.” Captain Fred says, “TJ is absolutely right. Spreaderbars are terrific billfish catchers, the best by far as far as I’m concerned. They outperformed marlin lures so much on my charterboat that I quit trolling the lures altogether and trolled six bars and two ballyhoo or ballyhoo colored squids only. We caught literally thousands of blue, black, striped, marlin and sailfish on bars. I not only learned what great lures they are, I discovered what TJ said, that the best thing to do when a marlin or sail comes up on a bar is...NOTHING! There is nothing about a bar or it’s chasebait to spook a fish that bills it – it’s soft and feels real, so the fish stays after it until he catches it, he crushes the bait’s head to kill it, it “squishes”, just like the real deal so he won’t try to spit it, like a hard or even a softhead lure, and there’s nothing left in 8 that billfish’s mouth but a very sharp hook...Let the boat set the hook and go ahead and catch the fish. And the best part is you will not lose him unless you bust him off or drive over him! DID YOU BILLFISH HOUNDS READ THAT?! We’re talking near-100% hookup AND landing ratios on hollow squid spreaderbars, folks! That is not only utterly impossible with marlin lures, it even beats natural baits! I hope you bill fishermen are listening! And for cryin’ out loud, DON’T put a marlin lure on a bar as a chasebait – why in the world would you EVER want to go from a near 100% hookup/landing ratio back down to the far, far lower ratios produced by marlin lures?! Run them squids and wait for “the squish” – you’re gonna LOVE the results! You’ll find all of the information on this in Fred’s new marlin book. ALL PRO TIP! PUT YOUR BARS WHERE THEY WILL CATCH THE MOST FISH! They say that one picture is worth a thousand words. If that were so, no explanation would be needed with the one that follows, but what this scene, shot from a purse seiner’s spotter plane shows is too important not to include some commentary with because we don’t want anyone to miss the extremely important point that it makes. (We know the size and quantity of these tuna because not long after this shot was taken the seiner arrived and wrapped the whole school, the sad side of this great shot.) See where it’s happening? Put your lures where the action is! Here is the original photo ARE YOU SURE THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP FISHING THAT STINGER OR WHISKEY LINE?? NOT US! You catch fish on your stinger, right? So why ask this seemingly silly question? The photo clearly shows “where the action is” when a school of feeders comes in and attacks a meatball of bait. In this case the stinger lure would be way back there with the stragglers – fish that obviously aren’t feeding in the first place, so why put a bar or lure back there? Second, if you do get hooked up that fish is much further away from the boat and you are giving it a running start that none of the other fish that you have hooked up in “The Action Zone” get. And would that stinger lure get bit if it was in among the others, where the real action is happening? You’re kidding, of course! The chances are, though, that none of the fish lagging behind the school are feeders and that long lure isn’t going to get bit many times on this sort of stop. YEAH, BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE TIMES THE STINGER DOES GET BIT? Here’s what...YOU HAVE ALMOST CERTAINLY MISSED GETTING A MULTIPLE HOOKUP, THAT’S WHAT! Remember that tuna (and most other gamefish) travel in schools. If the fish are the right kind and in a feeding mood, or if you are trolling the right kind of lure back there to turn non-feeders on, the very first fish to strike is going to be one of the school leaders at the front. WHEN YOU HOOK THAT FISH, IT BEATS FEET, TAKES OFF AND THE REST OF THE SCHOOL DOES WHAT COMES NATURALLY AND FOLLOWS IT...AWAY, NOT UP TO YOUR FULL SPREAD! If you are typical (like we were), you happily fight and land or lose one fish out of the seven or eight that you don’t realize that you probably would have caught if you hadn’t been trolling that single lure way back 9 there in the back forty! Sorry to all of you stinger fans out there, but this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and if it happens on an otherwise slow day it can and probably will mean a one fish day versus six, seven, or eight or even more. HOW CAPTAIN FRED DISCOVERED THIS “I used to love fishing a stinger and still do on occasion, but I never fish it way back where I used to – except for a special situation that I will explain in a bit - because of what was discussed above. One of the advantages of a tuna tower and one of many reasons why I wouldn’t have a boat without one is the incredible view one gets from it. You can watch the lures work and if you are really watching, see just about every fish or school of them that comes to your spread and see for yourself exactly how they react and hit. It was as common as daylight on my boat to hear me or one of the crew up in the tower bellow out, “Coming! Coming!”, followed by, “Tunas!”, “Big Tunas!”, “Dorado!”, “Marlin!”, “vela (Sail)!”, or “Wah(by the time we got the “hoo!” part out there was usually a reel or reels screaming. God I love those things!) It used to drive most of our customers nuts when whoever was watching the pattern started that, “Coming! Coming!” stuff, especially when we had spotted fish way back there coming up the wake, which is where most tuna and marlin come from – behind or behind and below, with the main exception being dorado and wahoo, which can come in from anywhere. Sometimes it took the fish pretty long to get up and into the pattern and by then the two of us up in the tower would be yelling things like, “Oh yes, here they come! Tunas! Oh man, grandes!”, or “look at ‘em all!” “Get ready! Coming, coming, coming...Pow! Rrright riggah! Pow! Left riggah! Pow, pow, pow, pow! There go the flats! Hooka, hooka, hooka!” (If you don’t freak out when you get covered by a school of tuna that you have watched come in from way back there, don’t fish with us! Hell, I’m shaking just writing this!) TOWER TEACHINGS It was during my early days down in Cabo, where I fished almost every day, year-round and where yellowfin tuna are a year-round target that I saw what happened and happened a lot when we trolled a long stinger bar or lure. The first time should have been all that it should have taken, but we kept dragging the long bait for a few more days, I guess because we didn’t want to believe what we saw wasn’t a fluke before ditching the stinger we’d used and caught fish off of forever. That first time was when we had a big school of big tunas coming in on top, hell-bent up the wake. It was tide change time and the fish were racing each toward us and our lures when the lead fish attacked the stinger lure, got hooked up and we watched it take off to the right, with the rest of the school speeding off with him! I didn’t make the logical connection on that one, but what happened was so clear and easy to see that it stuck in my mind like a jagged piece of glass. Hoping that what happened with those tuna wasn’t a common thing, I quit driving for the next few days and just stood up in the tower, looking at the long lure and behind it. And damned if it didn’t happen again! And again! When the stinger shortstopped a pod of a dozen lit up striped marlin (they are school fish and multiples are common if you know what you’re doing), I yanked it and we quit fishing with the damned thing. As it has been with a few other things that I had done for years and thought were good, but it turned out weren’t, I got a sick thinking about all of the times that this had happened in the past and on a slow day that one stinger fish had cost us the kind of multiple bites that we all fish for and that as a charter captain, I counted on to catch four-to-six anglers a bunch of fish during a nine hour day. Bear in mind that the fish only see the water – not the boat or sky above. My “sky lab”. A priceless classroom! No one will ever convince me that stingers are worth a damn and that they don’t cost you a lot of fish, especially tunas and smaller billfish; I have seen it with my own two eyes, over and over again. And what follows still convinces me that 10 stingers cost you far more fish than they catch for you. There were times down in Cabo when the tuna fishing simply got too good and the multiple hookups that are the norm for us were too much for our customers and they were getting beaten up big time. The limit is five per boat, so it was a rare day when we didn’t limit on them and wound up releasing a lot of fish. We prided ourselves on the numbers of billfish and other species that we caught regularly and if we beat up our customers too badly on the tunas, they might want to call it a day and in our case, that was a bad, not a good thing. That’s when the stinger goes back out. The reason? Because it did shortstop pods of tuna from coming up the wake and into the full pattern and covering our poor customers up. We still got covered once in a while by fish that came up directly under the lures, but the stinger cut way down on the tuna multiples and let us try to finish out the day with some of the other glory species. So I still fish the stinger once in a while, but not for the same reason that other fishermen do. I know that it is traditional fishing heresy and a lot of fishermen aren’t going to agree with me, but I strongly suggest you quit missing out on multiples because of that stinger too. Either that or run it no longer than your long rigger lures. And finally, take a good look at those feeding tunas and start packing The Zone with SuperBars. Hooka, hooka, hooka! THE ENTIRE SUPERBAR LINEUP SPECS FOR FULLY RIGGED SUPERBARS 1. ALL SUPERBARS COME WITH A RIGGED CHASEBAIT. 2. ALL ITTY BITTY BARS HAVE 100# WING LEADERS AND 200# MAIN LEADERS. 3. This is the only true “all speed” squid that we know of and it is without a doubt the best hi and low speed squid ever made. In spite of their much higher cost, Pro Squids and ProBars will remain the choice of professionals who just have to have the best, speed merchants who want to cover water, and wahoo specialists, no matter what the cost. That’s just the way that those guys are. This is a ProBar. It comes in one configuration only and this is it. It comes in five proven teaser colors only. It comes in one squid size only – 8 ½”, that perfect size that is so often the choice of gamefish of all sizes. Its streamlined, ballyhoolike shape – and very much like that of the legendary Green Machine, only much lighter weight (easily weighted) - is another important factor in why it gets bit so well. And that sleek shape is why it is the best hi speed spreaderbar of them all. Fred named this one ProBar from the first day that he made it because having used it for a long time on his charterboat, he was sure that they would be THE choice of top, professional charter captains and hardcore privateers and he was right – that is who buys them. Year in and year out, the Pros are one of our best sellers...looks like there are more pros out there than many would think! It trolls at all speeds, up to and including eighteen knots when sea conditions allow. It is the most expensive squid of them all. And the best. WE DO NOT SELL THIS SQUID ANY OTHER WAY THAN RIGGED ON A SUPERBAR, DAISYBAR, SPIDER, OR RUCKUS RAISER, OR AS A CHASEBAIT. 11 PROBAR ORDER FORM MAIN LEADER – 400# COLOR STANDARD CHASEBAIT PRICE PURPLE HOT PINK $100.00 HOT PINK PURPLE $100.00 $100.00 BLUE/WHITE PURPLE DORADO PURPLE $100.00 SQUID (BROWN/ORANGE) HOT PINK $100.00 ORDER QTY ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ $TOTAL_________ ***MIGHTY MEATBALL© VERSIONS OF SUPERBARS*** Fifteen to twenty squid “Meatball” versions are available in the small bars, right up to and including the 4 ¼” Little Bars. If the fish are on little bait, and tuna so often are, a spread of just six Meatball bars can put an incredible one hundred twenty “baits” in your pattern! That probably equals the number of baits trolled by about twenty-five typical competing boats! Does this raise whole schools of fish? You’re kidding, right? That’s like having your entire bait tank and more “chumming” in your pattern! These bars are extremely labor intensive and we would love to quit making them, but we can’t, because they are among our most popular models. Here are two Mighty Meatball© versions in action. Do forty lures trolled closely together in little schools raise a lot of fish? Not a single doubt about it. And remember, those forty lures are being trolled off of TWO RODS! Fish them off of an UpRigger and you will only take up ONE ROD HOLDER AND RUN FORTY LURES! With a pair of UpRiggers you can troll an amazing EIGHTY lures from TWO rod holders! We love to fish them, but we hate to make them because of the great deal of labor involved.. The photo on the right is the ultimate tangle test – a Meatball Bar flying off of an outrigger while we are running. This is exactly how we “stow” our bars when we are anywhere near fish. I think that you’ll agree that if they were ever going to tangle it would be here and they just don’t. The big Sea Striker 15” Squid The downright monstrous Sea Striker 20” Squid Giant Tuna fishermen already know. Blue and black marlin fishermen should know, but many don’t. Shark trollers? They should know too (in fact, most mako shark trollers are constantly looking for a bait this big to attract the bigger makos and of course, giant threshers eat BIG baits). But like the marlin fishermen, most shark trollers don’t know what those giant tuna fishermen do. And neither do those who cherish a true gator of a wahoo way over a hundred pounds – like these... 200# plus on commercial, but not IGFA scales The new world record – 184#, Cabo San Lucas Just look at the heads of those two wahoo! Now, do yourself a huge favor and THINK ABOUT what you are seeing and what it is screaming out to you! We aren’t talking giant bluefin or big blue or black marlin here; we’re just talking wahoo! Now YOU tell ME that that biggest squid up there is too big a meal for these monster ‘hoo. Come on, just try! The absolute truth is, those big squids are EXACTLY what a wahoo half the size of these should logically pursue and eat. TIME TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE BIG FISH! Yes, this is probably new thinking for you, but it is the absolute truth! This is one of those things in fishing that simply escapes what the average fisherman (and that is why he is average) thinks. “Big baits for big fish” is just as important a big game fishing expert’s credo as “Match the hatch” and in fact they say the very same thing! Of course, most fishermen ignore that first one, to say nothing of the second. I’m sorry, but that is downright stupid, period! 18 ALL PRO TIP! HERE IS THE BIGGEST FAVOR YOU’LL GET IN YOUR BIG GAME FISHING LIFE! USE IT! If you want to catch huge fish – be they tuna, blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, huge dorado, monster wahoo or big makos or threshers, start trolling Monster SuperBars NOW! THE UTTERLY COMPELLING REASONS TO START TROLLING MONSTERBARS 1. They truly are “BIG” lures; most so called “Big marlin lures” simply ARE NOT! 2. The new, compact Generation II MONSTERBARS are far easier to troll than the big, old-fashioned, cumbersome metal bar configurations of the past (and they are far less expensive too) and they are much easier to troll than many single lures. They run great anywhere in your pattern. 3. Because they are soft, natural feeling and collapse in a big fish’s mouth (so that they are nearly “all hook” at hookup times), HOOK UP RATIOS ARE FAR BETTER ON MONSTERBARS THAN ON BIG, HARD OR SOFT MARLIN LURES THAT ACTUALLY PROP A MARLIN’S MOUTH OPEN AS HE IS TRYING TO CRUSH ITS “HEAD” TO KILL IT. And giant wahoo can’t hold them in their jaws and not get hooked, so when they bite, you get ‘em! 4. The pods of big baits on MONSTERBARS , or a pod of smaller squids being chased by one big monster are far more natural and thus more natural and exciting to big fish than “big” single lures. 5. If you want to change the size or color of a “big” marlin lure you have to either replace it with a new one, or you have to re-skirt the one that you are fishing with – not so with a MONSTERBAR. 6. If you want to change size or color on a MONSTERBAR, all you have to do is snap one chasebait off and snap another one on. Think about that for a bit! And start adding up the cost factor on marlin lures compared to just one bar with multiple chasebaits. There is a huge difference in versatility, performance and cost! Both of these squids feature our incomparable pro stiff rig developed by Fred. They cause devastating hook sets. FRED’S PERSONAL FAVORITE BIG BAR FOR BIG MARLIN, TUNA AND WAHOO Captain Fred is a true believer in both the “match the hatch” and “big lure/big fish” rules, but of course, only when they apply. The first rule, “match the hatch”, is a constant one and although logical and easy to understand, many fishermen have a very hard time applying it – especially the upper and lower ends of the bait size scale. We have already addressed and given you the solutions to the tiny bait situation with the best lures in the world for those times, little spreaderbars. Now, here is the answer to those times (and again, they happen much more often than most fishermen realize) when big fish are zeroing in on and hitting big bait – sometimes even the gamefish that you are catching - and you don’t even realize what is going on, or you think you have to use big live or dead baits like small tunas and skipjacks to get bit. PICTURE A VERY COMMON SCENARIO NOWADAYS – YOU HAVE BEEN HERE, by Captain Fred... You have found tuna, a lot of them. You ran a mixed size spread of bars right away, caught a fish, pumped his stomach out with the washdown hose and saw that they were eating tiny baits. You are a sharpie and put out a monochromatic spread of little bars and are cleaning house on small-to-medium school tunas and a skipjack or two. This is today’s typical mixed size school of tunas – bands of purse seine net survivors that have joined together in what used to be a rarity, a school of tunas running from small ones, to some very big guys. YOU HAVEN’T BEEN HERE... I’m along today, but I’ve been down below sleeping since before this bite started (yeah, right). I finally stumble out into the pit and see that you have done a very good job of analyzing what is going on and setting up your spread to take advantage of it. I ask you if you have seen any big fish among the feeders and you tell me yes, you have seen several really big yellowfin busting bait among the little and school fish, but you haven’t gotten one to bite yet. “Hmmm”, I say 20 and ask if you would mind if I put one of my Accurate 70’s out on a long rigger. You say, “of course not” and before you can ask me anything else, I’ve grabbed the outfit and am attaching a small spreaderbar with what I tell you is a 20” squid chasing 15” squids MONSTERBAR . I don’t say anything until I have that bar out on a long rigger. You ask me why I’m violating the Match the Hatch Rule and I tell you that I am not. Instead, I am checking to see if the Big Bait/Big Fish Rule is on too and if any of the big tunas are doing what I suspect they are; feeding on the small tunas when they come up and not the same little bait as the smaller fish. “There are almost always a few big cannibals in today’s mixed size tuna schools, but there usually aren’t many, so fishing just for them and ignoring all of these other tunas would be silly – especially if you’re a charter. But it’s worth it to put one big predator bar out, just to pick up a cow or two if they are around during the bite. Plus, we all know that blue marlin love eating yellowfin and skipjack, so the big bar will get them too, if they are around. BLAM! ZZZZZZ! Hookup! BIG tuna! You catch him. Two hundred fifty pounder. Yahoo! A little later... BLAM! ZZZZZZ! Blue marlin! You catch and release her. A nice, 400# fish. NOW, AREN’T YOU HAPPY YOU BOUGHT THAT 15/20 BAR I LIKE SO MUCH? Brutes this size and bigger are caught there in good numbers by those who either stumble across one while trolling for school tuna, marlin, dorado, or whatever, or run across one while trolling a live skipjack or tuna for big marlin. The majority of the big tuna that are caught intentionally in the Baja are caught in a relatively few places drifting live skipjack or small tuna. Many huge fish are lost on the lower end charterboats due to inadequate or poorly maintained tackle. Pick your boat carefully if you want a good shot at one of these big fish. HOT PRO TIP! THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT LIVE BAIT FISHING IS THE ONLY WAY TO CATCH BIG BAJA COWS! It just means that many Mexican fishermen and the gringos who don’t know any better than to mimic them do happen to believe that bait is the only way to catch big Mexican yellowfins and they are absolutely full of donkey dust! It’s just that drifting around or anchoring on a known tuna bank, soaking baits is the only way these guys know how to catch big tunas. As close as most of them have ever gotten to those other great ways of catching fish might be telling people that they don’t work down south. What a crock of crapola! DONT BUY INTO THE “IT’S DIFFERENT BELOW THE BORDER” BULLSHIT The best of the Mexican fishermen (and as it is anywhere, that is a long way from all of them and there are plenty of mediocre and bad ones), have exceptional natural skills in areas such as reading the water, but they generally are way behind as far as new developments in fishing gear, electronics and techniques are concerned. There are exceptions, but not a lot. There are many causes for this, not the least of which is the utter lack of any fishing magazines or other print media written in Spanish to keep the average cruiser crew up-to-date on what is new. A high percentage of them have very limited English reading skills and so fishing magazines in English couldn’t do those fishermen any good, even if they could get them. And they have few peers who somehow get exposed to new things and pass them on; instead, knowledge is passed on from father or uncle to son, and rather than promote learning new things, this simply reinforces most locals’ notions that the old ways are the best ways, which just ain’t so when it comes to many things – including fishing. ENTER THE NOTORIOUS “GRINGO MEXICAN IN DISGUISE” “Gringo Mexicans in disguise” are fishermen, usually ones who own their own boats down in Mexico, who have Mexican crew, or “learned the ropes” from locals who are sometimes sources for bad information – especially on techniques new to them. Because they for the most part are not well rounded private boat pelagic fishermen and don’t know any better, these Gringos accept the bullshit that the locals ARE experts and they wind up cloning the way the Mexicans fish and the things that they believe. By doing this, they simply become “traditional Mexican fishermen in Gringo clothing”. Sadly, because these guys “have a boat” or “live” or “fish in Mexico a lot”, they automatically achieve a certain amount of credibility with fellow U.S. fishermen over “how it’s done down there”, when what they should be getting credit for is knowing “how it has been done down there forever”, which is a whole ‘nother matter. That kind of knowledge should be a starting point, and with few exceptions, not the only way that you should be fishing down there or anywhere else! 22 FROM, “OH NO, NOT THOSE, CAPITAN!”, TO “NO TE VAYA SIN ELLOS!” I can remember my early days in Cabo when I had a devil of a time getting my crews to first, learn the in’s and out’s of spreaderbars and second, to put them out instead of their beloved marlin lures. Believe it or not, the same was true for cedar plugs, which had only become accepted a few years earlier in California. My first crew candidates were typical experienced Cabo guys who immediately set out selecting the lures that we would fish, backing off the drags on my reels, and after seeing all of my swaged connectors, preparing to cut them off and replace them with what is called “The Mexican knot”. The guys automatically thought that they had the typical “rich gringo boat owner who don’t know nothing about fishing”. I watched closely for this with new guys, showed them how I wanted things and explained why and then watched some more. I am the kind of captain who rules his boat. Even after a crew member has earned my trust, he better do it my way, or the highway and NO ONE tells me what lures I am going to run or how I am going to run them on my boat, so I wound up bouncing a few aspiring second captains and mates before finding some who decided not to “fight city hall” and put out the contraptions the crazy gringo insisted on fishing with. And a funny thing happened – when my first two steady crew saw how many fish we caught on “the contraptions” and the happy customers reacting to all of those ripper surface strikes and then saw the big tips they gave because of them, I had to make sure that they put a regulation marlin lure or two out (prototypes that I was testing, or I wouldn’t have cared) or we’d have been trolling all bars. Meanwhile, the gringos with boats who were schooled or driven by the locals continued to fish like them and got buried by us and a couple of other boats that I gave bars to. Soon I began to hear my boys saying “Calamar, no te vaya sin ellos!” when on the radio, telling their buds what we were catching so many fish on. It means, “Spreaderbars, don’t leave home without them!” WRAPPING UP THIS HOT PRO TIP The end of this section is just a reminder that big yellowfin and other large tuna the world over are regularly caught several ways, not just one. Drifting or anchoring on a known tuna spot is only one of them and a long way from the most popular or comfortable, especially in tropical climates, where high temperatures and humidity can combine to make it a mighty uncomfortable way to fish. Chunking is yet another killer technique for big tunas there. There are many who prefer the proactive, hunting side of trolling for the big guys, not just because trolling is generally a vastly more comfortable way of fishing than baking away in one spot, but because trolling catches a helluva lot of big tuna – a lot more, as far as I can see, than are caught drifting live bait. And spreaderbars account for a huge percentage of those trolled tunas, but not in the Baja, simply because so few use and/or know how to use them. My advice when you go on a big tuna hunt is to bring along a couple of 15/20 bars or 6/15 DaisyBars with you, make sure that the boat is equipped with the big rods and reels that you need for big tuna and most important of all, that you will be allowed to troll the bars part of the time and then do it. IF YOU GO TO FISH LA PAZ, BOOK WITH FISHERMAN’S FLEET...THEY HAVE AND USE BARS It is one great fleet that uses bars of all shapes and sizes regularly. David Jones, fleet owner, is one of the friendliest, most accommodating hosts in all the Baja. We give them our highest recommendation. A Cabo 340 pound big bar fish on the left. Note the big chasebait. He was eating Humbolt squid. Another near 23 350 pound fish on the right, this one caught on a small bar that matched the hatch of small squids that day. As top anglers around the world know, bars consistently catch big tunas, no matter where they swim and big bars are pure poison on the big guys. Here is what can happen when you mix at least one MONSTERBAR in your spread. Here is a very nice canyon catch of medium-to-very-nice yellowfin and three big bigeye from New Jersey. They represent only three stops that day; two on the yellowfins and one on the bigeye. Five ‘eyes were hooked up, but only three were landed. The spread was six 9” SuperBars and two MONSTERBARS. All of the bigeye and two of the yellowfin were hooked up on the MONSTERBAR. This is far from an unusual event if there are big tunas around and you are trolling the big bars. The big bars not only catch big tunas, but if there are wahoo around, they love MONSTERBARS. Be sure to rig your chasebaits on single strand wire if there are wahoo around. And don’t worry about it spooking the tunas – it won’t. (Photo courtesy of Minerva’s. Thanks, baby) SPECIAL NOTE FOR BILLFISH FANS Hopefully you have read Fred’s new “Best Marlin Lures” book and you are interested in using SuperBars to increase your marlin and sailfish catches. The facts are that most of our bars were designed with marlin, not just tuna in mind. That is because Fred has always considered SuperBars his best “everything” catchers, so unlike many so-called spreaderbar manufacturers whose bars are mostly heavy metal copies of the old, original tuna bars that Fred hated fishing with because they were so hard to pull and to keep out of the water, from tangling, and putting a great deal of stress on the tackle, the fish, and the angler and so on. This caused him to re-invent the spreaderbar and develop the SuperBars that you are finding here. Of course, as an all-around angler and charter captain who counted marlin and sailfish among the most important species that his customers wanted to catch, Captain Archer made sure that his bars, which he tested where he lived and fished nearly every day, in Cabo San Lucas, were specifically designed to catch the tuna and other pelagics that tuna bars target, but to be great billfish trolling tools too. 24 As he points out in his “Best Marlin Lures” book, Captain Fred has trolled spreaderbars for billfish far, far more than anyone else ever...if anyone was ever going to come up with excellent designs for billfish while making sure that those very same bars were great – superior, in fact - for catching all of the other pelagics and even inshore species, it just had to be him. Remember, he made them for himself first, so you know that they meet the most demanding standards of them all – his! You will find bars that have been designed for billfish marked as such in the price sheets. They happen to be the vast majority, but if you have trouble choosing, Fred considers the DaisyBars, the Spiders and the RuckusRaiser Bugs the best. Here’s someone you will remember from (or meet when you read the marlin lure book)... SMASH! CRUNCH! GOBBLE! GOTCHA! 25 FRED’S FAVORITE SPREADS IN COMPLETE SETS THE GREEN SPORTBOAT SET (GREAT ON PRIVATE BOATS AND FOR TRAVELING ANGLERS TOO!) THEN YOU’RE GONNA LOVE OUR NEW WIDE BODY ONES! WIDE BODY DAISYBARS are the result of marrying two of the hottest lures on the water, daisy chains and spreaderbars. The result is a completely new “crossbreed” lure with the best of both of its parents shining through and turning fish on. Far shorter and wider than its daisy chain “dad”, but far narrower than the standard spreaderbar, the DAISYBAR turns the typical long, skinny, unnatural line of teasers in a daisy chain into a short, fat, natural looking and far bigger target for raising and catching fish represented by its “momma”, the spreaderbar. The DAISYBAR puts more teasers in the pattern while taking up much less space and offers up a far more natural “pod” of bait instead of an unnatural string of it. The combination is devastating on all kinds of gamefish, right up to and including marlin and the DAISYBAR is far more effective and easier to troll than the old style daisy chain. They are available in four sizes that cover both inshore and offshore situations. 29 • • • • • SOME DAISYBAR ADVANTAGES... Shorten the typical daisy chain length down by 50% or more, drastically reducing the space taken up in your trolling spread and greatly reducing the tangling that happens with daisy chains, especially on turns. More teasers that take up less space in the pattern and are more visible to the fish. And you can run them anywhere in the pattern, from the flats to the ‘riggers. They are also wonderful multiple lures for light tackle fans, but are built to stand up to the big ones. Widens the forward part of the chain to create a far more realistic “meatball” look, similar to a spreaderbar, so fish can see and target it far better than the spread-out teasers on a daisy chain.. Shorter, fatter, more natural size and shape let you run a lot more DAISYBARS than you could regular daisy chains or big “regulation” bars. The least expensive way to run deadly monochromatic patterns. Eliminates handlining fish into gaffing range like has to be done with many daisy chains. Just reel ‘em up and gaff ‘em. No more hassling with and losing fish dealing with long daisy chain leaders. And the DAISYBAR bar itself can be used as a “handle” to bounce smaller fish. Much easier to stow than regular long chains or spreaderbars. 3.6 TUNA/ALBACORE/DORADO DAISYBAR 6.9 STANDARD SQUID DAISYBAR • Lightweight, so now light tackle fishermen and those who prefer spinning tackle have a bar/chain multiple lure combination that they can troll on their kind of tackle so they can begin seeing the power of multiple lure fishing for their style of fishing. Our #3.6 DAISYBAR in particular is a great size and weight for light tackle and spin fishermen, yet it’s strong enough for 80# big game trolling gear. • • Creates a fat, natural school of bait, instead of a long, skinny, unnatural string of them. . • • Four sizes, many top colors. Built with the highest quality hollow squids – Hollow squids are far lighter and so put a lot less pressure on the gear and the fish, have much better action than heavy, molded squids, they are less expensive and troll much better at higher speeds. 30 NO MORE “SLOW POKE” TROLLING ONLY. DAISYBARS troll like champs, fast OR slow, whatever you and the fish want that day and leave “Fat Squid Bars” in the dust when the fish want speed. (Especially important for wahoo.) LIKE CEDAR PLUG DAISY CHAINS? WHO DOESN’T? Well, wait until you try a cedar plug or Petrolero colored DAISYBAR! It is every bit as effective as real cedars, trolls and handles easier and costs a lot less! Try it, you’ll like it! • Makes your hottest trolling lures even hotter. Fish a DAISYBAR with our chasebaits, or your favorite daisy chain chasebait, trolling lure, or even natural baits. Increases the fish appeal of ballyhoo big time! Available without chasebaits if you are interested in running your own chasebaits instead of ours. WITH OUR CHASEBAIT OR WITHOUT IT SO YOU CAN USE YOURS DAISYBAR BAIT PODS. Want the power of that fat little Bait Pod going for you instead of that skinny string of teasers you troll now, but you’d rather troll your all-time favorite chasebait or meat instead of our squids? We understand and it’s no problem. We think our squids are the best, but we don’t force our customers to buy them. Here’s the way for you to go. Just snap that old favorite of yours or meat on the snap at the rear of the Bait Pod and start raising more fish on that old winner today! They are an incredible value, too. Check out the prices a bit later. • • Run them anywhere in your pattern. They run great from clipped down short, all the way back to the long riggers and they take up far less space in the pattern than either a conventional bar or chain. Every component has been specifically designed by us for this new trolling lure. This is the actual size of a 3.4 and 3.6 DAISYBAR TOWBAR. It’s tiny, but tough. • Pro Rigging. We take great pride in it. All of our rigging is the professional grade promised by many and delivered by few. Please feel free to compare it to anyone else’s...we want you to see the difference! 31 EVERY DETAIL OF OUR RIGGING has been developed by us to offer our customers the very best in fish-catching performance and reliability. DREDGE & DOWNRIGGER FANS...THIS IS FOR YOU A NEW ERA IN DREDGE PERFORMANCE IS HERE... SUPERBAR SPIDER DREDGES! Here is a six inch (determined by teaser size) SPIDER in bait configuration. This is a deep tuna slayer of the first order! A WHOLE NEW KIND OF DREDGE – ONE THAT ALL FISHERMEN CAN USE. MEET OUR NEW, THREE DIMENSIONAL, UNDERWATER SUPERBAR, THE SPIDER! Until now, dredges have become more and more popular as fish-attracting, but not fish-catching devices. The typical dredge is simply too heavy and bulky for catching fish. Not so with our new SPIDERS. The concept is exactly the same as our SUPERBARS – mimic a school of bait packed together and running, only underwater and make a unit that is easy to handle and fish with that barely hampers the fight of the fish. Unlike the huge, bulky, hard-to-handle traditional dredges, our SPIDERS are designed to both attract and catch fish. As it is with surface bars, “bait configurations” with a different color straggler trying to catch up to the school get mauled by fish during feeding periods. Also like spreaderbars, “predator configurations” turn on non-feeding fish and work far better than bait configurations during those all-toofrequent non-feeding periods. Fish Spiders just under the surface, or down deep off of a downrigger or planer and there will be nowhere that the fish can hide. Now, instead on one huge teaser, anglers can troll multiple dredges alone, or under their spreaderbars for tangle free, great fish-attracting spreads. UNTIL NOW, MOST DREDGES HAVE BEEN USED AS TEASERS ONLY. NOW CATCH FISH WITH THEM Again like spreaderbars, early dredges and, unlike bars, many of today’s dredges are rigged with natural baits, a costly, time-consuming, hard-to-make rig with a short lifespan that attracts fish, but that is fragile and easily damaged or destroyed, especially when attacked by school, not billfish. Plus, big “meat” dredges are a hassle in the cockpit, especially in rough conditions and they tow like trucks, ideally requiring electric reels or other powerful mechanical devices to retrieve them, plus they are very expensive. This has restricted their use to mostly big boats. Finally, as far as we know, regular dredges have been designed to represent big schools of big baits, leaving the entire, critical small and 38 medium sized bait and bait pods part of matching the hatch empty. This may not matter to the marlin hounds, but it should, of course, because like spreaderbars, SPIDERS are simply awesome marlin catchers, but it certainly should to you if you fish for the school species, like tunas, dorado and wahoo – fish that often get locked in on small-to-tiny baits. Toss in smaller inshore and bottom species (bottom species? Dredges? Oh, yeah!) too and you should wind up seeing what we did...there was a lot of room for a new, smaller, lighter, easier handling and trolling, less expensive dredge design...thus, the SPIDERS. PLASTIC SQUIDS ARE BETTER THAN MEAT IN MANY WAYS Forget the meat (and huge numbers of squids too) on dredges and replace them with smaller, more natural pods of hollow squids in various sizes and colors and you have eliminated many of the shortcomings of traditional dredges. You can still fish natural baits as chasebaits if you must have meat, of course. 1. You can skip the time and expense of rigging a bunch of natural baits. 2. Skip the freezers, coolers, curing and costly bait shipments too. Hollow squid bars are always ready to rock. 3. Hollow squids are a lot tougher than natural ballyhoo or mullet and are far easier to replace if they do get shredded 4. Hollow squids do not blow out and turn to mush...unlike that real stuff, they just keep on fishing, hour after hour and day-in and day-out. Here is a drawing of an immensely popular configuration on bars, SPIDERS, DaisyBars and Ruckus Raiser Bugs in areas where ballyhoo are important prey. The squids here are our Pro Squids, great ballyhoo shape imitators. It doesn’t take too vivid and imagination to visualize what happens when a nice pod of eleven ballyhoo comes sliding along just under the surface, deep off a downrigger or planer, with that one poor, doomed bait trying to catch up to its school, does it? And I remind you, the “ballyhoos” on THIS lightweight, easy pulling, easy handling, easy stowing dredge never blow out, never rot, never stink, never require rigging, or salt, or brines, or baking soda, they can be trolled at slow and fast speeds and they cost a mere fraction of what one of those monster dredges do. While we don’t think that the Magic Marker created bills and color dots are important, some of our customers do and we have to admit, they do look cool and we do put the bills on our own ballyhoo chasebaits. 5. Hollow squid dredges (SPIDERS) are always ready to go at the drop of a hat. When you meter deep fish and bait, just pull them out and drop them in and get to catching. 6. They stow as easy as can be, too. No refrigeration or care...just stow ‘em. 7. Hollow squids allow you to fish a myriad of deadly colors – natural baits don’t. 8. Hollow squids are very lightweight and hydrodynamic in shape – they tow like feathers, not trucks! 9. Hollow squids look and feel real. Unlike flat, paper-thin cutout teasers, they are three dimensional and look real from all angles. 10. That lightweight and easy towing open up dredge fishing for boats of all sizes, including very small ones. 11. Besides being tuna and dorado “candy” and with bigger chasebaits, good marlin catchers, hollow squid sizes in the tiny-to-small ranges open up a whole new world of deep water dredge fishing with planers and downriggers, or even just weights for smaller species that prefer and get locked onto tiny, deep bait. This includes bottom species like fluke, halibut, weakfish, specs, striped bass and many other species, including salmon. 12. The smaller sized SPIDERS are flat-out deadly on any freshwater species that eats small baits – or even big ones. If you fish freshwater lakes and impoundments, try them. Rainbow, brown and lake trout, large and smallmouth bass, freshwater stripers, walleye and big crappie were all caught during field testing. 13. See our Price List. SPIDERS are far less expensive than metal dredges. Now anyone can afford them. 39 A HUGE Spider salmon A nice albacore on a Spider & trolling sinker Bar lengths vary according to the size of the teasers and are designed to eliminate tangling while presenting the illusion of a tightly packed bait pod with a straggler trailing it. The chasebaits are rigged on our custom clips so that they can be changed easily and quickly. If you are after big tuna, marlin or wahoo, use our big bars or change the chasebait on a little one to a nine or twelve inch squid. Remember to rig chasebaits on wire (or order them that way from us) if the wahoo are in town. We murdered them while field testing the SPIDERS, so be prepared! Another Spider bite victim, a big yellowtail caught with the Sportfisherman Fleet. The Spider is above the angler’s left hand. Here is what is likely to be our hottest SPIDER, THE BABY. It’s a school of sixteen 2 ¾” silver glitter baits on the run from a little, 4 ¼” chasebait. As is, this is a killer on deep tuna, especially albacore and school yellowfin and bluefin, and is also dynamite trolled just below the surface when they are on top. Dorado are also suckers for little baits like this. As good as THE BABY SPIDER is on offshore gamefish, it is inshore where this little fellow is going to perform pure fishing magic for those clever enough to try them. We have used them inshore with phenomenal results. The teasers and chasebaits are the same size of the near-universal prey of inshore species, be they fluke, halibut, weakfish, stripers, salmon (inshore and offshore) and who knows what else? Inshore trollers, even those in very small boats and kayaks are going to have a ball with the BABIES. This SPIDER is going to attract and catch everything that eats little baits and that is a mighty 40 long list of species. Be sure to try some bigger chasebaits in the 6, 9 and 12” class when trolling BABIES inshore and see what big fish like stripers and white seabass do when they spot that little predator chasing that school of little baitfish! SPIDERS should be trolled behind trolling sinkers of various sizes and off of downriggers and planers. SQUIDS VS NATURAL BAITS – IN A LOT OF WAYS, SQUIDS ARE BETTER & THEY ARE ALWAYS THERE...SOMETIMES BAIT ISN’T Hollow squid behind a bar will even out-fish the real stuff. Why? Number one, a billfish can’t mangle or steal a hollow squid like he can a ballyhoo, mullet, Spaniard, or real squid – no way. He can beat and bite the crap out of one, but rarely can knock or rip it out of action, like he can do so easily to the real stuff. How many more fish would that add to your catch each year? Add up the times a marlin has trashed or stolen a bait on you and left and that’s how many more you would have caught. Then consider the time wasted seeing and replacing those self-destructing, blown out baits and figure out how much fishing that time sort of thing costs you. For some, it will be a lot of fish. For some it won’t be a ton of them. In any and all cases, it will be a plus in the caught fish column. THEN THERE’S THOSE RAT PACK ATTACKS...OH NO! BONE-NEE-TOW! CHOPPA, CHOPPA! And there’s more when it comes to bars out-fishing naturals. Yeah, yeah, I know; heresy as far as the ‘hoo draggers are concerned. The truth hurts, but this is it, baby, whether you like it or not. Most of us consider a good bait cooler one with dozens of rigged baits, all ready to rock. But unless it’s a remarkable day, most of those baits are going to be wasted. Besides the baits that marlin steal or stomp into meatballs is the loss of trolling time and opportunities due to the attrition caused by smaller game or trash fish hitting and mangling those beautifully rigged ballyhoos that, like blown-out ones (and need I point out that you will never blow out a hollow squid?), you have to see in the first place, then reel in and replace. Count the times that little dorado, bullet tunas, bonitos of all kinds, gars, needlefish, jacks, little macks and dink tunas have come up and chopped or bent up those beautiful marlin baits on you and the time you then lose first of all noticing what has happened, especially if the line isn’t popped out of a clip, or a drag doesn’t sound off, then cranking in and replacing mugged baits. And don’t forget about the time and expense you waste rigging up a cooler full of ballyhoo that are, if you’re lucky, are only going to catch one marlin for you. For most of us, this kind of crap takes up a lot of time and uses up a lot of baits and takes away some trolling time and worse yet, most of the time when it happens, it’s trolling time when you are in an area with lots of life – very likely marlin country and the wrong place not to have all of your lures or baits in the water and doing their thing. ROUGH, WINDY CONDITIONS MAKING SURFACE FISHING TOUGH? High winds and rough water can make trolling spreaderbars, other lures and even natural baits tough. That’s a great time to put out SPIDERS with 8 ounce trolling sinkers and keep that multiple lure spread going for you underwater, where the fish can see them through all of the surface clutter and get clear shots at them when they come for them. Sure, you can to the same with other lures and natural baits, but they don’t have the fish-raising and catching power of multiple lures going for them, like the SPIDERS. DOUBLE TOUGH, BUT BOAT AND FISHERMAN KIND AND LONG LIVED Like SUPERBARS, the SPIDERS ‘ main elements, the bars and centerpiece, are constructed entirely of XT-11 composite, which is indestructible and flexible. It will not rust or kink. The rest of the SPIDER consists of leaders, squids, plastic beads and chafing gear, with the only metal being the swages, egg sinkers, hook and clip, so rust and corrosion are never a problem and will not hurt the boat or crew. Because hookups are basically automatic, this method is also an excellent, every day way of adding the power of dredge fishing to boats with small or inexperienced crews. And once again, because they aren’t bulky and hard pulling, you can fish as many as you like in your spread, instead of just one huge dredge that should be operated by a crane operator, it is so big, bulky and pulls so hard. You can also fish some just below the surface with trolling weights and a couple deep on planers or downriggers. One of our customers who had been trying and struggling with different varieties of dredges summed up how much sense this kind of spread makes. After receiving and running his Ballyhoo Super Pro Spread he emailed, “The minute I got my Super Pro Spread and looked at it, I realized that I could load my spread up with terrific ballyhoo imitations and I’d never have to mess around with those big, heavy, clumsy dredges again. Instead, now I “bust that big dredge school up” into two schools of a dozen each, or twenty four artificial ballyhoo clones running underwater in the two short positions in my pattern, with another twenty eight in little surface pods off my short and long riggers! And better yet, each is armed with a hook, so I can catch fish on them, instead of just raising them and then trying to get them off the dredge. I’m sold! This is how this crazy looking, fish-raising, six legged bar runs almost all of the time, with the main bar and the upper ones out of the water and a surface explosion constantly following each of the two RuckusRaisers pictured here. It is very rare for the RuckusRaiser main bar to go in the water, no matter how fast or how slow you troll it and the few times it does go in, it pops right back out. It also stays out of the water for incredibly long distances behind the boat.. As you can see, these two are being trolled flat a six to eight knots with a very low line angle, yet the bars are standing tall and raising hell. All of that fish-raising racket and... NO STUPID, HEAVY BIRDS OR OTHER PARAPHENALIA ON THE BAR AND IN THE WATER! The little, light, innovative “BugBar” that you are looking at here is all that it takes to create the incredible lift and noisy splash that the ones that you see running at the top are making. Like our new GraveDigger trolling lures, modern computer and hydrodynamic technology were used to come up with this simple, light, lean and clean, yet super explosive bar. The how’s and why’s of their performance isn’t important here and are, in fact, somewhat complicated and are naturally trade secrets, too. What is important is that we have simply never seen a bar perform like this one! THEY’RE FLIPPING YOU THE BIRD! We’d hate to think what those big, old, wide, hard-pulling metal bars with the birds mounted on the bar weigh and how hard they pull and we have to ask you – why do you think some manufacturers put birds on their bars in the first place – not why the SAY they do, “to create a big ruckus”, but why they REALLY do? As sure as I’m sitting here, they do it in an effort to keep their bar on top of – not OUT of the water where a bar should run - but on top of the water. They may fool some, but not us...Birds don’t work unless they are in the water and if THEY are in the water, the BAR has to be in the water too! How natural could a bar and birds being dragged across the surface in front of a pod of squid look? AND “THE BIRD BOYS” HAVE IT ALL WRONG IN OTHER IMPORTANT WAYS, TOO Big “baits” like birds do NOT flee in front of pods of different and usually smaller baits, the teasers on a bar. That’s “little chasing big” and it simply doesn’t work that way in nature – it’s the other way around. Two different kinds of bait, birds and squids on a bar, are also unnatural as all get out. Natural bait schools are all the same size and species. 46 THE COMMOTION CAUSE BY A HYSTERICALLY FLEEING BAIT SCHOOL IS NATURAL And that’s exactly what these new RuckusRaiser Bugs bring to you and the fish – without all of the clunky, heavy, hardpulling, unnatural garbage attached. RuckusRaisers do their thing in choppy, rough and calm waters, but it is when the sea conditions are on the calm side that they call in deep fish that see, hear and feel the frantic action up top and are attracted to it. Both billfish and tuna get really freaky when they are raised by the wild, surface disturbance and pounce on the little predator that is causing it! And just like all of our other marlin-capable bars, you get to fish for marlin with lot’s of interruptions by those “by-catches” of tuna, dorado and wahoo...aw, shucks! Here’s what happens when you slow down to lower end tuna speeds...The RuckusRaiser still “stands up”, but the commotion is reduced part of the time and the teasers dart around, much like cedar plugs. That drives tuna nuts! We’re not saying that the commotion disappears as slower speeds, because it doesn’t – check the picture on the right. Those are two “Bugs” run long and flat at tuna speed off a panga down in Cabo. They are really ripping it up back there, then doing “the cedar plug thing” for a little bit, then exploding again. That’s a “Little RuckusRaiser” with 2 ½” squids on the left and a “Big” RuckusRaiser in the middle with 4 ¼” teasers. On the right are two “Big” Ruckus Raisers with six inch teasers and twelve inch chasebaits. 47 ALL RUCKUSRAISERS ARE MARLIN RIGGED & READY RUCKUSRAISER “BUG” PRICES MODEL RR-6 RR-6 RR-6 RR-6 RR-6 MAIN BAR WIDTH SIZE TEASERS 6” 3” 6” 3” 6” 3” 6” 3” 6” 3” COLOR TEASERS CHARTEUSE HOT PINK GRN/BLK STRIPE CLEAR/GLITTER BLACK/PURPLE PRICE $70 $70 $70 $70 $70 TOTAL _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ TOTAL_____ MODEL RR-8 RR-8 RR-8 RR-8 RR-8 MAIN BAR WIDTH SIZE TEASERS 8” 4 ¼” 8” 4 ¼” 8” 4 ¼” 8” 4 ¼” 8” 4 ¼” COLOR TEASERS PINK/WHITE BLUE/WHITE /PINK DORADO BLACK/PURPLE BLACK/RED PRICE $70 $70 $70 $70 $70 TOTAL _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ TOTAL_____ MODEL RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 RR-10 MAIN BAR WIDTH SIZE TEASERS 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” 10” 6” COLOR TEASERS RASTA DORADO ZUCHINNI CEDAR PLUG HOT PINK PETROLERO BLUE/WHITE GRN MACH GRN BLACK/PURPLE BLACK/RED BLACK/GREEN PRICE $75 $75 $75 $75 $75 $75 $75 $75 $75 $75 $75 TOTAL _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ TOTAL______ MODEL RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 RR-11 MAIN BAR WIDTH SIZE TEASERS 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” 11” 9” COLOR TEASERS RASTA DORADO ZUCHINNI CEDAR PLUG HOT PINK PETROLERO BLUE/WHITE GRN MACH GRN BLACK/PURPLE BLACK/RED BLACK/GREEN PRICE $85 $85 $85 $85 $85 $85 $85 $85 $85 $85 $85 TOTAL _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ TOTAL______ 48 MODEL RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 RR-16 MAIN BAR WIDTH SIZE TEASERS 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” 16” 12” COLOR TEASERS RASTA DORADO ZUCHINNI CEDAR PLUG HOT PINK PETROLERO BLUE/WHITE GRN MACH GRN BLACK/PURPLE BLACK/RED BLACK/GREEN PRICE $95 $95 $95 $95 $95 $95 $95 $95 $95 $95 $95 TOTAL _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ TOTAL______ SORRY, BUT WE DO NOT SELL “NAKED” BUG BARS AT THE PRESENT TIME Big Pacific yellowtails taken in December of 2008 on DaisyBars and RuckusRaisers aboard The Fisherman’s Fleet in La Paz, Baja California. This is Fred again with a few words about our rigging. I take great pride in the quality of the components and the true professional rigging of everything that we make, right down to the rigging of our chasebaits – an afterthought for many of the so-called “bar manufacturers” out there. Our rigging is world-class and nothing less. Quality and professionalism show in what might seem to some to be the little details involved in the construction and rigging of a bar or lure. As far as we are concerned, there is no such thing as an “unimportant detail” when it comes to rigging lures for ourselves or for you. Just take a look at the chasebait rigging on whatever bars you are buying and compare it to ours. The difference is huge, right? The truth is, there are a lot of rank amateurs out there selling bars who have little or no knowledge of the art of professional rigging (and it is an art and their lack of knowledge of it shows) in the first place and insufficient respect for their customers and the fish to rig like we do in the second. Our chasebaits are probably rigged better and with higher quality components than just about any fancy marlin lure that you are using now, no matter who rigged it or how much you paid to have it “Pro Rigged”. Our wide selection of Pro Rigged chasebaits follows. They are broken down by SuperBar type. MINIMUM ORDER IS A FULL PACK ALL PRO TIP! A huge fish turn-on, a twenty-inch hollow squid chasing a pod of little baits is just too much for a really big predator fish – no matter what kind - to stand. Whether they are feeding or not, they come down on that chasebait like The Hammer of God and you are hooked up and fighting a gorilla that you otherwise probably wouldn’t have known was even there. It is a major error to think that bars with huge squids on them are for giant tuna only. That is just as silly as thinking that the smaller bars are only good for tuna. The truth is, bars do exactly what pods of bait with stragglers lagging behind them or little predators chasing them should do – they turn on and catch everything! “BIG BAIT, BIG FISH” AND THE REAL REASON LIVE BAIT SOMETIMES BEATS LURES We’ve all heard that a million times and it is absolutely true when the big guys are feeding and focused on bigger baits. As always when it comes to matching the hatch, if the fish are on big prey and you aren’t trolling BIG artificials, you probably aren’t going to get a bite. Most fishermen don’t realize it, but this is why live or dead bait sometimes outfishes lures. It isn’t that natural baits are better than lures – it is that natural baits like small yellowfin, skipjack and big squid are much bigger than the lures most people troll and the natural baits represent the size prey the big marlin or whatever are feeding on much more so than lures that just aren’t big enough. Now think about the biggest lures that you troll. 54 Are your lures this big? We’ll bet that they aren’t and that means you are missing out on some big fish. DO YOU MATCH THE HATCH WHEN BIG BAITS ARE WHAT THEY ARE EATING? If you do, you are one in a million. A nice, fat, twenty inch long squid like that one on the left represents a size squid or baitfish that’s the kind of big meal that large sized game fish of all kinds will fall all over. Unless you are trolling huge teasers with hooks in them, I doubt that your biggest lures even come close to a big squid size-wise. Start running bars with the monster squids on them and you will be blown away by the numbers of big fish of all kinds that you will begin catching. If you would like to try what I have found to be exceptional big fish catchers the easiest way, run a couple of our bars DaisyBars with six inch squids being chased by a fifteen inch squid chasebait, or a 20 Monster Squid. If you think that big blue or black marlin won’t go insane when they see that pod of smaller squid being pursued hot and heavy by a fifteen or twenty inch predator fish the size of what they have been eating, don’t try this. But if you see the simple logic and understand the competitive instincts and prey drives of bigger game fish, do yourself a huge favor and get and run some of these bars. (If you are in wahoo country be sure to rig the chasebaits on wire. Big gator wahoo go nuts over big bars on bars!) COST? A lot less than you probably think and FAR less than the typical big squid giant tuna bar. The six inch teasers/15 inch model mentioned above only costs $66, as opposed to the traditional big squid bar. The same bar with a 20” chasebait costs less than $75. And while we are talking about cost, compare either one to the price of one of those big, rigged marlin lures with their lousy hookup ratios that cost a hundred and fifty or two hundred bucks. So why not pack a pair of these big fish catchers for about half or less than one big bar or marlin lure? Makes sense, doesn’t it? The leader material, swages, egg sinkers, snap, hook, chafing gear, rigging beads, etc. are up to the rigger to get on his own. Our smaller bars weigh 4% of what standard “light” Titanium bars do! Average weight of our smaller bars, .12 ounce! Full sized Little TowBar. THE PRESS FIT BLUE CENTER PIECE The way that this part is connected to the SuperBar is unique and practical. It isn’t just a way for the leader to run “through” (actually “by”) the bar and not interfering with the structural integrity of the bar itself; it is also an intentional design for protecting leaders from breakage if the bar is subjected to enormous stress. This can happen when one tuna is hooked up and another grabs a wing teaser and takes off in a different direction with it. If that happens the center piece is designed to slide along the bar, which reduces the stress and keeps a leader from breaking. The center piece will not slide off of the bar completely because the wing leader loops at the ends keep it from doing so. It takes great pressure to move. RE-CENTERING THE CENTER PIECE Re-centering a center piece that has slid is a simple matter, but that is not as good as it sounds. Again, it is a pressure fit which means the friction is the “glue” that holds the center piece in position. It is a very tight fit and the center piece is hard to move. If you re-center immediately after removing the bar from the water it will still be wet and it is the water on the bar that makes is quite easy to re-center the piece. It is better to allow the bar a few moments or to dry or to wipe it down with a dry cloth before re-centering it. The center piece will then be more difficult to center, but this is good because the dry bar surface creates friction and heat when you slide it and then the bar and center piece cool off when in place. The center piece material shrinks as it cools much moreso than the bar does and this results in another tight fit to keep the center piece in place. A shifted center piece is actually quite rare, but you do need to know why it happens and what to do about it if it does, which is the reason for this short piece of advice. In a very disappointing, uninformed decision the IGFA has decided that spreaderbars and dredges across-theboard don’t comply with the “fair chase” rule and have banned armed ones (those with hooks permanently attached to them) for world record fishing. This means that they are illegal in tournaments that are fished under IGFA regulations unless specifically allowed. That could come as a big surprise protest in tournaments from now on. They are legal as teasers and if they have a lure or hook that detaches from the bar when a fish is hooked. OLD FASHIONED HEAVY METAL BARS ARE A PAIN FOR FISH AND FISHERMEN This regulation came about because of the typical big, heavy, cumbersome, old fashioned metal spreaderbars, the kind that you are probably using now if you aren’t using ours. The IGFA Board was unaware of ours, which have answered any and all negatives associated with metal bars. The decision was based on old fashioned, heavy metal bars that do, in fact, impair the fight of many fish. A high ranking IGFA official uses our bars and has recommended that we submit them to the Rules Committee because he feels that they would approve them, but that is a huge hassle that we are not going to deal with. What follows is how to fish bars the IGFA legal way – with release devices connecting to separate lines in the simplest, most efficient way imaginable, plus a whole laundry list of other great features. WANT TO FISH NATURAL BAITS OFF SPREADERBARS OR SPIDERS? HERE’S HOW... Some sharpies out there know that a ballyhoo, mullet, or strip bait chasing a spreaderbar or SPIDERS is dynamite for white, striped and smaller blue and black marlin and of course, sails and other blue water gamesters. The problem with doing so comes on drop backs after short bites. Drop backs with bars or dredges attached to the bait are simply disasters. The bars and baits drop back in a jumble and often tangle. And of course the weight and pressure of a bar or SPIDER on a fish that has picked up a drop back – especially a white or sail, usually spooks them. Trolling as described here cures that. Natural bait fishermen use very light rubber bands or a light release setting if they use a clip, the first strike breaks the band or the release pops, releases the bait (or you can do it yourself by jerking on it) and the billfish has a nice, clean natural bait dropping back and the bar or SPIDER has gone away. Bingo! Meanwhile, the bar or SPIDER is still in position, attracting the rest of dolphin or tuna schools or even extra marlin. MORE REALLY GOOD NEWS IF YOU WANT TO FISH THIS WAY One of the really neat things about fishing the IGFA legal bar method is that expensive, fancy rods and reels aren’t needed for the lower outfits that tow the bars. They are going to attract, not catch fish, so you can run them off of just about any old rod and reel you have around – no need for roller guides, bent butts, powerful, expensive rods, two speed or even lever drag reels. Because our bars are so light and easy to handle, just about any conventional rod and reel will do, even quite small ones. Just spool those oldies up with some 80# line, fish a tight drag to pull the teasers out of the mouths of any fish that grab them (some will), and you are in business!
